Hello again readers! First off, welcome new Followers and Favorites jcarbono008, 755849, Eadane, Regulus Nemea, and Anthima Nix! I really appreciate it and I'm glad this story caught your attention! Before we start off with the chapter, a little recognition to my awesome reviewers with quick answers to questions and comments.
CrimsonRev: I know the last chapter was really short, I tried lengthening it as much as possible before posting but hopefully I would make up for last chapter with this one with length and context. The hero chapter sort of reflects how misunderstood the Yakuza is in regards to Eri from an outsider's point of view. All of Overhaul's men know they are just holding the fort until Overhaul gets Eri out for she is the priority. And it's true the heroes are going to have to be more cautious once Overhaul decides to go all out with him being the strongest amongst them. To be honest, it's challenging and exciting to express the span of characters' range of personality, Kai being one character in particular who puts on personas for different types of people.
Flashyyyyyyy: *Evil laughter*;) I'm glad you enjoyed last chapter! Hope you like this one as well!
MeMyselfAndI82907: I'm glad you pointed out how Eri distinguishes different feelings on Kai verses Overhaul because its true she has no positive feelings for Overhaul. With Nighteye, I have to admit he's sort of difficult to write and I'm sorry if he's a bit out of character in regards to pushing for the raid. In a way he knew they needed more evidence against the Shie Hassaikai, and he really didn't want Overhaul to slip through the cracks once again. Nighteye doesn't want anyone else to go through what Bubble Girl did if Overhaul's operation continues. The risk he was willing to take was to obtain criminating evidence within the compound to make it difficult for Overhaul to escape charges even if the evidence was taken by questionable means.
Omnipotent X: True, Eri has been sheltered and hasn't seen much outside of the compound unless she goes outside for little treats with Kai, Pops, or one of the Shie Hassaikai members. The big difference on the Stockholm theory produced by the heroes were their miscalculation of Kai's feelings about her, and they are going to be in for a shock.
cxmgamingKR2: You are right on the heroes having no justifiable evidence to enter the compound. Sure, they have speculations from unrelated crimes that can question the integrity of the Yakuza. But there's really nothing that gives them a solid reasoning to enter their property, and their reasoning all falls under this "hostage" situation of Eri being endangered for a police raid. You do have a point of there being a conflicting view of defining Eri with Stockholm Syndrome. Yes, she is lacking in outside experience from society and her perspective of that world is heavily influenced by Kai's views on it. But like you had said, she was also placed under Kai's care from Pops and everyone in the Yakuza are aware of his role. Many heroes are going to regret any run ins with Overhaul so stay tuned for that!
Chapter 13 Rewind
Overhaul pressed them forward as the roof of the tunnels above them were caving in from the fighting above ground with the first level of tunnels. Shit. Before we can even reach the surface, we might be buried alive.
He had Eri on his hip with one of his arms holding her as his other hand was in the ready to defend them. They were striding in silence as the fighting rang all around them, the tunnels shook from the assaults cracking the structure. Overhaul put his hand on the wall to reconstruct the tunnel to halt it from collapsing on them.
Kurono had his gun drawn anticipating an attack to come from any direction as the fighting seemed to lessen, "Let me take Eri." Kurono gazed at him in concern seeing how Overhaul has been putting more effort in stabilizing the structure around them while carrying the little girl to his side.
Overhaul shook his head, "Not until we are out of the tunnel and away from the heroes that want to take her. I can't have her be taken."
Kurono sighs, "Don't overexert yourself because you feel like I couldn't handle getting her out on my own."
Overhaul narrowed his eyes, "It's a precaution, besides I only need one hand and you can shoot whoever comes our way."
Eri hugged her arms around his shoulders as she glanced worriedly at him, "Are you getting tired because you're carrying me? I can walk –."
Overhaul glanced at her reassuringly, "I'm fine. I was hoping the men would buy us more time, but everything is going more quickly than I predicted." Eri frowns at him seeing him glare ahead to examine the damage to work around the debris. He narrowed his eyes, clearing their way with ease. Overhaul hoped the Eight Bullets were able to at least diminish the raid party's numbers, it would be irritating if he had to finish their messes.
There were more explosions in the distance as if the heroes were trying to break through the living labyrinth around them. Overhaul shook his head, at this rate Mimic would run out of stamina and all those heroes and police left standing would just have to break down some walls to reach them. What a pain in the ass…
Kurono turns slightly hearing heavy breathing. Nemoto, bleeding through his mask, had Sakaski over his shoulder, "Boss…we came back like you had asked of us."
Overhaul narrowed his eyes at their state, It seems Lemillion caused them more of an issue. "Don't drag us behind, we need to get out of here."
Nemoto bowed his head, blood dripped down the beak of the mask to the floor, "Of course sir."
Eri peered around her guard detail, all of them were in different conditions. Kai was the only one that looked unscathed, but she was sure that he was getting tired with holding up the tunnels as they passed under them. Eri reached her hand out to Nemoto and Sakaski, "Let me make you feel better."
Nemoto mindfully reaches towards her noticing Overhaul's eyes narrow. Eri activated her quirk, the men felt their injuries and stamina heal as her glow illuminated them. Overhaul scowls at her, "Enough, we are healed."
Eri winced as she deactivated her quirk with difficulty, she gasped as a pain shot through her from her horn. Overhaul stared at her in concern, "You shouldn't use your quirk that recklessly, especially with this many people near your effect range."
Eri nods feeling slightly exhausted. Sakaski became conscious once more and Nemoto gave Eri a head pat, "Thanks for that. Don't worry about anything else, we can handle it."
She felt her eyes get heavy from the exhaustion. Eri nods again leaning her head on Kai's shoulder, he could feel her shift onto him more. He put his other arm around her to support her from leaning away from him when she dozes off. He would have to depend on the others to defend them. He hoped Eri wouldn't be able to stay asleep for long to help him hold her weight rather needing to support her…it would be difficult to fight.
"Come on let's go, I want her out of here. The quicker she is safe, the faster I can end this pathetic raid." Overhaul forced them to continue the path as there were more explosions behind them. He focused on his senses as they advanced further into the crumbling tunnels. Overhaul stopped in his tracks; the men followed suit on high alert. The path in front of them caved in with rubble from a fight.
Mimic had successfully separated all his captives into rooms with one of the Eight Bullets and or traps before he came down from his high. Before he blacked out, he was able to crush most of the captives that fell through the tunnels, the ones left standing were bloodied and bruised by the time Trigger wore off. Mimic grins blankly at his success as his eyes rolled back in his head and collapse.
When the dust settled from the fallen ceiling, Overhaul narrowed his eyes recognizing the other brat from the alleyway. The green haired boy was bleeding heavily from his arm, while the two other heroes with him didn't look like they were in the best shape either.
At least Mimic was able to diminish their numbers… Overhaul backed up slightly as his three men stood before him. Overhaul clutched Eri's sleeping form more firmly to his chest in case he would have to move quickly.
Recovering for the daze, the green haired boy looked their way spotting Overhaul with the unconscious little girl, "Eri!"
Overhaul scowls seeing the boy's concerned expression, "Get the filth away from us."
The three men broke off sprinting towards the three heroes. Overhaul took off his glove slamming his hand to the wall to make another exit, he narrowed his eyes when his quirk didn't activate. His gold eyes fell on the man with long black hair and a scarf, Erasure Head, what a pain…
Nemoto and Sakaski were busy dealing with the green haired brat, while Kurono was making fast work with the Lock Hero. Erasure Head ran at Overhaul, Kurono noticed and was able to stab Erasure with his quirk to slow the man's movements.
Overhaul kicked Erasure away from him, his hands occupied to not startle Eri awake. Overhaul scowled as he kneeled down to support Eri with his knee as he hunched over to slam a hand to the ground multiple times until Erasure was unable to keep his quirk going. When his quirk finally activated again, he sent spikes towards the hero's way. Sending the hero back into the wall with blood seeping from the new wounds.
Kurono restrained Erasure Head to the ground, knowing the pro would be their main issue as he stabbed the man for a second time to keep him functioning at a snail pace.
Deku grunted as he felt off balance by Sakaski's quirk and he felt sick as he forced his body to dodge the incoming attacks from Nemoto's handgun. The two Shie Hassaikai members tag-teamed the boy with throwing knives at his weakened state. Deku wobbles as he tried to keep his footing as he avoided the projectiles. Nemoto activated his quirk, "What are you really doing here? You turned away once, why not do it again?"
Deku felt his body freeze up, "I couldn't live with myself if I let Eri go back to this place and she endures more torture." Deku felt his heart racing feeling despair as he noticed Erasure Head running ahead alone towards Overhaul and Eri. I have to help…but can I?
Deku's eyes widened seeing Erasure get kicked away from Overhaul and he went down as he was subdued by another Yakuza member. Deku forced himself to snap out of it, activating his quirk to burst through Sakaski. He smashed Nemoto in the face sending the man towards Overhaul with him right on his tail.
Overhaul noticed the projectile heading towards them and he quickly dropped Eri on the ground as he caught Nemoto. He grunts as Deku came right behind Nemoto, slamming his fist to Overhaul's side just as the Yakuza boss tossed Nemoto away. Overhaul skidded from the impact; the boy was already before him attempting to get another hit in. Overhaul blocked with his arm; he felt the punch moving his body back from the strength behind it.
Overhaul glanced around the floor frantically noticing Eri a couple of feet away from him, still asleep. He ducked from another fist to cover the distance. In that instance, Overhaul moved swiftly to pick up Eri, but Deku beat him to her by kicking him in the chest. He was flung back as the boy grabbed her. Overhaul caught himself gripping the ground to prevent him from skidding further away from them.
Overhaul snarls, "Give her back!" He sent spikes towards Deku and he launched himself towards the boy. Deku strengthened his legs as he power jumped over the threat, skidded, and made a break for it with Eri in his hands. Overhaul's eyes widened, slamming his hands to reconstruct the room from any exits. There is no escape! You will not take her from me!
Eri stirred from the jerking and jumping around, she gasped meeting green eyes instead of gold. Eri wiggled in the boy's grip, the boy held onto her kicking off from the ground to try to slam his way out of the room, "Eri, we are trying to get you out safely!"
"No! Leave us alone!" Eri struggled in his grasp, Deku held onto her tightly to keep him from dropping her.
Deku winces as she attempted to break out of his grip, "I can't, we came here to make sure you are safe."
Overhaul launched himself towards them again seeing Eri thrashing to get out of the boy's grip. Overhaul reached out towards her, Eri had tears in her eyes as she leaned for him. Just before he can touch her, Deku flipped himself in midair kicking him in the face.
Overhaul was slammed into the concrete ground creating a crater of debris, Eri cried reaching for him within the hero's arms. Eri's tears slipped off her face as she watched desperately for movement – the debris deconstructed violently; she winced as her quirk activated in her distress.
Deku winced feeling her power flowing through him, he glanced down noticing the damage on his arms healing. Her quirk doesn't destroy, it heals…Was it really only Chisaki's quirk that created the bullets? Were we mistaken by it being Eri because of her scars? But why does she have scars?! Is it still okay that we are here if she wasn't involved?
Overhaul stared them down seeing Eri's quirk out of control. He can tell she was in pain by her winces each time her quirk fixed the brat's body – if she can just kill him by rewinding him too much it would easily solve their problem…But she didn't need to have another death on her conscious due to her quirk. Overhaul warned, "You better drop her kid or she will erase your existence once there is nothing more to rewind."
Deku snapped his eyes to Overhaul, "Then I will keep on destroying my body – I'm not letting her go until you are subdued!"
Overhaul snarls, "What a ridiculous gamble. You are benefiting from her pain – that's not so heroic."
Deku launched himself towards Overhaul. Deku mused, If I could just knock him unconscious then he wouldn't be able to heal himself! Eri is really upset with me hurting him, I need to end this quickly so we can diffuse this situation and get the answers we need to clear this thing up.
Overhaul shot spikes towards them; he grits his teeth. Damn it, I knew having her around would give me a disadvantage if her quirk benefited a hero with injuries… We should had brought her to the surface faster to prevent all of this! Overhaul blocked the kick, he winced feeling his bones break on the impact – Did he just get stronger? Was he holding his strength back to prevent damage to himself? He was sent flying through the wall, Overhaul cursed under his breath and gasped shutting his eyes in pain as he reconstructed his broken bones.
Eri cries seeing Kai slam into the concrete hard, "Papa!"
Overhaul's eyes flew open hearing Eri calling him papa rather her nickname for him. He gritted his teeth pushing himself up, Now I'm really pissed off. Overhaul slammed his hands down making the floor shift towards him, bringing the unconscious man to him. His eyes burned gold as he grabbed onto Nemoto, You did well Nemoto, really. I know you would willingly die for me, right?! He snarls at the hero, "You've done it now. You really think I will stand for this? Eri! Close your eyes, I'm going to get to you." Eri obeyed shutting her eyes, holding her ears, and ducking her head into the hero's shoulder as Overhaul destroyed both his and Nemoto's body and then reassembled them together.
Overhaul disregarded his paranoia with the fusion, he will not lose Eri and he will do everything in his power to get her back. His body grew another pair of arms, black veins stretched over his limbs and his mask fused in with his face opening the stitching of the plague mask –making him look like the frightening monster he was.
Deku held onto Eri as she buried her head into him unsure why Chisaki would demand for her to not look. He flinches seeing what Overhaul had become, Oh shit… Deku stared at the monster in horror as its eyes glared at him with a fierce gold.
The monster's voice spoke harshly, "I'll be taking Eri back now!" Overhaul slammed the four hands down on the ground erupting the spikes towards them.
Will he really risk hitting her?! He wasn't sure if Chisaki lost his rational mind once he turned into that form. Deku noticed before Chisaki would send spikes while launching himself towards them to better control where the attack would hit as he got closer. But this attack was chaotic, it was faster and stronger than the previous ones. Deku tossed Eri away from danger, he winced as he was too slow to prevent the spikes from slicing into him.
Overhaul's enflamed eyes watched the boy toss her carelessly just as the boy got scathed by the attack. He slammed a hand to clear her area to make sure she hit flat ground. His attention went back to the boy as she hit the ground.
Eri gasped hitting the ground hard. To her relief, her quirk manifested a way to even rewind any damage she had endured when no one was in her effect range. She breathed evenly as the pain subsided.
Overhaul sneers at the boy, "You lost your advantage kid! Now I don't need to hold back to kill you!" Overhaul slammed his four arms down on the ground launching attacks at every angle.
He was holding back?! Deku winces as he forced his body to smash the concrete stakes. He gasped in surprise as the ones he broke only reconstructed themselves to lash out at a different angle. Deku felt his arms aching from using One for All at a higher percentage without Eri healing the damage. I misjudged him…
Eri opened her eyes as she was comfortable to sit up from the ground, she stared at Kai in horror seeing the monster he had become to protect her. Her eyes filled up in tears, I made him become that… she tried to calm herself down to deactivate her quirk. But the guilt of forcing Kai to take up that form caused her to be more distraught. Eri felt the ground below her shift, she fell on her back as the ground moved her towards Overhaul.
Overhaul kept bombarding the boy with attacks as his fourth hand shifted the ground where Eri was towards him, he noticed the tears in her eyes. He looked away from her as his free arm held her to his back. The other three hands didn't hold back with the relentless assaults as the boy smashed his way scathed with his attempts to run towards them. Overhaul could feel Eri's quirk still active, he gritted his teeth, "Eri, turn it off."
Eri clutched onto his furry hood, "I can't, I'm sorry!"
He felt himself defusing, he smashed his hands forcing a thick wall in-between them and the boy. Eri slid off his back as Overhaul shuddered as he tried to keep the form. Overhaul gasped as he felt himself fall apart from Nemoto, he breathed out a heavy breath with the violent rewind. His body twitched in agony, Eri stared at him bawling seeing him wince from her quirk. He took strangled breaths as the remnants of Nemoto left him leaving only him being rewound. He gave her a pained, but reassuring look as he weakly reached out and destroyed her horn cutting the quirk completely off then mending it back whole. He breathed out exhaustedly clutching her to him as she bawled into his chest horrified by almost destroying him.
He leaned his head onto hers as she cried harder. Overhaul took another deep inhale, "I'm okay, I stopped it just in time."
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry for everything!" Eri cries, crunching up his shirt into her little fists.
Overhaul rubs her back; he could hear the boy pounding the wall that separated them. He winces picking her up, "I need to get you out of here." Overhaul was starting to feel his body slowly recover from the rewind; he needed to keep up his stamina if any other hero came their way. He opened up the passageway from debris, then shut the entrance behind them to create some barriers away from the boy that was determined to get through.
Deku yells pounding into the thick wall Overhaul and Eri hid behind, blood dripped from his wounds as he punched the wall again. No! They are getting away! The wall barely had a dent in it, Deku hit the wall frustratedly.
Kurono held onto Erasure Head dragging the hero away from the boy who was too distracted by the wall Overhaul created to escape. Good, Kai should be able to get out now with Eri. Kurono noticed Sakaski slowly getting up from his beating from earlier. The two Yakuza members backtracked into the collapsed room, there was some lower-level members and police officers groaning in pain.
Deku hit the wall again, Without Chisaki and Eri this investigation is ruined and I let them get away! He fell to his knees defeatedly, he blankly looked around him seeing the room in complete disarray. His eyes widened noticing the two Yakuza members and Erasure Head were gone, "Aizawa-sensei!" Deku forced his feet to run as he followed the blood trail towards the room he fell through earlier. You won't get away!
The walls of the room fell away, Kurono whipped his head around as recovery parties broke through the room, Shit, there goes that. "Sakaski, are you up for round two?"
Sakaski chuckled tiredly chugging down his flask and pulled out more of his throwing knives, "Oh yeah."
Eri could hear his breathes becoming more even as he recovered from her quirk. Eri leaned her head on his shoulder and whispered, "What about the others?"
Overhaul sighs, forcing the tunnel to hold itself together as they passed, "For now they would need to hold their own. Once I get you to Pops, I will go back and help them."
Eri held him tighter. She was the reason he was abandoning them; they needed his help but he was putting her first. I'm sorry everyone, please stay safe.
He sighed in relief seeing the passageway leading to stairs, Finally…
"Chisaki, stand down."
Overhaul froze seeing Pops being forced down the steps with Nighteye clutching his shoulder with a support weapon to his neck. "Stand down or are you willing to cause another dead parent?"
Overhaul narrowed his eyes, "You know nothing about me."
The raid is slowly coming to its conclusion! What are your thoughts on this chapter and where you think it's heading? I would love to hear your thoughts on the Deku vs Overhaul fight and Eri's emotional turmoil during it.
Next chapter we get flashbacks with the title of "Cold Case" to find out what exactly happened...
