Chapter Nine: My Wand, My Trunk, and Leaving Japan
Waking up with a stretch and yawn, I see that Yumi is already awake and basking in the morning sun next to an open window.
"Enjoying yourself?" I ask with a chuckle as my friend and familiar lay languid by the window, the golden rays a contrast to her vantablack body, though the faint dark green between her scales showing a slight highlight as well.
"Immensely" she responded with a lazy hiss, her comfort readily apparent to me, making me smile wider at her.
Seeing that she was quite happy where she was, I went and put on a loose-fitting white cotton yukata before opening the shoji sliding door, requesting some breakfast from the proprietor. After waiting for a bit, I enjoyed a very nice morning meal of mackerel, rice with natto on top, some miso soup, and a lovely cup of green tea.
After finishing up my meal I asked the inn owner if I could rent the room for the rest of the day, that way I could bring my packages back throughout the day in preparation for my new trunk. After paying a few bronze knuts, the room was mine for today and tomorrow, and I headed out to the wand store first, having thrown on my black yukata, Yumie merging back into me as I leave.
Enjoying the crisp morning that had a nice but slight biting chill I made my way back to 'Yamamoto's Wands' as the golden hues of the morning sky fled as the sun began to fully take hold.
Making sure that the store was open and finding that, yes it was, I head inside, excitement electrifying my spine, curious to see how my wand will have turned out and finding out why witches and wizards treasure their wands so much. Even Voldemort highly valued his wand, seeing it as a part and extension of himself, only looking for a new wand when his couldn't beat Harrys.
I may never want to be reliant on my wand in regards to being able to use my magic and I will do my best to make sure I stay true to that, but nonetheless, it should be a powerful tool to have in my arsenal.
Heading inside the shop I find Yusuke Yamamoto, the wand maker, at the front cleaning the counter before he pauses when he sees me.
"Master Yamamoto, I hope you've had a good morning" I greet him with a bow.
"Good morning Ms. Elizabeth, and yes, my morning has been good, thank you for asking. Also yes, I do have your wand ready" he replies, a small bow in return and a wide smile as well.
"Great!" I exclaim with a smile of my own, my excitement taking hold of me with a jolt, bring a chuckle out from the man in front of me, a bit to my embarrassment. But hey, I'm young, I can ignore some of the more common and at times stoic formalities, at least I think so.
I head up to the counter as he heads to the back, going to grab my wand, and he comes back holding a black box similar to what I remember from Ollivanders from the films. After opening the box, he reveals my wand making my breath hitch at the work and beauty of his creation, my respect for his work rising to new heights.
The wand he reveals looks very similar to a stiletto dagger, the blade or main body of the wand tapering into a triangular section and sharp point. The lower half of the wand has a turned ricasso, and hilt/handle having short turned quillons exquisitely carved into the wand, with each ball skillfully chiseled with foliage and ball-cherry-blossom-flowers. The wand was finished in some tung oil it seems, bring out the wood grain from the light-colored wand.
Looking at the wand I look up to Master Yamamoto, "just from sight alone I can tell this was masterfully made and a phenomenal work of art, and you have my sincerest compliments for your work" I say, my voice heavy with emotion, honesty painting my words.
Giving me a bow and a proud smile, "Thank your Ms. Elizabeth, I am proud to have worked on a cherry wood wand once again, especially such a combination of magical wood and cores. Thank you for the opportunity to create such a wand for you" he says, giving me another, slightly deeper, bow this time.
"Your master and skill undoubtedly shows through your creation, though if I may ask, did you have any troubles along the way?" I ask, curious if the magical cherry wood caused him problems at all.
"Ah yes, haha, I learned when working with the wood that I had to make sure I made complete cuts into the wood, fully removing the pieces I had in mind, or the wood had a tendency to heal back up. It rather amazed me honestly, even if it made working with the wood more difficult" he informed me.
The information came as a bit of a surprise, because while I knew the original Sakura tree had strong healing capabilities, I didn't expect the removed branch to keep those abilities.
He soon continued, breaking me out of my contemplation "another interesting aspect of the wood was it became harder and harder to carve into as I worked to the point of actually had to enchant my tools to help me finish the final wand after I bounded the cores into it. I can tell you now that your wand should be very hard to break, and as long as it's not completely destroyed, it should be able to self-repair. Again, it was great to create such a unique wand, thank you for the opportunity Ms. Elizabeth. Now we just have to see how well it's bonds to you" he said.
"No, thank you Master Yamamoto for your hard work and you masterful display of skill" I say with a smile before holding out my left hand, happy that I'm ambidextrous.
When he places the wand in my hand I feel an immediate connection to my wand, much more than a tool like I thought, but like an old friend to me and my magic, feeling the wand and my magic seamlessly connect to each other. Gripping the handle of the wand, the shadows in the shop seem to darken, a pitch-black void that seems to crawl toward me, hungry and grasping. I hear its whispers, so dark and alluring, welcoming me into their embrace, as the shadows crawl forward and up my body, holding me close like a loved one.
But then it all seems to shift, the shadows retreating, not in fear but more in respectful acquiesce to an equal and light fills the shop, a beacon to the once crawling darkness. I feel it and understand, we complete each other, me and my wand, and she will take my magic and make it roar!
I hold true to the belief that I will never solely rely on my wand alone, being able to do everything my wand will let me do, but I understand this connection so many witches and wizards cherish. I know my wand will be loyal to me and me alone, follow me through the pains and joys of life, and take what magic I do and magnify it further.
Coming out of my daze after connecting with my wand I see the pure shock and awe of Master Yamamoto over the showing of me connecting with my wand. Unlike in the UK, Japan doesn't have the unthinking hatred of Dark magic or idolism of Light magic, understanding it's the actions of the person and what they do that matters. So, such a showing of Dark and Light received awe and respect from him, rather than fear or hatred, though shock at the strength.
"Truly an incredibly strong connection and bond with your wand already. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see such a sight. It was an honor taking part in the of such a wand, truly, the world will shack at whatever path you take Ms. Elizabeth" he says, giving me a deep bow.
"Thank you, Master Yamamoto, truly" I say, giving a deep bow in return, incredibly happy with my new wand. After buying a wand holster for a few sickles, made from dragon hide, having an anti-summoning charm, a notice me not charm and a charm to shoot the wand into my hand, I left the store with a wide smile.
ΩΩΩ
After I left the store with my wand holster, Yumie peeked out form my yukata, informing me that the connection to my wand helped her as well, embowering her connection to the darkness and shadow. Whereas before she would blend into shadow, see through shadow, and travel through it, that was when she wasn't merged with me. Now, with both our deeper connections, she can do all that while we are merged, increasing her attack potential, making us both rather happy with that.
Regardless of the small power-up, I still had some shopping to do in preparation for getting my new portable home in a trunk.
For my tea compartment I went to a store and bought a few different teapots, such as a tetsubin (cast iron) teapot, a HÔhin pot, a clay Yokade kyusu (side-handle pot), an English teapot with an infuser, and even a matcha set with a bowl, bamboo whisk, and bamboo scoop. Basically, I made sure I was ready for any occasion when having tea with others, and that I could make tea for myself whenever I wanted as well.
I also bought a selection of Japanese, Chinese, and even a few English loose-leaf teas, since variety is always nice. A verity of teacups that matched each style of pot also made sure to make its way into my list of purchases at that shop as well. All of it fit into a single box with an expansion charm and a weightlessness cham.
A shop that was close by the tea shop had the more mundane usual cookware for my new home as well, the more Japanese style of cookware obviously. A small grill for fish, an enchanted rice cooker for always perfect rice, various pans and pots, a woke, and plenty sharp knives for the collection.
A very nice sushi set was also a great purchase, going well with the bento boxes and thermos that both had stasis charms on them. Making sure to grab some regular plates and cups finished off my purchases at that store. Heading to the food store nearby, I was able to stock up on all the necessities for food as well, all of it under a stasis charm lasting until tomorrow.
Taking all of this to my room at the end, I stored it for later for when I could start stocking it inside my new Steamer trunk. All of this together knocked off about another three galleons from me, leaving me with a hundred-and-ninety left, with one-hundred-and-fifty set to the side for the trunk. Now I just need to start getting supplies for my other trunk compartments and and few things for my new home.
As for the bar compartment, not even I could tell a good enough of a lie to be able to stock up that part of my trunk just yet, but this is when I just worked smarter and not harder, I cheated.
After I had everything stored away, I used the provided ink and brush to tell my grandfather how I was doing, about my new wand, and mentioned my new trunk as well. I also made sure to mention that I planed to move the Sakura tree so no one else could stumble across it, and to just let me know if he ever needed any more petals.
Seeing as he knows about my strong regeneration and magic, and he does love his alcohol, I asked him to send me his favorite selection of sake, scotch, whisky, and beer that I could us to fill out my bar compartment. In return I mentioned where I got my new trunk, and that he could pick up his own expanded bar trunk that could shrink and enlarge with a voice password, paid for by me.
All he had to do when he got it all together would be to leave a reply note in his box telling me he's ready and leave the open box and the alcohol in a shadowed area for me to find and summon.
Sending off the letter through the shadows and into his box, all I could do for now was some more shopping as I waited for his response. Considering what I was waiting for, I went to another shop and bought some various glasses for alcohol, making the proprietor a bit suspicious in the process.
After about an hour of looking around I found some cups that I liked and that fit what I had in mind; some o-choko (small cups), guinomi (large cups), sakazuki (flat cups), masu (wood box cups), Glencairn glasses, and some snifer glasses as well. I was very happy with the quality of everything I found, though all totaled it cost me another two galleons considering the quality of it all.
After stopping of at the tobacco store and getting a few pounds of my previous blends; Mornings Start, Afternoon Delight, Days End, and a few more bags of Captain Black Royal, I headed back to my room at the end. A bit mentally tired from all the shopping and knowing I had more to do, I took a break and spent the next hour by the window, puffing leisurely on my clay pipe, smoking some of the Royal tobacco.
It was when I was near the end of my second bowl when I was alerted to a note from grandfather's letter box, causing me to feel out the location, take a look, and summon a giant stash of alcohol bottles, three of each kind. The note on top of the pile just told me to enjoy, that he was happy things were going well for me, and that he would be by in a week to pick up his new trunk, which he thanked me for.
He made sure to get some very good alcohol of course, with things like Hakkaisan Tokubetsu sake, Twenty-six-year-old Lagavulin Scotch, and even some aged Ogden's Old Firewhisky and some Butterbeer. Obviously very happy with the wide selection of alcohol, I made sure to store it in the corner for later, a wide smile on my face and very thankful for my rather morally flexible grandfather.
Heading out again, my next big expenditure was for my potions lab, making sure it was fully stocked according to the woman running the store. I might not know much about potions yet, but I wanted to make sure I was prepared for anything I might need, since the knowledge could help in resurrecting my mother later.
In the end I dopped another twenty galleons alone on potion ingredients, enough to fill out the supply closet for a Master at potions, all the ingredients packaged separately and then stored in another space expanded box with the usual stasis charm on top.
The cauldrons were another ten galleons, all four of them; a pewter one for the slowest brewing, a brass one that brewed even faster, and a copper one that was for a very experienced potion master since it brewed the fastest of all three basic cauldrons.
The last two cauldrons were specialty ones, a silver one and a jade one. The silver cauldron was for very magically potent potions or to increase to potency of normal potions, but because of all the added magic, it brewed extremely fast, so you had to be a master at the potion being made. The Jade cauldron was the most expensive one, and brewed at a similar pace to the silver cauldron, providing a similar effect but with a focus on health oriented potions, and brewed using a magical flame.
After finishing the hour-long process of filling out my future potions lab I made a quick stop to a music store to pic up a record player with some classical music records, Japanese music, opera, and some music from America like Frank Sinatra. After which I made another stop to my room at the inn to make another drop off before heading out to shop for a few things for the dojo.
For my dojo compartment, being that I already had my spear, I didn't need anything overly special, but I stopped by another store specializing in martial weapons for a few things I had in mind. One of the first things I bought was a selection of sharpened throwing knives that could be hidden on my body, about six to hide and I bought another six as spares.
The next thing I bought was a new and specialty fitted bow with its own enchantments, which was a small Mongolian recurve bow with a forty-pound draw weight, very happy for my deceptive amount of strength for my size, further helped by my chi.
The enchantments on the bow allowed it to conjure an arrow when magic is channeled into it, an arow with a needle bodkin arrowhead. The bow could also be shrunk down and attacked onto a charm bracelet or belt when not being used, though I plan to have it stored in my dojo since I can summon it when I need to.
While my magic can cover a lot of problems, it also isn't the best for long range combat.
When I silence the bow, I can use it later for when I need to hit an enemy from a distance, my magic being able to cover mid to close range attacks easily enough.
When I expand my spell repertoire further and learn to mix dueling with my unarmed, claw, and spear combat, my mid and close-range attacks will be even deadlier, let alone my assassination attacks when needed. All this together ran me another eight galleons because of the specialty enchantments for the bow and because it was a special made bow rather than a traditional yumi bow.
My last stop before picking up my trunk was probably going to drain my remaining spending money even more, and that was to start filling up my library trunk.
ΩΩΩ
Ultimately my search for a variety of magical tomes turned out to be highly interesting and incredibly worthwhile, mainly due to fact that the Shinto religion has been around for thousands of years, influencing the magical population as well. Taking the concept that that kami, or spirts/souls inhabit all things, the direction of Japanese magic has a strong focus on the spiritual side of things and soul magic, while also taking on modern western concepts as well.
Evolving from early onmyōdō magic, I found books pertaining to dispelling weak wards, Exorcism that had basic and advanced books, also many basic to advanced books on Elemental magic as well, and various books on curses, rituals, and sealing magic as well. All of these were a treasure trove for me to study later, building up a foundation of esoteric and deadly spells.
There were even some interesting tomes on how to use magic through music, using both the sound and emotion of a song to help empower and shape a spell. While this may not be the most useful for me by in large, it could lead to some fun uses, and maybe a way to embower allies in the future or try out large scale attacks. Again, while not my first choice in a battle, it's always great to have options.
There were even tomes of magic pertaining to the souls of objects, and alchemy books on disassembling the concept of those object souls or transferring them. Getting the basic books all the way to the mastery books on both the souls of objects and the alchemy with those souls should help me a lot. One in making future plans for Voldemort's horcruxes, and maybe even being able to transfer my mother's soul from me into another object that I can better protect.
After buying all these books as well as books on Japanese potions, the use of ofuda to make temporary but strong wards, Japanese mental protection techniques using the concept of understanding the kami of an element, and various levels of books concerning spirt magic, I had over a hundred books bought, finishing off another hundred galleons. After they were all stored in a shrunken box, I had to admit I was more than happy with what I found, even if I only had fifty-four galleons left of spending money, the rest still on hold to pay for the trunk.
ΩΩΩ
Though speaking of my trunk, I can see it on the counter with another trunk that I assume is my library chest, with the locks being a bit less ornamental. Seeing the proprietor I approached him with a happy smile, excited to see how the creation of both trunks went.
"Hello sir, how did everything go?" I ask, hoping no issues happened to crop up.
He smiled, maybe seeing a bit of my worry, "worry not", he definitely saw some of my worry, "everything went fine, and both your home Steamer trunk and library trunk are ready, just put a drop of blood on each and say the password you have in mind" he explains with a smile.
Nodding, I move to my Steamer trunk first, using the tip of my wand to prick my finger, gaining a drop of blood while the wound quickly heals. Putting the drop of blood on the trunk I quickly feel its connection to me, though my magical sensitivity may help a lot with that.
Thinking about a password for my trunk, I know it doesn't have to be something incredibly complex but still has to be difficult and not easily guessed, and the perfect thing occurs to me, switching to Parseltongue "Harry Potter and Thanos" I hiss out. Two names that would occur to no one and even if one name does, both together would be incredibly improbable to occur to someone.
Looking at the proprietor I can see that he both surprised and impressed by my use of Parseltongue, but I just give him a small smile before moving to the library chest.
Using my wand to prick my finger again I feel another connection after placing the drop of blood on the trunk, and this time I decide to go with a Gandalf quote in Parseltongue, ""Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
Happy with both passwords I look to the shop proprietor again, switching back to Japanese, "thank you very much for all the work you put into both these trunks" I say with a bright smile and a bow.
"You're welcome, would you like to check through the trunks here or later?" he asks.
"I have faith in your work, and I am going to start filling both trunks up very soon, so if any issues do come up, I can quickly come back" I say, figuring that he's earned his good reputation.
"Thank you very much for your faith and patronage" he says with a smile of his own and a bow.
"Actually, I would like to make another order to be picked up by someone else later, around a week from now, would that be possible?" I ask.
"Perfectly possible, though I would need a name and description of the person, what kind of trunk do you have in mind?" he asks, keeping his air of professionalism.
"Great!" I say with a bright and happy smile, once more my age coming through because of my excitement, "I would like another fully expanded trunk like my library, with voice command shrinking and enlarging charms, and the full protection package again." I tell him, wanting to make sure my grandfather gets the best. "And his name is Izo, he an elderly man who wears dark glasses and is blind, but don't worry, he'll find this place easily enough" I let him know.
"All of that is perfectly fine, and since you have been such a great customer, I'll give you a discount, so the trunk cost will be thirty galleons instead of the usual fifty, being that you've already spent three-hundred galleons here" he says with a bright smile.
"Thank you very much sir, that will help a lot" I tell him. Paying him the rest of what I owe and the money for my grandfather's trunk, I give a final parting bow and head back to the inn.
For the next few hours, I make sure to organize everything I bought into the trunk, which turned out perfectly, with everything being easily organized and the home beautiful.
After finishing up I have the rest of my money, all twenty-four galleons of it, exchanged at the local goblin bank, keeping aside a few sickles for later, gaining 91,896 yen, or 600 pounds.
After which I shadow travel to a Japanese bookstore District my grandfather told me about, Jimbocho in Tokyo, which has 150 to 180 bookstores. Spending the next few hours there I fill up my personal home library with a variety of genres, from Romance books, light novels, Sci-fi, Epic Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, to yuri novels. All of which have include any completed or up to date series so that I can spend time inside my personal library to relax with a good book, outside of studying magic, which is still amazing.
Lastly, as the sun began to fall from the sky, painting the sky in gold in preparation of the moons silver light, I shadow traveled to my magical Sakura tree. Looking up at it I can't help but still find it breath taking in its beauty and vibrancy, and I well into the night I take my time to carefully move it from its resting place, into my trunk, the space enlarging as I move it inside.
I place it in the central section of my karesansui garden, where there is a circular plot of land I had the trunk maker put it, with dragon dunk enriched soil. Taking my time, I plant the tree inside the plot of land, watching it come alive and take root even further, looking as healthy as before. Making a cut on my palm with my wand, I bleed a bit into the soil, helping enrich it with my own magic and healing once again, the cut healing a second after.
Smiling at all I accomplished, I leave my trunk and shrink it, keeping both inside a pocked within my yukata, seeing the nighttime world around me bathed in silver light. Looking around the place I lived for the last four years, I let lose a sigh of melancholy because its time to leave and start making plans for the battles ahead.
Once more I step into shadow, leaving the silver lit world behind, parting from Japan after four years, and heading back into the stagnant and corrupt world of magical Britain, off to rent a room at the Leaky Cauldron.
