Orange Islands - Trovatopolis Pokemon Center
The week following Ash's defeat, suffered at the hands of Lorelei, and his confession to his friends regarding the visions that had plagued him, was a mixed bag for Ash. On the bright side of things, Lorelei's thrashing of the young trainer and subsequent wisdom given had a profound effect on Ash. It was one thing to see the Elite Four in action on New Island, but having one of its members take down your team personally in a battle is something else entirely. Ash felt humbled by the experience. He knew he had a long way to go before, but having something more tangible to grasp was a good thing. In retrospect, he was glad he learned the lesson now before competing in any actual league battles.
Another positive outcome from that day was the confession to his friends. Ash felt lighter than he had since he had entered the Orange Islands. An invisible weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He wasn't crazy. It was just something that came with being an aura user, or at least his version of an aura user. Most importantly, his friends were helping him in the search for information on his dreams, and more specifically, the prophecy.
That's where the bad news came in. They had nothing. Ash, Brock, and Tracey searched the web, trying to find any references to what Ash had described. At best, they grew more certain of the lore surrounding Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. The beast of the sea and everything else though was unknown. As for Lucario, he had written to his order back at Cameron Palace. The results were the same. Nobody there had a clue. That brought the group to the metropolis known as Trovatopolis. It was a large bustling city that reminded Ash and Brock of some of the larger cities they had visited in Kanto. They had hoped that the local library might have some answers, or perhaps some of the residents might know a thing or two. This was the third strike in their search. The library was a dead end and all anyone could talk about was some election for the mayor that was a few months away. Ash was just about ready to call it quits, or at least take a break, but Brock and Tracey suggested one final avenue, bringing him to his current situation in the local Pokemon Center at a video phone.
"Good Afternoon Ash. How's the journey going?" smiled the wisened face of Professor Samuel Oak.
"Can't complain too much Professor Oak. Have two Orange Island League Gym Badges and we're pretty close to the island where the third Gym is. But, i'm not really calling you to discuss my journey today," answered Ash. The Professor's face shifted to that of concern at the declaration from the normally enthusiastic youngster.
"Is something wrong Ash?"
"Well, it's a bit of a long story."
"I have nothing but time my boy. Let me have it." Ash proceeded to explain the whole ordeal with the dreams or visions, starting from when he first entered the Orange Islands to his confession to his friends. He also included an exasperated summary of their week-long failure to make any real progress during their search for information. During the story, Professor Oak said nothing, listening carefully and offering no hint of his own feelings on the matter. When Ash finally finished, Professor Oak spoke.
"Fascinating. Distressing for you though I am sure. I'm sorry Ash, but i've never come across any prophetic texts during my time as a researcher, especially since my time and field of study is dedicated to the relationships between Pokemon and how they interact with people. However, I do have some good news for you."
"Really?" Ash said with hope.
"First, that beast of the sea reference. I've heard it before. I think it may refer to the Legendary Pokemon Lugia. It a Pokemon that is spoken of more commonly in the neighboring Johto Region. Some have theorized that there is a tangible connection between Lugia and the legendary birds of Kanto, which might explain the conflict between the elements and that other natural force you mentioned. I'll be sure to double check just to be sure. On another note, while I am no expert in Pokemon mythology or prophecy for that matter, I do happen to know somebody who is a savant in the area.
"Who is it Professor Oak?" Ash was genuinely curious here, never having heard Professor Oak mention somebody like this when Ash was younger and regularly hung around the lab assisting him.
"It's actually somebody you've heard of. Sinnoh's own Champion, Cynthia Shirona, is also a notable researcher in the field of Pokemon mythology."
"Cynthia! The Cynthia! Well, that's amazing. I never would have guessed it," the bewildered boy answered.
"Even Champions have a life outside of Pokemon battling Ash. Alder in Unova dedicates much of his time to helping young people connect with Pokemon. Steven Stone in Hoenn is said to be a geologist. As for Lance, well let's just say he has another significant hobby that keeps him occupied. We have strayed from the point of our discussion though. Worry not Ash, I will reach out to Cynthia and see if she can find anything. It may be useful if I connect with Professor Ivy as well," mused the man.
"Thanks Professor!" the grateful boy replied.
"No trouble at all. Is there anything else I can help you with?" Ash was about to decline, but a completely separate issue came up. One he had been meaning to talk about, but it kind of fell by the way side due to all the drama that had been occurring as of late.
"Actually, there is something. By now you must have known I caught a Snorlax right?" Ash asked.
"I am aware. Just like your father in that regard. In fact, I think the only Pokemon you're missing is a Blastoise," chuckled Professor Oak.
"I was hoping you had an idea on how to keep a Snorlax fed and satisfied. He's a cool Pokemon that I really want to start training, but Brock was right when he told me that he would probably make us go broke on our food budget," frowned Ash. Nodding in understanding, Professor Oak continued.
"Your father came to me years ago with the same problem after he caught his own Snorlax. Think it was blocking a major road between Vermillion City and the route that splits towards Lavender Town and Fuchsia City. Anyway, I do have a solution for you Ash. There is a special recipe I have for Pokemon food that expands once it reaches the stomach. Give a normal size portion to Snorlax, and he will be content, back to sleeping away in no time. I'll send it along to you and Brock in an email."
"Awesome! In that case, I'd like to switch out a Pokemon for Snorlax. How about I send you Kingler?"
"That works for me Ash. I'll be right back to get your Snorlax and then we can make the exchange." Fifteen minutes later, the call had ended and Ash possessed his newest Pokemon, safely tucked away in a Pokeball. Finally, some really progress had been made, and on multiple fronts! That in mind, Ash was more than comfortable to turn his attention back to his journey. He had a Gym Badge to win in the upcoming days.
Orange Islands Ferry
Ash and company set aside the issue of the prophecy, happy to know that Professor Oak was on the job. His focus quickly turned to the upcoming Gym Battle on Trovita Island. Unlike the prophecy, there was plenty of information to be found on that subject. The Gym was run by a boy a few years older than Ash, who went by the name Rudy. His Pokemon were extremely diverse in nature, which suited the theme of his Gym challenge quite well. Supposedly, the challenger had to select three Pokemon types they would use in battle, and the Gym Leader would oblige by selecting those same types. From there, the Pokemon would battle 1 on 1, with each Pokemon type facing off. The first trainer to win two out of three battles would be the winner. There was also something about a moving target practice challenge before that, but from what Ash had read, it was a bit of a joke. The main issue would be with the Pokemon he faced.
So, Ash went to work thinking long and hard. Rudy reportedly had a Venomoth. Scyther would be a pretty good match up, and the Pokemon could use a bit of redemption after the debacle with the previous Gym Battle. Charizard was another Pokemon that hadn't battled in a while. Rudy's Ninetales or Pidgeot would fit the typing on that end. Charizard's diverse moveset and power could turn the tides. Plus, Ash just honestly missed his starter. Using a Gym Battle as an excuse to hang out was not something he would pass up. Tauros wasn't quite ready for a Gym Battle yet and Ryhorn just participated, so they were out. Princess had fought quite a bit recently, so she was also going to be sidelined. Lapras was possible, but a land based battle probably would put her at a disadvantage. Snorlax had received no training whatsoever, so obviously he was a no go. Ash could choose Pikachu to counter Electabuzz, but using Pikachu and Charizard in the same battle almost felt like cheating. Why not Hitmonchan? Sure, he had gotten crushed by Lorelei, but he hadn't actually participated in an Orange League Gym battle yet. If it came down to it, Hitmonchan would be the deciding Pokemon, which meant for now that Pikachu would be getting the shaft. Maybe Ash would make it up to him by letting him do the target practice challenge?
Ash ended up calling Professor Oak back one final time before they departed for Trovita Island, exchanging Ryhorn for Charizard. Ash's starter stuck to his word, agreeing to pause his own training for a Gym Battle. Leaning against the railings on a ferry to Trovita Island, Ash could still recall the moment he reunited with his first buddy.
Three Days Ago - Flashback
Ash made his way to a park deep in Trovatopolis, leaving behind his friends, master, and Pokemon. This was something he needed to do on his own. Surrounded by trees on all sides with nobody else in sight, Ash tossed the old Pokeball into the air. What emerged brought a surprise to his face. Charizard had grown. In just a few months, Charizard was visibly taller and his muscles were more defined. The fire on his tail even seemed to have more life to it. If this was simply the aesthetic change, Ash couldn't imagine the kind of power and moves his friend had developed.
"Hey buddy," softly spoke the misty-eyed boy with a noticeable crack in his voice, looking up at Charizard with pure joy. The Fire Pokemon stared back. His eyes still had that fire from the day they started their journey. A slow smirk showed on his face, as he offered his trainer a clawed hand, which Ash shook in an instant. Clearing his throat, Ash moved on, knowing Charizard wasn't into "mushy" stuff these days.
"You've gotten stronger. That much is obvious. Before the upcoming Gym Battle, I'd like to find out how much. Show me." Over the next few hours, Charizard did just that. Rudy was in for a rude awakening.
Orange Islands Ferry
"Hey Ash. Lost in thought again?" asked Brock, sliding up next to the boy on the railing.
"Just thinking about Charizard. He's really grown you know," reminisced Ash.
"Well, I'm glad you two have had the chance to reconnect. The bond between a trainer and their first Pokemon is a special thing." Ash nodded in agreement, turning pensive at that remark.
"Say Brock, I don't think you've ever mentioned it to me before, but what was your first Pokemon?"
"Onix. For all the faults my dad had, he's the one who gave him to me. It was the day I turned ten years old. I was sleeping in bed, and I just heard this loud roar. I opened my eyes, looked out the window, and there he was. My dad beckoned me to join him, so I hopped onto Onix's back. The three of us spent the day together, with my dad telling me everything I needed to know about being a Pokemon trainer," Brock answered wistfully. Outwardly Ash smiled at the story, but he couldn't help but feel a small twinge of jealousy. He wondered if his dad might have done something similar if he ever had the chance.
"MAN OVERBOARD!" cried the clear voice of Tracey, snapping Ash and Brock to the boy. The third member in their group pointed to the waters below, where a young girl and her Seel were caught in a rough current.
"HELP!" yelled the girl, disappearing beneath the waves in the next moment.
"We've got to save her" declared Ash, turning to Brock, only to see him leap from the boat and into the rough waters below. Brock paddled hard, fighting the current, striving to reach the girl in peril.
He doesn't even have a Pokemon that can help! Good thing I do.
"Cloyster, dive down below and help Brock rescue that little girl and Seel!" called Ash, releasing his Pokemon into the sea. Meanwhile, Brock finally arrived, latching onto the girl. Even with Seel's help, the duo didn't possess the strength to pull her out against the power of the current. If he didn't think of something, the two of them would drown.
"Cloyster," cried the rapidly approaching Pokemon, spinning in front of Brock to present a back spike.
Understood, thought Brock, using one hand to grab a hold of the spike. Cloyster's power allowed her to easily drag the humans, supported by Seel, to the surface. Brock sucked in air hard when he broke the surface. Gaining his bearings, he noticed Ash and Tracey getting closer on the back of Lapras.
"Here, take the girl first," Brock said, hoisting her up to Tracey, who received the now unconscious child. Ash helped Brock up next, thanking Cloyster for her service and calling her back.
"She's not breathing and her face is blue!" panicked Tracey.
"Hand her over," ordered Brock, still in his element. The teen started on CPR, offering mouth to mouth resuscitation, intermittently.
"Ash, have Pikachu give her a small jolt."
"What?" The bewildered boy asked.
"NOW!" sternly ordered Brock, going back to his life-saving techniques. Ash didn't need to be told again.
"Thunder Shock!"
"Chuuu!" Cried Pikachu from Ash's shoulder, releasing a small shock that enveloped the girl. The result was immediate. She started sputtering, coughing up water. Color returned to her face. She was breathing again.
"You saved her Brock!" exclaimed Tracey.
"Are you ok?" Brock compassionately asked, holding the young girl in his arms, as she slowly opened her eyes.
"W-Where am I?" she weakly answered.
"Just off the coast of Trovita island. You had a bit of a scare with a near drowning experience, but you're going to be ok now," assured Brock.
"Did you save me?"
"He did. Brock stepped up," Ash answered with pride. The girl smiled up at the face of the boy holding her, a small blush growing on her cheeks.
"Thank you Brock. I don't think I'll ever forget you."
Trovita Island
The group sailed in carefully on Lapras, navigating the current. Along the way, the young girl, who said her name was Mahri, explained that she and Seel simply got caught up in the current while playing on the beach. Soon enough, they pulled into a pier. Waiting for them, was a group of trainers, led by a teenage boy. He had the same auburn colored hair as Mahri. He also wore a cream vest to go along with a nice black shirt with matching slacks.
"BIG BROTHER!" cried Mahri, jumping off of Lapras and Into his arms.
"Mahri! Thank Arceus you're fine. Don't scare me like that," urged the boy, holding her close.
"I'm sorry big brother, but Brock and his friends saved me. I'm ok," affirmed the girl, pulling herself away. The boy's gaze flickered to the other passengers from Lapras, keying in on the teenager he had seen through his telescope from the dock.
"You're Brock I take it?" asked the boy, walking up to the teen.
"That's me, but really it was no trouble," Brock responded. Mahri's brother shook his head.
"Brock, if there is ever anything I can do for you. You need only ask. My name is Rudy, and I am at your service," bowed the boy. Ash couldn't help himself.
"As in the Trovita Island Gym Leader and member of the Orange Crew?" blurted the boy.
"The very same. And you two are?"
"I'm Tracey Sketchit," smiled the older of the two.
"Ash Red Ketchum from Pallet Town," answered Ash. Rudy's eyebrows rose at that pronouncement
"So you're here for a Gym Battle. Danny and Cissy spoke highly of you Ash, and since you're clearly friends with Brock, I'd be more than happy to oblige you."
"Awesome!" beamed Ash.
"The qualifying challenge for the Gym is actually nearby. I doubt you'll have an issue with it, but for the sake of fairness, we'll go through the motions. Follow me everyone," said Rudy, walking off with his sister, motioning for the other trainers to go about their business. Rudy lead the group to a small speedboat on a river. Once everyone was inside and settled, they began a leisurely pace driving down the river.
"We'll be coming up on the challenge zone soon. Your objective is to strike all the targets as they appear with a single chosen Pokemon, while the boat continues to move. If you miss any, you lose and the battle is off. Make sense Ash?" asked Rudy.
"Sounds good! Pikachu, I'll be sticking with you."
"PIKA! PIKA!" grinned the mouse, cracking his tiny knuckles together. As Rudy had predicted, it wasn't much of a challenge for Ash and Pikachu. It simply consisted of Ash spotting targets and ordering Pikachu to strike them. Rudy supervised of course, while Tracey kept his eyes out for any interesting sights to sketch. It was the other two passengers on board that were keeping things interesting.
"So Brock, how you liking the island so far?" onnocently asked Mahri, who Brock just noticed was uncomfortably close to him.
"Heh. Erm. Yeah, it's a very pretty island," smoothly answered Brock, sliding away and closer to the edge. Mahri closed the distance rather quickly.
"It is pretty! It's even better when you're spending time with someone who cares," sighed the girl, leaning her head into Brock's shoulder. Now Brock was panicking. Blatant flirting! Normally this would be great, but the girl was younger than Ash and by a few years! The fifteen year old's eyes shifted, meeting Lucario's.
Knock me out! Knock me out! Knock me out! internally pleaded Brock. Lucario smirked, slightly shaking his head.
"This is a great first date," dreamily said Mahri.
"A date?" squeaked Brock.
"Mmhm. And someday, we're gonna get married!" Brock was so screwed.
Trovita Island Rudy's House
Ash and Pikachu dominated the challenge, earning the right to a Gym Battle. Just as he expected, Rudy asked Ash to select three Pokemon types for battle. Ash went with Bug, Fire, and Fighting, just as he had planned. The battle would take place the next day, but for tonight, Rudy invited everyone back to his house for a nice evening meal and some good old rest and relaxation. As it turned out, Rudy was quite the cook. The gang were currently eating some delicious Black Angus Beef steaks.
"Dis is tasty Rudy!" The ravenous youth said in the middle of a bite. Good old Ash, back to his normal horrendous table manners, instead of being depressed and moody.
"Thanks Ash," smiled the teen.
"I helped with the salad! Do you like it Brock?" asked Mahri.
"Of course," nervously answered Brock, who had somehow ended up next to the girl again. After dinner, Rudy invited Ash down to his training room, Tracey went off somewhere to catch some sights, and Mahri dragged Brock off to who knows where. Ash soon found himself in what looked like a home gym. There were dumbbells, exercise machines, music was playing, and Pokemon of all sorts that were… dancing?
"What's with the dancing Pokemon Rudy?" The elder boy chuckled, but explained soon enough.
"I like my Pokemon well rounded Ash. There's more to life than just battling after all. Still, you would be surprised how beneficial dancing can be for a Pokemon's battle skills. Ash frowned, wanting to make a snarky comment about it being a waste of time, but the recent memory of his defeat lingered.
Maybe it really can come in handy? To each their own I guess. Ash simply shrugged, accepting the explanation.
"So Ash, what's your plan?" Rudy abruptly asked.
"What do you mean Rudy?" blinked the boy.
"After all this. After the Orange Islands. What do you want to do with your life? The others pegged you as something of a prodigy, so something tells me you haver bigger fish to fry than our little league," said the boy knowingly.
"That's easy! I want to be a Pokemon Master. To do that, I'm aiming to become Champion of the Pokemon League!"
"Which Pokemon League?" That was a good question, and Ash actually had to pause to consider it. He had always figured he would take down Lance someday and become the new Kanto League Champion, but after Lorelei's thrashing, he wasn't really sure he was anywhere near ready. So what? Would he simply stay in Kanto, training for years until he was? That didn't sound fun. He already tried that in Pallet Town and got bored within a few weeks. No. He needed to broaden his horizons.
"I don't think it matters," Ash finally answered.
"I'll keep battling until I get there. Taking on league after league with my Pokemon at my side. Someday, somewhere, I will be Champion!" Ash vowed with a clenched fist.
"Well said. As for me, nothing so glamorous," sighed Rudy.
"What's your dream Rudy?"
"I want a family Ash. Someone to live my life with. Somebody to help take care of my little sister."
"B-But you're only a few years older than I am? You're talking about marrying someone?" Rudy laughed.
"Not right away, but I would like to find somebody soon and to get to know them better. You'll feel the same way in a few years. Trust me," winked the teen.
Yeah right. Ash scoffed. Little did he know it, but Rudy certainly knew what he was talking about.
Trovita Island Battlefield
The Trovita Gym held their battles in style, off the coast of the island, on a large rock that rose out of the sea. Spiraling rocks surrounded the battlefield, also seeming to come up from the ocean. It was early in the morning and the sun was still rising. The skies were calm. All was quiet.
Ash and Rudy stood opposite one another on the battlefield, with Pikachu on Ash's shoulder and Espeon by the boy's side. A referee hovered in the air on his Pidgeot, holding a microphone. Brock, Tracey, Mahri, and the trainers now identified as Rudy's students spectated from a hot air balloon. Mahri continued to cling to her Brocki-poo, as she was now calling him. The referee broke the silence.
"This will be a best of three battle between Rudy, the Trovita Island Gym Leader, and Ash Red Ketchum, the challenger. At stake is the Spike Shell Badge. No substitutions may be made. Predetermined types were selected before the match. The challenger may choose the first Pokemon type to do battle with. The victor will be the first trainer to achieve two victories. Let the match begin!"
"We're starting with Fire Pokemon," Ash called to the other side of the battlefield.
"Well, I was hoping to save this little surprise for later, but you've forced my hand Ash. I wonder if you prepared for this? Pokeball, go!" yelled Rudy, releasing a Pokemon Ash had never seen in his life. A tall and slender rabbit-like Pokemon stood in place. Its fur was a mixture of white, orange, yellow, and dark blue. It also seemed to be smirking as it hopped in place, eager for battle.
Guess the Internet isn't the solution to everything after all. Let's see what dexter has to say, though the boy, pulling out his pokedex.
It's called Cinderace. Pure fire Pokemon from the far off Galar Region. Can also use some fighting moves and has an affinity for speed. Gotcha.
"Picked this guy up on my own journey when I was around your age Ash. Surprised?"
"I have to admit, I am Rudy, but it's one we will overcome together. Charizard, time for our first battle in a long time!" Charizard materialized, letting out a piercing roar to announce his presence.
"Take to the skies Charizard," started Ash. Charizard's wings stretched outward and the Pokemon soared.
"Don't let it get away. Use Bounce!" countered Rudy. Cinderace took off in a sprint, bouncing up mid-run, setting course for Charizard.
"Knock it away with Dragon Pulse!"
"Sucker Punch!" Charizard ceased his flight, opening his mouth to unleash a new trick he picked up back in Pallet Town, but Cinderace was too fast, appearing in front of the draconic creature and delivering a dark punch to his gut. Charizard was unfazed, glaring at the Pokemon that was now making a descent.
"Flamethrower as you're heading down," continued Rudy.
"Use Dragon Dance to dodge." Charizard vigorously swayed from side to side, avoiding the flames from the falling Cinderace, while upping his own attack and speed.
"NOW DIVE DOWN INTO THAT FALLING POKEMON WITH DRAGON RUSH!" roared Ash. Before Rudy could do a thing, Charizard barreled into Cinderace, surrounded by Draconic energy, forcing him to crash hard into the ground, forming a crater and sparking up some dust.
"Cinderace, are you—"
"USE YOUR MOMENTUM AND FINISH WITH EARTHQUAKE!" Interjected Ash, not taking any chances. Charizard crashed feet first, creating powerful seismic waves in the ground all across the battlefield.
"ACE!" yelped the Pokemon through the dust, in pain from the super-effective blow. The dust finally settled from the earlier attack, revealing a severely panting Pokemon on a knee, glowing with a fierce red energy.
NO WAY! It actually survived. Worse, looks like Blaze is in effect, observed Ash.
"Our turn!" growled Rudy.
"COUNTER ATTACK!" Time slowed down as Ash watched that rabbit Pokemon stand and charge, enveloped in a power that promised vengeance.
That's the strategy I use with Tyrogue, or well Hitmonchan. I don't know if Charizard can take the hit and survive double the attack power of that super-effective Earthquake. Even if he could, that will be a ton of damage. Need to think of a way out. We don't know Protect like Lorelei's Pokemon did. Escaping is easier said than done, because he'll keep coming until he's either knocked out or that attack lands… Yeah! That can work! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Time sped back up and Ash made his move.
"Fly up and then dive down with Dig!" Charizard glided into the air, vertically shifted his head down, and dove headfirst into the stadium, forming a hole, and disappearing.
"Follow that Pokemon!" commanded Rudy. Cinderace, still enveloped in energy, jumped into the hole. Ash curled his lip in response.
"EARTHQUAKE!" screamed Ash at the top of his lungs. Rudy's expression shifted from confidence to terror and the ground shook far more than earlier, since the attack actually occurred beneath the surface. Cinderace flew up back from the hole, bruised and battered. He landed hard, rolling to a stop in the middle of the stadium. Charizard burst out next, unharmed, settling in front of his trainer. This time, there was no doubt.
"Cinderace is unable to battle! The first battle goes to the challenger!" declared the referee.
"Awesome job buddy," praised Ash. Charizard looked back giving his trainer a wink as he was called back.
"Your reputation was earned Ash. Cinderace was my most powerful Pokemon, and my ace in the hole," sighed Rudy, calling his own Pokemon back.
"To be fair, Charizard is one of my strongest, if not my strongest as well."
"The Gym Leader will now choose the second type for the battle," called the referee. Ash didn't expect this rule, but he supposed it was fair that Rudy got a pick in. Hopefully he picked…
"Our next battle will be between Fighting Pokemon," spoke Rudy.
Darn! Sorry Scyther, internally moaned Ash, tossing his Pokeball into the air.
"Chan!" cried Hitmonchan, punching forward, hyped for battle.
"What a coincidence. I also choose you Hitmonchan!" jibed Rudy, releasing a carbon copy of Ash's Pokemon.
That's right! He had a Hitmonchan in his training room yesterday. Guess I tuned it out.
"You got this Hitmonchan! Start with Work Up," snapped Ash. Hitmonchan got to work, upping his offensive and defensive prowess.
"Mach Punch!" Rudy's Hitmonchan dashed forward at an incredible speed, smashing its fist into Ash's Hitmonchan's cheek and dealing some early damage. Ash's champ took it well though, not sliding back an inch,.
"Bullet Punch!" Ash cried.
"Show me dance," abruptly said Rudy. His Hitmomchan immediately started diving, ducking, dodging, diping, and turning away from all incoming blows.
He really does incorporate dance into his battles. We need a new plan.
"Power-Up Punch," pressed Rudy, snapping Ash's attention back to the battle.
"Dodge!" tried Ash, but to no avail as a glowing fist connected with Hitmonchan again, dealing more damage and boosting Rudy's Hitmonchan's attack power.
We need to speed up
"Agility into Brick Break!" Hitmonchan blurred moving around from one spot to another with his own trot. His armed was raised, ready to deliver a chop—
"Spinning elemental fists!" Rudy's Hitmonchan spun. One fist was coated in fire and the other ice.
"CHAN!" cried Ash's Pokemon, slapped away by an icy fist.
"Press the attack and move that spin towards's Hitmonchan!"
"VACUUM WAVE!" Ash's Hitmonchan slammed his fist to the ground, sending a wave of energy that connected with Rudy's spinning target, who was unable to dodge. The Pokemon slid back, taking some damage, but hardly enough to put him out of the fight.
"Good save Ash. You'll have to land some substantial hits to take us down though," chuckled Rudy.
No kidding, but that's easier said than done. His Hitmonchan may not pack the power of his first Pokemon, but it more than makes it for it with speed, creativity, and a versatile moveset. One of these days mine needs to learn those elemental punch attacks. Punch attacks? That's right! Hitmonchan's new ability! It's risky, and we'll need to get close, but that might just be the advantage we need to even things up.
"How you hanging Hitmonchan?" asked Ash. The Pokemon turned back to give his trainer a firm nod, despite any earlier damage he had taken.
"Good! Then I need you to charge in with another agility and Brick Break!"
"CHAN!" cried Hitmonchan, blurring again at an even higher speed with his arm raised.
"That didn't work last time, and it won't work now. Spinning Elemental Fists!" commanded Rudy. The whirlwind spin of the elements began anew, and Ash's Hitmonchan grew dangerously close.
"ENDURE, GRAB HITMONCHAN, AND USE MEGA PUNCH!" Ash's Pokemon glowed red, crossing his arms, and then he flew into Rudy's Pokemon., Two elemental fists connected this time, but shortly after the momentum from Ash's Pokemon sent both fighters to the ground, with Ash's Pokemon on top. Not wasting tine, Ash's Hitmonchan grabbed a hold of Rudy's, raising his other gloved hand in the air. A white light enveloped the glove and it came down.
"BULLET PUNCH!" BOOM! The attacks landed at the same time. Rudy's Hitmonchan delivered swift additional punches to Ash's Pokemon in the gut, just as Mega Punch made impact on Rudy's Hitmonchan's face. Rudy's Hitmonchan was knocked out immediately. As for Ash's…
"Chan… Chan… Chan… Cha…" Ash's Pokemon collapsed, falling to the side, laying unconscious next to Rudy's own downed fighter.
"Both Pokemon are unable to battle! This match is a draw!" called the referee. Ash frowned at the judgement, thinking that his own Pokemon had managed to stay conscious slightly longer, but he let it go. There may still be another battle to be had after all.
"My Hitmonchan should have been able to withstand that based on the earlier damage he took. Care to enlighten me how your Pokemon knocked him out?" asked Rudy, returning his Hitmonchan.
"First there was Work Up, but Hitmonchan's special ability is Iron Fist. It allows him to pack an extra punch with any moves that involve his fists," explained Ash, calling his own back.
"So, what next?"
"You haven't won, and yet you can't lose. In the event of a tie, it's at the Gym Leader's discretion on whether or not a Gym Badge will be awarded. Better make this a good last battle Ash, because I will be paying attention," Rudy warned, sending out his final Pokemon. This time, Ash was not caught off guard. Venomoth appeared as expected.
"More battling huh? I can always get behind that. Scyther, let's go!"
"Scyther!" cried the Bug Pokemon, showing up on the battlefield and slashing his claws together.
"Ready for your first Gym Battle?" called Ash. Scyther answered with a predatory grin. It was go time, and Rudy made the first move for the last bout.
"Venomoth, use Gust!" A hard flap of the Pokemon's wings sent a spiraling gust of wind towards Scyther, bent of dealing early super-effective damage.
"Swords Dance," calmly countered Ash, remembering a certain older Scyther making good use of the move. It was also ironic how similar the strategy was to Rudy's Hitmonchan's earlier move. Scyther rapidly spun in place, greatly upping his attack and defecting Gust off to the side.
"Disable!" Venomoth's eyes glowed blue, and Scyther followed suit.
"That takes care of any future use of that strategy," taunted Rudy. Ash ignored him.
"Agility into Double Team." Scyther sped forward, disappearing from sight with heightened speed, before reappearing all around Venomoth in a dozen copies.
"Wing Attack!"
"Bug Buzz!" Twelve Scyther's sped forward, scythe raised to deliver the attack, and Venomoth's body began to vibrate. Ash narrowed his eyes, seeing the traces of sound waves with his aura-trained eyes and he acted.
"JUMP!" Rudy was shocked to see the Scythers leap over the invisible waves, before watching the Pokemon dive forward, delivering Wing Attack with prejudice.
"VENOMOTH!" screeched the Pokemon, in severe pain from the super-effective blow.
"Bug Buzz again!" yelled Rudy, desperate to get Scyther away. Ash knew Scyther was far too close to dodge this time. The problem for Rudy was that he didn't care.
Why try to dodge? It's not-very effective.
"Take the hit and use Wing Attack one more time to end this!" ordered Ash. Scyther's copies dissipated from the attack, while the original took minuscule damage, but he fought through it, slashing at Venomoth again, and hitting true, with Wing Attack!
CRASH! Venomoth was slammed into the ground, skidding towards his trainer. The Bug Pokemon didn't move.
"Venomoth is unable to battle! As the challenger has won two battles, Ash Red Ketchum is the winner!" declared the referee.
"SCYTHER! SCYTHER!" cried the Pokemon, preening himself on his achievement. Ash sweat-dropped at the display, but he guessed Scyther had come pretty far.
It might just be a Venomoth, but I'll let him have this one, rationalized the boy.
"You did good Scyther. You did good. I'm proud of you," smiled Ash, calling back Scyther as the Pokemon shot him a grateful look.
"I could have beaten that Venomoth way quicker," muttered Princess.
"Are you getting jealous Espeon?" her amused trainer asked, catching the unintentionally voiced words.
"Pika. Pika," tutted Pikachu, waving his finger back and forth.
"N-No. You weren't supposed to hear that," flushed the Pokemon. Lucky for Princess, Rudy approached Ash and drew his focus.
"That was a nice battle Ash. Something tells me you had stronger options in reserve as well. I think you have a good shot at taking down the final Gym and winning the Orange League," clapped Rudy.
"Thanks Rudy. You guys put up a good fight," answered Ash, shaking the Gym Leader's hand. Reaching into his pocket, Rudy pulled out a small object, handing it over. It looked to be a spiral shell with spikes on the outside. In the center a pink gem shined bright.
"I confer upon you the Spiked Shell Badge. Best of luck with the rest of your adventures."
Three down. One to go.
"FOR THE LOVE OF ARCEUS, LET'S GET OFF THIS ISLAND!" shrieked Brock.
The Floating Palace - Unknown Location
Ghetsis Harmonia Gropius swirled the red wine in his glass, relaxing in his seat of power. It was the seat from where he reigned supreme over his magnificent fortress. Soon, that reign would extend to the world at large, but that was a minor detail. Taking a small sip, the man sighed in contentment, enjoying the liquid, and then straightening up.
"Computer," spoke the man.
"Yes?" answered a monotone voice, seeming to come from nowhere
"Repeat that line from the prophecy," ordered the man.
"Oh, Chosen One. Into thine hands bring together all three. Their treasure combined, tame the Beast of the Sea."
The meaning is clear. I need only collect the legendary birds, taking on the mantel of the so called chosen one. This will gain me mastery over the great Lugia. With that power, none will stand in my way. I shall be KING!" thought the man with an unsettling twisted grin.
"What's the status on the search for Kanto's elemental titans?" Ghetsis asked.
"Scanners indicate no significant source of power nearby. No trace of Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres detected," responded the same robotic voice. That was to be expected. They had only just arrived in Kanto, hiding high above the clouds to avoid detection of course.
"And our current location is?"
"The vessel is currently above the city identified as Pewter City."
"Very well. Proceed with the sweep of the region. We will continue south as needed," dismissed Ghetsis.
"Yes Lord Ghetsis."
I must be patient. A search of the region will take no more than a few weeks at most. Should that fail, the Orange Islands is another possible location based on the ancient texts. It matters not how long the search takes. The world will be mine, as is my right.
END CHAPTER
Ash wins his third badge in the Orange Islands! We also got some more villain screen-time, which remain my favorite type of scene to write.
Next Time - We get a training montage, focusing on some needed upgrades to Ash's team. A new Character POV will be introduced in another side scene. At least one Pokemon will also be evolving. Perhaps some Aura Training will occur. Needless to say, it will be original and not based on any particular episode, so it will probably be on the shorter side. We probably have two chapters left until the second movie.
Guest - Thanks for the review! As I mentioned to a previous reviewer, wait until Hoenn.
Reader - Thanks for the review! Glad you caught the reference. Thought I was being clever lol. Paul's journey to Hoenn first is intentional. Let's just say he won't be alone.
Reader2 - Thanks for the review! Ash had to lose eventually, and his mood certainly didn't help him do his best. As for Paul, the character always seemed like he could hold a grudge. Seeing some punk rookie trainer force a tie out of his veteran brother stuck with him. He was also interested in Ash's cool and even demeanor during battle, not catching the whole love your Pokemon aspect side of Ash. I think he sees Ash as something his brother couldn't full overcome, like Brandon, so he will do its himself.
Talesfanjmf - Thanks for the review! Mostly responded already over message, but again I love the idea about the Silver Wing! Will shout you out if we go with that plan.
Espeon860 - Thanks for the review! Ash just needs to get it through his thick head not to shoulder the world's problems on his own.
PKMN TRNR Jesse - Thanks for the review! Funny story about that guy. He didn't exactly post with permission, but at least he is linking this story in his videos now. Anyway, glad you like the story and I appreciate the suggestions. Pikachu evolving may happen, though I am very set against it for at least a few years in his journey. It would be Sinnoh if it all. As for Red, he is dead. In a world full of legendary Pokemon and a literal Pokemon God though, is that really too much of a barrier? Time will tell. Keep the reviews coming!
Today, I am making another recommendation. If you haven't heard of it, check out AGDQ. It's a wonderful gaming event for a good cause. You can find videos on Youtube.
