Aaron stood by the cart at the grocery store, stewing. In front of him, his father was talking to a pretty lady. He was putting his fingers through his hair and doing the nervous laugh, both things that Jack usually did around Kate. He saw the large display of cantaloupe and thought of his mom.

Kate loved cantaloupe and it had been a tradition that she stole Jack's cantaloupe and he stole her honeydew. Aaron stared at his father, trying to imagine if Jack would switch fruit with someone else. Would they think of each other when they saw the fruit the other loved? Did they think of each other at all?

Aaron knew he needed to break them up and fast. It was bad enough his mom was going on a date with his teacher; if his dad found someone else it would be even harder to bring them together. So, he did the only thing he could think of.

He grabbed a cantaloupe and carried it over to Jack and threw it on the ground.

"Aaron!" Jack yelled. "You know better!" Jack stared at the orange fruit smashed on the floor. Cantaloupe. Kate's favorite. He knew Aaron knew it was her favorite. He also knew it wasn't a coincidence that Aaron chose cantaloupe out of everything in the store. Jack was talking to another woman and his son brought a piece of Kate to his feet and smashed it.

Jack knew he needed someone Aaron trusted to talk to him.

Jack knew he needed his mom.

Jack waited until Aaron went to bed to call Kate. He didn't know what came over him but he invited Kate over, knowing it was a serious conversation. But when she showed up in a tight striped sweater, skinny jeans and flats it still took him by surprise. Even if he could bring himself to move on, he wondered if he'd ever find a woman as beautiful as her.

"Are you going to let me in?" Kate asked; she tilted her head to the side and let out a small giggle. He stepped to the side and let her walk in first, giving him a chance to stare at her ass. "Are you checking me out?" She asked, turning her head and raising an eyebrow.

They both took a moment to remember the first days of their meeting when she'd said the same thing. He thought of the girl on the beach, her messy curls and olive skin; it was hard to believe she was the put together woman who stood in front of him with straight hair. He wondered if Kate compared his island self to his current self. He couldn't pick between island Kate and current Kate, he loved them both. It hurt that he knew Kate had a preference.

"Is everything okay?" Kate asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"It's Aaron."

"What? What happened?" Kate's voice rose.

Jack leapt forward and covered her mouth with his hand. "Shhhh, he's asleep!" Jack said softly. Kate nodded and he released his hand. "Today at the grocery store, I was talking to a…" he looked down "talking to a person—"

"—You can say it was a woman."

Jack sighed. "Talking to a woman and Aaron brought a cantaloupe and just smashed it on the floor!"

"Aaron did that? It's so unlike him."

"He was so mad in the car on the way home."

"Now that you bring it up…"

"What is it?"

"He's been acting out in class. He's just been acting out, especially around his teacher."

"The teacher who asked you out?" Jack raised an eyebrow. Kate sighed, giving him an unamused glance. He knew Kate well enough to know that look meant she was trying to look unimpressed but deep down she was amused.

"I don't think he's ready for us to start dating," Kate said softly. "We can switch days whenever you have a date so that Aaron doesn't see it."

"I can do the same for you."

"I'm not too worried about that," she said softly. Jack thought of them switching schedules so Kate could go on a weekend getaway with Aaron's teacher.

He wanted to ask her what she meant. He wanted to learn every detail of her dates. He wanted to know why she wasn't worried. He wanted to know why she assumed he'd date anyone else. He'd only talked to the girl at the grocery store to try and get over Kate.

"I thought if he could stay here one more night—"

"Yeah, of course."

"I want my mom to come see him."

Kate smiled. "Calling in the reinforcement, huh?" Aaron and Margo had a close knit relationship. Aaron considered his grandma his best friend and biggest confidant.

Jack stepped closer, taking a deep inhale of her perfume. "You know this is just a phase. We're on the same page. You can count on me."

"I've always known I could count on you," she smiled. The two locked eyes, sharing a silent moment, both of them struggling to understand the feelings that were brewing. "I should go. It's late," Kate whispered.

"Kate," Jack whispered when she'd stepped out of the doorway. He just wanted to see her again. There was something about seeing her tonight that had him mesmerized. The jealousy of the teacher who had gotten at least one date with her; the concern in her green eyes; even the way her clothes hugged every curve. He wanted to make her his again. "Thanks for coming over so fast," he managed.

"I'm always a call away," she said softly "We're always going to be connected, Jack." She gave him one last smile before heading down the hall.

"I hear something's up with you," Margo said bluntly, driving in the car with Aaron. She was the one person who was always honest and direct. When Aaron didn't reply, she sighed. "I hear your mom is dating again."

"I don't want to talk about that!" He growled, crossing his arms. "And now Dad is going to date, too!"

"Why does that upset you?"

"It isn't how I wanted it to happen!"

"How did you want it to happen?" She pressed.

"I'm trying to get Mom and Dad back together. I've been trying to bring them together so they fall in love again."

"Is your moms slashed tire a way to bring them together?" When Aaron stayed quiet she smiled. "That's a smart idea."

"I know it's dumb and I know I'm going to get in trouble," he grumbled.

"Actually, I was going to ask if you needed a sidekick," she shrugged.

"Really, Grandma?"

"I've always thought your parents belonged together and I think your plan is crazy enough that it just might work." She winked at her grandson.
