So, I lost motivation for a long while… my bad… Anyways… thought I would write a chapter today so here we go.
"Alright everyone. Line up!" were the first words shouted by Coach Hopper.
Confused, Mahdi approached Coach but was ignored, so he lined up next to Brain.
"Now, an important decision must be made today concerning our news member. Jackson stp forward." Coach ordered.
"I think I'll just stay here" was Percy's meek reply.
"I wasn't asking" Coach leveled Percy with glare.
Please, Percy thought I've seen worse than you. Before he could even glare back, Mahdi stepped forward.
"Look, Coach, everyone here is confused. Can you please explain what is going on?" Mahdi asked.
"You don't tell me what to do!" Hopper almost shouted, "Now get back in line."
Mahdi stepped back, slack jawed. Emmet patted Mahdi on the back while Brian motioned for him to close his mouth. Liam, as well as the rest of the team, were also watching the exchange with surprised expressions. Coach Hopper may have gotten frustrated with the team every once in a while, but he had never spoken like that to any member. With Mahdi being team captain and being shut down like that, no one else was willing to speak.
"I'm going to say this bluntly," Coach Hopper explained. "Yesterday after practice, I gave Percy the position of captain on the swim team."
All eyes turned to Percy, but he didn't return their looks. He couldn't bring himself to look at Mahdi, fearing the betrayed look he might have in his eyes. Instead he made direct eye contact with Coach Hopper and started to speak.
"First of all, you asked me if I wanted to be captain-"
"That's relevant, besides-" Hopper interrupted, but Percy was having none of that, he step forward and continued to speak.
"I was not done speaking. Now, you asked me a yes or no question yesterday and I specifically remember saying no."
"Well, I changed my mind, I'm the coach so I decide who is captain."
"I don't care if you're a Greek God, I told you no. Now you have to either respect my opinion and-"
"Don't you talk to me like that boy, I'M THE ADULT HERE." Spit was flying out of Coach Hopper's mouth as he shouted the last part. Percy was so happy to have the ability to control spit, and subtly moved the spit around himself.
"Then start acting like one." Percy replied calmly. Silence from everyone. The team had no idea what to do in this situation. Instead of intervening, they watched, curious to see how it would end.
Taking a deep breath to attempt to seem calmer, Coach Hopper thought of a response.
"I'm doing what's best for the team" he said, his face still slightly red with anger. "You are the best swimmer this team has ever had. You are team captain now whether you want it or not. Now, what will be your first act as captain?"
Percy could not believe this man. Does this man know the meaning of the word no? Seriously, I've met Gods less stubborn than Coach Hopper. He finally chanced a glance back to his team mates. He didn't focus too much on the people who he doesn't even know the names of. They were irrelevant and basically had the same expression of shock. His friends were the important faces that he felt like he needed to see. Emmet and Liam were looking back and forth between Percy and Mahdi. Their facial expressions were hard for Percy to read, considering that he has still only known them for about a week.
Brian had his full attention on Percy. Brian was thinking about what Percy would do. He has learned a lot about Percy this past week, and he definitely doesn't seem like the kind of person who would willingly hurt his friends. But Brian also couldn't see a way out of this situation so he was interested in how Percy would handle this.
Percy finally had the guts to look at Mahdi. Apparently, he had nothing to fear, because Percy didn't see betrayal in his eyes. The only thing Percy saw was curiosity. Percy smirked at Mahdi and turned back towards Coach Hopper. The boys saw Percy smirk, and knew that whatever Percy was about to say, Coach Hopper would not enjoy it.
"My first act as captain of the Goode High School Swim Team is to quit the team."
With that, Percy walked straight out of the building. No hesitation, even as he heard the gasps of his friends and the yells of Coach Hopper.
I would like to thank anyone who is reading this. I hope I can write again soon.
