Cloverfield Isle is not Jade's intellectual property. She had been the one to adapt it from a novel into a television series, but the original concept for the story came from the author, Mina Scott. Mina has helped her some with the adaptation, and helped with the casting process, but trusts Jade enough to give her control of the scripts. There's nothing Jade wants more than to honor that trust.
The book series is still incredibly popular, and it's popularity continues to grow now after the announcement of the television show. Jade knows that the fans are going to have high expectations for the screen adaptation, and she wants to do right by them. She wants to do right by Mina, right by her actors...and right by herself. She doesn't want to rush anything, which is why she has continued to work on scripts for the following episodes, even though she doesn't have a confirmation on whether the pilot has been picked up or not. Once that is confirmed, if it is confirmed, the studio will want to get production going on the rest of the series as quickly as possible. She'll need scripts at the ready, well written scripts that have had thought put into them.
"You're working late."
Jade looks up from her desk to see Rick, one of her favorite studio executives, standing in her doorway. He had been involved with the last show she worked on as well, and she's always found him to be...reasonable. Rick had helped her get a meeting with Mina Scott to start discussing the Cloverfield Isle adaptation in the first place...she considers him a friend.
"S'only six." She remarks, glancing down at the clock on her computer desktop
"Everyone else blew out of here hours ago."
"Since when do we work a regular nine to five schedule anyway?" Jade chuckles "Besides, you're still here."
"I am." He nods, stepping further into her office "But I was in a meeting."
"What do you want, Rick?" Jade smirks, looking back down at her screen to type another sentence
"You're going to series."
"What?"
She looks up from her computer screen to see if there's any hint of bedevilment in his face, but there isn't. He looks dead serious...he might just be telling the truth.
"You're going to series." Rick repeats "That's what my meeting was about. We had three streaming services in a bidding war for it, but Netflix won. They ordered a season of twelve episodes."
"Don't fuck with me, Rick."
"I'm not fucking with you." Rick assures her with a smile "Congratulations, kiddo."
"Thank you." She grins
She isn't sure of what else to say, she feels speechless. It all makes sense. The books are popular and the rumors of a screen adaptation are creating even more buzz. She just hadn't expected a series order to come so soon. It can take months, sometimes even up to a year, for a pilot to get picked up for a full episode...they had only wrapped production on the first episode two weeks ago.
Rick opens his arms for a hug and Jade stands up to embrace him, still in disbelief that something she had a hand in creating was headed to the screen. The last show she worked on had already been in production for a year when she was brought on, this is the first project she's going to see from beginning to, hopefully, end.
"PR is working on a press release, it'll go out in the morning." Rick informs her "Call your cast, then go home to your family. You have a lot to celebrate tonight."
Beck and Bianca are sitting on their patio, sharing a bottle of wine when his phone rings.
He doesn't recognize the number, but knows that a 213 area code means that it's someone from Los Angeles. They were having a decent conversation so for a moment he considers letting it go to voicemail, but ends up deciding to answer on the last ring.
"Hello?"
"Beck?" The voice on the other end greets him "It's Jade West."
She could have just simply said 'it's Jade' and not included her last name, he would have known exactly who he was talking to. The two of them are still in the stage of having a more professional relationship than a friendly one though, so Beck isn't surprised that she chose to identify herself that way.
"Oh hi." He says "This...isn't the number I have for you in my phone."
Jade had changed her number in college and Beck had deleted her contact just before marrying Bianca...then changed his number about a year later, so they had needed to swap information again when they started working on the pilot. Even if they hadn't had the history that they do, Jade still would have given her number to him. She gave it to the whole regular cast. She wanted to be accessible to them if they had any questions or concerns or needed to get ahold of her for some reason. It's something many of them, Beck included, appreciated about her immediately as a showrunner.
"I know. I'm calling you from my office number." She informs him "I just talked to the executive office, we've been picked up. Netflix bought the pilot and ordered a season of twelve episodes."
"Really?" Beck looks over to Bianca with a grin on his face "Already?"
"It was a short turnaround, I know." Jade chuckles "But the books are beloved and there was a lot of buzz around the possibility of the adaptation. I don't have all of the details about when we are going to start yet, but scripts for episodes two and three will be headed your way soon and PR will be contacting you about what you can and can't say on social media yet."
"Okay." Beck smiles "I'm really excited about this."
"So am I." Jade admits "I have a good feeling about it."
"Me too."
"Well..." There's a pause on Jade's end of the phone "I thought you would want to know the good news, I'm calling the whole main cast. So...go and celebrate and enjoy the rest of your night. "
"You too." He tells her "Thanks, Jade."
"Sure."
The line goes dead and Beck slides his phone back into his pocket, looking over to his wife.
"Jade as in Jade West?" She raises an eyebrow at him and he nods "What did she want?"
"Calling me to let me know that Netflix bought our pilot and ordered a full twelve-episode season."
"Are you for real?"
"I am."
"Beck!" Bianca gasps as they both get to their feet, leaping into her husband's arms "Holy shit! Congratulations!"
"Thank you, baby." He laughs, hugging her tightly "I couldn't have done it without you."
"Oh sure you could have." Bianca insists "Fuck, I'm proud of you."
"Don't be too proud yet." Beck chuckles "We still have eleven episodes to get through."
"Whatever you did in the first one though made them want more." Bianca reminds him, cupping his face in her hands "You're going to be a Netflix star!"
"I sure hope so."
"You will be, I can feel it." She tells him before pressing a kiss to his lips "And I can't wait to watch it happen. After all of your hard work, you deserve it."
