Jade makes a lot of people happy that night when she calls to tell them the news. Now that all of the phone calls have been made though, she can't wait to go home and celebrate with her family.
Despite the issues they've been having in their relationship, Andrew is still her fiancé. They are partners, and she's excited to tell him the news. Even though she had very much anticipated this outcome, it's still so exciting to have the confirmation. Jade can picture it now...she'll tell Andrew and they'll be excited together, then they'll try their very best to put it into terms that Harper will understand. Despite their efforts, she won't know what they're trying to tell her...but will get excited anyway because she's the sweetest toddler on the planet. Maybe Jade and Andrew will finally have sex for the first time in ages. Maybe their relationship will start to improve.
The door is locked when Jade arrives home, which she finds a bit odd because with it now close to eight o'clock...someone should be home. Regardless, she pulls her keys out of her purse and unlocks the door, barely able to contain her excitement as she enters the penthouse.
"Mama!" Harper exclaims when she sees her
The toddler stands up from her place on the rug and runs towards her mother as quickly as her small legs will allow her to.
"Hi baby girl!" Jade grins, scooping her daughter up in her arms and pressing a kiss to her cheek "I missed you today."
"I missed wu." Harper agrees, then snuggles into Jade's shoulder
Glancing around the living room, Jade is surprised that she doesn't see Andrew. She wouldn't be surprised if he was still at the studio, it wasn't unlike him to pull a late night and not let her know...but if he isn't home then Sydney should be. Drew is fast asleep in his baby swing by the window, and the two children appear to be unattended. The television is tuned into one of Harper's children's channel and it looks as if she had been playing with toys on the rug...but there are no adults around.
"Is Sydney here?" Jade asks Harper, shifting her from one hip to another
Harper doesn't respond verbally, but points down the hallway towards the bedrooms and guest bathroom. A weird sensation suddenly fills Jade's stomach, almost like it's sinking and twisting at the same time.
Sydney is in the bathroom, she convinces herself. She'll be back out in a minute or two and Jade will send her home for the evening. She sets Harper down to play with her toys and sits down on the couch.
A minute passes.
And then two.
Sydney never appears.
Jade decides to go check, just to be safe. At this point if she hadn't come home, her kids would have been unattended for at least five minutes...so she convinces herself checking is justified.
Her heart sinks when she sees the door to the bathroom open and the light off, signaling that no one is inside. Jade is angry, confused, and worried all at once. Where the hell is her nanny? Why had her children been left unattended? They're too young to be left alone.
Then she hears voices coming from down the hall...she can't make out the conversation...or if it's even a conversation at all...but she knows that she definitely isn't alone in the apartment. Jade follows the noise to the master bedroom...to her bedroom. Her heart sinks, already knowing what is waiting for her on the other side of the door...but she opens it anyway.
There's an audible gasp as she forces the door open and flips on the lights. Andrew pushes Sydney off of him and she grabs a blanket to cover herself, but there's no denying that they had been having sex. For the second time in the span of just a few hours...Jade is speechless.
"Jade!" Andrew looks surprised "I can-"
"Don't." She shakes her head "Just...fucking don't."
She could yell, she could scream, she could cry...but instead she just turns and walks back to the living room. Drew may be asleep but Harper is definitely awake and alert. Any dramatic reactions could frighten the toddler and if there's one thing Jade could at least be sure she does better than her own parents...it's that she'll never let her children witness an argument that could frighten them.
"You haven't touched me since before the baby was born..." Jade is careful not to let her voice catch at all "But you were fucking the nanny?"
After walking in on Andrew and Sydney, Jade had immediately put Drew and Harper to bed. It was about their bedtime anyway, and she didn't want them to witness anything that could potentially scar them. She tried her best to remain calm for their sake, but couldn't help but let a few tears fall as she sang Harper to sleep. She made sure to collect herself before she left the toddler's bedroom, and Andrew was waiting for her back in their own.
The sheets are still a mess, the air is heavy and smells like sex...it's uncomfortable for Jade, but it's the only place they can talk with out potentially waking either one of their children.
"S'not like that, Jade..." Andrew sighs
"Tell me what it's like then."
"I didn't want this to happen."
"Didn't want what to happen exactly?" Jade asks him "You didn't want to cheat? Or you didn't want to get caught?"
"Can you stop belittling me for two fucking seconds?" Andrew snaps "I'm not a child!"
"Well you sure do act like one sometimes!"
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"We have two children, Andrew." Jade reminds him "You can't just pick and choose when you want to be a parent."
"Jade, come o-"
"No, I've been letting it slide for too fucking long and now I'm calling you out." She tells him "Pouting because you had a daughter instead of a son? Whining because you had to watch both of them at the same time for a few hours? Getting a random kid to babysit Harper so that you could take Drew to the studio with you? Leaving two children under the age of two unattended so you could fuck their nanny? Do you want me to keep going?"
"Just say what you're really thinking!" Andrew exclaims "You think I'm a bad father!"
"I think you're a great father...to Drew." Jade shrugs "Harper, on the other hand...is lucky she has two parents. Because you barely acknowledge her existence."
"So now you're a better parent than me?"
Yes. She thinks to herself, but she would never admit that out loud to him...it will only start a bigger fight.
"I'm not going there."
"Smart move."
"Was tonight the first time you had sex with Sydney?"
"No."
She had wanted to know the truth, but somehow having it hurts Jade even more.
"When did it start..."
"The week that we hired her." Andrew admits "Don't look at me like that, you're the one who asked!"
"What was your plan there?" Jade asks him "Were you just hoping I never found out...?"
"I don't know..."
"People who are happy in their relationships don't cheat, Andrew." She says flatly
"You're right!" Andrew raises his voice "I'm not happy! And you're clearly not happy being with someone as immature as me so why don't-"
"Don't raise your voice at me!"
"You started this argument!"
"You cheated on me!" Jade reminds him "You know what...I think we're done here."
"Oh no we're not."
"No." Jade disagrees "We are. I want you to leave."
"I'm not fucking leaving." Andrew insists "This is my condo. I was living here long before I ever met you."
As much as Jade hates to admit it, he has a point. The penthouse belonged to him long before she came into the picture, his name is on the paperwork. Not that she really minds, it's always felt like his place and never theirs.
"Alright fine, you're right." Jade nods "I'll sleep on the couch tonight, and in the morning I'll leave. But the kids are coming with me."
"Fine." Andrew shrugs "Are you finished?"
"I guess."
"Get out then." He spits "And take your fucking attitude with you."
