It had been a century since he was with her, a century since Caroline left her home town and went to live with Klaus. It was morning, they were lying next to each other, wrapped in sheets when he asks, "You were not as cheerful tonight as you always are ."
She turns around and places a soft kiss on her lips, a smile plastered to her face which he knows is not real, she is sad about something and he wants to know why, he wants to take her pain away.
"I see you have found a wonderful way to divert my attention sweetheart but you should know that your happiness is my top priority, nothing could distract me when I know the love of my life is sad about something I have no knowledge of."
She looks down and then back up to his eyes, "Nothing, I was just feeling nostalgic, I was missing my friends."
"Which ones? May I ask?"
She turns around grabs the calendar from the night stand and shows him the date, "It's Elena's birthday, normally she Bonnie and I would have celebrated it, thrown a surprise party and all. But Bonnie and Elena both have lived their lives and died. I miss them that's it."
"Make new ones" He answers as casually.
"Klaus, they are irreplaceable, no matter how many friends I make, no one would ever take their place in my heart, in my life." She says the last part feeling a bit sad.
And Klaus knows how much loss she went through, first, her father, then her mother, then she became the mother of two twins, who lived their lives happily and have died too, married and widowed the same day because of the evil Katherine Pierce, all her friends grew old and died, that's when he showed up at her door to help her start her life afresh.
Normally he would avoid talks on them and divert the topic but he knows they all hold a special place in her heart so today he doesn't instead he chooses to entertain her, to question, to let her talk her feelings because he knows for sure that Caroline is a lot emotional on the inside when it comes to people from her hometown, when it comes to her childhood friends.
He asks with a slight smirk on his face, "You and Elena always fought like wild cats but when it came down to it she would die for you and you would kill for her. I honestly thought your friendship with hers was a fake, ever thought you would feel sad on her birthday."
She squints her eyes at him and playfully slaps him on his chest, "Klaus, we didn't fight like cats."
"Yes you did" he says mocking her, "Damon told me."
She pauses for a moment remembering how Damon was to her, how he used and manipulated her, Klaus has heard about it from her but only after Damon died, he sees the shift in her face and sits up and asks, "How could you forgive Elena for marrying the man who abused you? How could you Caroline?"
"Because she didn't know, she didn't know till her last breathe because I didn't tell her and neither did Damon. All she learnt was that Damon was using me as his blood bag, she never knew the other part of the story but the minute she saw how bruises on my back, the minute she learnt that Damon hurt me, she revolted, she confronted Damon and threatened him to stay away from me, she took a stand for me Klaus like no one ever did, we might fight like cats but we were like sisters to each other. She stood up for those things girls our age wouldn't even dare to talk."
He agrees, he sees it in her when she talks, the same level of love for Elena as he has his brotherly love for Elijah but when it comes down to it, these girls would fight like cats just like he and his brother would fight like dogs when having a disagreement. He places a caressing hand on the side of her face as he sees a tear droplet fall from her eyes, "But he wasn't just feeding off of you was he?"
He has heard her tell this story to her many times and each time his blood boils in anger, tonight he wishes to comfort thinking it won't happen again and he would envelope her into his safe arms and tell her he won't let any harm reach her, he wants her to let it all out, he wants her to release the tension within, so he asks her again, "Tell me Caroline, share it to me, you will feel lighter."
Taking a huge breathe she says, "When I saw Damon the first time, I just thought that he was hot and we ended up on his bed but then he revealed to me what he truly was, he fed from me, dig his fangs on me brutally and I screamed and no one came. No one. Stefan was in the house, of course he heard but didn't intervene with what was going on."
He was caressing her waiting for the worst part, the part which has his blood boiling, yes she adjusted along with Damon because of Elena but she didn't had to but she told him Elena never knew the other part of the story had she known, she would have killed Damon herself. Making her talk, letting her take all of it out, works as a therapy he has experienced over their time together, so he lets her, each time she feels like she has the need to. Other people would have tried to avoid hearing the topic they have heard so many times of but he wouldn't, he knows it's sort of a therapy so he won't, no matter how many times he has to hear this story from her.
Caroline continues, "The next morning when woke up, I just wanted to leave and never return, never look at him again, never return to this place again but Damon woke up, he stopped me and after that every time I slept with him, he compelled me for it, he compelled me to be his bed mate and to accompany him to the founder's ball. I was sure he was going to kill that night had Stefan not spiked my drink with vervain."
He brings her head to rest on his chest and strokes her hair
"You were just a child Caroline, you, Bonnie and Elena all three of you were, you were just seventeen year old teenagers who were pushed into the vampire world. And no vampire should use their gift like this, to spoil children, women."
She wraps his arms around him as she continues "When Elena learnt about them being vampires, she gifted a vervain necklace to all her friends and to me so that not only Damon but no other vampire would be able to harm me that way. That is what makes Elena my most irreplaceable friend along with Bonnie. The way she stood up for me back then, no one did. I even doubt Stefan would have thought twice about saving me back then had he not being so smitten by Elena, as he has let so many women being used and killed by his brother.
"And not to mention when I was a newly turned vampire Damon wanted me dead, Bonnie wouldn't even look at me Elena stood by my side against them and so did Stefan."
"Caroline, the only reason that Damon's lineage is still alive, is because his blood is mixed with Elena's. I am not saying this because I want a doppelganger as blood bag in future but I am saying this to tell you that I know what Elena meant to you"
He leaves in a fit of rage, this story each time gets to him.
Later that night, Klaus returns with a big cake, on his instructions his house has been decorated before Caroline would return from work, and when she does, she is greeted by an in house party, the kind she mentioned, she Bonnie and Elena used to have. Klaus brings a huge cake for her and they enjoy their evening watching the clip of a Salvatore musical which Caroline's school's students made long ago.
