Notes: I needed to fix a few things and change something. Thank you for taking the time to read...I do not own anything but Katherine
Within Diagon Alley a sixteen year old girl twirled around to look at the two boys whom were a year older. Sirius Black and James Potter both had matching Gryffindor uniforms. Black's hair was nicely done while Potter's hair stuck up, the look her brother always tried to achieve. To him it was cool and gave him the edgy look. Katherine had dark hair like James but she kept her hair nice and fixed. She couldnt help but role her eyes as she carried all the books within her arms. Neither of the boys offered to help her, James would pick on Sirius if he tried.
"My little slytherin sister, decided to take all the courses offered" making fun of her choices was something James enjoyed doing.
"Trying to be head girl" Sirius added with a grin. James was head boy for his final year at Hogwarts. Katherine quickly turned to walk correctly as the pair continued to make comments of her choice. Her brother's ego was massive and him teasing people was something he did for fun. Immature, in Katherine's opinion. Trying to ignore them; as they continued their way where her parents informed them to go.
"Must be a slytherin thing...trying to be the best of the best" James added before he gently nudged her. As the nudge made her lose the grip she had on the books, they tumbled to the ground.
"Shut up" she hissed while picking her books, they didn't have much time especially with the train for school leaving sharply at eleven. Sirius stopped to help her. At times he was her saving grace, mostly when her brother was not around. Hearing James huff in annoyance she knew him helping pick up her books was now only because Sirius was doing it. Mummering thanks before she carried some of the books while the boys finally helped carry them. Of course having many courses seemed ridiculous, but it wasn't like she was in any extra activity, other then the Slug club. School work was all she had, sadly she didn't have many friends in her house. Not fitting in Slytherin because James was a known Gryffindor that bullied half her fellow housemates. James Potter had a known distaste for Dark Arts.
Once the three made it near the leaky cauldrons brick wall, Katherine locked eyes upon her mother. Her mother stood with her back striaght, her beauty was remarkable. Katherine at times envied how beautiful her mother looked. Her mum's blonde hair was fair as her icy blue eyes matched Katherine's shade. Always hearing that she was the spitting image of her mum as a child but with dark hair, she couldn't see it. Knowing that her mum was not feeling well Katherine offered her a warm smile. Her mum returned the warmth. She was everything to Katherine, her rock.
"Dad" James called out as he shoved the books upon his sister. Katherine knew daddy's pride and joy wanted to brag about things. James was the apple in his eye. Not having the same relationship with her father, she turned her attention to the potions textbook on top of her stack.
The train ride to school did not go as plan. James, Serius, Peter and Lupin refused to make room so she could sit with them. The boys teased and said that slytherins had to sit with slytherins. With annoyance Katherine couldn't help but put a hiccup hex on James. Hearing him hiccup on the train was the best part of the long ride. Arriving at school it was no surprise that Katherine was summoned to Dumbledore's office. She wasn't one to break rules like James, so unsure if hexing her brother on the train would be a major punishment. Nervous about the whole situation she followed Professor McGonagall toward the office. The witch before her wore her typical emerald green gown. The stern yet fair Head of Gryffindor stayed silent while leading the way. Making Katherine nervous with each step.
"They are inside" she nodded so Katherine knew to stand near the Phoenix statue. Katherine could of sworn she saw McGonagall smile before saying the candy password. Feeling like she was about to vomit from the fear of being expelled. She wasn't McGonagall's favorite, not sure if the woman even had favorites. Unlike the head of Slythern professor Slughorn. Slughorn adored some students, she was in the Slug club and it was her favorite thing about Hogwarts.
As the Phoenix turned to allow her to enter the headmaster's office she noticed a familiar face. The knots in her stomach slowly started to fade. Slughorm was beaming with joy as he locked eyes with her.
"Ms. Potter" Albus greeted. His white beard reminded her of snow on a Christmas morning. His half moon glasses rested upon his crooked nose. The Slytherin looked at both powerful Wizards before her. Dumbledore motioned for her to enter.
"Professors" she tried not to sound timid, but this wasn't a usual thing for her. Allowing her eyes to roam the office she was in awe with everything. Was he going to fuss her, she thought. The random items that caught her attention slowly made the memory of hexing James vanish. At his wooden desk laid a golden locket. It was beautiful but Katherine knew exactly what the item was. A time turner. Time turners were rare items. A total of three in all, rumors were that if the Minstrey of Magic found out people broke the rules with them, they would be taken and locked away. They had to be registered, knowledge for the Minister of Magic.
"This is a time turner. I'm sure you know all about them" Albus's words were soft as he watched the young girl. Katherine allowed her small finger to slowly lift open the locket. Exposing the clock inside. Slughorn beamed at his student. She was a diamond in his eyes.
"Yes sir" she replied. She knew how dangerous they could be yet how much knowledge one could gain by using it.
"its beautiful" she added as Dumbledore allowed her to pick up the item. He explained the positive benefits before his gaze became firm.
"This is strictly for studies only. Do you understand?"
Knowing that no one needed to know she had the time turner, Katherine understood Albus's orders.
"And by the way, sibling rivalry will get better" Dumbledore chuckled. "I heard about a little hiccup hex" his eye winked. Katherine never responded but gave an innocent smile. SlugHorn waved ahis wand making the proper paperwork appear. After signing the papers for the Minister of Magic, allowing them to know that she would now handle the item, she headed down to the dungeons to the Slytherin common room.
Inside the room the warm air consumed her, the dungeons to enter were cold and always made her teeth chatter. So feeling the heat from the fire was a relief. On the sofa sat two seventh years. Gaspar Avery turned his beady eyes in her direction. Katherine locked eyes on Serverus. His gaze was harsh and filled with distaste. She knew Snape hated her, his reason was foolish. She didn't agree with how James treated him for the last seven years. Yet her brother didn't listen to her.
"Potter" Avery's smooth voice filled the air. Averting her eyes to the brunette. Everyone knew in the house how evil he could be. She rose a brow, it wasn't like she was apart of their little group. "Where were you" he added. His tone sounded like her father when he questioned her on things.
"None of your business" she snapped. He had no authority over her. His question felt irrelevant.
"Watch your tonge" Snape hissed.
She didn't want to deal with the pair before her, rolling her eyes as she made her way downstairs to her bed. She could hear the boys laughing like idiots.
Katherine never forgot, the consequences of her actions haunted her daily. She thought as a child she was lonely but now she truly was alone. Looking at her reflection it was as if she stared upon her mother's face. When her mother died, it was hard for her own father to look upon her. The lack of relationship she had with him explained why she did what she did. In her mind it was done in the name of love, but what is love? A question she asked herself constantly. Tear drops had made her mascara stain the pillow upon her bed. It made eleven years that he was dead. James and Lilly were murdered, while her Godchild Harry Potter survived. The boy who lived. Eleven years and she never saw him again. It wasn't allowed since he was protected living with Lily"s sister. She didn't understand why the muggles could keep him, but knew her roll was to keep quiet. Katherine wanted to sneak a peak at him a few times but breaking one of Dumbledore's rules already did not turn out for the best.
Looking at the only photo she had left of James. Placed perfectly in the corner of her vanity. He was playfully shoving her. It was his wedding day. He looked smashing as alwaysl. They had a rough childhood but once he finally was able to secure Lilly, he changed. She helped change her brother for the better. Katherine was always grateful that the last years she spent with him, they finally were close. But looking closely at herself, makeup could not hide the bags under her eyes that day. She was tired, trying to live two lives but she was planning to end one. That day at her brothers wedding she decided. Maybe if she would of continued living her lie, nothing would of happened. The thoughts of maybe and what if consumed her mind. Feeling sick to her stomach she didn't have the energy to get dressed. With a wave of her wand the black skin tight dress complimented her figure. Her stilote black nail traced the snake necklace that rested against her flesh. Its S figure and green gem eyes, the simple pendent held so many secrets. It was a reminder in her eyes. Even though her typical emotions were taking place, she couldnt help but feel a bit of excitement. This year would be the year the boy who lived would attend Hogwarts. She wanted to see him, see his face.
Katherine opened her door to exit her plain room to enter a long hallway, the home was dark and gloomy. It wasn't exactly where she would want to spend her days, reminding her of a dungeon at times. Walking down the hall, her eyes locked upon the many suitcases that were all packed and ready for departure.
"Can I help you" his cold voice filled her ears. Katherine turned to face him, Serveus Snape. Looking at him she couldn't help but feel intimidated. He was no longer the lanky boy that her brother would bully. Instead he towered over her small figure, his black cloak touching the ground behind him.
Trying to sound cheerful she piped up "I was just coming to see you."
His gaze harden
"For the past eleven years you have never done so...why now" he knew why. He was teasing her like a puppy trying to get a bone. Katherine never saw him out the years they were bonded. Bonded not by choice or want
"I..." she trailed off
"Do not lie" his words filled with authority as he took a step toward her. Katherine was intimidated by the Potion Professor.
"I wanted to see him"
Snape huffed "of course to see the boy...oh I'm sure the famous Harry Potter will be front news on a paper. You can see him then" Snape turned swiftly. It was obvious to Katherine's ears that his words were filled with distaste and jealousy. He was a child that Snape never met yet he already couldn't stand him.
"You don't have to be so jealous...its pathetic"
Snape sneered. "Right I'm jealous...yet you were so jealous of what James had you're the reason your own Godchild has no parents...but yet I'm pathetic"
It was facts yet the truth stung. She was caught off guard for a moment, the pair had many quarrels before, but this time she just wanted to see her only family.
"Your are not innocent yourself, don't forget that you could have also warned Lilly" her being harsh in return. But knowing that Snape was no match for her. She slowly tried to change her tone and attitude. Her blue eyes widen.
"We both made mistakes...Serves...please" she begged. Inhaling deeply, she hoped. Hoping for a small bit of compassion.
Snape smirked as he fixed the cuffs on his long sleeves "No... I shall see you next year, my darling" he replied sarcastically . Clearly he has no compassion she thought. His eyes fell upon the snake around her neck before turning away to leave. He knew her whole truth, as she knew his deepest secret.
"Lilly would not have wanted you to keep her son away from his godmother, you know that" she snapped. Lily and her had a great relationship. It was Lily who picked her as Harry's godmother.
Snape was heading out the door before he left; she hoped those words caught his attention.
They did. But not in the way she wanted. Striking a nerve she watched him swiftly walk toward her. Taking a step with each word he spoke. "I'm sure your brother would be furious to know that you stay in my home...and" he stopped for a moment "that gives me great pleasure"
Hearing the last part Katherine knew James would be devastated. As a child she could careless what he thought, but as the pair grew older the sibling rivalry did settle. Dumbledore was right many years ago. He wanted her to be happy and yet she was living in her own nightmare. She never noticed he had walked away and left, she was consumed by her memories. Memories she wanted erased. Memories that Dumbledore kept in his office for safe keeping.
Katherine's price was not only her family's death, but she was ordered to live with a man who dispised her for being the sister of his bully. Anger consumed her while her hands gripped the vase near her, throwing it against the door that Snape had exit. She hated him yet she needed him to be safe. Dumbledore warned her it would be hard, but if she wanted to stay out of Azkaban or worse; she needed to live the rest of her life pretending to be his fiance. Snape had immunity thanks to Dumbledore and it protected her as well
