A gentle breeze shook the nearby trees as Ashlinn tried to regain her bearings. Where was she? The last thing she remembered was a truck barreling towards her and the Winchesters. Then… there had been a barrier. It had been like a reflex; magic had been pulled out of her before she'd even had a chance to react. Was she now dead? Had she at least been able to save the boys?
She looked around at the world around her. It was a clear, sunny day at a beautiful park, and she was alone in the park. Not a single soul around. Strange. The wind created small waves on the lake's surface. Ashlinn slowly approached the water's edge where the water was oddly still and gasped at her reflection. It wasn't Ashlinn the 13 year old. This was her adult face. She reached out toward the reflection, but even though her hands went underneath the surface, they remained dry. Maybe she really was dead. Perhaps instead of Dean, she'd been the one to die. If that was true, then at least she'd solved the whole John Winchester sacrificing himself for Dean as she doubted he'd make the same choice for her. Still, it was a bittersweet victory.
With a sigh, Ashlinn took a long look at the park around her. Was this heaven? It was nice, but… where was her family? She tried to remember what heaven was like in the Supernatural universe. Maybe it was a place where you were alone. Wandering around the park, she noticed a house in the distance. If it wasn't for the eerie silence, she'd be almost hopeful. Gathering what little courage she had, she slowly made her way to the house. The door was left ajar. Ashlinn reached out for the door, but her hand fazed through it. With a little relieved laugh, Ashlinn walked inside. At least it was unlikely anything could touch her.
The house was empty. Not abandoned but empty. A few plates were in the sink; a couple of cups sat on the counter as though the world around her had merely paused. Through the window, she saw a store in the distance. She walked through the side of the house, catching her footing on the ground. Pausing, she wondered how she was able to touch the ground but not anything else. Ashlinn jumped and landed softly on the ground. Maybe it was merely the fact that she was expecting to be able to walk. Ashlinn concentrated on a branch by her foot and tried to move it. The branch was harder to move than normal, but Ashlinn was relieved that she could do it at all. Suddenly, Ashlinn felt a chill go down her spine. She swiveled around, expecting to catch someone looking at her, but no one was there. No one that she could see at least.
With newfound purpose, she started quickly walking to the store. If she could touch things with enough concentration, then maybe something could grab her. Ignoring the feeling of something following her, she made her way into the store and ducked into one of the aisles. Keeping low, she circled back around the store until she found a place where she could watch the door while keeping hidden. Unfortunately, her hiding spot obscured her view when the door opened.
"Hello?" a young man called out cheerfully. "Ghost girl, where'd you go?"
Despite her urge to dive deeper into her hiding spot, she stayed still. Movement would give her away faster. The sound of footsteps got further away as he patrolled the store.
"I didn't mean to scare you. It's just… been a while since I saw someone. Please come out. I just want to talk."
Chills went up Ashlinn's spine at the friendly tone. There was no way she was going to talk to this guy. Absolutely no way. Ashlinn slowly moved into a spot where she could get a better look at his position. She saw the top of his head from behind one of the shelves. If she waited for him to go a little further… Ashlinn had to refrain from hitting herself in the forehead as she had a sudden realization. She could go through walls.
Slipping back outside through the wall, she kept low while circling the building to the back of the store. Free from the sight on the windows, Ashlinn sprinted back into the woods and kept going until she found a small shed. Cursing her lack of athleticism, she collapsed into the shed and kept an eye on the direction of the store. Now that she was away from that guy she realized how much easier it was to breathe. Was it because she'd been actively forcing herself not to hold her breath? No… it was almost like just being near him had been draining her of… energy? Magic?
Ashlinn rested her head on the wall. She'd run in different directions, so she doubted that he'd easily find her. At least not for a while. While she tried to figure out her next strategy, she felt that oppressive feeling again.
Ashlinn looked around the shed for a weapon, but the only things she saw were the empty shelves. She remembered that there was a rake outside. However, she could barely hold onto things, and she doubted she'd be able to swing a rake with enough force to do any damage. As he crept closer to the shed, Ashlinn's mind tried to settle on a plan. The doors swung open to a boyishly handsome smiling face.
"There you are, gorgeous. No need to be scared," he said as he crept closer.
Waiting until he was a couple feet away, Ashlinn quickly went through the wall and ran around the side. She closed the door and shoved the rake through the handles. Chills went up her spine as she heard him chuckle.
"Cute and smart. A dangerous combo… You do know that you can't run forever. Calm down, and let's talk things out. This is all a big misunderstanding."
"No thanks," Ashlinn replied and looked around the area. Ignoring his taunts, she bolted toward a large broken bridge.
Parts of the bridge had fallen into the water below. Signs warned of danger, but Ashlinn jumped onto a part of the bridge that was being held up by a single old piece of wood and prayers. The sound of branches cracking told her that he was close. As he came into view, Ashlinn looked into his eyes with contempt. His eyes held a dangerous playfulness like a cat with a new toy.
"Decided to quit running?"
"For now. One wrong move and you and I will both take a tumble, which I suspect… will hurt you more than me."
He held up his hands in a fake surrender and replied, "It seems we've reached an impasse. So… let's just talk then. My name is Kai. Yours?"
Ashlinn kept silent and stared him down. Luckily the hole in the bridge was large enough that he couldn't reach her without jumping to where she was standing. Another hopeful sign was that he was hesitating to join her. Clearly, she'd been right about the fall potentially hurting him.
"You're not even going to give me your name?" Kai asked with fake hurt in his voice.
"I'm onto you. Get lost."
"Onto what?" Kai tried to give her a wide-eyed innocent look, but she could see the hunger within. As he realized that she couldn't be fooled, his demeanor changed into haughty arrogance. "What do you think I want from you?"
"You're some kind of… magic… drainer… that's not the right word."
Kai chuckled and said, "Siphoner. Is that what you meant?"
"Sure. We can go with that. Bottom line, I know what you're trying to do. Go find someone else to bother."
"There is no one else… Just you and me. Why don't we make the most of it?" Kai asked sweetly and gave her a flirtatious look.
"I have no interest in a child," Ashlinn said irritably. At most this kid was in his early twenties, if that.
"Hey now. That's cruel. Besides, even though I was trapped here at a young, impressionable age, I've been here for a bit longer than that."
Ashlinn took a look around the area. She could chance jumping off, but if the fall did hurt her, then she'd be an easy target. It was better to hold her ground.
"Trapped here? Where are we?"
Kai's eyes widened in excitement, but he tried to reel back his enthusiasm. "Why don't you come back to safety and I can tell you-"
"I'd rather fall," Ashlinn replied, and her hand loosened on the railing.
"Wait! Okay… okay. I can see that we got off on a… rocky start. My fault, I'll admit. It's been a while since I've talked to someone, but… I can help us get out of here."
"Where is 'here'? In fact, what is 'here'?"
Kai seemed to consider his answer for a moment before he replied, "It's a world made to imprison someone… me. As a siphoner, my family never trusted me. Especially not my father. He made this place to get rid of the family disappointment." There was a bitterness to his voice that was real. Ashlinn still didn't trust him, but although she knew this was a ploy for sympathy, she could tell that it was also something he truly believed. "I need magic to get out. I just want to live my life. Is that so wrong?"
"No, but somehow I doubt that's the full story."
Kai rolled his eyes and admitted, "Okay… I may have… caused some family drama, but-"
"I'm going to assume that means that you stabbed someone," Ashlinn replied, and Kai faked a hurt look. "You give off serial killer energy."
"Have you met a lot of serial killers?"
"I've met a lot of people with bad intentions."
Kai sighed with a shrug and asked, "Isn't that everyone though?"
"No. There are some truly good people. Just because you're a Bundy doesn't mean everyone is."
"Good people, huh? Is that how you ended up here? Helping some good people? Look what good it did you. Trapped with a guy with 'serial killer energy'."
"Did I hurt your feelings?"
"No," Kai snapped back before changing his tune. "Okay, a little. I thought we truly had something… a special spark."
"No, we don't. But you are definitely trying to steal my 'spark'. I have no intention of being your magical piggy bank."
"Oh, come on. You're practically oozing magic. It's a little selfish that you won't even let me have a little. And you still won't even tell me your name."
Ashlinn looked at her hands. They had an odd glow to them. Was that what he meant? The sound of wood creaking made her look up to see Kai testing the bridge's sturdiness. He gave her a sheepish smile when he noticed her watching him.
Outstretching his hand, he asked, "Are you sure the fall won't hurt you? Come on. I know a place where we can sit and have a chat."
Ashlinn could already feel Kai trying to steal her magic. She glanced at the ground. A cracking from beneath her made her look down as the piece of bridge she was standing on swayed closer to where Kai was standing. She was too late. Indecision had been her downfall.
Kai chuckled as he grabbed her arm and pulled her into an embrace. Ashlinn tried to pull away, but the draining of her magic also drained her of energy. Kai's grip tightened, and she could feel his breath on her ear.
"Now… your name."
His grip tightened, and she felt her name pulled from her.
"Ash."
"Well then, Ash. Let's settle down and get to know each other.."
As his grip loosened, Ashlinn had a sudden realization. If he could touch her, then she could touch him. Grabbing onto his shoulders, she saw his eyes widen in surprise before she kneed him in the groin. As he fell to the ground, Ashlinn bolted toward the lake.
After a second of hesitation, she jumped into the lake. It was a strange sensation as the water made room for her, but she stayed dry. Running along the bottom of the lake, she realized that she no longer needed to breathe. Were her limitations merely mental?
She could hear Kai frantically calling her name from the surface. Heading deeper into the lake, she noticed a cave leading further down. All at once she felt compelled to enter and to run away. Feeling oddly compelled, Ashlinn started to walk toward the dark tunnel.
"Ashlinn," a woman's voice echoed in her mind, and as Ashlinn looked up to the water's surface, she saw a strange blue light.
With a leap, she grabbed onto the end of a pier and pulled herself up. The light beckoned her. Compared to Kai's yelling, it was practically a siren's song. She ran into the light and woke up in bed with a stranger holding her hand.
"Hello?" Ashlinn said and heard someone breathe a sigh of relief.
Bobby Singer looked at her from the side of the bed with worried eyes. His voice was gentle as he awkwardly asked, "How are you feeling, sport?"
Tears welled up in her eyes. Bobby began to panic for a moment before he gently pulled her into his arms. Ashlinn clung to him as she tried to calm herself down.
"Thank you, Missouri," Bobby said with an odd catch in his voice.
"No problem at all," Missouri replied in a kind tone. "How are you feeling, darling?"
Ashlinn let go of Bobby and turned to Missouri. She remembered this character from an earlier episode; Missouri Moseley was a psychic and a friend of John.
"What happened to me?" Ashlinn asked, hoping Missouri knew the answer. "I thought… that I was dead."
"Not quite. I've heard of the ability to dreamwalk, but I believe that you are a special case… You're not exactly a soul from this world."
Ashlinn's eyes widened, and she was struck dumb for a moment. Missouri was a psychic. It shouldn't be this surprising to her, but after so much time convincing other people, Ashlinn was just shocked to hear someone believe her.
"I thought not," Missouri said as though reading her mind. "Your soul and spirit aren't fully connected to that body. All it took was a large blast of power to send your essence to another world."
"So that was me? I did that?" Ashlinn asked, still confused about what had happened. She turned to Bobby and frantically asked, "Are Sam, Dean, and John okay?"
"Yes," Bobby reassured her with a smile. "Totaled that semi but not a scratch on the Impala."
"Good. I didn't want to hear John or Dean's whining."
Bobby chuckled at that.
"Will that… happen to me again? Will I keep going back to that place?" Ashlinn asked Missouri, and Missouri gave her a sympathetic look.
"I believe so, dear. Your powers woke up in a very volatile way. My advice to you is to set an alarm to your favorite song. It should guide you back to your body."
Ashlinn shivered as she wondered if she'd even get the chance with Kai being there. Now that she thought about it, how had he been able to find her so easily?
"Um… I'm sorry for asking so many questions, but… what's a siphoner?"
Missouri looked worried as she explained, "A siphoner is a type of witch. They can't produce their own magic… and have to steal it from others. Was there a siphoner there?"
Ashlinn nodded, and Missouri tried not to look too worried. However, Ashlinn could see panic in her eyes.
"His name was Kai. It was some kind of prison for him… Am I going to have to run from him every time I go there? Because if I don't… I don't think he'll let me leave."
Bobby's hand tightened on the chair, and he looked helplessly at Missouri.
"I'll look into it, hun. For now… just set your alarm, and if you need me, I'll come as quickly as I can."
