It was Mid-day Maryse Lightwood, along with her children Alec and Isabelle and Jace step out of the portal and back onto the grounds of The New York Institute, 2 steps behind them are Jocelyn and Clary. The sun was shining through the overcast sky.
"Mom!" Clary states, "Now that I can use my real name, don't you think it's time you finish my training?"
Clary was honestly looking forward to it, of course she wasn't necessary thinking about the impact of the revelation itself she wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps.
Clary and Jocelyn became the center of attention in an instant. As Clary scanned the faces of her friends, Maryse Lightwood's was one of confusion as was her children, but Jace's face read as disappointment mixed with betrayal. He was about to run off when a voice cut through the silence.
"Jace Herondale" Jocelyn stated brushing her hair off her face, locking eyes with him, "Before you run off and start brooding you should listen to what I have to say."
Stopping mid-stride Jace turned to look at hardened green eyes lock with blue and for the briefest of moments Jace saw how dangerous Jocelyn Fairchild is.
"Why don't we take this to the library… where we can be more comfortable" Maryse offered as she headed inside.
12:15 P.M.
Maryse had just finished serving refreshments when Jocelyn stated, "When Clary was 5, she asked me to learn Karate, it's not that dissimilar to Shadowhunter unarmed combat."
Taking a sip of her tea, Jocelyn continued saying, "I observed the class and realized I knew more than the person teaching the class, and I told her I would train her myself."
Reading his face she said, "You are correct Jace it raises the obvious question"
12:30 P.M.
Holding up both hands in a set of air quotes Clary said, "Mom just told me she was in the military, in Special Forces and couldn't talk about it."
"Not a lie." Jocelyn stated with a slight chuckle at the memory, "Shadowhunter's are a specialized military unit."
Under her breath Maryse stated, "Dam Right we are."
"The rest you know."
"Jace." Jocelyn said, "Valentine's influence ran deep in The Clave probably still does, I couldn't trust anyone."
"I'm sorry I lied Jace, but mom told me, never use it unless your life was in danger, and never tell anyone were your learned it from." Clary said, "Mom can be very persuasive."
1:00 P.M.
Just as Jace was about to ask a question the distinct sound of a rising elevator was heard throughout the library itself.
As they exit the library, they see a woman and a Silent Brother exit the elevator and the silent brother has Church in hand and is scratching his ears.
Church hates everyone… yet that silent brother is petting him like an old friend… Jace thought watching the scene unfold.
"TESSA" Clary said slightly louder than she should have, and ran into her embrace, much to the shock of everyone the stranger held out her arms to Clary too.
"Let's get back to your library shale we." The Silent brother said as he glided down the hall.
1:30 P.M.
"I suppose introductions are in order." The Women said, "Although I use my ;3maiden name Gray now, my husband and I ran The London Institute… but I'm getting ahead of myself"
"I was born in 1862 in London In 1878 I moved from New York to London, where I Met Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs, and they saved me from The Dark Sisters."
"I fell in love with both men, but I married Will Herondale."
Unrolling a scroll Tessa points to the entry for Will Herondale and Tessa Grey, moving down one level to James Herondale and Lucie Herondale.
"James married Cordelia Carstairs"
"Now Tess" The silent brother finally said.
"Jesse Blackthorn, married my Lucie"
Owen Herondale Married Lydia Kingsmill and had a child named Marcus Herondale"
"Marcus Herondale had a son with Imogen named Stephen Herondale"
Jace finally spoke up asking, "I couldn't help but notice you didn't get into your family history…"
Pointing to the silent brother Jace asks, "Who is he."
"Most know me as Brother Zachariah"
"Jace, haven't you ever wondered why demon blood had no effect on you." Tessa said in a cold matter of fact tone of voice, "Why he had to use Angel blood!"
3:00 P.M.
Looking the Shadowhunter in the eye, Tessa said, "What I am about to tell you was only known by Wiil, Jem Carstairs and The Branwell's"
"My father was Belial, a Greater Demon and Fallen Angel... my mother was Adele Lucinda Starkweather an unmarked Shadowhunter, I'm also an unmarked Warlock"
"You Jace Herondale are my descendent."
3:15 P.M.
"Excuse me" Isabelle said going over her linage in her mind asking, "You said you married Will Herondale."
"Yes" Tessa said smiling as the girl put the pieces together, as looked around the room.
"And Will Herondale had a sister Cecily Herondale!"
"Cecy." To her friends Brother Zachariah stated, "I wasn't always a silent brother."
"Wait I minute." Alec spoke, "Since when to silent brother speak with human voice!"
Smiling Brother Zachariah said, "I'm not like most brothers"
3:30 P.M.
Walking out Brother Zachariah said, "Clary… it's time to learn how to be a proper Shadowhunter, Jocelyn may have taught you, but I'm testing you."
"Jace." Tess said, " Before he was Brother Zachariah, he was Jem Carstairs Parabatai to Will Herondale, and their exploits were legendary to say the least."
"If you will forgive the expression, they fought… like demons possessed…"
"Who do you think taught Cecily Herondale."
Shaking off the memory Tess said, "Will was more reckless than you from what I hear Jace… remind me later and I'll tell you about the time he bit a vampire."
As the group approached the weapons room they hear as they enter the room. Both Jem and Clary were circling one another their feet gliding across the floor.
Clary's left leg was sliding sideways behind her right, as her right stepped out into a stance.
She is sizing me up… Jem thought as Clary shifted direction without warning advancing on him Jem was forced to go on defense blocking a downward diagonal slash to his neck
Crack…
Faster that anyone could see Jem blocked
Crack…
Then launched into a counterstrike
Crack…
"Jem is testing her ability…" Tessa stated, "In his prime her was well…"
Pressing her feet into the floor and twisting them to check her footing Chary advances on the aged Shadowhunter for the second time only to have Jem reverse the flow of the battle forcing her to block three quick strikes
Crack.. Crack.. Crack..
"Clary, don't rush things." Jem said "I have 135 years of experience over you, and I never stopped training"
Crack, Crack, Crack…
So much like Will he thought smiling at Clary Jem said, "Your mother trained you well, Your almost ready for live blade combat…" Smirking Jem said, "Almost."
"Clary, Not just anyone can force me on defense right out of the gate."
Moments later walking forward with a solid oak practice sword in her right hand and smirking Jocelyn held her daughter's sword in her left.
The look on her face said, now you're going to find out how good I am.
"You're about to find out how good mom is!" Jocelyn started eyeing Clary she said, "Jace, Alec, Isabelle, grab a practice sword and join me"
4:00 P.M,
On the other side of the floor Jem's Brow shot up to I high speculative arch, as Jocelyn moved to the center of the group.
Things just got interesting… Jem thought watching things unfold as he was deciding whether or not to join the fun
Off to the side Clary Fairchild, watched as her mother blocked Jace's attack with the sword in her right hand while attacking him with the sword in her left only to find a blade at his throat.
What happened next to the untrained eye would look like nothing happened at all, as Jocelyn sent blazingly fast side kick to the back of his knee and a front kick to his back before moving on to Alec, and she was on him before he could draw his bow, so he had to switch to blade.
Mistake… Clary thought watching the flow of the fight as her mother used the spine of the sword to take Alec's legs out from under him.
Jem was watching the flow of battle himself thinking, they're not working like a team…
Isabelle went in for the attack trying to seize Jocelyn's wrist and disarm her of at least one sword only to have Jocelyn eye her. No matter how hard Isabelle pulled back on her whip Jocelyn's arm didn't move, until it did, and Jocelyn threw her sword point first at Isabelle forcing her to dive to the side or get hit.
As she looked up from the floor, she could see the practice sword sticking in the wall and went wide eyed realizing that sword would have got her right between the eyes.
"You three are good, but you lack something." Jocelyn said offering Isabelle a hand.
Rubbing the back of his knee Jace asked, "What's that!"
Surprisingly, the answer came from Jem who said, "Killing intent… Clary may not be Clave recognized but she has more killing intent than all of you combined."
"And Jace" Jocelyn said, "I haven't had to fight like that in over 20 years."
Maryse Lightwood came in with, "As members of the group you were put in the center and had to fight each member… until you lost, then the person you lost to took your place."
"We didn't use practice swords!"
The three young Shadowhunter's realize what Mrs. Lightwood just told them.
"I believe the term you're looking for is "Live Blade"" Jem states, eyeing them carefully.
The Bell to the institute rang downstairs.
"It must be 5 O'clock." Jocelyn stated, "That will be Luke."
Moments later in the Library they find Luke sitting down, drinking coffee.
"Until now all of you have heard various stories concerning how I became a wolf, aside from myself there were 2 other people that knew the whole truth." Luke explained sipping his coffee.
"Valentine and I were patrolling the woods and forests of Idris when we were set upon by the pack, I called out for him, but Valentine turned his back on me."
Looking at Jace and Alec Luke said, "He betrayed his Parabatai, to werewolves"
Reading their faces Luke said, "He did it out of Jealousy… can't you guess."
5:00 P.M.
"You promised to tell us about Will and the vampires." Isabelle states.
With a light chuckle Tessa said, "Will Herondale had a habit of biting vampires, of course that meant drinking gallons of holy water, and usually I was the only one who could make him do it."
Recognizing the whip that was on Isabelle's hip Tessa said, "That once belonged to Charlotte Fairchild-Branwell, Head of the London Institute."
"And Church… once belonged to Jem Carstairs, when we were both members of The London Institute"
Leaning into Jace, Brother Zachariah whispered, "You need to have your protection rune reapplied... Meet me at Luke's, in one hour"
"Jace." Brother Zachariah said pointedly, "You do realize if you die, even if it's just a heartbeat the Parabatai bond is severed… right." His gaze settled on the young Shadowhunter.
That night in her bed Clary's mind drifted back to Lake Lyn in Idris
"Raziel" Clary said, "I know I've used my one request and you're under no obligation to answer my question, but I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark half the time."
Raziel carefully eyed the girl, before asking, "what more do you ask of me?"
"Only for someone to…" Clary paused trying to find the right words, "For a teacher, someone who knows more about runes then I do."
Such a small request! Raziel thought.
"Granted." Raziel told her, "But for now all you need understand is your intent determines the outcome."
"Miss Fry… you have managed something Jonathan Shadowhunter could not."
With that he was gone.
As they were leaving Maryse Lightwood approached Clary saying, "Someone left this for you."
Taking the ornate wooden box Clary notices an angel carved on the top, as she opens it she finds 2 karambits formed like angels wings along with a note.
The fight in the weapons room was interesting, but you won't always have time to draw a sword. Raziel was right, you are quite gifted, these should help in close.
