#043: Oddish

Oddish are nocturnal in the wild and prefer to dwell in damp, boggy conditions, but they are not as vulnerable to sunlight and high temperatures as their behaviour might suggest. They bury themselves in soil and sleep during the day, not to shelter underground from the sun's rays, but to avoid diurnal flying-type predators like Pidgeotto. Where Hoothoot roam, the Oddish sleep at night, just as domesticated Oddish do.

They may not be harmed by sunlight per se, but Oddish are not unaffected by this change to their lifestyle that comes with living with trainers (or Hoothoot for that matter). They are known to be particularly lively and excitable pokemon, but this is a quirk of daytime living, rather than their natural disposition. In order to photosynthesise moonlight, an Oddish's leaves have to be particularly receptive to the faintest glimmer of light. Prolonged exposure to sunlight is therefore a giddying banquet, one most Oddish respond to, at least until they grow accustomed to it, like a child on a sugar high.

Captured Oddish need plenty of exercise to help them burn off this extra energy and remain a healthy weight. For them, a treadmill provides a better defence on a hot summer's day than slapping on sun cream.
