Before you start reading, we should really take a little time to talk about what this is, and what this is not. I'd rather set clear expectations, so you know what you're in for if you decide to start investing time and feelings into reading this fanfic.

First of all, this work is loosely tied to Something End, Something Begin (SESB). However, you do not need to have read SESB in part or in its entirety to read and appreciate The Fūinjutsu Mishap (which we'll start calling TFM for convenience). You could read one and not the other and understand everything. Also, TFM is spoiler-free for SESB readers: the event that ties both stories together hasn't been translated in SESB yet, so I'm keeping it a mystery in TFM. That way, you can read both stories and appreciate them fully, without fear of spoilers.

My second point is probably the most contentious, so bear with me here. TFM is not canon-compliant. The reason why is that I don't find the canon to make sense a lot of times and decided to do my own thing with it, just like I did in SESB. Because of that, and because the stories are loosely tied together, things established in SESB will make their comeback in TFM, like the Fūinjutsu rules, for example. I will not follow the canon ages for certain characters, will show no respect to the Elders, will toy with canon like a three years old with construction blocks. With any luck, this story will end up being another beloved piece of art. I certainly see it as such already.

Now to my third point. SESB readers will be reminded of some things while reading this. Mizumi and Hitomi are similar in more than one way. This, however, is not a self-insert, nor is it a reincarnation fanfic in the classical sense of the word. It is still very much a fix-it, and will explore a lot of areas that the canon kept in the dark or forgot about. All in all, I hope you like it and enjoy it.

Also, and as an endnote, this story will be updated once a week-ish. I have a wonderful editor working on it with me. We established a backlog of chapters before publication started so we'd both be more comfortable with keeping that pace of one chapter per week. We hope you like it and, if you do, please drop a little comment in the comment section, or a review, depending on which website you read this on. Enjoy!
