Impatiently Mako looked at his watch for what felt like the hundredth time in the last ten minutes. Annoyed Kya sighed and took his hand in hers. "Mako calm down, I'm sure they're coming any moment", she tried to calm her husband. Mako looked down at her and forced a smile at her. "They should be here for ten minutes", he said sighing. Amused Kya shook her head, since Mako had taken over the post as chief of police two years ago he was very agog about punctuality not only in professional matters but also in personal once. "It just takes longer at the moment, don't forget", but that was as far as Kya got, then she heard already someone call their names and a little boy came running forwards them. Mako let go of Kya to catch his nephew. Opal and Bolin had married a year after the happenings with Aang and a year after that Shiro was born. "Hi buddy did you grow?" Mako asked laughing while he picked Shiro up. He only laughed and turned to Kya. "Hello aunt Kya", he said giggling. "Hello Shiro where is your mommy?" Kya asked smiling. "Shiro you can't just run away like this", she heard Opal scold. While Shiro buried his face quietly into Makos neck, he and Kya looked at Opal. She stood some meters away from them and shook her head. One hand she had on her back the other laid on her belly. In a few months she and Bolin would get their second child. Grinning Mako went to his sister in law and Kya followed her husband. "It's not so bad Opal he's just happy to see his favorite uncle", said Mako. Kya rolled her eyes, her husband adored this boy. "You're his only uncle here", Opal scoffed. Mako only laughed and went with Shiro in his arms in to the park. Kya and Opal exchanged a glance and followed Mako. While Mako frolicked with Shiro the two woman sat on a bench nearby. "Thanks for doing this Kya", Opal said and watched Shiro. "It's alright we like to have the little one around especially Mako. Besides Bolin is working so much lately, so we can support you a little." Opal sighed and laid her hand protective on her belly. "Yeah Bo does that so he can support me once the baby is here." Kya knew exactly what Opal meant, as Makos deputy Bolin had worked a lot of overtime through which her husband had been home more often. For a while none of the two women said something and simply watched Mako and Shiro. Just as Mako raised the boy above his head and turned around with him Opal asked something what irritated Kya. "Say Kya why don't you and Mako have kids of your own? Look at Mako he would be a great father." Kya sighed and looked at her hands, this discussion she had already had with Mako when Opal and Bolin had told them about the pregnancy. "Mako would be a fantastic father, there's no doubt about that and I would love to start a family with him but it's not possible." "And why not?" Opal wanted to know and looked strictly at Kya. Kya smiled sadly. "Opal I'm the avatar and Mako is the chief of police do you know how many enemies we have through this I don't wont to put an innocent child into danger." Opal blinked a few times then she started laughing. "Oh Kya you shouldn't worry about that." "Excuse me?" Kya asked and raised an eyebrow. "Honestly do you thinks somebody would be mad enough to go head-on-head with you, I don't think so. Besides this person wouldn't only have you and Mako at his throat but also your families and to be honest you have some pretty powerful benders in your families. Nothing would ever happen to a child of yours, just as nothing is ever going to happen to Shiro." Kya tilted her head, she had never thought about it like this. Again she looked to Mako, who gave Shiro a piggyback ride and couldn't stop imaging him with a little boy who looked exactly like him and this image made her smile.

Mako and Kya had spend the afternoon with Shiro and Opal in the park and returned now to their apartment. Exhausted Mako dropped head first on the sofa, while Kya closed the door behind her. "The boy has just too much energy", Mako mumbled into the pillow. "Then it's good we don't have kids", laughed Kya. "That would be something different", said Mako and sat up. "How so?" Kya wanted to know and sat on his lap. "Well our kids would drain the energy from their uncles and aunts not ours." Kya smiled and kissed Mako softly. "I've been thinking", Kya said as she let go of Mako. "What about?" he asked and kissed her neck. "What would you think about us having a child?" Immediately Mako let go of her neck and looked at Kya with big eyes. "Are you serious?" Kya nodded. "And where does this chance of mind come from?" Mako asked and raised his eyebrow. "Well", Kya said and stroked Makos arm, "Opal gave me a new point of view at the whole thing and you know that I would love to start a family with you." Mako smiled and pulled Kya closer. He couldn't wait to have his own little family.

Annoyed Kya stood in the kitchen and made herself some tea. Somehow everything was askew at the moment but Kya couldn't tell why. She just hopped that the next days she and Mako would spend in the fire nation would smooth things over. "Hello beautiful", said Mako and kissed her cheek. Kya turned away from him, right now she wasn't to found of him. "Kya what's wrong?" Mako asked right away. "Nothing just leave me alone", she snapped at him. "Kya", said Mako and took her hand. Kya tried to get free but Mako hold her tied. "What's wrong? Is it about the baby?" Mako wanted to know. For half a year they tried to get pregnant but it hadn't worked until now. Kya bit her lower lip and Mako saw how the first tears ran over her cheeks. Immediately he pulled her into a hug. "Hey it's alright", said Mako and stroked Kya's back soothingly. "I'm sorry", sobbed Kya. "What if we waited to long?" she asked and let go of Mako. "Then it's also alright, I still love you", said Mako and stroked Kya's cheek. She smiled softly and kissed Mako. Mako returned the kiss and quickly Kya kissed him more intensely, but Mako pushed her away softly. "Kya I have to go to work." Kya sighed and let go of Mako, he laughed softly and kissed her on the cheek as goodbye. Half an hour later Mako reached the station and dropped into his seat with a big sigh. He had no clue what was wrong with Kya but her mood swings would drive him crazy. "Well trouble in paradise?" Mako heard someone say, he turned around and grinned as he saw Bolin standing at the door. "It's good to see you Bo", Mako said and stood up to hug his brother. "Thanks for taking over here", Mako said as they sat on the couch in Makos office. "No big deal it's just for some days, but what's wrong you look stressed", Bolin acknowledged. Mako sighed and told his brother what was going on. Bolin smirked when Mako finished his story. "You will have to get used to it. Such mood swings are normal for pregnant woman." Mako blinked a few times and starred at Bolin, then he shook his head. "Kya isn't pregnant." Bolin raised an eyebrow. "Believe me I've been there twice, if it's true what you say then you will be three soon."

In the meantime Kya had gone to the airbender temple where she met her sister. The two spontaneously decided to train their firepower and now shoot fireballs and column at each other. Kya was mad but she had trouble to keep up with Korra and as she send a big firewall in her direction she realized with horror that she couldn't push it pack, so she bend a water fountain and drenched the wall and Korra with it. "Kya what's that?" Korra spluttered. "I don't know, I couldn't defend the fire wall and that's the only solution that came to my mind", Kya said and starred at her hands. "Are you alright?" Korra wanted to know and stood beside her sister. "I think so", said Kya and let a little flame dance over her palm. This was the second time in a short while she had lost control over her bending abilities. The strange thing was, that she never had trouble bending water. In the evening Kya and Mako laid together in bed. Kya lay halfway on top of Mako his right leg was between hers and he stroked her arm. "Could you talk with Bolin today?" Kya asked and looked up at Mako. "Yeah he will take care of everything while we're in the firenation", said Mako and grinned. "What's up?" Kya asked irritated. "Well Bo thinks that the reason for your mood changes is that you're pregnant." Kya puffed out air and rolled her eyes. "I would know if I was pregnant", she said pissed and turned away from Mako. He rolled his eyes and wished that he hadn't said anything.

On the next day Mako and Kya flew into the firenation to attend the coronation of Iroh which should take place the next day. Kya's brother awaited the two when they landed. "Iroh!" Kya called excited and hugged her brother fiercely. "I'm glad to see you too", he laughed. Kya let go of Iroh and brushed a strand of hair behind his ear. "I will never get used to this", Kya said and tilted her head. Iroh laughed and tied his hair, which now reached his shoulders, up. "Come mother and grandfather are waiting for you." Iroh guided the two through the palace until they reached a small room in which Izumi and Zuko sat and were drinking tea. Izumi greeted her daughter affectionate and Mako received a warm handshake from Zuko. "You look pale Kya", Zuko said as he looked at his granddaughter. Mako looked over at Kya and realized too that his wife looked sick. Kya shook her head and smiled weakly. "I think it's the heat here, I'm not used to it anymore." Mako wrapped an arm around Kya's waist and pulled her closer and kissed her temple. Kya smiled gratefully at him. They all sat down and drank tea and talked about the coronation. In the evening there was big feast, at which Kya ate quite generously. That's why Mako wasn't wondering when he found Kya the next morning in the bathroom where she was throwing up. The coronation was quite spectacular. A lot of important people had come to join and Mako had even got an old uniform from Zuko. After the coronation Mako and Kya spend some days in the fire nation and then returned to republic city.

For a few days they were back home and Mako woke through a wrenching sound from the bathroom. Sighing he stood up, went into the bathroom and knelt behind Kya and held her hair back and stroked her back calmingly. "Kya you should go see a healer, that's going on for far to long", Mako said softly. Kya laid back and wiped her mouth. "I'm going to be fine, don't worry", Kya said. "Are you sure?" Mako asked unsure. "Yeah will you help me?" Kya wanted to know and reached her hands out to him. Mako smiled and pulled Kya to her feet. Then they went into the kitchen where they ate breakfast. "I've got to go, are you sure you're going to be fine alone?" Kya smiled, Mako was just too worried about her. "Yeah just go", she said and kissed his cheek. Mako sighed, kissed his wife quickly, grabbed his jacket and left the apartment. Smirking Kya turned to the sink to wash the dishes. Doing so her gaze landed on the calendar she had put on the fridge. She frowned and flipped back. Her eyes got wide as she counted back. Forgetting the dishes, she took her things and left the apartment as well. As fast as she could Kya made her way to the air temple, as she arrived there she met Jinora. "Kya what are you doing here? Korra isn't in the city." "I knew, I actually wanted to see your mother", Kya said slightly out of breath. "Oh, she's in the kitchen", Jinora said surprised and watched Kya walking in this direction. As Kya entered the kitchen Pema turned to her and looked at her astonished. "Kya what a surprise what are you doing here?" she asked. Kya bit her lower lip, unsure if it really was a good idea, but Pema was the only one she could ask, so she took a deep breath to calm herself. "I wanted to ask you something", Kya said and looked bashful at Pema. The latter told her to continue with a wave of her hand. "Do you know something that helps with morning sickness?" Kya asked. Pema blinked a few times then smiled and said: "Take a seat in the dining room I'll be right there." Kya nodded and went to the adjoined room and sank on the floor. A few minutes later Pema entered with two cups and a pot of tea. "Here that should be relaxing", said Pema and poured Kya a cup. Grateful Kya took the cup and took a sip from it. "Hmm, what's that?" Kya asked and licked her lips. "An herbal mix Katara recommended to me when I was pregnant with Jinora. I can give you something of it." Kya felt that she was blushing and nodded. For a while none of the woman said something. "Does Mako already know?" Pema asked and took a sip from her tea. Kya shook her head. "No I just realized it myself", Kya admitted meekly. Pema raised her eyebrow and Kya told her that she was suffering from this sickness since they had been in the fire nation and had realized today that she didn't had her period and that had never happened before. Pema nodded understanding and said that the heat in the fire nation probably had messed with Kya's circulation and that's why she was suffering from sickness. The two woman talked for quite some time and Pema told Kya what was still to come. Finally Kya said her goodbye and made her way to the police station.

Mako's colleagues where quite surprised when Kya entered the station. It was rarely or never that the wife of their boss came here. Without paying them attention Kya went to Makos office door and opened it. Mako looked up from his desk as the door was opened without warning. "Kya what are you doing here?" he asked ignoring his two colleagues in front his desk. "I missed you", Kya said and smiled. Mako looked at her skeptical and turned to his colleagues. "That was it for today we'll see each other tomorrow", Mako passed the two of. They nodded curtly, stood up and disappeared from the office. Mako stood up too, took his jacket which hung at the hat stand behind him and then went to Kya and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. Smiling they left the station together. "So what's really up?" Mako wanted to know when they were a few feet from the station and let his arm drop from Kya's shoulder and instead took her hand in his. "I told you I missed you", Kya said and looked at Mako from the side. Mako sighed. "Kya we've been apart more often and for a longer time, so you're not missing me after just one day", he said and stopped. "Alright you're right", Kya said took two steps forward and then stopped in front of Mako. "So what's wrong?" Mako wanted to know. Kya grinned she wouldn't make it easy for him. "Well let's just say, that Bo was right." Mako crossed his arms in front his chest and raised an eyebrow. "And what was my dear brother right about?" "About the reason for my mood swings", Kya said with a shrug. Mako blinked and Kya could see how it started to work in her husband's head, then Mako dropped his arms and his eyes widened. "You're pregnant?" Mako couldn't believe it but Kya's wide grin and the nod confirmed what he had said. Quickly Mako was at Kya's side and picked her up and spun her around. "Mako!" she screeched half laughing. Mako put Kya back on her feet, took her face into his hands and kissed her. "That's great", he whispered. Kya smiled and put a hand on her belly. Yes it was really great.
