The Informer
First chapter
" Fear both the heat and the cold of your heart, and try to have patience, if you can"
If you had to describe someone you would generally start with the physical aspect of the person before to add a few adjectives like "he's nice" or "she's funny". As always, people had decided that it would become a standard now, when asked the question they would looked for a detailed on the hair color, tall or short, fat or skinny and then, only then, a little preview on their character. People are often taken aback when they had been given a description out of the standard society had agreed on. The brain is more capable to picture someone fully with a visual, and not words that can not be shaped and understood. So, when they had asked "what is she like?" They hadn't expected to received so little detail and a few words from their captain. If they remembered correctly, the exact sentence had been : "she'd punched me once but I punched her back."
They had known their captain for three or four years now, and not once, he had talked so little about someone. He who was always bouncing and talking, had surprised everyone when he had became serious for a moment before to change the subject asking for more food to the cook. Later that same night, the crew had gathered without their captain, trying to understand who they were trying to find. All they knew was that she and their captain knew each other somehow, that she was sailing alone, and that she had information about important people. That was it. Now, they could add that she and their captain fought. They didn't know how they could possibly know each other, was it someone for his childhood ? God knows how secretive the young captain could be about his life before to go at see. They had lost count how many time they have met with a family member or an old friends of his, they were even surprised to not have run into another brother or sister of his, they could be ten they wouldn't even know. The firstmate wasn't even surprised anymore, he knew it would be no point asking and if is captain didn't talk about it then it mustn't be relevant to them. Yet, the navigator had asked a few times, trying to figure out the young man but he had always talked about the same things before to cut the conversation short. But this time, no one really knew if it was a good thing or bad thing. That girl they were looking for could be something bad for the crew or even an enemy.
They were in this mess because of the other captain they met on that cursed island. Once again, their captain being their captain, had agreed for this "alliance" without any hesitation considering this as a new friendship. The surgeon wasn't a bad person, he seemed honest even though he was creepy. Once they had sailed away, he had explained them what their alliance was about, of course half of the crew hadn't listened but the plan was known for most : got to the island, blew up the factory and get the hell out of the island before the big bad guy caught them, if he didn't caught them before. Then, when everyone had been fired up to go destroy some building and overthrown some guy, he had explained that they needed to find someone before. That is when their captain had started to listen. They needed her for the plan, she had crucial information for their plan to work. Everyone had noticed how the captain wasn't keen about the idea of her but had asked to change course anyway. When the navigator had asked about the direction she had been surprised to be handed a piece of paper, the surgeon hadn't responded as to why he had that piece of ppaper to begin with. That same night, he had joined the crew on deck, knowing that they would have some questions and he rather answered them without the bouncing captain around.
"Why do we need her exactly?" Had asked Usopp, tense about the situation.
"She has in her possession some information. Information that we need in order to succeed the plan we established. Without those information on the country and the people that runs it, it would be best to get kill immediately."
"What is that information we need?" Asked the firstmate.
"Are you dumb? We wouldn't need her if he knew you idiot twat." Said the cook lighting his fourth cigarette of the evening.
"What did you say you pervert?!" Responded the first mate, a hand on his sword, ready to cut his crew mate in half.
"Guys, it not the time." Said the navigator sharply to them before to turn to the surgeon. "Why did you have her vivecard with you? Do you know each other?"
"I saved her life once, she gave it to me as a thank you."
"Do you know how her and the captain know each other?" Asked the archeologists rather interested in their relation.
"I do."
"So they really fought each other?" Asked the doctor of the ship.
"I don't know if you can qualified it as a fight properly speaking but, yes, they have exchanged some punches."
"So, she's an enemy." Affirmed the firstmate.
"I don't think so." Responded the surgeon.
"He's right. He would have never agreed to this if they were enemy of any sort."
"Who the hell is she anyway?"
"She's…interesting."
"Interesting? What kind of answer is that!" Yelled the long nose guy.
"Look, I don't know much either, only a few rumors here and there."
"But you met her right?" Asked the cook.
"Indeed. But it wasn't really the best time to exchange about ourself."
"Can she be trusted?" The surgeon hadn't responded immediately, visibly thinking about the answer. Truth be told, he didn't know. The only time he had met her she wasn't conscious and badly injured. On the two weeks he had spend with her, she had been awake for just one and spend all her time by herself, only communicating during the checkups she had with the surgeon. He had only saw her outside the medical room twice. One during the night, she was looking at the sky as if she was talking to the stars, the other time was when she had punched the bouncing captain totally out of the blue. He could still remembered the look on her face after he had landed a few feet away, despair and rage. He also remembered her smiling after she had received the punch back.
"I don't know." He said before to stand up. "I take the night watch, goodnight."
After a week following the direction of her card, which changed a few time, the ship had finally anchored next to a small island. A forest could be seen, it covered half of the island before to end at the foot of a mountain. If the girl they were looking for was there, she might be hiding in the forest but, before anyone could decided how to act, they all saw someone walking toward the shore. They stayed a long time watching the person before to notice it was waiting for them. The surgeon said that he would go talk to her alone, a few protested but he was already on the shore, letting a few rock behind him where he stood on the deck. The sowrdsman noticed how strangely quiet his captain was, normally he would have already launched himself on the island. Now, he was sat against the mast, his straw hat low on his eyes as if he was sleeping. On the shore the young woman who had been waiting had started to sharped her knife, patiently, not even bothered by the man apparition near her. She didn't say a word, knowing that he would do the talking. Yet, he didn't.
"What do you want?"
"I know you have some information." She smirked, deep down she knew why he had came. It had been silly of her to think that it was just a courtoisie meeting, after two years it was unlikely for him to meet a former patient. She put her knife back into her boot before to look at the ship at shore. She had never saw it before but she would recognize the Jolly Roger anywhere.
"From all the crew in the sea, you had to pick this one." She sighted before to stand up, finally facing him. He had changed a bit and seemed more tired but who was she to judge. She had met him once after all. "How is he?" She asked him, her head pointing at the ship. "Still acting like a fucking child?"
"Why do you care?" He asked back.
"I don't. It will be preferable for everyone that we stay away from each other."
"Still mad I see." He joked sightly. She staired at him for a while, remembering that he had been the one fixing her wound after being hit by the young captain. She turned again to the ship, her eyes fixing the sail with the horrible design on it. They both stayed in silence for a moment. If the wind had been blowing in their direction they could have heard the crew yelling at each other, debating if the needed to join the surgeon or not. The navigator had tried to make swordsman and the cook follow him, but, one had sat down, ready to take a nap while the other had just lit his cigarette, telling her that he would rather make her a cup of tea. As always, she had yelled at them, hitting them behind the head. The doctor had been trying to stop her, fearing some trauma for the two men. Meanwhile, on the shore, the young woman had sight again before to angrily respond to the surgeon.
"Tell me what you want, I have things to do." He glanced at her before to explain their plan of action. He didn't even had the time to ask her about the information they needed, that she had stopped him, punching in his stomach. He had flown away before to crash into trees. She still had her fist in place, ready to hit him again if he dare to respond.
"Why everyone decided to fight bigger threat!" She yelled at him, watching him walk back to her dusting himself, visibly more bother by the dust than the hit itself. If it hadn't been for her, she would already be dead, yet, he knew better. They needed her as an ally.
"We will do it, if you want us to survive you have to give us the information I asked for." He replied almost threatening, his right hand ready to take his sword out.
"I don't care if…"She had started to say before to pause herself. He watched her debate with herself, annoy by the situation. Then, she sight for the fourth time in a few minute. "Let me think this through for a few hours. I'll met you after with the information if I've decided to help you or not." She said before to walk away without waiting for his response.
When he got back on the deck, he was astonished to see the crew arguing, ready to tear each other throats, while the only calm person was, for once, the captain. He sat beside him, knowing that despite his hat on his eyes, he was awake. The surgeon knew the captain enough to know that calm wasn't something he did frequently.
"She'll give us the information." He simply said after a while. He waited for the bouncing captain to slightly nod ready to add somethings else, the other captain put a finger under his hat only to let show one of his eyes, showing that, despite everything, he took the situation rather seriously.
"We really need her?" He asked in a low voice.
"We do." The surgeon respond, knowing how he felt about her. He saw him frown.
"Alright." He said before to let his hat fall down again, putting the discussion to an end.
A few hours later, the girl had stepped onto the boat, a bag on her shoulder and a gun attached to her hip. Everyone was out on the deck, it was almost time for diner and they had started to gathered all together to drink a bit before. Once she had put her feet on the ground they were all ready to fight if needed be. She dropped her bag at her feet, the sound it made once it touched the ground clearly prove that she had weapon in it. Then, without a word, she started to scan the people around her: 2 girls, 2 crew mates, 1 pet, 1 robot, 1 corps, 1 man goat, 1 deadly surgeon/captain and 1 captain wearing a stupid strawhat. A strawhat she would have loved to never see again.
"I have decided to help you." She finally said. "I also need a ride. So, I'm going to give you the information you need for your suicide plan and, you will drop me somewhere." She continued to say. "The deal is: I tell you what you want to know once we arrived at my destination, not before. Let say that is my guarantee." She claimed, looking at the surgeon particularly. She was ready to cooperate, it wasn't that big of a deal and she wouldn't even been in the mess they would create in the first place. They could all die she couldn't care less to be honest. Yet, she had some important people to see and her stop was on their way. She saw this has an advantaged. Yes, she loved sailing alone but, her ship couldn't be used anymore. She had a unfortunate meeting with the marine a few days ago and had to abandon her precious and only companion. To be fair, their arriving couldn't be more welcomed.
"And what about our guarantee? You could give us some shit and use us." Asked the navigator. If anyone asked to talk to their captain about business they would be surprised to know that every deal or bargain was directly manage by the navigator. Except for this stupid alliance with the surgeon, she hadn't been able to do anything. At her words, the young woman at put her gaze on the ginger girl, studying her for head to toe, it took a few minute but, everyone could see that being asked the question had displeased her.
"The information that I give are always accurate. It's not good for business otherwise honey" she responded, bitter.
"Well, we need something from you and words aren't going to do it...honey" The navigator reply angsty. The girl then smirked, enjoying the reaction from the navigator.
"Everything I've ever own is in this bag." She said before kick it toward the girl. "You can look for treasure or gold but, despite old books some clothes, you would find nothing."
"We can't ask a pretty lady to give us something else than her heart!" Suddenly yelled the cook, kneeling before the girl, heart in his eyes. The woman only looked down, surprised.
"She could show us her panties?" Asked the corps musicians already taking clothes out of the bag. The navigator hit him hard on the head.
"You perverts!" She yelled at the two who stepped back, annoyed.
"She's going to pay us for the entire stay with us." Said the navigator taking out of the bag a little bag full of money. "Then, I'll gave her back 10%." Said the navigator while the cook and the swordsman were arguing near by. The young woman eyed the navigator holding the saving she had put together to buy herself a new boat. Then, she eyed the two captains, who were watching from afar since she arrived without saying a words, nodded to each other. The surgeon then spoke up:
"You will give us the information on our way to your destination." He said to her.
"So you can screw me over." She replied immediately, walking to the navigator. "It doesn't work like that dear. I'll give it when I'll see my destination, not before. If you don't agree, I'll go and find another way." She said picking up her bag before to put a hand on her money. The navigator didn't let her take it back. The young woman eyes darken, ready to hurt the girl if she didn't let go of her money soon. Then, the strawhat stood up. He put back his hat on his head correctly, and walked to the two girls, only stopping before them. He put an hand on his navigator shoulder telling her to let go. The young woman put her money where it belong in her bag before to turn to the captain of the ship. He was exactly as she remembered, yet, something was attracting her eyes. She hadn't hold back herself and was now staring at the captain chest, the scar was clearly showing how terrible the injury had been and that he had barely survived. She had been there when he had been treated. She had thought that, with time, the redness would disappeared but, once again, she had been a fool to think that scar could disappeared.
"We'll take her heart." The captain had declared, not noticing the stare on him. At this word, only the cook yelled of joy. Despite the complaints of his crew, he finally looked at the woman in front of him in the eyes for the first time in two years. "You will give us the information once we arrived at your destination." More complaints from his crew, swearing at him that it wasn't how you bargained with people, especially the navigator who was still standing beside him. Neither the captain or the woman were listening to any of the complain, to focus on their interaction. "In exchange…"He turned to the surgeon sat quietly behind, still press against the mast,. "He will take your heart." The crew then yelled again but from surprise, while the surgeon smirked. "I'll give it back once you are on the shore and have gave us the information." He said, locking his eyes in hers. She didn't responded at first, beginning a stare contest with the young captain. The last time she had saw him she had wanted to kill him more than anything, but she had only punched him. It had been a very satisfying thing to do, but only for a few seconds. The minutes that followed hadn't been as good as she had imagine, the following weeks and months either.
"I agree." She finally responded.
"You can stay with the girls if you want, or sleep on the deck I don't care." He said, lowing his hat once again on his eyes. "If I hear you say something or hurt my crew…" He began, his crew stopped yelling, knowing that their captain as, for the first time, being very serious about the whole situation. "I will make you regret it." The young woman then smirked a little.
"Don't worry. Why would I misbehave with some pirates like yourself. There is no point." She responded, putting her bag on her shoulder, ready to take a tour of the ship to find a place to settle herself. Yet, he had put on hand on her arm, preventing her to leave.
"If you ever cross us, I won't mind taking you down for good this time." She looked at his hand on her arm for a moment before to look at him, then at his scar. She was ready to reply something that would hurt him more than anything else but, she knew that it would be just by provocation. The air around them was already tense, she had noticed how he was stronger than before. She was tempted by kicking his ass once more, but, this wasn't the time.
"Why would I fight a crybaby like yourself. I'm done playing with kids." She said, putting his hand of off her. "I'll settle on the deck and won't bother anyone during my stay. You won't even notice my presence." And with that, she walked away.
No one had really seen her for the first few days. She had hanged her hammock in the back of the ship, near the library, and she had stayed there, writing things in a notebook, or calling people. She had put a map out of her bag once, making wonder the navigator what she was doing. Only three people had talked to her outside of the surgeon: the doctor, who had asked her if he could examinate her after noticing a few scars on her face. She had let him, explaining what had happened with the marine. She had found him lovely despite his constant fear and strange way of taking compliment. Then, it had been the cook who had exchange a few word with her. The first night she hadn't eat, so, the cook being the cook, he had came with a full meal and coffee for her the next morning, telling her that he refused to let someone skipped a meal. She had thanked him and had joined them for diner the next night, but, feeling the tense air between her and their captain, he told her that he would bring her food for now one, thing that she had agreed on. To finish, she had talked with the archaeologist one night. The two women shared the same love about books after all, so, naturally, they had spend one night sharing their passion with one another. Everyone had silently agree to keep their captain and the woman out of sight from each other, even though she could still hear him laughed and yelled, it was for the best. One day, she had come up to the navigator and gave her the location of the island she needed to be. The girl had barely respond. The swordsman, who was napping near by, had opened his eye, ready to stop a fight if needed be. The two women had exchange ten words and went on different ways. He saw the young woman sight before to join the surgeon on the green grass. He didn't trust either of them, and knowing that they were on speaking terms didn't glad him the slightess. So, its with his ears open that he closed his eye again.
"So, how do they treat you?" Asked the surgeon.
"Why do you even care? I'm pretty sure if they decided to attack me you would only stopped them because you need me." She said, sitting next to him, her eyes posing on their prisoner. "Who is he again?" She said pointing at him.
"That is none of your business Miss Kate." He simply answered. "And you are right. I'll only stopped them because you are needed for the time being."
"How honest of you." She responded smiling a bit.
"Well, if I have to be honest, it will be a shame if they came to tear apart my masterpiece." He said, eyeing her. He saw her froze for a split second.
"A shame it is." She added.
"How's your arm?"
"Better. It hurt from time to time but I can't complain." She said.
"Did you respect my…"
"We both know the respond to that question."
"You need to take care of yourself Miss Kate, I can't grow back arm from scratch like that every time. You have been lucky." He seriously said to her. She didn't responded immediately, still looking a the man goat thing in front of her.
"I have been lucky." She repeated almost to herself.
"Something bothering you?" She turned to him, taking about by his question almost as if really care for the answer.
"Nothing. Some memories are hard to forge sometimes." She only explained. They had stopped talking after that but she had stayed sat beside him. When the swordsman had decided that it was time for some training, he had been surprised to see the surgeon and the woman playing Go together. He must have fallen asleep for a while that he hadn't noticed it. When came the night, she had proposed herself to be on watch with the young doctor. At the general surprised, their captain had said no. Even the doctor had said that it did not bother him. Yet, the respond stayed the same. The surgeon had reassure the young doctor once outside, saying that he wasn't sleeping much anyway so he would keep him compay. That same night, someone had attacked the ship and the two captains and the doctor had decided to go on a mission. Kate, who had stay on the ship with the other, hadn't helped to fight but stayed awake like the other until their returned, keeping an eye on the prisoner. The swordsman had been surprised when she had kicked the man unconscious after hearing a few remarks. She had only shrugged in response of his glare.
After two weeks of sailing, they finally arrived near her destination. She was putting all her belongings back into her bag when the captain of the ship arrived. They had spend two weeks avoiding and ignoring each other that she had been surprised to see him approaching her. Yet, she kept stuffing her clothes in her bag first, letting her maps and notebook for the end. She noticed his sandals in her vision, but she kept folding.
"What can I help you with?" She had asked him, reaching for a maps behind her.
"We arrived at your destination." He simple aswered her.
"Thanks." She said to him. Then, she noticed that she had forget to fold her hammock too. So, se started to undo her bag under the stare of the captain. She could feel his eyes on her but she didn't say anything. So, once she had emptied her bag and fold her hammock as tiny as possible, she started to pack again. At her surprised, he had started to go through her maps, they hadn't anything interesting on the maps itself, only if you knew what you were looking for, so she let him. He stayed for a few minutes at studying them before to pass them to her. Then, he had grabbed her notebook.
"if you ever think about opening it I'll cut you hands off you fucking brat." He had immediate closed it, not having the time to see what was inside.
"I saw you write in it since day one. Is it where you keep the information you gathered?" he asked her, studying the cover that had been drawn on it.
"Do you really think that I'll keep information as precious as that in a notebook? How stupid are you?" She had asked, almost wondering if he had an ounce of intelligence.
"Why did you drew on it ?" He said still looking at it, turning the notebook to the other side to see the drawings.
"I got bored sometime. Now give it." She said, extending her hand in his direction. He stayed put, as if he hadn't been listening. His fingers passing on the line of some sort.
"Give it!" She had said again. He almost threw it at her before to lower his hat once more.
"Get ready, we drop you off soon."
When she had stepped out of the ship after two weeks, she hadn't forget to thanks the crew, she had even patted the little doctor on the head. After two weeks, she had grown rather fond of him. She said her goodbye and followed the two captain on the docks. She had told them that she will give them the information only when she would be on the island and not before after all. So, they walked in silence out of the docking area and found an empty street near the shore. She dropped her bag and turn to them, a deal was a deal after all. So, she opened her bag, took out her notebook and a pen. After a few second, she reaped the page off, put the note book back in her bag, the pen behind her ear, put her bag on her shoulder, gave the paper to the surgeon and said goodbye and walked away. The two captains looked at each other for a moment, then, one started to read the paper he had been given while the other took out of his pocket a cube. He started to walked after her, after a few second, he could still see her at the end of the street.
"What do you want this time?!" She had asked him after turning back. He handed her the cube. It was a strange sensation seeing your own beating heart in the hand of someone else. But, was it really the first time it happened to her? She wasn't sure anymore.
"A deal is a deal. This is yours." The woman looked at him, then her heart, then one last time at his scar before to sight.
"I don't need it." She stated before to start walking again.
"But, it's yours!" He claimed, running after her. She turned once more, almost crashing into him. "Listen you brat! I told you to keep it so keep it! I don't want it! Not before, not ever! Give it to the surgeon, I don't care. I gave you the information now, our deal is done." Then he watched her disappeared into the crowd in the next street. He stayed there for a while, holding her heart in is hand. The surgeon arrived behind him, took the heart back and left, dragging him away. When they stepped on the ship again, the surgeon took his sit near the mast and shared the information with the rest of the crew. He didn't mention the part where she didn't take her heart back. It wasn't their business and since their captain didn't told them either he guessed that it won't ever be discussed again. The same night, while the two captains were on watched, the young one asked:
"What are you going to do with her heart?"
"Keep it for now." He simply said. To be true, he had been a little surprised to see that she had let it to theem. He could do so many things, even destroy her so easily now, that he found it careless from her.
"Why didn't she want it? I thought everyone needed his heart."
"I don't know. That woman is a mystery for many."
"Can I keep it?" He asked. "it's not that I don't trust you or else but…she gave it to me." He simply said. Technically, the heart belong the him since he was the one who reaped it out but, he wasn't going to fight over details. So, he put his hand in his jacket and took her heart out.
"Take it. It's all yours now." The young captain grabbed it carefully and put it on the grass before them. "You know that, you can kill her now, right?" The surgeon said, putting his arms behind his head, closing his eyes.
"I know." He responded before to take his hat off his head and to put it on the grass next to him, watching the stars. "I don't want to though."
