Chapter 6: Punishment

Before church, Cal, Rose, Cato, and I were at our private deck, having breakfast. Once the maids had left, Cal spoke up. "You and Lana didn't come to me last night," Cal said. "I was tired," Rose said. "So was I," I said. "Your exertions below deck were no doubt exhausting," Cal said. "I see you had that undertaker of a manservant follow me," Rose said. "You will never behave like that again," Cal said. "You will never behave like how you behaved again last night Lana," Cato said.

"I'm not one of your mill foremen who you can command. I'm your fiancee'." Rose said. I felt scared, but I tried to be brave. "And I am not something you can command too, Cato. I am your wife. Not some dog you can order around." I said. "You tell 'em, Lana," Rose said. Cato grew angry, so did Cal. I held onto Rose's hand tightly. Cal whispered quietly but his voice got louder.

"My Fiancee', My fiancee' Yes, you are! And my wife!" Cal yelled as he flipped the table over with his hand. Rose and I screamed. "Yes, you are my wife, Lana!" Cato roared. Cal leaned into Rose. "My wife in practice, if not yet by law, so you will honor me! You will honor me the way a wife honors her husband because I will not be made a fool of. Is this in any way unclear?" Cal said in a firm voice. "Good. Excuse me." Cal said and walked away. When Cal walked away, Cato looked at me angrily. "You will never behave towards me the way you just did, am I understood?" Cato said as he glared at me.

Looking into his eyes was scary because they were cold and unforgiving. "I am not gonna be ordered around anymore, Cato!" I yelled. Cato grew even angrier with me, grabbed my chair, and threw me onto the ground. "Lana!" Rose cried.

"YOU ARE MY WIFE LANA! YOU ARE TO HONOR ME AND OBEY ME!" Cato roared. He grabbed me roughly by the arms and shook me violently as he was yelling at me. "Am I in any way unclear?" Cato said in a low growl. I was too scared to answer him. He got impatient with me and shocked me. "No, no it's not unclear," I said, shakily. "Good. Don't let this happen again and you are grounded for a week. Now if you'll excuse me." Cato said.

Cato gave me a kick as he left. Rose ran up to me and helped me up. "Are you okay?" Rose said. "Yes mommy, I think so," I said. The maid quickly walked inside the room. "Oh, Miss. Rose, Miss. Lana." The maid said as she bend down. "We had a little accident," Rose said. She was also still shaken up from what had happened. "That's all right." The maid said. "I'm sorry. Let me help you." Rose said. "I'm sorry, I didn't know my husband would do that, here let me help you too," I said and Rose and I began helping the maid clean up the mess our husbands have made. "It's all right miss." The maid said. Rose and I fell back and sobbed as the maid comforted us.

After we got back from the private deck, I went to my room and got dressed for church. I got on my purple dress with a light purple lining on the bottom. I got my make-up on, did my hair, got some short gloves on, and walked out of my room to meet my family for church. "I'm ready to go," I said. "Oh my god Lana, your face," Katniss said. "There is nothing wrong with my face, mom," I said. "Yeah, your face is scratched up, what happened?" Katniss asked.

"Oh, uh...uh...It's nothing, just don't worry about it." I said. "You can tell us you know," Finch said. "I'm fine!" I snapped. "Let's just go," I said. I stormed off, walking to church alone, not wanting to deal with my family asking me about what happened. When I got to church, I met up with my family and we got our lyrics sheet and we sang a song at the beginning of the service. After church, Rose, Ruth, and I were talking to the captain of the ship, Captain Smith.

Ruth was asking questions about the Titanic. "Why are there two steering wheels?" Ruth asked. "We use this one near shore." Captain Smith replied. "Excuse me, sir. Another ice warning, from the Noordam." A man said as he walked up to us. "Thank you, Sparks." Captain Smith said. "Not to worry. Quite normal for this time of year. In fact, we're speeding up. I've ordered the last boilers lit." Captain Smith said as he smiled at us.

We walked with Mr. Andrews and the family around the deck of the Titanic. "Mr. Andrews...Forgive me. I did the sum in my head. And the number of lifeboats times the capacity you mentioned. It seems there aren't enough for everyone on board." Rose said, concerned.

"About half, actually. Rose, you miss nothing, do you? In fact, I put these new type davits which can take an extra row of boats inside this one. But it was thought by some the deck would look too cluttered. I was overruled." Mr. Andrews said.

"It's a waste of deck space as it is on an unsinkable ship," Cal complained. "Sleep soundly young Rose. I have built you a good ship, strong and true. She's all the lifeboats you need. Just keep heading aft. The next stop will be the engine room." Mr. Andrews said. Jack then pulled Rose and I aside into the gym room. "Daddy?" I said. "Jack, this is impossible. Lana and I can't see you. Come on Lana." Rose said as she took my hand and pulled me away from him.

"I need to talk to you," Jack said. "No Jack, no. Jack, I'm engaged. I'm marrying Cal. I love Cal. And, I'm sorry but, you can't adopt Lana anymore." Rose said. "But why mommy?" I cried. "You know mother won't let us," Rose said. "Rose...Your no picnic. All right? You're a spoiled little brat even. But under that, you're the most amazingly, astounding, wonderful girl, woman that I've ever known. And..." Jack started but Rose cut him off. "Jack I..." Rose started and was about to turn away but Jack had stopped her. "No, let me try and get this out. You're amaz...I am not an idiot. I know how the world works.

I've got ten bucks in my pocket. I have nothing to offer, you and I know that. I understand. But I'm too involved now. You jump, I jump, remember? I can't turn away without knowing you and Lana will be all right. That's all I want." Jack said. "Well, Lana and I are fine. We will be fine, really." Rose said. "Really?" Jack said. "I don't think so. They've got you and Lana trapped, Rose. And you're gonna die if you don't break free. Maybe not right away because you're strong. But sooner or later, that fire I love about you Rose, that fire is gonna burn out." Jack said.

"It's not up to you to save me, Jack," Rose said. "You're right. Only you can do that." Jack said. "I'm going back. Leave me and Lana alone." Rose said.

With that, Rose and I had left the room.
