15—Surprise, Surprise!

Sakura was nervous as she and Gaara sat in the doctor's office. No one outside of Hinata's family and Naruto knew that Sakura was pregnant. Hiashi had forbidden anyone from saying anything. Ino didn't even know; which was probably for the best, as she couldn't keep a secret to save her life. Meyumi and Hinata were there for support. Sakura almost jumped out of her skin when her name was called. They'd decided on a doctor in Tokyo so that her parents wouldn't hear about it before she was ready to tell them. She looked at Gaara, who nodded and squeezed her hand as they headed into the back.

After her vitals were taken, she was told to lie down on the table and that the doctor would be in soon. She was so nervous she was shaking. She looked over when she noticed Gaara drawing little circles on her hands with his finger. She smiled at how he stared directly at her. He kissed her hand and she felt herself calming down. With a sigh she closed her eyes and concentrated on taking deep breaths.

She jumped slightly when the door opened and the doctor walked in. He had shaggy red hair and glasses. He was tall, about a head taller than Gaara, and seemed to be frowning at something. When he looked up, he dropped his clipboard. Sakura stared at him curiously, but he seemed a bit distressed to see her. He cleared his throat and picked his clipboard back up. He smiled nervously at her.

"Well hello there, my name is Dr. Hatori. What can I help you with today?" Sakura arched a brow and looked at Gaara, who had his eyes narrowed on the man.

"We need to know how far along in the pregnancy she is." She nodded, hoping they could determine exactly when she'd gotten pregnant. She looked up at Gaara, who didn't seem to like the doctor. When she looked at the doctor, he was glaring at Gaara.

"I'm guessing you're the father?" The doctor asked in a cold tone. Sakura gasped and felt tears gathering in her eyes. She instantly felt Gaara at her side and she buried her face against his stomach. She heard Gaara growling low in his throat.

"Yes, I'm the father. I love Sakura and I'm going to be there for the baby and for her. If you have a problem with that, then you can get the hell out of here." He hissed and tensed when the doctor took an imposing step closer. Something about this man triggered the memory of her father advancing on her and slapping her and she threw up her hands, clearly frightened.

Gaara noticed the man freeze, his eyes wide with shock. "What's wrong with her? Why did she react like that?" There was panic in the man's voice as he regarded Sakura. Why was this man so interested in Sakura suddenly?

"Her father hit her about a month ago. He left a nasty bruise on her face. Ever since then, acts of aggression frighten her." He arched a brow when all color drained from the man's face and he sat heavily on the rolling doctor's chair.

"He…he hit her? Why?" Gaara ran his hands through Sakura's hair, his eyes narrowed on the man.

"Does it matter? Does he need a reason? The fact is he hit her." Gaara was shocked when tears gathered in the man's eyes and he clenched his fists against his thighs. He looked at his lap, his eyes shut tightly against reality.

"No, it's doesn't matter. The fact is that he hit her. He actually hit her. Self-righteous bastard!" Gaara could feel Sakura trembling against him and he ran his hands through her hair once more. Something was weird with this doctor.

"Who are you? Why does any of this matter to you?" Gaara asked as he slowly put himself between the strange man and Sakura. The man shook his head with a humorless laugh.

"It doesn't surprise me she knows nothing of me. They probably made up some stupid story about me to her. They probably never told her what really happened." Sakura sat bolt upright then and stared at the young doctor sitting in front of her. Her eyes widened and she pointed at him.

"You…you're…but they said…you're supposed to be in Africa!" The red headed doctor arched a brow and took his glasses off, showing off those emerald eyes that mirrored Sakura's.

"What lie did they feed you, Sakura? That I was some missionary in Africa?" Sakura stared at the man before her, confused, hurt and scared. The man noticed and he sighed.

"Sakura, you have to know that if I could have come to see you, I would have. You're my little sister." Gaara's eyes widened in shock as Sakura regarded her older brother. The man sighed and ran his hands over his face. He took a deep breath before he looked up at his sister. "First off, we check to see how your baby is doing." He glared at Gaara, who glared right back. "Then we discuss our family issues."

The man put his glasses back on and stood. He put the jelly on her stomach and used the paddle to try and find the child. His face was scrunched in concentration. Gaara could tell Sakura was holding her breath and he couldn't help but be a little nervous as well. Something strange flashed over the screen and Sakura let out a cry. The man was smiling, despite himself, and Gaara was confused. "What's wrong? Sakura, are you alright?" He asked and pressed closer to her. She looked up at him, adoration and tears of joy in her yes.

"That's our baby!" She whispered happily and grabbed his hand. He looked back at the monitor and stared. He couldn't tell what was what. It seemed Sakura's brother understood and he pointed out the baby.

"This," he drew a circle around the center of the monitor, "is your baby. From the size and progress of development, it seems you're just over two months along." Sakura looked so happy that it was hard for her brother to stay angry about her being pregnant. He then turned all professional on her. "I would suggest running a few tests to see if there are any hereditary anomalies. A history of both sides would make it easier for us to keep an eye out for certain hereditary diseases and such."

He noticed Gaara look up with cold eyes. "Both my parents are dead and I have no living adult relatives to tell me anything about them. My oldest living relative is my nineteen-year-old sister." It seemed this information shocked Sakura's brother, because he just stared, his mouth slightly agape.

"I…I'm sorry, I didn't realize…" Gaara shrugged and leaned in to nuzzle Sakura, his nose against her cheek.

"It doesn't matter. Sakura's my family now. She's everything." He said quietly as he stroked her hair. She smiled up at him and squeezed his hand. There was a brief silence and then Dr. Hatori cleared his throat.

"Well, I'm taking my lunch. Join me, would you?" Both teens looked at one another before nodding.

"I have my best friend and her mother here. They…they've been taking care of me since…" She looked down as tears gathered in her eyes. Gaara kissed her forehead.

"She's been staying with the Hyuugas since her father hit her. Hiashi-sama would not allow her back into the house once he found out. Her parents have been in America, seeking counseling." Gaara supplied as he helped Sakura up and fix her clothing. You couldn't really even tell she was pregnant. She just looked like she'd gained a bit of weight, which wouldn't be surprising if she had because she'd been eating better with the Hyuugas than at home. Her mother hated cooking, so they always ate instant meals. Something Sakura didn't have a taste for.

"They are more than welcome to join us. My treat." Sakura and Gaara looked at one another before Sakura nodded shyly. She wanted to know more and she wanted to know the truth, not just some lie her parents fed her.
