Chapter 1
Remus Lupin had just woken up, turning his head towards his alarm clock, which read noon, "Overslept again" he thought to himself. Unknow to Remus, he was about to receive news that would change his entire life. He started to get up and go along with his daily morning routine, brushing his teeth, washing his hair and making himself breakfast. After sitting down, he hears a soft knock at his door. He quickly grabs his wand and heads towards the door; when he gets to the door, he hears another knock just as soft but more aggressive. He yells at the unknown person, "WHO'S THERE?"
"I come in peace Remus; it's Albus Dumbledore," said the mysterious figure. Slowly Remus opens the door, ready to strike in case he is being deceived; he sticks his head out, seeing an old man with long white hair and beard hold his wand in one hand and a bundle of blankets in the other. "Blimey Professor, what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be protecting the Potters?" asked Remus.
"Ah, I come bearing news about the Potters and their family; you might want to sit down" Albus announces as he enters Remus' home. Leading the professor to his sitting-room Remus looks back at the blankets Albus was holding and what he sees sends dread through his whole body. Slowly Albus starts to recount how Sirius Black had informed him of the death of Lily and James Potter, Lily's sister Petunia and her husband, Vernon Dursley. These words hit Remus like bricks, and he couldn't believe they were all gone.
"Professor, how did this happen? Weren't they under the protection of the Fidelius Charm? How did Voldemort figure out the location of Lily and her family? Asked Remus, trying not to show the fear and sadness in his voice. Remus, from that point on, didn't listen. What did it matter how Voldemort found Lily and James? All that mattered was now they were dead, and he would have to live with that. Remus broke out of thought right at the end of the explanation of how Peter Pettigrew betrayed his friends for protection, provided Lord Voldemort was still alive.
"Remus" Albus said pointily, knowing he had lost the concentration of his old student. Remus straightened up and shook out of his thought. "Remus, I need you to do something for me; before you decline my offer, let me explain what I need you to do." Albus said sharply, interrupting Remus from saying No. Albus moved the blanket in his arms to show the face of a baby boy; Remus gasped tears started forming in his eyes. "Remus, I need you to take care of Harry here, Just until Sirius catches Peter. He asked for you by name Remus, as an old friend of his and James. I'm in agreeance you are the best person to watch Harry."
Remus started to sob; he knew Sirius would never come back for the boy; even in school, Sirius could never be held down, always pulling pranks and getting in trouble. When he looked up to see Albus looking at him with those piercing eyes, he knew if he didn't take Harry, the boy would be doomed to a life of hardship and pain. Quickly after looking up, he said firmly, "I will take the boy and protect him with my life, but I must ask what happened to Lord Voldemort?"
For the first time, Albus looked down towards Harry and said, "The story is when Voldemort tried to kill Harry the spell rebounded, and instead of killing Harry, Voldemort killed instead." Albus and Remus both sat in silence, thinking how a boy no older than one was able to withstand the dark magic of Voldemort. The murmuring from Harry was the only thing breaking the silence in the house. Albus was sitting pondering if he should tell Remus his suspicions but thought, Better not push him too far, and I can always come back again to tell him.
Albus got up and walked towards Remus, placing Harry in his arms; Remus looked down and saw Harry was sleeping so peacefully, not knowing both Harry and Remus' life had been dramatically changed. Was it for the best only time could tell?
Five years later
Harry Potter had just woken up from the strangest dream; He was a baby sitting in his crib where he saw his mom get hit by a green light then fall to the ground, followed by another green light hitting him waking him up. These dreams were indeed strange but were not uncommon for the young boy. He slowly got out of bed and started to walk out to the kitchen, where he saw his uncle Remus who wished to be known as Moony since Harry was young, making him breakfast. When harry hoped up to his seat at the table, he looked over and saw his uncle covered in bruises and scratches, and this was even more common than the bad dreams that plagued him. "Uncle, did you have another fight with that cat on the roof? You look worse than normal" Harry asked while chuckling.
"You know Harry, one day that cat might come down here and scare you if you're not careful," Remus said jokingly, hoping that would be enough to scare harry from prodding further. He hadn't told Harry about his ailment; the boy was still too young, plus he loved the smile that the boy would get every time he saw Remus on the day after the full moon. Well, here you go, Harry, your favourite butterbeer-flavoured pancakes.
Right as he said those three words, Harry's eyes glowed with joy, and once he started eating, not even Remus asking how he slept stopped him from devouring the pancakes. After breakfast, he heard Remus again asking how he slept; this time, Harry told his uncle about the dream he once again had and for a second. He could have sworn Remus had a hint of worry in his eyes, but as quickly as it arrived, it then disappeared and was replaced by a warm look.
"Uncle Moony, when is Neville coming over?" asked Harry as they sat down in front of the fireplace and started playing some kid-friendly wizard's chess.
"He's coming over at noon with his grandmother, and she says they have a gift for your birthday on Thursday." Harry started to buzz with excitement; last year, she had gotten harry a new set of toy brooms which had been well worn the past year. The next hour of waiting for Neville and his grandmother was unbearable for Harry as he looked at the clock almost every minute. Which had annoyed Remus to where he almost jinxed the clock to yell at harry to stop checking the time; luckily, they got through the hour. Right at noon, Neville and his grandmother Augusta had come out of the fireplace, almost stepping on Harry and Remus.
"NEVILLE" Harry screamed as he ran at his best friend. They had both lost their parents to Voldemort and were raised by family and friends. Harry showed off his Chocolate Frog cards while Neville tried to trade for some of the cards he was missing.
"Too much energy the both of them," Augusta said quietly to Remus, which made both of them laugh. The next couple of hours were Augusta and Remus asking Harry and Neville about what they wanted for their future birthday. Both Harry and Neville typically celebrated their birthdays together. Unfortunately, Augusta had another arrangement on the 31st, which caused her and Neville to be gone. This didn't bother Remus or Harry much as they still saw them more than enough.
"Harry, why don't you open your gift?" Asked Augusta conjuring a box bigger enough to fit both harry and Neville inside. She was sure Remus was almost done making dinner and didn't want to rush after dinner. Harry moved over to the big present that she had conjured; looking at the wrapping, it looked exquisite with the gold ribbon and threads. He started ripping open the gift, and out came a pure snow white owl. Harry had never seen something so beautiful in his life. Dinner was just as exciting as the earlier talks; Harry couldn't stop talking about his new Owl, Hedwig.
After Dinner, they all groaned, "Remus, you outdid yourself again," praised Augusta. Remus just smiled, not wanting to throw up his food accidentally. It was now Seven Thirty, and Augusta and Neville were ready to return to Longbottom Manor. They said their goodbyes and stepped into the fire, which whisked them away. Harry started sulking as he hoped they would stay the night at least.
Harry woke up on the 31st with the biggest smile on his face. He didn't bother brushing his teeth or changing out of his pyjamas, and he just ran out into the sitting room where he found his uncle reading a letter with some fancy writing gold writing; he didn't get to see who had sent the letter. When Remus noticed he was up, he quickly hid the letter and said: "Happy Birthday Harry, you ready to have the best birthday ever?" They first visited Diagon Alley, where they got ice cream at Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour; then they walked into Gambol and Japes Wizarding Joke shop where they got a laugh from all the small samples they were allowed to have. Finally, they went into the Magical Menagerie where harry stood in Awe of all the owls, frogs, cats, and other pets he couldn't name. Remus bought some owl treats Harry wanted for Hedwig.
When they finally ran out of shops to visit in Diagon Alley, they returned home where Remus had some gifts wrapped for Harry, first was a set of magic shoes that would change depending on the weather. After that was a cage for Hedwig Remus, and Augusta must have planned it, He thought to himself. Finally, a comb and brush would maybe help Harry tackle his messy hair that never seemed to stay nice.
It was now nine p.m. when someone knocked at the door. Harry looked puzzled at who would be around this late; Remus thought he knew the time had come. He walked towards the door and opened it. Harry had never seen Albus Dumbledore; of course, Remus talked about him but seeing the man with his own eyes was a very different experience. Harry looked up and down the wizard, wearing a dark blue robe with stars that seemed to twinkle with the night sky, a long white beard and hair that needed to be cut years ago.
Albus came into the apartment hidden in the muggle suburb. Albus made that choice to protect the boy from prying eyes. "Remus, have you told harry about what we are doing tonight?" Remus shook his head; Albus turned to Harry and spoke softly and a tone that made you trust the man completely. "Harry, we are going to be performing magic on you tonight" Albus raised his hand, telling the youngster that he wasn't finished. "You will most likely not remember what happens tonight, but in case you do, please remember it was out of love and necessity." Harry didn't even have a second to ask questions as he saw a big white light hit him and instant sleep fell over him.
Harry woke up the next day not remembering Albus or the magic but felt as if he was lighter and happier; He ran into the sitting room when Remus wasn't there, he went to wake him up by jumping on the bed. Exploding one of the small filibuster fireworks he had from the day before, This woke Remus up with a jolt but was followed by laughter and chasing Harry around the apartment.
"Harry, do you like the gifts from yesterday?" Remus asked as he slowly got breakfast ready.
"Yes, I love them, uncle," Harry said while petting Hedwig and giving her a couple of treats. They both ate breakfast, then Remus decided to take the day off work and watch over Harry; unbeknownst to Harry, Remus knew what happened last night and hoped the ritual worked and Harry would be free.
July 29th, 1991
Harry was in his room making a list of things he wanted to do at Hogwarts this year; earlier in the week; he received a letter saying he had been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He had expected this letter after being told by Remus. That his family were accomplished, wizards and witches, for generations, now he was making a list of things he would like to achieve while at Hogwarts the list included items like, Join the house Quidditch Team, Get all Os in his OWLs, but had more fascinating dreams as Discover a new potion and spell. He was finally called out of his room by his Uncle Remus, who was getting ready for their trip by floo powder. They agreed to join Neville to collect their books and materials for the upcoming school year.
"Hey Neville," he said as they walked out of the Longbottom Manor's fireplace, it had been a year since Harry had visited. Still, it was all the same, High ceilings with dark sea blue walls and white columns; pictures of previous Longbottoms hung along the walls, all greeting Harry as he moved down the halls. He was asked to wait outside a mahogany door that he knew was the office. Finally, Neville came out holding a coin purse which he guessed was for all of Neville's new books. They met up with Remus at the fireplace and used the Floo powder to reach Diagon Alley. Little did Harry know when he returned to Remus' muggle apartment, he would not be the same Potter who woke up earlier that morning.
