Hello everyone, my name is ThePurpleArcher24 and I have finally decided to upload the first chapter to this story. Now as you can see from the title I have changed my character's name to Finn Barrett instead of Seth Ambrose no reason just liked that name better anyways there are three reasons why I'm uploading this chapter early instead of waiting until after I finish the first five chapters and that is because of the following:
1. I wanted to prove that this wasn't going to be like the other stories I plan to do when I ask for OC's.
2. I still need OC's, I still need a Potions Teacher, Students that are boys and other Wizards and Witches.
3. I could really use some positive words right now as I have been feeling like crap the last few days.
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.
Chapter 1:
The Boy with Nothing
Finn stared out the dirty window of the room he shared with eight other boys at the orphanage. His long unkept scraggly dark hair reached down past his shoulders. His chocolate brown eyes darted back and forth as he watched the people walk past the building hoping that anyone of them would stop and walk inside and finally take him away from this horrid place, but that day never seems to arrive. The sound of stomping alerted him, making him turn his attention away from the window just in time to see the door being flung opened and four boys stepped inside. Finn couldn't remember three of their names but couldn't forget the name of their beloved leader and the reason for Finn's hated for the place. The boy's name was Broadus…. No wait, it was Brock or was it something else? Finn then realized that he couldn't remember the boy's name either, nor did he care to.
The four boys started making their way towards the small boy causing him tense up for the incoming daily beatdown from his tormentors. He clenched his eyes shut awaiting the blow that would knock him down to the ground, but he slowly opened his eyes when the blow never came. What he did see however, was the boys all lying on the ground and whimpering in pain.
"What da…" he started to say only to stop when he heard the sound of quickly stomping footsteps making their way up the stairs then a few moments later standing in the doorway was none other than the owner of the orphanage Miss Jax who looked down at the boys crying out in pain then up at Finn with her eyes narrowing in on him.
Finn's eyes widened in shock when he realized what it looked like.
"It's not what it looks like" he quickly pleaded but his pleading went unheard as Miss Jax walked over and grabbed him by his ear then pulled him out the room.
He continued to try and plead with the older woman, but she ignored him as she pulled him down the stairs by his ear. She brought him over to the door that lead down to the basement. She pulled the door open and shoved him inside luckily he was able to stop himself from falling down the rickety steps to the basement. He turned only for Miss Jax to slam the door in his face.
"You're not coming out until you think about what you've done" Miss Jax growled on the other side of the door.
Finn didn't understand, how could he think about what he had done when he didn't even know what he had done in the first place. He turned around and walked down a few steps before taking a seat. He brought his hands up and placed them on his knees before dropping his head into his hands. He could feel the anger building up inside of him. He hated the constant bullying from the other boys but the mistreatment he would get from the one person who was supposed to take care of him was far worse. Finn clenched his eyes shut and started muttering under his breath. He didn't know if anyone would actually hear him, but he did anyways. Suddenly the sound of clicking could be heard, he looked over his shoulder at the door swearing he heard the lock on the door moving so he got up to his feet.
He made his way up to the door then slowly reached his hand out to grab the door handle. He barely touched the knob when the door slowly opened on its own. He peered through the crack out into the hallway but saw no one on the other side of the door. 'How did that happen...' he thought to himself then suddenly the doorbell rang so he quickly shut the door so that Miss Jax wouldn't see him or that the door was open. He held the door shut and placed his ear to the door so he could try to hear everything.
"Ah, I didn't except to see you again so soon" came Miss Jax's voice.
Finn's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, who was she talking to? Did someone he hadn't seen before actually come to the orphanage to possibility adopt one of them? But he was stuck here so how could they meet him. He quickly pressed his ear against the door again to see if he could hear what the other person said. All he heard was murmurs but couldn't hear the person's voice when suddenly Miss Jax's sharp voice cut him from his thoughts.
"Fergal Barrett? There is no one here by that name I am sorry" Miss Jax said to the person.
Finn's eyes widened in shock, she was lying to someone who wanted to meet him.
"So, there is no one standing behind the basement door?" a woman's voice that was not Miss Jax asked.
Before Finn could do anything the door leading down to the basement swung open to reveal a woman with fiery orange hair standing in front of him. Finn stepped backwards. As he stepped backwards his foot slipped off the step making him start to fall backwards luckily for him the woman grabbed him by the front of his shirt stopping him from falling down the steps. The mysterious woman pulled him out and slammed the door shut before turning to face Miss Jax who was trying her best to hide her anger about being caught in a lie. She started to fidget with her clothes trying to smooth them out and stand taller, when the woman then proceeded to reach into her bag that was hanging on her shoulder and pulled out an envelope as she walked deliberately over to Miss Jax and handed it to her. Miss Jax took the envelope, ripped it open and pulled out the parchment that was inside.
Finn stood there looking from the mysterious woman back to Miss Jax who was reading over the parchment, the woman turned to face Finn then spoke.
"Do you have any belongings'?" she asked him with what he thought was an Irish accent.
Finn shook his head silently.
The woman nodded her head turned to face Miss Jax once more.
"I'll be takin' the lad now" she said curtly.
Miss Jax looked up from the parchment and nodded her head almost like she was in a trance. The woman placed her hand on Finn's shoulder then told him to quickly grab his things. When he came back, she led him down the hall going straight past Miss Jax and right out the front door. Finn didn't know what was happening but what he did know was that he was finally leaving that horrible place hoping that he would never have to come back ever again.
(!)
Finn looked at the place around him as he followed the woman down an unfamiliar street. Despite living in London for eleven years he had never stepped outside the orphanage as Miss Jax never allowed it. He looked in wonder at the people walking around him, but then he started realizing the looks they were giving him. It was the look of disgust because of how he looked and it made him feel quite uneasy. He looked down as he felt tears began to form in the corner of his eyes but suddenly he felt the woman's hand on his shoulder making him look up at her, tears still forming in his eyes.
"It's alright laddy, no one can tell you what you can and can't do. Only you can do what's the best for you" the woman said then led Finn down to a small barber shop.
The two entered the shop and Finn instantly noticed something different about the place. It was just a weird feeling he was getting from the place. The orange haired woman led Finn up to the counter where a man was waiting to greet them. "Ello Sheamus, how is business?" she asked the man who smiled at her.
"Buisness is doin' great lass" Sheamus replied before looking down at Finn. "Who's the lad?" he asked with a raised eyebrow.
The woman nudged Finn with her elbow.
"My name is Finn, sir" Finn said as he moved some of his hair out from his eyesight so he could get a better look at the man in front of him.
"Sweet baby Jesus, boyo, you look like you haven't washed yer hair in days" Sheamus said when he got a better look at Finn's hair, then before Finn could say anything Sheamus ushered Finn around the counter then led to him to the back of the shop to a chair that was sitting in front of sink. "Hop up there and we'll get to work" Sheamus said before walking off to get some items.
Finn hopped up onto the chair then looked up just as the Sheamus came back carrying to two bottles and a black towel. Sheamus placed his hand on Finn's shoulder then proceeded to push the chair backwards so Finn's neck rested on the sink. He turned the water on to the right temperature then after a few seconds he started to wash Finn's hair. With how unkept Finn's hair was, the washing took longer than it would normally take but everything felt so welcoming the moment he stepped inside this place. He felt at ease, like all the weight and tenseness had been lifted. It felt like only seconds before Sheamus lifted the chair back up to normal then started lightly drying Finn's hair. When he was done, Finn got down from the chair and followed Sheamus back into the main room. He took a seat in another chair that was in front of a mirror.
"So fella, what kind of haircut would ya like?" Sheamus asked him with a warm smile.
It was very weird. Finn was having a hard time understanding why two people whom he had never met before would be treating him with such kindness. A level of kindness that was never shown to him by Miss Jax or the other boys at the orphanage. Finn realized that Sheamus was still waiting for his answer, so he looked up at the Irishman and spoke.
"Um… short, mostly buzzed on the sides" Finn replied.
Sheamus smiled.
"One Sheamus special coming up" Sheamus replied as he picked up a razor.
Finn stared at himself in the mirror as Sheamus got to work on his hair. He watched as the man moved around him with grace as if he was a wizard or something. The buzzing sound of Sheamus' razor occupied Finn's mind keeping him almost in a trance like state which was broken when Sheamus patted him on the shoulder. The young Barrett looked at his reflection in the mirror and was taken aback at what he saw. At first he didn't recognize the person staring back at him. For the first time in a quite a few years, Finn was staring at his own unhidden face. He could see the dark circles around his eyes from the lack of sleep he had from living at the orphanage. He also saw the slight scar above his right eye from when he was struck in the face by Miss Jax when he accidently broke a plate in the kitchen. Finn hopped down from the barber chair then followed Sheamus to the front where the orange haired woman was waiting for them.
"Lookin' good boyo" the woman said with a smile before turning to face Sheamus, "What do I owe ya?" she asked him.
"On the house" he replied with a smile waving her off.
The woman shook her head then motioned for Finn to follow her. The moment Finn walked out of the shop, he could feel the wind graze against the side of his head, it was a welcoming feel that he could get use to. He looked up to see the orange haired woman standing beside him. She offered him a smile just as a cab pulled up in front of them. The woman opened the back door and Finn got inside making sure to slide all the way over to the other side of the cab allowing her to get in.
The driver of the cab asked where they were going, and the woman responded with an address, but Finn was too busy looking out the window to listen to her. When the cab started moving he turned his attention to the woman but when she looked over at him he quickly looked away.
"Something to ask young Barrett?" she asked.
Finn turned to look at her.
"Why me?" he asked.
"Why you what?" she responded.
"Why did you take me from the orphanage?" he asked to which she responded,
"My reasoning cannot be told at this time, but I promise when the time is right I will tell you anything you wish to know."
Finn looked down in disappointment at not getting an answer.
"Can I ask you something else?" he asked hesitantly.
"Yes" she responded.
"Are you going to send me back to the orphanage?" he asked her.
She responded,
"Never."
A smile crossed Finn's lips despite not knowing the woman's reasoning to why she took him away from the orphanage. Maybe things would start looking up for the eleven-year-old. He lifted his head looked out the window just as the cab pulled up in front of a pub. They both got out of the cab and watched the cab drive off before turning to face the pub.
"Where are we?" he asked.
"Finn Barrett, welcome to The Leaky Cauldron." She said with a smile.
