Luckily for all of them, the doors weren't the kind to automatically close behind them, and they were able to get back inside easily.
As the gargoyles burst back through the doors of the hall, most of the delegates were trying to make their way to the doors and were suddenly met with a wall of fierce looking gargoyles.
Nayeli hopped a little to see above the crowd, and spotted the Chairman gathering his items and preparing to leave himself.
"Excuse me," she said, pushing through gaps in the crowd, "Pardon me, excuse me."
The crowd began parting for her, as confusion and a small amount of panic began settling over the startled crowd.
"Mr Chairman!" Nayeli yelled to get his attention, her arm raised and waving.
The Chairman stopped and turned to the young gargoyle with a frown. He stopped and turned his microphone. "What is going on?"
Nayeli hurried to his raised desk, "Please. You have to stop everyone from leaving. There's something wrong at the doors."
"Something wrong?" he asked, putting a hand over his microphone and leaning forward. "What do you mean, something wrong?"
"We need to contact the police," Nayeli insisted. "I can contact detectives Maza and Bluestone, but I think we may need the SWAT and bomb squad teams. There is a device attached to the front doors."
The Chairman hurriedly took his seat and leaned in to speak into his microphone once more. "Alright everyone. For safety reasons, I need everyone to remain inside the hall." He looked at the blocked traffic at the doors. "Let the gargoyles in. Close and lock the doors."
That got everyone's attention. As a government organization, meetings, with very few exceptions such as the one tonight with the gargoyles, were open to members of the public and a matter of public record. For someone to demand the doors be locked meant that there was a security threat from outside.
"Take your seats, please," The Chairman said, then to Nayeli, "contact your detectives, please."
Nayeli nodded and slipped one of the small communicators in her ear. Tapping it once to activate it, she heard the pop and wine that let her know that the channel was open and someone was already on the line listening. "Is anyone there?" Nayeli asked, aware that there were probably more than a few ears listening.
"Hey, Ellie," Lexington's voice came through. "Are you guys on your way home yet?"
"Not yet, Lex," Nayeli said. "Can you contact mo… Detective Maza and Detective Bluestone. We have a safety situation at the United Nations building that is keeping us from leaving."
"On it," Lexington said, and within moments there were more pops as more clan members came onto the channel.
"What is happening, lass?" Hudson's strong and calming brogue came through.
Nayeli turned to the Chairman to include him in the conversation. "We were about to leave," she admitted, "but I heard a noise and stopped. Brooklyn found a black box with a flashing light chained to the door leading out."
"A bomb?" the Chairman whispered.
Nayeli sent him a worried look. "I don't know," she admitted. "Not for sure, but it wasn't there when we came in."
"Nayeli?" Elisa's voice came on the line, and Nayeli felt better just hearing the sound.
"Hi, mom," Nayeli said softly. "We're fine, I promise."
"I knew Matt or I should have gone with you," she ground out.
"Mom, you couldn't have, remember?" Nayeli was weighing her words carefully. Of course Elisa couldn't have come along. As Elisa herself had pointed out, having Nayeli and Elisa in the same room was asking for trouble, since they looked so much alike. It was getting harder and harder for them to hide the resemblance.
Someday, when the world was ready for it, Nayeli would proudly and publicaly acknowledge her parentage.
For now, though…
"I know," Elisa all but snarled. "I know what I said, but I should have come anyway."
"Time for that later," Eagle's clipped voice came over the line. "Nayeli, my team and I are on the way. Can you go out and tell me what you see on the doors?"
"No," Nayeli said as the solid thumps of those huge double doors shutting hit her ears. "I can tell you what I saw, but they've closed the doors and asked everyone to stay inside."
"I think the U.N. will understand if the gargoyles leave the chambers," Eagle said reasonably. "Is Goliath or Brooklyn on the line with us?"
"Yeah, Eagle," Brooklyn's voice came through.
"Yes," Goliath's deep baritone said.
"Good," Eagle said. "Nayeli, sweetie, you stay there and work your calming magic on everyone. Make sure that the humans stay inside and safe. Goliath, I know it's asking a lot, but I need you or Brooklyn to get close to the doors and tell me what the device looks like."
"I will go," Goliath said firmly. "Brooklyn, you stay here and help Nayeli."
