"That bed is calling my name..." Jade sighs as she enters her and Andrew's bedroom for the first time post-hospital stay

"So go ahead and lay down." Andrew chuckles as he sets Harper's carseat on the floor "I think you deserve it."

"We can't just leave her in the car seat all day." Jade reminds him

This conversation would be going differently if Harper had been a boy, and Jade knows that. If she had been a boy, Andrew would be practically forcing her to nap, claiming that he had everything under control and that the baby would be just fine with him for an hour or so while she rested. He would make some comment about him being his 'little man' or 'guy-to-guy bonding time' or something like that. In reality though, Andrew hasn't even held his daughter in his arms yet. The closest he came was carrying her carseat out of the hospital and from the car into their building, and he most likely only did even that much because a nurse stressed that Jade shouldn't.

"I get it." Andrew raises his hands in mock-surrender "I realize I haven't held her yet, and I'm sorry. It's just-"

"You're pissed that she's a girl?" Jade raises an eyebrow at him, crossing her arms across her body

She hadn't wanted to start anything at the hospital. At the end of the day they're a celebrity couple, and while the hospital staff was nothing but helpful to them during their stay...they never know who could turn around and talk to the paparazzi as soon as they leave. If the wrong outlet got ahold of even the slightest hint of a disagreement between them over anything related to the baby, it would be all over the tabloids within hours. Everything is on the internet these days, and the internet is forever. Jade doesn't want Harper to grow up and read anything hurtful about herself if it can be avoided.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Andrew scoffs "When have I ever said-"

"Andrew, you were so excited about being a dad up until the moment you realized she was a girl." Jade points out "You've done a complete one-eighty in the past three days. You haven't held your daughter, you didn't want to help name her, and you didn't even stay overnight at the hospital with us! You have a healthy child, shouldn't that be the most important thing? Not the gender?"

Harper begins to whimper from her carseat, almost like she can sense the tension between her parents. Jade feels a slight pang of guilt, knowing that she had been the one to raise her voice and the change in volume had most likely been what disrupted her daughter's sleep.

"I'm sorry, Harper..." Jade sighs, carefully removing the newborn from her carseat and cradling her in her arms "Shh...you're okay. I'm sorry."

"You're right..." Andrew says quietly as he walks over to them "I had myself convinced she was going to be a boy, so when the doctor confirmed otherwise I was really shocked. But that's on me, I'm the one who suggested that we wait and find out the gender in the moment. I see why it looks that way but her being a girl has nothing to do with why I haven't held her...I'm just a bit freaked out by this whole 'dad' thing is all. It's one thing to know you're having a baby, it's a completely different experience once the kid is actually here. I love her, I promise. I love you..."

He wraps an arm around Jade's waist and pulls her into him, pressing a kiss to the top of her head before looking down at the baby she's holding.

"Can I hold her...?"

"Of course you can..." Jade sighs "I'm sorry for-"

"Don't be sorry." Andrew shakes his head "I haven't been a good dad, or a good fiancé, these past few days. I'm going to do better from here on out, I promise."

He sits down on the edge of their bed and Jade gently passes the baby to him. He's both surprised and not surprised at all by how she already seems to be a natural with their daughter, showing him where to place his hands to best support her neck and body like she's been doing it for years.

"Hey Harper..." He smiles, rocking her gently "Look at you...Harper is a great name, by the way."

"Thanks." Jade smirks, resting her head on his shoulder "She's a great baby."

"Because she has a great mom."

She could stroke his ego here and add that the baby also has a great dad, but he has a bit of redeeming to do before she's willing to go there.

"So, there's something I've been thinking about for the past few months..." Andrew says, looking from Harper over to Jade "You might not be ready to have this conversation yet because I know she's only a few days old but-"

"What is it?" Jade sighs

"There's eight years between you and your brother." Andrew reminds her "I'm the oldest of four and my closest brother in age to me is ten years younger-"

"That's because we were both born before our parents were ready to be having kids." Jade points out

Which is true. Much like Jade, Andrew had been unplanned and born to very young parents. The difference between them, however, is that Andrew's parents stayed together and continued having kids when they were ready. Jade's parent's split up when she was two and both married other people. Her father never had more kids, but she has a half-brother from her mom that is eight years younger, as Andrew pointed out.

"Right, yeah." Andrew nods "I'm just trying to point out the age gaps. My younger brothers have a much closer relationship with each other than they do with me, and I don't want that for her. I want her to grow up with siblings, because I've seen how much those relationships can benefit someone's childhood."

"So you're telling me you want more kids..." Jade laughs "Even though you just gave me that whole speech about being freaked out by parenthood?"

"I care more about what's best for her than I care about what's best for me." Andrew admits "I think we should have at least one more, and I think we should aim for the next year or two. That way they're close enough in age to grow up together...they'll have a much better bond than we ever had with our siblings."

There's some truth to what Andrew is telling her, he does envy the close relationship his three younger brothers have with each other. He hadn't bonded with them in quite the same way because he was so much older. However, he also really wants to try for a boy...he would never admit that to Jade though.

"I hear you." Jade nods "But I just pushed that one out of me. I'm not saying no, I'm saying ask me again in a few months."

"I can deal with that." Andrew smiles, pressing a kiss to her temple "Go ahead and get some sleep, Jade. I'll wake you if she needs to eat."
