"You are so freakin' ugly."
"Wow, thanks a-lot, older brother; you're the best."
I watched the smirk grow on my brother's face while he drove. "I'm just protecting you; I have to remind you everyday so-"
"So I don't try to get a boyfriend, I know," I finshed for him. I've been getting reminded of how ugly I am ever since I started at Beacon Hills High and it's almost become a routine. I don't get how I'm so ugly if I look like my brother but there's some things you don't argue with, with him.
"Look, I'm just trying to save you from rejection."
"Sure you are, Stiles."
I notice Stiles turning into the parking lot of our school, and we sigh at the same time. Not only do I look like Stiles, I act just like him, too, even down to the way we dress. It's probably why I barely have friends now.
No, Stiles is definitely why I don't have friends. I was just fourteen in the eighth grade when Stiles and his best friend, Scott- who's also like an older brother -dragged me into this world of the supernatural.
Scott is an Alpha werewolf; his girlfriend, Kira, is a fox with some electrical power stuff; Lydia, she's a Banshee; my brother just got over being possessed by an evil spirit; and his girlfriend, Malia, is a werewolf coyote.
Me? I'm just an awkward freshman girl who is tired as fuck because my idiotic brother and his girlfriend. I actually forgot about bringing it up at the breakfast table, but thinking about Malia reminded me.
"I know having a girlfriend is cool and all," I started, looking back at Stiles driving, "but our rooms are right next to eachother, and my brother having sex is not something I'm too fond of hearing."
Stiles inhaled but didn't speak. I kept my eyes trained on him as he ran his tongue over his lips and looked from left to right. Again Stiles sighed, and I couldn't help but laugh at him.
"I'm honestly sorry if I traumatized you. Like truly, truly sorry."
"It's okay; when I lose my virginity I'll just make sure to give all the bloody details."
Stiles gagged. "Don't make me kill you."
Again, I laughed at my sibling but this time, I put a hand out for us to do our goodbye handshake since he was now parked in front of the freshman-sophmore entrance.
"Have a good day, love you," Stiles says as we finish. I give him a nod, then a hug before I get out of the car. Stiles backs up and turns towards the junior-senior entrance. Something makes me stay and watch him drive away instead of going inside of the school.
"Boo!" Somebody yells in my ear, and taps me roughly, making me jump and spin to face the idiot with a racing heart.
I'm able to sigh in relief and calm down when I see the person who scared me was just Hayden, a girl who's been my best friend since the third grade. She's standing there with her black hair in it's usual wavy style framing her smiling face.
"It's too early for heart attacks," I said, giving her my own smile. She came in for a hug that I happily accepted.
The girl has been my friend from the time we were both in the hospital, our rooms right next door from each other while we were being prepped, and recovering from transplant surgeries at the same time.
After the hug, the two of us began to walk towards the school entrance where we would go to our shared homeroom.
"Were you and Stiles wearing matching shirts?" Hayden asked, using the back of her knuckles to tap my arm.
"Half of both of our wardrobes are plaid shirts and I didn't plan it."
"Kind of sibling goals."
I gave her a fake gag just as we walked into our homeroom and her response was an immediate frown. What the hell? I kept my eyes trained on the side of her face, now contorted in confusion.
"Look," she said, nodding at our seats. When I did what she said, I saw two people sitting at the lab table we shared. "That's-"
I cut her off, already knowing the answer, "Liam Dunbar."
The story of Liam Dunbar, Hayden and I dates back to the sixth grade; my first ever suspension, my first ever fight, and my first ever black eye.
Liam Dunbar was fighting, my best friend thought she could be a savior of some sort and went to break it up, but that resulted in her being elbowed in her newly developing breasts we were so excited for. It made me way too angry, and I punched him in his nose for her, which got me my own punch in the eye and that made Hayden angry enough to punch Liam again in the nose, breaking it.
It was teamwork but Liam and I were the only two with bruises and very awkward yearbook photos. My brother and my father were furious; I kind of got a kick out of it.
"He's in our seats," Hayden pointed out the obvious, glancing at me as if she was waiting for what I should do. Liam had gotten cute; he had an adorable baby face complete with baby blue eyes and rosy plump lips.
Someone bumping into me from behind reminded me of how long we had been standing in the doorway, and I grabbed Hayden's arm and pulled her forward. We had no choice but to sit in seats that weren't next to each other; two people were inbetween us.
I couldn't help glancing back at Liam, and as soon as I did, my own emerald eyes connected with a pair of glacial blue eyes. My pounding heart had to be audible to him. I wasn't even sure why I felt so nervous but I didn't like it.
I cringed when I noticed how sweaty my palms were, and turned in my seat to face the board. My favorite time of the day; learning time!
I wouldn't say I was a nerd buuuuttt, I definitely was an overachiever! I hated beacon hills, and wanted to get a nice successful career. That means sports, tutoring, and straight A's. Along with Scott's problems- no friends. I have Hayden at least; but she talks my ear off no matter what. I love her though.
"So you gonna go for Soccer or softball?" Hayden asked as strolled down the hall to the cafeteria because it was now time for lunch.
"I don't know. Anything that would get me noticed, and not take up more of my life then it should." Gauging my time at this age was so unnatural but if no one did then my dad would never retire paying Stiles old hospital bills.
Turns out it costs a lot of money to get possessed and go crazy.
"Well I hope you decide before tomorrow; All male sports end tomorrow and then it's time for us women to get a chance at a little bit of attention from a coach," Hayden blabbed. She definitely wanted me to play soccer with her, and I wanted to, too, but I needed to be the star of the team for whatever I did. I was a freaking star pitcher. My dad had one son who wasn't good at anything so that left little ole me to catch baseballs in the yard.
"I'm gonna decide, don't worry about it." We walked through the open doors of the cafeteria and skipped straight over to the line like the hungry hippos we were. Like Hayden had said, boys had tryouts today, so the cafe was almost half empty as many of the people had taken advantage of their free period to go to Basketball, lacrosse, or swimming tryout practice. Still, the nerdy, athletically challenged people were heavy in here.
Hayden and I both were the quiet types, she was much more outspoken than I was- but one look at us and you'd know we played sports. She was super compact and tall, standing at 5'7, four inches taller than me. I definitely have more of a pear shape; a small chest but wide at the bottom, thanks to all the squatting and bending from softball. My body and my face doesn't matter, because Stiles, my dad, and Scott don't allow males to come in contact with me and I don't think they will until I'm at least thirty years old.
"I'm just saying though, we'd be able to spend more time if you chose soccer." Hayden dragged out her words and wiggled her eyebrows suggestively at me.
"As if we need to spend any more time together."
"I mean ever since last year that's exactly how it's been feeling. You're always with your brother and his friends, no sleepovers, always canceling. I don't get it."
"You know my brother went through a lot last year- and his friends. They needed a lot of help, but things are looking normal this year, so just relax." It was true. Between reptilian shapeshifters, evil alpha werewolves, evil alpha werewolf packs, and Japanese demons, things seemed to be going pretty smoothly. So far.
And just as I thought I could enjoy the rest of my day, I was looking straight into the blue eyes of a boy I had not spoken to since I was a child. He was built for our age, and almost the same height as me. So like, short. Him and his friend Mason blocked the path Hayden and I were trying to take to get to class. It was so hard not to stare at the way his shirt was hugging his body. When I say built? I meant built.
"Stilinski," greeted me, "Funny I see you after your brother was just harassing me at lacrosse practice."
Stiles is so embarrassing. I don't know what he could've said, but if you think my older brother let go of a three year grudge then seek mental help. Hayden spoke for me, "what does that have to do with us, loser?"
Guess who else hadn't let it go?
Liam squinted his blue eyes, giving Hayden a sneer before turning back to me, "just make sure your brother stays away from me. I'm not a kid anymore."
Was he threatening my brother? I gasped at his words, protective younger sister mode was kicking in, "Excuse me!"
"Awe, the kid who got beat up by two girls is seeking his revenge now, huh? Grow up, Dunbar!" Oh yeah, Hayden definitely did not like him still. I'm glad she was here though, getting to act as my voice while I stood kind of sheepish. Confrontation was not my forte. "What are you even doing back here?"
"Mind your business, dude," Liam turned back to me and said in a softer tone, "just make sure he leaves me alone. I don't want any trouble here."
I saw a glint of something in his eye, but I brushed it off because it wasn't my problem. Instead I just nodded my head in response to his pleas, and he allowed Hayden and I to walk through him and his friend. Hayden looks super annoyed but truthfully that was just a Hayden thing. I was so quiet she always felt the need to protect me, but I was cool with that.
"Don't let him bother you, we don't have to talk to him at all," I tried to reassure her, nudging her slightly.
"I know! But who does he think he is? Stopping us like that. The boys are probably just having some petty argument about lacrosse."
After a second of thinking I shook my head, "maybe, but Stiles probably- no- definitely brought me up. I'm his life."
"Yeah, sure." We reached the hall where we would be splitting to go to seperate classes. Hayden looked down at me, like she was waiting for my response.
"I'll see you later, remember I have to go watch my brothers tryouts- for good luck." I gave her a smile. I felt bad because I'm sure she wanted to hang out more, like she was just insinuating during lunch, buuuutttt I couldn't leave big bro hanging.
"Yeah, sure," she repeated, walking into her class without a second glance. Oh boy….
Hayden didn't even come with me to lacrosse tryouts, but my brother's girlfriend did. Oddly, she was carrying books but not as odd- looking extremely confused. "Hey, B," she said as she sat down.
"What's up, Malia?" I observed the textbooks she held in her hands. Almost every freaking subject. Malia literally is just not getting introduced to the rights and wrongs of society, thanks to Stiles being a good boyfriend. I tried to help her with school, I mean I was literally a tutor, but she had the attention span of, well, my brother.
"What's up is that I cannot do this anymore," she whined. Her eyebrows were drawn together so tight that the creases in her forehead looked impenetrable. "This whole school thing? I'm so over it."
"Listen, you got this, just give yourself some more time. The whole group struggles with the balance of school, life, and the supernatural," I tried my best to reassure her, "you literally live with us, I can tutor you!"
She smiled a small smile at me and I held out my fist. That smile quickly faded into another eyebrow drawn, confused look. I sometimes forget about her lack of social skills. I grabbed her wristlet gently and made her hand into a fist. "You just….pound your fist into mine."
I mimicked a fist bump with her hand under my control and then my own and she nodded slowly in understanding. "Like this?"
Malia drew her fist back and actually pounded it into mine. It took everything in me not to scream in pain. Whew… but I couldn't break it to her that she could've just broken my wrist. I forced a smile and nodded my head, "yeah, maybe a little bit gentler, though."
Scott's 'girlfriend' joined us next, greeting Malia and I with a smile. It was so cute that my brother's girlfriends were so supportive! A while ago I wouldn't think I would even be doing this- watching them play our school's biggest sport while their girlfriends watched. I could almost cry!
After a second, Malia raised her head and deadpanned to Kira, "What's wrong with you?" Kira snapped her head to look at Malia who explained, "You reek of anxiety."
I matched Kira's shocked look and sniffed at my underarm, "You can smell that?"
They didn't give me a second glance, Kira just looked to the floor like she was grateful that the attention was off of her but Malia was persistent, "It's distracting. What's wrong with you?"
Kira shook her head as she spoke, "Scott and I sort of had this thing happen. But it wasn't much of a thing. And I'm starting to think it never was anything at all." Damn, I could smell the anxiety, too.
"Well, what do you want it to be?" Malia asked her. I turned my head from Malia to Kira, awaiting her answer.
Kira looked off into space, sighed, and then looked to the ground, "more."
I felt bad for her, but I wasn't sure if she fully understood what Scott was going through right now. He had just lost his literal first love, no matter what he was probably in too weird of a space to be trying to make the first move with Kira. Honestly I felt so bad for the group of them and the shit they had been going through for a year and a half now. They barely had time to live their lives- I hope it will go better for them this year.
Malia focused back on her work and I focused back on the game going on. They boys had lined up and were taking turns throwing the ball at the goalee. I remember watching them do this last year when Scott got his werewolf powers and started blowing through nets like they were made of wet paper. Good times.
It was my brother's turn, and I watched intensly. Don't embarrass me, brother! Stiles scooped up the ball and ran forward, chucking it hard until it landed….right into the goalie's net. Who was standing still. So much for not being embarrassing, right? I still shouted, "Go Stiles!"
He smiled and waved at me, then turned around and started towards the back of the line. Behind him was Liam Dunbar, and big bro made sure to jump at him before returning to his spot at the back of the line. Oh boy…
I watched as Liam went next- he scooped up the ball and threw it across the line with ease, wearing a confident smirk as it flew right by the goalie. Holy shit. He was actually looking to be a good player. I couldn't even take my eyes off of him as the team cheered him on. Chubby Liam Dunbar had gotten really cute.
"Why'd your heart start pounding so fast?" Malia asked me, looking up from her studies. That was so annoying sometimes.
"It's Scott's turn," I made up a quick excuse and focused my attention on the field. I could feel Malia staring at the side of my head but I just continued my gaze forward. Scott would score this goal for sure, right? I watched him pick up the ball and give a great big swing that….hit the goal post?
Everyone laughed at Scott, just like they had done at Stiles. Well, time to be a supportive little sis! "You got this, Scott!" I shouted, clapping my hands with a big ole smile. I literally wanted to leave; maybe I was actually like bad luck or something.
Scott and Stiles sucked even more throughout the time they were practicing shots…but Liam? He was killing everyone on the team, landing shot after shot after shot. It was very impressive, coming from someone who appreciated sports and the talent that came with it. Kira nudged me with her elbow and whispered, "Isn't the captain supposed to be the best on the team? Or at least…good?"
I was just as perplexed as her, and shook my head slowly. I had no answer for her. I wasn't sure what was wrong with Scott, and I don't even understand how he kept missing with actual super powers. But they switched positions and my brothers were now guarding the goalie, so maybe here is where they would shine.
Coach blew the whistle, and the younger boys sprung right into action. Liam's friend, Garrett, was up first and I was damn near clenching as he ran up. PLEASE do not be any more embarrassing. Garret aimed for the shot like he would have the easiest time, and with a little spin move Scott and Stiles blocked him, and one hit his stick right out of his hand.
Everyone began cheering, Kira and Malia got really excited right along with me. Yes! Garret was one of those cocky jockey sports players so I was glad he got embarrassed! And that little trick literally set my boys in motion; every single player that came up was getting destroyed by their defense. Maybe they just needed to like warm up or something!
Then next up was Liam, he stood tall and strong, swinging his lacrosse stick in the air and scratching around the dirt. It was a second of intense staring down before he picked the ball up and charged at the boys. I thought that they would have this- easy!
But Lima was quick to dodge Stiles' block, juking him to the left. Then there was Scott who tried to use his stick to stop Liam, but Liam spun him, getting a perfect line of sight for a winning shot. Is this kid human? Wait… that might not be too far fetched.
Kira and I shared a grimace. She didn't even get how bad it was for the two of them to be losing to Liam all because of me. And it was worse for me because Stiles was apparently threatening Liam already, and I'm sure Scott wasn't too far behind him on that matter.
"That was luck!" Malia yelling from my side made me swivel with quickness to see her now standing up and pointing at the field. Oh no.. She continued, "Do over!"
"Oh come on, sweetheart, there are no do overs. This is a practice." Coach waved her off but Malia was not backing down.
"Ten bucks on Scott and Stiles," she bet, folding her arms and cocking her head to the side as a challenge. I just had a really bad feeling about this.
"I'll take that action," Coach accepted, "Liam get back in there!"
And there I was, clenching again as everyone got back into position. Liam shook his shoulders and bent down, ready to scoop the ball up again. Once he did, and the coach blew his whistle, Liam sprinted at Scott and Stiles. Stiles jumped in the air and tried to block Liam's shot but it wasn't enough- Liam was still going. But Scott was there, and he tucked his body down, slamming right into Liams leg and making him do a backflip. He landed hard. And he wasn't moving off the ground.
The whole team ran to surround Liam, coach screaming in panic as he ran up too. Liam tried to balance on both legs but he couldn't, and Scott and Stiles had to hold him up as he grimaced in pain. Scott and Stiles started dragging Liam away- and I couldnt even be sure that they weren't going to kill him at that point.
"I'll be back!" I yelled to Kira and Malia, and then ran down the bleachers to follow my brothers and limping Liam over there. I caught up quick, and I was literally seething.
"What did yall do?" I said through gritted teeth
"Your crazy brother and his jealous best friend just broke my fucking leg!" Liam yelled out in pain. Stiles scoffed and looked down at Liam's grimace.
"Don't curse at my sister, or I'll break the other one!"
"Stiles!" Scott and I both shouted in unison. Last thing I needed was Liam trying to make my life a living hell because they ruined his chances of playing Lacrosse. That would mean cosntsnt death stares and arguements with Hayden that I would have to be present for.
"It was an accident," Scott said to Liam, "I'm sorry."
All Liam did was grunt out in pain as a response. As we got near the nurses office I held the door open for them and watched them place him on the bench, explaining to the nurse what happened on the field as they did. I grabbed Stiles by his shirt shortly after and pulled him out of the room. "How could ya'll do that? I know Scott used his wolf strength. But why? Are you trying to get in trouble? Like he told me ya'll were threatening him earlier."
Stiles was all too relaxed, "No! I threatened him, without Scott. I just wanted to make sure he knew that just because he went to school here now that he stayed in his place. Away from you!"
"Well stop, I don't want you guys to get into any trouble this year. Little things like this are like what causes chain reactions and then boom- someone's dead!"
"Okay, I think you're maybe blowing things a little out of proportion."
"You know I'm not, Stiles." We held eachothers gaze for a few seconds. I tried to give him the best puppy dog eyes I could manage and I didn't let up until he sighed and gave me a big brotherly hug. I finished with, "I don't want to lose you again."
"I know." Stiles kissed the top of my head and we broke from our embrace.
Scott came out just a couple seconds later. "We have to take Liam to the hospital."
"This is what I mean!" I groaned, "Something is going to happen at the hospital and boom- normal life is over with."
"What is she talking about?" Scott asked Stiles, lifting his palms to the sky with a shrug.
"She's just being superstitious because now I can't give her a ride home." I didn't even think about that. Ew. No way I was going to take a bus.
"So I have to take the bus because Scott broke some kid's leg?" I stomped my foot unintentionally and earned some inquisitive looks from my brothers. It made my cheeks flush red. So much for not acting like a little girl, right?"
"Look, I didn't mean to break his leg! And if we don't even know if it's broken; that's what the hospitals for." I could hear the stress in Scott's voice. Awe man- I didn't think he was that affected by the Liam thing. Scott is always trying to do the right thing so I could see why he felt so bad about hurting Liam. Maybe I was wrong to make it about me.
"Scott!" We all turned to see Kira coming towards us, looking peppy about something. Stiles grabbed me by my arm and started dragging me into the nurses office. I didn't protest but I was very confused.
"Just leave them- I'll tell you later. Help me get this kid in the car." My brother pushed me forward gently and into the room where Liam lay with a stone cold face on. I felt kind of bad for him. He didn't even know what he was really going up against either.
"Let's go, kid," Stiles ordered him, sounding unbothered and annoyed. He really hated him. I think Liam is lucky Stiles didn't beat him up when he was in eigth grade, and we were in sixth…but now Stiles was lucky that Liam had a broken ankle and couldn't beat him up.
"Stiles!" I rolled my eyes and actually went to Liam's side. He looked up at me, his eyes suddenly getting a little softer as we stared at each other. It felt…wierd. Still, I put his arm around my shoulder and tried to help him up all on my own. He grunted in pain but kept himself a little balanced. My brother sighed at the sight of us and decided to come help. Thank God he wasn't being such a hard ass.
We stood silent as Stiles and I helped a limping Liam to the blue jeep, and then lifted his heavy body into the back. I definitely wanted nothing to do with that awkward car ride! Stiles was so annoyed he had to help and Liam was pissed he was in that situation- it was seriously radiating off of them both. Scott, though? Was like on cloud nine for some reason. Too much weird energy- I was cool with the bus.
At least I had Malia to sort of keep me company. Teaching her social norms and also a ton of math was like the only thing we bonded over because she was nowhere close to being a normal teen. Not that I expected my brother to ever pull a normal girl or that I expected her to act like one after living in the woods for the majority of her life at this point. Malia was also a psycho's daughter- so.
"B, please tell me you understand this. I'd rather have you write me notes than Lydia- if this is how complicated she was going to make them." Malia said from the doorway that connected my room to the bathroom I shared with my brother. She was holding a slip of paper torn from a notebook. Just from the back I could see it was filled to the brim with writing.
"Let me see," I said, beckoning her to come closer. She walked into the room and held the paper out to me. Lydia was super smart but she was also super supernatural so who know's how fucked this could be. I took the paper from Malia, giving it a once over.
What the fuck? Lliterally a bunch of characters filled the brim of the page like it was some code. I looked up at Malia who literally looked clueless. "Lydia wrote this? Is there more?"
"Like three pages. You know what it means?"
"No… Give me the rest." Malia followed what I said and went back through the bathroom into Stiles' room. She literally lived here so I guess it was her room, too. She came back a second later with a couple more papers and handed them to me.
I tried to piece them together but I couldn't tell where the code stopped or ended. It sure was fascinating, though. Malia sighed from the doorway. I turned my attention back to where she stood looking frustrated as ever. "What's wrong?"
"How does everyone get math and school but I don't?"
I thought carefully before I spoke, "Malia, you do realize we had plenty of practice and experience to learn these things? Give yourself some time. Plus you have me right next door- whenever you need help you already know to come knocking…. Well barging in but that's just another thing to work on." I tried to give her a reassuring smile but she didn't change her frown.
"It's kind of embarrassing. It makes me feel bad. I don't want to be the only one who doesn't know anything."
"You have to just think about how you know a lot of stuff that no one else does. What are we really going to use math for, anyway?" I tried to think of something that would appeal to Malia specifically. "Plus, it's not like anyone can make fun of you- just beat them up."
That made her smile. She raised her eyes to the sky like she was imagining that exact situation and then nodded. "True."
We stood there, smiling at each other until a loud crash from downstairs alerted both of us. I flashed an alarmed look at her but she seemed calm. She sniffed the air, "It's Stiles."
I shoved the papers under my pillow- I was serious about not letting them get involved in anything otherworldly! The rushed sound of someone stomping up the stairs confirmed what Malia had said and seconds later Stiles slid around the corner to the doorway of my bedroom.
"I'm just going to say it for you," He said to me in a rushed tone. Struggling to catch his breath. I cocked my head in confusion. The fuck is he talking about? As if he read my mind, he continued, "Scott… bit Liam."
