Harper Caterina Powell very quickly proves herself to undeniably be a complete and total mama's girl right from the start. The bond between Jade and her daughter is stronger than Jade herself ever imagined it could be. Never in her life did she think she would be able to love someone or something as much as she loves her baby girl.
Although, it's not as if she has very much competition for Harper's affection. Despite his promise to be a more involved parent, Andrew begins distancing himself from the baby again about the time Jade is set to return to work after her maternity leave. It's like he's lost interest in her almost, like fatherhood isn't quite what he had expected it to be. Harper isn't old enough to understand, but Jade is incredibly disappointed.
He's immature, she's always known that to be true. It was one of the main reasons she had contemplated breaking up with him before she knew she was pregnant. The only reason she really stayed with him then was because she was pregnant...she wanted Harper to have a chance at the intact family-unit she herself had been denied when her parents broke up. Now she doesn't see the point, not if Andrew isn't going to act like a father to his daughter. The anxiety of being a single mother to such a young child starts to plague her, but before she even has the chance to give Andrew an ultimatum...she sees a change in him.
Around the time Harper is five months old, Andrew suddenly becomes Super Dad. He stays home with her on days Jade has to go into work so she doesn't have to bring her along or call one of her parents to babysit. He volunteers to do bath time and sings her lullabies before she goes to sleep. It's a much welcome change, and makes Jade wonder if his distance hadn't been result of immaturity, but maybe insecurity. Maybe it was just a rough patch, and he was doubting his parenting abilities but was now starting to feel more confident. She knows he had panicked a bit when their daughter was born, unsure if he was up for the task of being a father, but now had clearly found his stride.
When Harper is eight months old, Jade discovers she is pregnant again. This time, however, the pregnancy had been planned, a result of Andrew's not wanting Harper to grow up feeling distant from her siblings like he and Jade had. They discuss the various things they want to do differently this time around, the biggest being finding out the gender ahead of time. Andrew is thrilled to learn that they're expecting a baby boy, and Andrew John Powell III is born just a few months later...just sixteen months younger than his older sister.
Andrew John III, affectionately nicknamed Drew by his parents, is undeniably a complete and total daddy's boy. His father, however, is immediately more interested in him than his older sister from the second he is born. He wants to be the first to hold him, he is the first to rush to his aid when he cries, and can't seem to take his eyes off of him.
Jade doesn't want to jump to conclusions, she knows how excited Andrew had been about the possibility of having a son when she found out she was pregnant the first time. She constantly reminds herself that he still loves Harper, that he's just in the honeymoon period of having a new baby. She can't judge him either, she's excited as well. New babies are exciting, although she does feel a bit overwhelmed about having two of them under the age of two. She isn't alone though, she has Andrew. And it brings her comfort to know that her children will have the kind of sibling relationship she had always longed for as a child.
"Are you going to be your Daddy's special helper today?" Jade asks Harper as she pulls a shirt over her head "Are you going to be on your best behavior and keep an eye on your brother?"
Before she had any children, Jade would go into her office on the studio lot every day to write. However, after Harper was born, she enjoyed the flexibility of being able to work from home. She could bring her in with her in a baby sling every once and a while too, but now with a new baby and an energetic toddler, bringing her children to the office with her is next to impossible. If she needs to go in, like she does today, she'll normally call one of her parents to see if they can watch the kids, but today Andrew is home so there is no need.
"Daddy!" Harper giggles, clapping her hands together
"Yes, you get to stay with Daddy." Jade lifts her daughter off of her changing table and sets her on the floor "Can you walk with me to go find him?"
Harper had started walking right around the time she turned a year old, which was both a blessing and a curse for her mother. Jade was pregnant with Drew at the time, so she at least didn't have to worry about having to carry the little girl everywhere...but she also found herself chasing the toddler to keep her from getting into everything.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy..." Harper singsongs as she toddles along, holding her mother's hand as they walk through the condo
Jade can't help but smile at her daughter's innocence. She's a very happy child and was relatively unbothered by her brother's arrival, despite her parents' attention now being split between two children.
"Alright." Jade chuckles as she finds Andrew on the couch "Little Lady is all ready for the day."
"Hm?" Andrew hums, not looking away from the TV
He has Drew nestled in the crook of his arm as he holds a video game controller with both hands. Jade recognizes the video game on the screen as Mortal Kombat, and can't stop herself from rolling her eyes. Aside from making music, she thinks he might spend more time playing that game than anything else. It's fine to have hobbies, she just wishes he would keep the violent content away from the kids...and that's her saying that.
"I'm going to work?" Jade reminds him "You have both kids."
"Woah!" Andrew pauses the game and yanks his headset off "I'm supposed to be in the studio in an hour!"
"Since when?"
"Since last night when I agreed to meet Dustin and mess around with a few things."
"Andrew, this meeting has been on my calendar since before the baby was born." Jade reminds him "Remember? I'm trying to get a pilot green-lit?"
"Can't you take them with you?" Andrew asks "Or at least Harper?"
"No..." Jade tries her best to stay calm "This isn't a conference call with co-writers, this is an in-person meeting with studio executives and network representatives."
She's a bit annoyed not only that he's arguing with her, but that he had forgotten about the meeting itself. This new series is the first solo project she's ever worked on. She has a few junior writers underneath her to assist where needed, and she consults friends when she needs to, but her name is the only one on the script until the pilot is green-lit. It's no small feat, something she's quite proud of, as her fiancé she would hope that he would be proud enough of her to remember the details.
"Jade, I-"
"Can't you take them with you?" She counters "You know how much Harper likes to sit on your lap and listen to music and Drew will just sleep."
"Yeah, okay." Andrew sighs "I'll take 'em with me."
"Thank you." Jade breathes a sigh of relief "Alright Harper Bug, gimme hugs before I go."
"Bye!" Harper exclaims, hugging Jade tightly when she kneels down beside her "Kiss!"
"Kisses!" Jade chuckles, kissing her daughter on the cheek "Okay, go with Daddy."
"Daddy!"
"Hey kiddo..." Andrew smirks as he helps his daughter climb onto the couch
"Bye Drew..." Jade leans down and kisses the three month-old's head before turning to kiss Andrew goodbye as well "Bye."
"Bye." He readjusts the baby in his arms "Good luck with your meeting."
