Jade knew that eventually, as long as things continued to go well between the two of them, it would become inevitable for Beck to start spending more time with Harper and Drew. Her children are the biggest and most important part of her life and as her relationship with Beck starts to become more serious, she realizes that he should be allowed to be part of it as well.
To some respect, Harper and Drew already know Beck. However, they only know him as one of her friends though, the same way that they know Tori and Andre to be her friends. All of the research that she has done tells her that this is for the best, her kids are still young enough that the idea of a 'boyfriend' might be confusing to them. Ultimately she decides that it's best to ease them into things in as casual of a way as possible.
"CANNONBALL!" Harper exclaims, plugging her nose and jumping into the pool
The splash she creates is nowhere near the size that she thinks it is, but displaces the water enough and sends ripples throughout the pool.
"Nice one..." Jade chuckles as her daughter paddles towards her "You got us wet."
"Yeah!" Drew pouts "I got wet!"
"S'a pool, buddy..." Jade reminds him with a smirk "You're supposed to get wet."
"No splashes."
"I can't make you any promises."
"I'm going again!" Harper announces as she swims over to the steps in the shallow end of the pool to exit it
"Okay..." Jade laughs
Despite both children being close in age and clad in life jackets and arm floaties, it's easy to tell that Harper is older. She's much more independent and can move herself around the pool without needing a whole lot of help while Drew sticks close to his mother, preferring to be held in her arms a majority of the time.
"Do you want to try and jump?" Jade asks Drew as Harper launches herself into the pool again "I'll catch you."
"No." Drew shakes his head "I stay here."
"Alright, that's fine."
This is a typical summer Saturday for Jade and her kids. While the pool can sometimes be a hassle to maintain, Harper and Drew love it. Plus it tires them out and makes them more likely to fall asleep early, which Jade loves.
"Hey Harper..." Beck says, swimming over to where the little girl is floating "You want to try something fun?"
"Hmm..." Harper hesitates for a moment "What?"
Thankfully, neither she or her brother had found it out of the ordinary or asked any questions when Jade mentioned that one of her friends would be coming over to swim with them today. Neither of them seem overly phased by Beck's being there, and might even be enjoying it a bit. He's someone new that they're not used to seeing, and unbeknownst to them he's trying to impress them, so they've had fun trying to catch his attention.
"S'like doing a backwards cannonball." He tells her
"What?" Harper laughs "That doesn't make any sense!"
"Do you trust me?" He asks her, taking her in his arms
"Uhh..." Harper looks to Jade for approval, and she nods "Okay."
"Alright, so when you do a cannonball you start out of the water, right?"
"Right!"
"But now we're in the water." Beck points out "So I'll just hold you out here a little bit and on the count of three...one...two...three!"
Beck quickly lifts Harper up, throwing her a few feet into the air above him and then catching her again as she hits the water. Jade holds her breath the entire time, and doesn't release it until her daughter is safely back in her boyfriend's arms. A smile spreads across her face when she hears Harper bust into a fit of giggles with a wide grin.
"Again!" She cheers "Again, again!"
"Alright." Beck chuckles "Ready? One...two...three!"
Any anxiety Jade had about the danger of the action is gone now, knowing that Beck would never put her children in harm's way. He isn't throwing her that high, and catches her every time. The interaction between the two of them makes her heart begin to melt.
This is good. This is going well.
"I try!" Drew insists, trying to break from Jade's arms and swim towards Beck "I go now!"
"It's my turn, Drew!" Harper insists
"Come on now, we can let your brother try." Beck tells her "Don't worry, I've got strong arms. I can do this all day."
"You sure about that?" Jade raises an eyebrow at him
"You know what I meant." Beck laughs "Drew, can you swim over here?"
Drew shakes his head to say no.
"I bet you can. Here, I'll help you out." Beck, still holding Harper, takes a step closer to him "How about now?"
"Go ahead and try, baby." Jade says to him quietly "I've heard you've been doing really well in swimming lessons, and I'll be right behind you if you need to grab me."
"Okay..." Drew nods
Jade holds him out in front of her a bit so that he doesn't accidentally kick her when he pushes off, and Drew starts to half-kick half-paddle his way towards Beck's open arm. In reality, he only has to swim a stretch of ten feet, but that's pretty far for a two and a half year-old. Jade, Beck, and Harper all cheer for the little boy once he's close enough for Beck to grab and pull close to him.
"I did it!" Drew cheers, arms stretched into the air
"Yes you did!" Beck bounces him gently in his arm "Good job!"
"Great job, Drew!" Jade grins
Beck is holding both Harper and Drew in his arms, one on each side, and for a moment Jade catches a glimpse of what could have been...what life could have been like for her children with two parents who are together and happy. She isn't sure if she's wishing for the concept, or wishing that it had been Beck all along from the very beginning. She doesn't have time to think about it too deeply, because Harper swims towards her so that Beck can throw Drew up into the air.
"He's fun, Mama!" She smiles as she stops kicking and floats next to Jade "Can he come over every time we swim?"
"We'll see..." Jade laughs, helping Harper pull her goggles off of her face "I'm glad you're having fun."
Once Harper and Drew grew tired of swimming, Jade brought them inside to give them a bath while Beck worked on ordering them dinner. Jade spread a blanket out on the floor in front of the TV so the four of them could sit, Harper and Drew clad in their pajamas, and watch Coco while they ate their pizza. An 'indoor picnic' as they called it, which Beck found both creative and adorable at the same time.
Both kids fell asleep not long after the movie was over, exhausted from an afternoon full of sunshine and swimming. Jade carried them each to bed while Beck kept a watchful eye on the other, then the couple retreated to Jade's mater bathroom to take a post-swim shower. Together, of course.
"The kids really like you." Jade tells him emerging from her closet in an old t-shirt and a pair of running shorts
"I really like them." Beck smiles, drying his hair with a towel "They're great kids. You've done a good job with them."
"Thanks." Jade smiles a bit "I...I'm trying."
"And you're succeeding."
"In all seriousness though, it means a lot that you've been so...I dunno...open...to the fact that I have kids." Jade admits "I know they make a relationship a bit more complicated than it would be with someone who doesn't have any."
"I love you." Beck reminds her "Every part of you. Your kids are part of who you are, so of course I'm going to love them as well. They don't complicate anything, they make the whole thing better."
"You're sweet." Jade smiles, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around his neck "I don't deserve you."
"Thank you for trusting me enough to be a part of their lives." He pecks her quickly on the lips "I know how big of a deal this is."
"Thank you for willing to be a part of them." Jade tells him
"Like I said, they're great kids." Beck reminds her "I'd be an idiot to walk away from a chance like that."
