Hello Everyone! This is my first fanfic and I would appreciate any kind of feedback! Obviously I don't own Harry Potter or anything that belongs to JK Rowling. Ophelia Lupin is my own character.
I have written Ophelia as the daughter of Remus Lupin and Marlene McKinnon. After the deaths of Remus and Tonks, Ophelia raised her younger brother Teddy with the help of Harry Potter and Andromeda Tonks.
Ophelia is the same age as Harry, Ron, and Hermione and a Gryffindor. This is a Fred Weasley/OC story.
George Weasley and Angelina Johnson are married and Percy Weasley is the one who died at the battle in Hogwarts.
Enjoy!
The Magpie and the Fox
Introduction
Ophelia walked briskly beside Mrs. Sharpe, the Chief Healer of St Mungo's Hospital. Mrs. Sharpe was a no-nonsense sort of woman with tired eyes and stern expression and dressed in a grey skirt and jacket with salt and pepper hair pulled into a tight bun. Ophelia took note of the way that the medi-witches they passed in the hall quickly snapped their eyes down into patient files when they walked by. Mrs. Sharpe clearly had a strict reputation for cracking down on those who liked to slack off at work.
"You and Healer Doss are in charge on this floor. All medi-witches and medi-wizards will answer to the both of you and you will be required to sign off on the care of all patients on this floor at the end of every shift and provide the healer on duty over night with all pertinent patient care details."
Mrs. Sharpe stopped in front of a door at the end of the hallway, the door opened with the swish of her hand, and she ushered Ophelia inside. It was an office, brightly lit with large windows, a desk and a couple of cushioned chairs, and an empty bookcase.
"Have you any questions Ms. Lupin?"
"No Ma'am."
"Good. I've read a few of the papers you published in New York. Why did you choose to focus so much of your work on Lycanthropy, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Not at all. My father was a werewolf. He was bitten as a boy. I guess you could say I had a personal and professional interest."
Mrs. Sharpe's expression softened slightly, "I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you will consider continuing your writing while you are here. We have resources you didn't have access to in New York and I'm sure there will be many a patient that will benefit from your knowledge and your skill."
"Yes Ma'am. Were there any questions you had for me?"
Mrs. Sharpe sat down in one of the cushioned chairs and motioned for Ophelia to sit as well. "I know who you are Ms. Lupin. I know you fought alongside Harry Potter in defeat of the Dark Lord. I know that there are people in this building who see you as a war hero and role model because you are…But I can't help but wonder if these things have major ramifications on the professional relationships you will need to develop while working here. Not to mention the scrutiny you and this establishment will be under once the press finds out you will be working here. I don't want the reputation of this hospital to be drug through the mud on the front page of the Daily Prophet."
"I understand completely Mrs. Sharpe and I want to assure you that I am committed to this hospital and to my job as a healer. I am not looking for favoritism nor do I feel entitled to anything. I'm here to do my job and I have no desire for a life in the public spotlight and I have done a pretty decent job in New York of avoiding front page news." Ophelia tucked her blond hair behind her ear and looked at Mrs. Sharpe expectantly.
Mrs. Sharpe gave a curt nod, "Thank you Ms. Lupin. This office is yours if want it, as is the position of Healer."
Ophelia smiled and nodded, "Yes Ma'am, Thank you for this opportunity."
"Excellent. I'll have you start bright and early on Monday. Welcome to St Mungo's Ms. Lupin" she held out her hand for Ophelia to shake before making a quick exit.
Ophelia looked around at the office. In New York, the hospital was so crowded nobody really had an office except for the Chief. She let out a deep breath as she made her way towards one of the windows and looked out at the view overlooking the shops in Diagon Alley.
'Bullocks! I'm late!' she looked down at her wristwatch before grabbing her purse tightly and apparated away.
Ophelia straightened her blouse and fixed her hair as she entered Flourish and Blotts bookstore. The thin man behind the counter looked up, his eyes widening slightly as he appeared to recognize her.
"Hello. I'm sorry I'm late. Is the flat still available upstairs?" she asked him quickly.
He nodded as his mouth hung open as if he wanted to say something, but the words just wouldn't come out. He came out from behind the counter with a key in his hand and pointed to the staircase hidden to the side of the store.
"Is it okay if I take a look inside?" Ophelia asked.
"Of course. I'm manager and the landlord- Roger Cairns is my name." he told her, his voice a bit shaky.
Ophelia unlocked the door to the flat and looked around. It was small but spacious enough with two bedrooms for her and Teddy until she had the time to look for something more permanent in a quieter neighborhood.
She closed the door and turned to Mr. Cairns, "I would like to take it. Would I be able to move in tomorrow morning?"
Mr. Cairns nodded, "I have the contract behind the counter. You get the keys when it's signed."
Ophelia wasted no time and signed the paper, collected her keys and bid Mr. Cairns a good night before apparating once more.
It was dark when Ophelia appeared in front of a nice two-level home with a big yard. She could already smell the heavenly roast beef dinner Ginny was preparing when she walked into the house while Harry sat on the floor playing with a hyper and wiry Teddy Lupin and a drooling James Potter. Ophelia had been staying with Harry and Ginny for a couple of days while she was in London. She hadn't told them she was interviewing for a job and moving home permanently just in case things didn't work out, at least she wouldn't have gotten their hopes up. Ophelia said hello to Ginny and then went into the living room and scooped Teddy up, kissing his cheeks. The toddler's blue hair tuned bright pink as he giggled.
"There you are, we were starting to worry" Harry said as he cleaned the drool off James' face.
"Sorry. That's actually what I wanted to talk to both of you about." Ophelia said. A very pregnant Ginny made her way into the room and sat down next to Harry on the sofa. "The reason I'm in London is because I had a job interview today at St Mungos. They offered me a position as a Head Healer, and I've accepted it and I start Monday. And tomorrow Teddy and I are going to move into a flat just above Flourish and Blotts."
Harry and Ginny's faces lit up with excitement. "Brilliant! That's amazing Fee!" Ginny pulled her into a hug.
"So, this means we're going to get to see you all the time, right?" Harry grinned as he hugged her tight.
"You're going to see me so much; you'll be sick of me" Ophelia chuckled.
Harry shook his head, "That would never happen. I'm so happy for you Ophelia."
Ophelia grinned, "Thanks Harry"
"Merlin! You've got to come to mum and dad's anniversary party tomorrow night. Everyone will be thrilled to hear you're finally coming home!" Ginny said excitedly as she hurried into the kitchen to finish with supper while making lists of things to do now that Ophelia was here to stay.
"I'd love to. I missed the Weasley family gatherings while I was in New York."
Ophelia suddenly felt that warm sensation in the pit of her stomach. The one that she used to get when she was a kid surrounded by the kindest people she'd ever met. It was a sense of belonging. It felt like she was finally home.
