Winry and Edward were eating with her grandmother after working on a few clients' prosthetics. Edward was sitting next to Winry trying not to inhale his dinner that his lovely wife had made. She was such a good cook, and the potato soup was perfect for this cold day.
The telephone rang. Winry asked "Who is calling at this hour?" She was hoping it wasn't a client with an emergency. She really didn't feel like staying up all night.
Winry answered the phone "Rockbell Automail. This is Winry."
"I did it! I dialed the number right!" a young girl's voice said.
"Umm.. who is this?" Winry asked.
"It's me, Elysia!" the sweet girl said into the phone.
"Elysia, what are you doing calling me? Does your mother know?" Winry was worried about Gracia's phone bill.
"No, mom doesn't know. And she won't wake up either," Elysia said with a sad tone in her voice.
"Wait, she won't wake up?" Winry was worried. Edward and Granny's bickering stopped as they started to listen to Winry.
"Elysia, did something happen?"
"Well, mom is sick. I had the flu last week but I'm all better now. But mom, she's been sleeping for a long time. And I tried to wake her up because I'm hungry but she won't," Elysia started crying.
Winry felt terrible for her. She was so far away. "Elysia, I have to call Ms. Hawkeye. I'm going to see if she can come over and help you. I'll call you right back, okay?" Elysia agreed to the plan.
Winry hung up the phone and started to dial Riza's number. Edward approached her. "What's going on?"
"It's Gracia. She has the flu and Elysia can't get her to wake up," Winry said as she listened to the phone. Edward had a concerned look.
Riza answered and agreed to go to Gracia's to check up on them. Winry then called Elysia back and stayed on the phone until Riza arrived. Riza told WInry she would call her with an update once she figured out the situation.
Winry and Edward waited anxiously by the phone until Riza called back about 20 minutes later. She informed them that Gracia was very ill and that the doctor would be in tomorrow. Riza did get Gracia to wake up, and was currently heating up some cans of soup for their dinner.
Winry sighed. It wasn't good news but at least Elysia had some help. "Thank you Riza for calling us. Do you need me to come up there to help?"
Riza pondered. "Well, I will have to call out tomorrow to watch Elysia. School has been shut down this week due to the increase in flu cases."
"Okay, I'll take the train to Central tomorrow. Grandma can take care of my clients for a few days." Winry told Riza, who appreciated the help. Work was short staffed due to flu cases also.
Winry got off the phone and finished her dinner. She went into her and Edward's room to find him packing his suitcase. She looked surprised. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going with you. I'm not having you go to Central by yourself," Edward said thinking it would have been obvious.
"You don't have to go," Winry said as she started packing her suitcase also.
"I want to go with you. I just want to make sure that you're okay," Edward said. He wished Winry wasn't going but he knew that little girl needed his wife right now. He just hoped Winry wouldn't get the flu.
Winry looked touched. "Okay, we're both going to Central." Winry smiled up at him.
Winry's grandmother appeared at their door. "If you both are going, you're going to need these." Winry got some surgical masks from her grandmother. "It's spread by coughing and sneezing. You both need to be very careful. Wash your hands often."
Edward had been reading the newspaper, and this particular strain of influenza was particularly bad. And for some unknown reason, it seemed to affect young adults more than the elderly and very young. Edward and Winry were 19 so they were in the more susceptible category. Edward was worried. He didn't want to lose his new wife to an epidemic like he had lost his mother.
