When the show isn't filming, Jade's only job really is to work on the scripts for the upcoming season. She gets more work done in her office than she ever would working at home with two young children so she still goes into work, opting for shorter hours so she can spend more quality time with her kids than she would have the chance to when she show is filming.
The morning after her phone call with Beck, she seems relatively at peace. They had only agreed to become an official couple the night prior to their argument, so there isn't really much of a relationship to grieve. Sure, she'll miss the sex, but Beck isn't the only man out there with a penis.
There's a knock at the door to her office, causing her to look up. She isn't surprised to see Beck standing in her doorway with a bouquet of flowers in one hand, his other shoved into his pocket. It takes everything in her not to smile at the sight, but then she remembers she's supposed to be mad at him.
"Mind if I come in?" He asks
"I suppose not."
Beck steps inside the office and closes the door tightly behind him, but doesn't lock it. Cautiously, he sits down on the couch, the couch where they had made out and had sex only a week prior, and Jade comes over to side beside him.
"Those for me?" She raises an eyebrow at him
"Yeah..." He offers the flowers to her "I'm sorry for being a dick, and I know that flowers won't fix it. There's no excuse for how I behaved. I mean, Andre and Tori have kids, I get that sometimes you need to drop everything and be there for them. I just didn't expect it to happen the first time we made real plans with each other."
"She really did need me last night." Jade tells him as she takes the flowers
"I know." Beck nods "I trust you, and I know that you would never use your kids as an excuse to get out of something. You're too outspoken to do anything like that. I know Harper needed you, and I really admire that you put her first. It shows how much you love her."
"My kids are the most important part of my life, Beck. If we're going to do this...I need you to understand that."
"I do. I do understand that." Beck assures her "And I promise never to behave like that or make any comments like that ever again. I think this really has the chance to be something good...can we just forget that last night ever happened?"
"Alright..." Jade sighs with a smile "But just this once. Do you understand me?"
"Of course." Beck nods, leaning in to kiss her
The kiss, while passionate, is brief. This is not the time or place to get carried away, and they both recognize that.
"I'm surprised you remembered that these are my favorites." Jade admits, carrying the bouquet of flowers over to her desk
She has always loved stargazer lilies, specifically purple ones. Andrew got them for her only once, and then spent the rest of the evening complaining about how hard they had been to track down.
"How could I forget?" Beck chuckles "It took me forever to find a place that sold them. S'the same place I went this morning to get those?"
"Really?"
"Trudy's on Melrose Avenue, yeah." Beck smiles "Same lady working there too, she claimed to remember me. I dunno if she was telling the truth or just being polite, but she's sweet."
"I can't imagine how many guys come in looking for purple stargazers." Jade shrugs "Let alone guys as attractive as you are."
"Oh stop it." Beck waves her off playfully
"Beck, listen..." Jade says seriously "If we're going to be together, there are some things I should tell you about Andrew."
"Your ex? AJ?"
"Yeah." Jade nods "Harper and Drew's dad."
"Alright." He pats the place beside him on the couch "Tell away."
"Have you ever heard of the term 'Gender Disappointment'?" Jade asks, sitting down beside him again
"Not technically, no." Beck admits as he wraps an arm around her shoulders "But I could probably figure it out with the right context clues."
"It's something that can sometimes happen to parents when their child is born and it turns out to be the opposite gender they had been hoping for."
"I figured it was something along those lines."
"Andrew has one of the worst cases of it I've ever seen." She explains "When I was pregnant with Harper, we chose not to find out her gender until she was born. Which...looking back on it...was a mistake. But he was convinced she was a boy, he wouldn't even entertain the idea of a girl. So when she was born, it was a big shock to everyone."
Beck nods slowly to show that he's listening, but doesn't say anything.
"He didn't hold her until she was three days old and we had already come home from the hospital." Jade continues "He didn't spend a single night at the hospital when I was there with her, and he wanted no part in naming her-"
"That makes sense." Beck smirks
"How do you mean?"
"Her middle name is Caterina." Beck shrugs "That idea has got 'you' written all over it."
"Anyway..." Jade smiles a bit, then turns serious again "He had very little interest in her for the first five months or so of her life. I was ready to give him the 'get it together or I'm out of here' ultimatum, and then all of a sudden he was Super Dad and was just amazing. Turns out he was trying to look good so I would agree to try for another baby and then..."
"He got his boy."
"He did." Jade nods "And there has been clear favoritism for Drew ever since we found out his gender at my twenty-week check up. She finally figured it out this weekend, probably because it's the longest amount of time she's ever had to spend with him without me, and it had her really down. She needed someone to love her last night, and it needed to be me. She needed to know that I was there for her even if he's not."
"I understand."
"You look mad."
"I kinda am." Beck admits "Not at you or her, but at him. I don't understand how someone can bring a child into this world and not love them unconditionally."
"Neither do I." Jade sighs "But, that's her reality right now, unfortunately."
"What are you going to do?"
"The 'mommy blogs' are telling me to let her continue to see him until she vocalizes that she doesn't want to anymore." Jade says "That way she feels like she had some say in it and came to terms with it on her own rather than feeling like I made the choice for her."
"I'm so sorry."
"Don't be..." She shakes her head "I'm the one who chose to have kids with him."
"Well..."
"Well what?"
"I've always gotten the impression that you never planned to." Beck admits "Sorry if that sounds bad but..."
"No, you're right." Jade assures him "Harper wasn't planned at all. I was actually planning to break up with him before I found out I was pregnant. But when I told him, he proposed. And I felt like I owed it to her to at least give it a shot, since my parents really didn't do the same for me. Then the whole 'well there's such ages gaps between us and our siblings, we want different for our kids' thing came up...so we had Drew. But looking back I don't think he ever cared that much about the age gap, I think he was just desperate for a boy."
"I know we just got together officially this weekend, and we're not even close to talking about what a future would look like..." Beck states "But I can promise you, I would never do anything like that. To your or to Harper or Drew. I'm all in, no terms or conditions whatsoever."
"That's because you're a good guy." Jade kisses his cheek quickly "And I love that about you."
