Incandescence

…Chapter 16…

Coup D'état

-.x.-

Preparations have been made for the Uchiha Clan to move to their latest location, which was the outskirts of Konoha – where they would be far away from the center, and pushed to a corner to facilitate the government's watchful eye on them. On the surface, it would seem that Konoha had regained its stability, and all the plans that were set will aid the village in prospering like it did before the Tailed Beast's attack.

However, little did any of the civilians and villagers know that deep down, the security and stability that the Hokage and the governing body have worked so hard to re-establish, has been shaken once more.

It was overwhelming for the Uchiha; because while they had no choice but to accept the move, they roamed around agitated and nervous, waiting in anticipation for Fugaku and the Hokage to formulate a better solution.

However, as time went by… hope was declining. They did not want to cling onto any false illusion of Konoha and the Uchiha Clan burying the hatchet and restoring a peaceful relationship.

Not after being pushed off to the side twice. Not after being reminded of how they are still mistrusted and discriminated against.

The only silver lining so far was that the Hokage and other Clan Heads sided with Fugaku's revulsion about the entire decision. It was simply the recent rumors which were spread around that corrupted their reputation in the village. At least the Clan Heads like Nara Shikaku, Yamanaka Inoichi, and Akimichi Choza knew who the Uchiha Clan were and did not allow the rumors to corrupt their views. Understandably, the other clans remained neutral, such as the Hyuuga and Aburame Clan.

However, the Uchiha Clan was just like a ticking time bomb; their resentment growing and growing as they reestablished their settlements into the new location. Will their anger be defused? Or will it lead it to a potential catastrophe?

It was only a matter of time.

-.x.-

Ever since the last assembly in the Naka Shrine, Obito's mind has been occupied with nothing but the situation of the Uchiha Clan. He was also extremely unsettled with moving to a new district. Ever since his return and full recovery, Obito had stayed away from matters that involved the Uchiha Clan. He had woken up every day telling himself he shared nothing with them except blood. Other than that, he never had a place with them. The clan members definitely helped plenty in enhancing that mindset of his, since they've done nothing but slander him over what he'd done with his Sharingan.

The only reason he joined the Konoha Military Police Force is to prove to himself and the clan his capabilities; and that with only one eye, he can be so much more powerful and not someone who can be underestimated.

It was all so ironic.

Obito did not want to be involved with the clan, but he joined the Leaf Police – a law enforcement center ran by the Uchiha Clan.

He had only been proving further and further how fearsome the Uchiha Clan can be, even with only one Sharingan – hence inflating their reputation.

He had managed to earn the respect of Uchiha Fugaku, the Uchiha Clan's leader, and in turn, he earned the respect of at least some members. There was a great honor in realizing that the clan leader has recognized his potential, and sees him as a wanted member in his elite team.

He could never forget Fugaku's words:

"You are an Uchiha. You are a part of this clan just as much as my sons are. We are an elite clan, feared and envied for our bloodline limit. So, you better wear the Uchiha name like a badge, do you understand me?"

For the first time in what felt like centuries… Obito sees himself as a true member of the Uchiha Clan. It was Fugaku who had been trying to pull him in and open his eyes to the fact that no matter what, he is still an Uchiha. He is still connected to his clan, and there was no escape from it. His views of his clan had been so clouded with resentment towards their mistreatment of him, that he forgot who had given him the opportunity since his return and recovery to thrive and walk as a true member of the Uchiha Clan – and that was Fugaku Uchiha.

Now, with the given reality, it only showed how much Obito is entirely integrated with the Uchiha's future.

The clan was facing discrimination from the governing body (this excludes the Hokage), and Obito was no one special in that sense.

The clan was relocating, and Obito's home will also change.

The Konoha Military Police Force's HQ will be driven to the farthest section of the village, and Obito will have to struggle just like the rest of his relatives with trying to maintain a shred of relevance that they have in Konoha.

And for the first time… Obito's heart ached for his clan… While their treatment towards him is inexcusable, the most important figure that represented the Uchiha, and the only one who made him feel like a true member was being torn into two – he had to suffer with maintaining diplomatic relations with Konoha, and the clan's satisfaction.

Obito knew that Fugaku had placed his faith in the Hokage, the Hokage who took the Uchiha's side and saw them as a part of Konoha, who was still negotiating the matters with the Council to reconsider revising the plans once more. Obito knew that Minato was dissatisfied with Danzo's ideas and was doing what he could to recede his influence. It was no easy task – but it's better than nothing being done at all.

One way or another, there will be a solution to the tensions that have risen amongst Konohagakure and the Uchiha Clan… but the chances of restoring peaceful relations was like a candle in the wind…

-.x.-

Obito was sitting next to Rin at Ichiraku's, poking at his half-empty bowl with his chopsticks and staring blankly, while Rin was talking to him about a crazy couple who had come to the emergency in the hospital this morning – something about a man who had a fork sticking out of his arm after a huge fight with his girlfriend.

"Honestly! Those two needed some serious couple's counseling! Who would do something like that?! Right, Obito? Eh…? Obito? Are you listening?"

"Hm?" Obito blinked twice, then turned his head to look at Rin, and lifted his lips to give her a small smile. "Oh, yeah. They should just break up if they can't get it together."

Rin's brows furrowed in worry and she placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. Obito was…not himself, and it was unnerving.

"You've been acting strange all day, Obito… What's wrong?"

Obito shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck. His smile was still stiff, and there was a distant look in his eye. "Nothing's wrong, Rin. Don't worry about it, really. I'm just not that hungry."

He then turned to face his bowl and continued to poke at the remains of his noodles. He sighed inwardly, scolding himself for letting his anxiousness seep out of him and making Rin worry. The truth is… he did not know how to tell Rin about the recent events that had been plaguing his mind. He did not know how to tell her that he'd moving away from the center of the village; and into the outskirts, or explain that the clan was being discriminated.

It's not like he was saying goodbye to her, he'd travel from the farthest side of the globe just to see her. He was lucky that his bloodline limit granted him the ability to teleport to her easily. So, it wasn't even about being unable to see her – that was out of the question; but it's just that everything was mixed between preparing to move and adjusting with new arrangements, and just…waiting to see how everything will pan out with the governing body and the Uchiha.

Rin frowned at him, and slightly nudged at his shoulder. "Don't give me that. I know something's wrong, Obito. You know you can talk to me," she told him softly, her eyes pleading and gleaming with concern.

That made his heart squeeze. One way or another, she had to know what was going on. He can't just brush it off as nothing, when clearly so many things were happening at a drastic rate.

He closed his eye for a moment and exhaled through his nose, then solemnly glanced at her.

"Alright. Not here. Let's talk somewhere private."

-.x.-

They sat by the bench where the Hokage Mansion could be seen; and Rin was staring up at Obito expectantly, while he was bent forward, leaning on his weight with his elbows on his knees, and his gaze focused on the ground while his hands were clasped together.

A few moments of silence went by, and then he sighed.

"There is no easy way to say this," he started, his lips tightening. "The government officials have made their decision about the relocation and construction of some clan compounds."

Rin blinked, but remained silent, indicating that she was listening intently.

"They're relocating my clan and the Leaf Police's HQ to the outskirts of the village. We're already in the process of moving."

Rin's eyes widened in shock; and her lips parted. Her gut clenched at the news; and she swallowed thickly.

"The…outskirts…?" she whispered, and Obito nodded his head, then finally leaned back to sit up straight, heaving out an exasperated breath and running a hand through his spikey hair then looked at her with somberly.

Rin looked away from the Uchiha beside her, her eyes downcast as she settled her gaze on her hands that were on her lap.

"That's so far away…" she muttered as she imagined how far the distance would be.

"I know," Obito said, "But we don't have a choice. Other clans have accepted their new locations, and while my clan is still trying to negotiate the matter, there is nothing that we can do but to settle down."

Rin faced Obito with a soft smile, and placed a hand on his shoulder, and this gained his attention. She looked concerned and worried, but she also wanted to try to reassure him in some way, knowing how he felt overwhelmed with the news.

"Hey, maybe it won't be that bad… have you checked out the new location?"

Obito shook his head. "No. Although, we were told that there would be lands we could occupy to use as training grounds for the Leaf Police." He said with a shrug.

"I think you should check it out," Rin suggested. "Don't you spend most of your time training? I don't think it's a bad idea to have training fields reserved for your clan, it'd make things easier for you and the Leaf Police, no?" Rin spoke, her eyes locking at his expression, hoping that in some sense, it would at least ease his nerves. But Obito only remained agonizingly silent, and his expression did not change; as though there was something deeper than it all being a matter of moving to another place.

"There is something more to this, right...?" She asked in a quiet tone, her smile fading as she waited for him to answer.

"Rin," Obito started, "I'd like to ask you something."

"Hm?"

"What do you think of the Uchiha Clan?"

Rin's eyes widened briefly at the question; before shifting her gaze from the Uchiha next to her to her lap. She wondered where was all of this coming from; Obito was clearly bothered about the whole move, but that wasn't the only reason. She couldn't understand why he asked her what she thought of the Uchiha Clan; one of Konoha's most powerful and essential clans…she knew that if it were not for the Uchiha, Konoha would not have existed in the first place. Their existence is essential to the Leaf; they are the ones who have protected the village thanks to their mighty reputation. They were considered to be Konoha's military force. However, she also did not forget that this is the same clan that had afflicted Obito for as long as she knew… the clan that Obito had tried to gain acceptance from…

That didn't mean she hated the Uchiha Clan or held any sort of resentment towards them, despite how inexcusable their actions were; but if she were in Obito's place, she wouldn't know how to handle walking amongst relatives who only looked down on you if you did not live up to their expectations. It was hard when it came from a mother and a father… but she couldn't imagine anything more painful when it is an entire family.

However, Rin was highly aware that every clan had their own values and traditions, and going against any of it will result in a lot of tribulation. Growing up in a clan, being a member of a clan adds a heavy set of expectations on one's shoulders, and she knew Obito had to struggle with all of it.

'The Uchiha Clan,' Rin thought internally to herself. 'One of Konoha's noble clans…'

"Well," she started, tucking her long, brown lock behind her ear. "I think that the Uchiha Clan is an amazing clan. I think that they must be truly respected because they have done so much for Konoha." She then looked at the Uchiha next to her. "While I do not agree with how they have treated you over the years; I don't think you can cut ties with the ones you share your blood with. One way or another, they're going to have to accept you for who you are. I think it's amazing that you are born into a clan that is not only powerful, but also highly reputable in Konoha."

It then clicked in her mind why Obito was completely disturbed with the new location – which is in the farthest part of the village. Obito seems to have realized that he has a strong connection to his clan now that he had somehow become more involved with them. He realized how significant is the entire existence of the Uchiha Clan.

Her hand reached out to rest on top of his hand, and a soft, sad smile had taken over her features.

"Obito,"

Obito slightly tensed at the sudden contact and turned his attention to her.

"I understand why you're conflicted about moving so far away… and that this may lead to certain changes for your clan, and that they have good reasons to disagree with the circumstances; but I think at this point, it is best to have faith that it will all work out."

Obito gulped and stared into her round, hazel eyes, and he was instantly reminded of the times when she would always comfort him when he felt troubled and vulnerable. Without him saying a word, she understood his problems and always knew what to say. She always knew how to ease his heart.

More importantly, what she said about the Uchiha Clan and how she acknowledged the mistreatment he faced only made his heart flicker, and a warm feeling washed over him.

This woman…

This beautiful, kind-hearted soul who always gave him the support and hope he needed. Her whole existence eased his worries and made him look towards a brighter tomorrow.

Deep in his heart, he only prayed to the gods above that one day, he could make her his forever.

He gave her hand a squeeze, and his lips quirked a small smile at her words, while his eye shone with fondness.

"Thank you, Rin."

Rin squeezed his hand back, and her smile widened, until she realized that something.

Now that Obito was moving – that could mean that...she would see him less…

She felt her heart grow heavy with a certain uneasiness. She had gotten so used to being with him when he didn't have missions or duties, and spending most of her time with her childhood best friend.

The rational side of her mind told her that this didn't mean they were going to stop seeing each other, and that Obito was not the type of person who would let that happen, yet she couldn't help but feel that certain loss...

Her smile was starting to falter, and her eyes was downcast once more. She struggled to look positive, and tried to not ask the burning question…but she couldn't help it.

She wanted to hear it from him. She wanted his reassurance that no matter what changes are coming, they would still see each other and be close.

"Obito…?"

"Yes?" the Uchiha asked; and noticing the shift in her mood, he waited for her to speak her mind.

Rin focused at anything but him. She swallowed before she spoke up.

"I know you're moving far away, and everything is happening so fast that it's hard to keep up…but this doesn't change anything between us, right…?" Her tone was meek and low, and the last part sounded like a whisper; but Obito heard her nonetheless.

His brows shot up in surprise, and his eye widened; she looked so…forlorn and nervous at the thought of not seeing him - his heart squeezed – he felt a mixture of joy and sadness swell inside him, and this sparked a determination to never let her feel like she was alone. He did not want to leave her alone – he did not want to be away from her.

He had been so happy all those times they spent together – meditating, training while she reads or studies, having lunches together, walking together… no way he would let any distance take that away from them.

"Rin…" he whispered lowly, and his hand reached out to gently cup her marked cheek and turn her face to him. Her round eyes grew wide at the sudden touch on her face, and her breath hitched when she realized how close they were, and she could feel her cheeks burn bright pink.

Obito's expression held so much intensity and genuineness as he locked his gaze with hers.

"No matter where I am, I'm always going to be there for you."

"Obito…" Rin breathed out.

A sense of relief diffused into her heart at his words, and she could just melt at his touch…the way he was so close…

A wide, reassuring smile grew on the Uchiha's lips, and his hand slowly lowered down to her shoulder. Rin did not like how cold her cheek felt in that moment.

"Don't you worry about that, alright?"

Rin nodded her head, pleased at his words and validation.

Rin then scooted closer and laid her head on his shoulder, and closed her eyes as she allowed the warmth and intimacy to engulf them.

It didn't matter that they were just friends right now, or how it may look like. Right now, it was just the two of them in their own bubble. She did not want to think about anything and just bask in the moment.

And Obito, whose form stiffened briefly as he felt her press against him, but relaxed when she laid her head and closed her eyes. He too, did not want to think of anything and just took the opportunity to revel in the feeling of the love of his life leaning against him for comfort.

Blocking out any further stressful thoughts from his mind and only thinking of Rin, Obito's eye fluttered shut and he leaned his head against hers.

-.x.-

Barricade tapes were wrapped all over the closed gates that led to the previous Uchiha compounds and Leaf Police HQ that was settled nearby the center of the village ever since Konoha's establishment. The streets within were empty and hollow, just like the houses that were abandoned now that the Uchiha's residences have moved to the new compounds. The Hokage decided to leave the district untouched and on standby until he can manage to sort out the disputes that were rising between the Konoha Council and the Uchiha Clan Elders, and the Naka Shrine would still be accessible to them.

Fugaku, the Uchiha Clan Head, remained diplomatic and allowed Minato to take matters into his hands while he tried to keep things under control from his side. Minato had assured him that until he can manage to change the minds of the Elders and reconsider their decision, the old district will remain where it is – and in the chance that things take a turn for the better, all damages will be repaired and buildings will be reconstructed.

Until then… the Uchiha Clan simply had to go with the grating flow on the pretext that it is most optimal choice for Konoha's rebuilding process.

Meanwhile, Obito was looking over a scroll that was a map of the new Uchiha District as he walked down the street that would take him to the clan's latest settlement. He frowned as he studied the map and analyzed just how far it was from the center, and he wondered how the Leaf Police would carry out their operations from then on.

He released a sigh, and put the scroll away when he realized that he'd reached the area. His eyes wandered, taking in the environment, and he realized that this was supposedly the new exclusive training grounds of the Uchiha.

The area was entirely remote and quiet; a huge lake outlined by a sea of trees and grassland – it was a little similar to the public training grounds of the village.

He walked along the side of the lake with his hands in his pockets, studying the scenery, until he felt the presence of chakra behind him, and his eye narrowed.

"I see that you've also come to check out the new place."

Obito looked over his shoulder and saw that it was Shisui Uchiha – also known as Shunshin no Shisui (Shisui of the Body Flicker), standing a few feet from him.

Shisui's lips held a friendly smile, and Obito could tell from his relative's eyes that he means no ill-will.

Obito remained aloof, turning around to fully face him, despite feeling awkward that one of his clansmen was trying to strike up a conversation with him. He's seen Shisui several times, simply offering a nod as a greeting whenever they made eye-contact. This was the first time they've spoken.

"It sure is nice and quiet," Shisui said, turning his head to look at the lake.

Obito merely shrugged and looked to the side. "I could get used to it."

"If only the clan thought that way," Shisui joked. "They're not thinking of adapting anytime soon."

Obito sighed and closed his eye. "It's obvious that you're not here for a simple chat with me, Shisui. Is there something you need?"

Shisui faced the older Uchiha and said, "Well, it's about time that we spoke, don't you think?"

Obito only looked confused.

"You were never really present in the clan, so approaching you was not that simple."

Obito chuckled humorlessly. "Are you saying that you've wanted to talk to the black sheep of the Uchiha Clan this whole time, but you just didn't know how?"

Shisui pressed his lips in disapproval. "I do not like that term. I never once approved of the way the clan has spoken about you; it's demeaning and menial. And yes, to answer your question, you are correct. I just never knew how to approach you."

Obito crossed his arms, frowning. "Then what made you want to approach me now, if you've found difficulty in it before?"

Shisui smiled reverted, and he replied, "Well, I wanted to pay my respects to you. You disobeyed orders and helped the Hokage save Konoha; it was very heroic and admirable of you."

Obito blinked a few times, astounded by Shisui's words. He was not used to receiving compliments – mainly from anyone in his clan.

The older Uchiha cleared his throat and glanced off to the side, saying, "Orders are meant to be broken if it stands against the right thing."

"A philosophy that is so rare to come by these days; I like that." Shisui's smile widened.

"Thank you," Obito muttered, and the younger Uchiha nodded.

"I apologize for not approaching you before, Obito-senpai. I guess we could safely say that it's always good to start somewhere, right?"

Shisui's formality had caught Obito off guard, but he didn't mind it. He nodded and offered a small smile to the younger Uchiha. Calling him 'senpai' only portrayed Shisui's humbleness, and it surprised Obito to know that there was someone out there in his clan who was not as shallow and stuck-up as the ones he had come across so far.

Yet Obito had seen him less ever since he's distanced himself from the clan.

"There you are, Shisui," a placid voice called out, and this alerted the two Uchihas. They turned to see that it was Itachi, the son of the Uchiha Clan's leader, standing a few feet away from Obito, whose back was initially turned to him.

It was Itachi, who was mildly surprised to see the older Uchiha.

"Ah, hello, Obito-senpai; long time no see."

Obito's lips lifted into a faint smile. He also knew that Itachi was probably the only other person who matched Shisui's politeness and humbleness, and he had spoken to him before, back when he joined the Leaf Police, while the other joined Kakashi's team in ANBU. "Yeah, it sure has been a while."

Itachi was smiling kindly at Obito, and glanced back and forth between him and his best friend. "I see you two are getting acquainted,"

"Yup! Should've done this a long time ago." Shisui said, chuckling. "We happened to be checking out the new location. I'm assuming you're here for the same reasons, huh?"

Itachi nodded, shifting his gaze to the scenery before them. "I like it here."

Shisui laughed at his words and said, "Don't let the clan members hear you say that!"

Itachi only shrugged. "They won't have a choice but to use this place, anyway."

Obito exhaled a sigh and crossed his arms again, standing casually. "Well, this whole thing might be temporary, anyway. We might as well make the best out of it."

Itachi looked at Obito from the corner his eyes intently, studying the older Uchiha.

"You sound a little optimistic, Obito-senpai."

"I'm not too pleased about being this far either, but at least the training grounds are pleasant." Obito said nonchalantly.

The thirteen-year-old Uchiha walked a few steps forward, approaching the lake, and a faint, but fond smile grew on his lips. "You're not wrong. I think Sasuke would like to train here, too."

"Well, let's take a look around more, and see what the fields are like." Shisui said, walking forward, and Itachi shortly joined him. The two best friends took a few steps, and they noticed that Obito was not following – but merely standing by.

"Obito-senpai, are you coming?" Shisui called out, and Obito's eye widened in surprise for a moment. He was unsure if he should follow them – but for some reason, he felt more… relaxed with those two; and he figured that he preferred being around them more than any other clan member. Perhaps he could try to get used to this.

Suddenly, Obito felt a shiver run down his spine – an ominous feeling creeped up inside him as he sensed a strange…presence in the premises. His eyes slowly shifted around, looking to his left, his right, and even above – trying to pinpoint where that presence was coming from.

But he couldn't see anything.

'Strange…Was it my imagination…? Or could it be that we're...'

-.x.-

The sun was setting, and bright orange and lavender hues colored the sky of Konoha. In the Uchiha training grounds, Obito was sitting cross-legged on the grass, facing the giant lake with his right arm stretched out and balancing a twig that stood upright on his palm. His left arm held onto his right one in order to ease the muscle aches since he'd been in the same position for a while. Every now and then, he would make sure that the balance of his artificial arm was intact.

"Ah, if it isn't Obito-senpai,"

Obito tensed slightly when he heard a from behind, followed by gentle footsteps approaching him. He looked over his shoulder, and his eye widened briefly when he saw that it was Shisui.

"Shisui…?"

Shisui paused right next to him, and smiled at the older Uchiha. "Mind if I join you, senpai?"

Obito shook his head, "No, go ahead." He relaxed his arms and tossed the twig to the side.

Shisui took a seat next to Obito, and leaned his elbows on his knees.

It was quiet, the gentle rocking of water against the earth was heard. After a few beats, Shisui spoke.

"Does it still hurt?"

Obito quirked a brow at the young Uchiha. "What?"

Shisui's tone was quiet. "Your scars."

Obito's eye flickered. He didn't know if he should respond to that or not, but when he stared at the profile of his relative, he could tell that in a sense, he was extending his sympathy.

Obito turned his gaze back at the lake and said, "Not as much as before."

"I cannot imagine what you've been through. You went to war at a young age, you sacrificed your life to save your comrades, and you miraculously returned and recovered."

Shisui then turned his face to look at Obito directly. "And for your heroic actions, you return to a clan that resents you and disrespects your wishes to leave a Sharingan with a non-Uchiha. It is eerily similar to what happened with the White Fang, don't you think?"

Obito didn't respond, his expression was merely blank as he recalled the events that Shisui spoke of.

"Is your friend… truly that important to you? So important that you would live with only half of your vision, and half of your powers?"

Obito inhaled a deep breath and then spoke.

"It was a matter of entrusting the future to someone you trust deep down. It was a matter of seeing the future through someone whom you have faith in, and that is someone who can fully, with all their heart, protect everything that is precious to life." Obito said, looking up at the sky. He recalled the way those boulders fell over him and how he'd become trapped, and how he accepted his fate that he would no longer make it.

"I'm about to… die… but I'll become your eye… and see the future with you."

"I was certain that I was going to die. There was no doubt about it." He then faced Shisui. "And I was lucky that it was Kakashi, a strong, powerful and trustworthy ninja, who had the honor of wielding my eye, for me to see the future."

He then exhaled a breath and shrugged. "Well… Thankfully, life gave me a second chance. And with this chance," Obito looked down at his right hand, and made a tight fist.

"I've strengthened my resolve to put an end to fighting…because of that resolve, I am more than determined to become Hokage."

Shisui's lips parted as he stared in bewilderment, absorbing his senior's words. He felt moved…there was someone who also shared the same goals that he and Itachi had…there was someone who carried so much potential, and intended to unleash that potential in order to look for a way out of suffering and fighting.

Shisui's lips grew into a wide grin, and he felt excitement rush through him. "Me too..!"

Obito merely blinked at him confusion.

"I too, wish to put an end to fighting. I too wish to bring peace and co-existence," Shisui continued. "We shinobis wake up every day, wondering if today would be our last. We wake up every day fighting with an obligation to take life, simply because our world demands it. There are always threats and hidden dangers lurking around, forcing us to raise death and destruction. If fighting can be stopped, I'd like to stop it. I wish to put an end to all of it, no matter what it takes."

Shisui then placed a hand on Obito's shoulder. "You are a good man, Obito-senpai. It's a relief that there is someone like you who is determined to bring justice to the world of shinobi."

Obito was overwhelmed with Shisui's words – he looked at the younger Uchiha in shock. It was entirely unexpected; he never once imagined that there would be a time where he'd find himself bonding with a fellow clansman over the same ideals. Shisui Uchiha had become the first person from his own clan to express his support directly about his choices and ambitions.

He gulped as he read the sincerity that was written all over Shisui's eyes, and he huffed out a chuckle, unable to contain the joy that bubbled in him at the thought of being recognized by someone who is known to be devoted to the Uchiha Clan. It felt so good…he felt so relaxed and consoled that this young boy, who happens to also be his relative, also cares for the village's well-being.

"I never thought I'd hear a member of my own clan tell me something like that."

Shisui laughed, and squeezed his shoulder. "It's the truth, Obito-senpai."

Obito's lips formed a small smile.

-.x.-

It has been three months since the Uchiha Clan moved away from nearby the center of the village, and into the outskirts.

Three months since they were forced to leave what was left of their home… homes that enabled the young ones to live nearby their classmates…and homes that allowed parents to live nearby their friends.

Yet Minato never stopped pursuing the Konoha Elders; he consistently pushed them to reconsider their decision. It was an exhausting cycle of repeating the same words, which would trigger the Council members, who would try to divert the subject or shut down the discussion.

It was all thanks to one particular member who planted the seeds of fear into the other Council members, in which whenever the name 'Uchiha' was brought up, they would stiffen and hesitate, and turn away from the topic.

"Three months have gone by, and you are still clinging onto that same subject about the Uchiha Clan when the final decision has already been made." Danzo bit out, arms crossed over his chest.

"Forgive me for my words, Lord Fourth, but I am starting to think that they have manipulated you into having this same conversation over and over again." Danzo's smirk was mocking the Fourth before him.

Minato's eyes narrowed sharply, yet his tone remained calm.

"I assure you, Lord Danzo, that the Uchiha would not resort to such low means as to manipulate the Hokage of their village."

"You already know the consequences. The villagers will not be happy with having the Uchiha near them after all that's happened." Danzo said coldly.

"Then are we setting rules and order based on some trivial rumors, or are we setting them for the sake of everyone's wellbeing?" Minato countered. "I've said this before and I'll say it again, the Uchiha Clan are significant to Konoha. They are a part of this village just as much as I am. They are the true military power of this village, and without them, we will not sustain the reputation of being one of the most powerful nations."

"That does not mean that the Uchiha Clan are trustworthy. You are already aware of their history, and how notorious they are with their wicked dojutsu. As I mentioned many times, Lord Fourth, placing them near the center of the village will only raise more unrest. One of them already acted on their own accord and defied clear orders." Danzo parried back, his irritation seeping through his words.

Minato clenched his fists tightly at that blow, his azure gaze hardening. Before he could fire anything back, Koharu interjected.

"The Uchiha Clan have already settled and adapted to their new location, Lord Fourth. Bringing them back would only raise more suspicion amongst the villagers, and the authority of Konoha would be questioned."

Homura nodded his head, agreeing with her words, and said, "We are simply advising you the best course of action, Hokage-sama. Any hasty act will already shake the foundation of this village, so you need to be very careful with your next steps. The matter with the Uchiha Clan has already been settled, and the villagers are comfortable with the resolution."

Minato felt a headache throb for the hundredth time, his frustration leaking out.

"You nullified their positions and their role in this village – a role that served Konoha for years upon years, and handed it over to the ANBU. You left them with nothing but a sense of imprisonment, and yet you say you are worried about—"

"This is not about nullifying their role and invalidating their presence, Lord Fourth." Danzo interrupted, his gaze passive and unfazed. "This is about taking essential steps for Konoha to return back to being a prosperous state. You'd do well enough to understand that as the Hokage."

Minato stood up from his seat and pierced Danzo and Council members with a hard glare.

"As the Hokage of this village, Lord Danzo, it is my main mission to stand for what is right. I will end this meeting for now, but this matter will continue to go on until an optimal decision has been made. Dismissed."

Minato did not bother to look back at the Elders and exited the meeting room.

Homura and Koharu both looked at Danzo in concern.

"He is awfully resilient when it comes to this matter," Homura said.

"How long does he intend to go on about this? We have quelled the fears of the villagers, and yet he is determined to undo all of our efforts for the sake of that clan." Koharu added.

Danzo's expression only remained inscrutable; he was completely undaunted by the words of Minato.

"Clearly he is influenced by the Uchiha Clan," Danzo reasoned. "He is getting too involved with them, sometimes it makes me wonder if they have him under a genjutsu."

He then huffed out a cynical chuckle. "A Hokage that cares about the wellbeing of a distrustful, impudent clan rather than the wellbeing of the village…I never thought I'd see anything more ridiculous. Ah well," He shook his head. "This is what Sandaime wanted; I was already against his decision from the start, but he has always been naïve."

Koharu and Homura only looked at each other. They failed to notice the faint, sinister smirk on Danzo's face.

-.x.-

Two metals clanged against each other, and hot sparks flew. Eyes locked, the crimson color flaring as they pushed against each other by channeling force into their kunai.

They then leaped backwards, the two kunais were flung towards each other at equal speed, and when they hit the ground, one knife had pinned the other through its loop. Another kunai was thrown upwards, and suddenly, a rain of shuriken fell from the trees. The other pulled out another kunai from his pocket and parried the falling shuriken, his eyes coordinating with the movement of his arms that whipped around at immense speed.

"Heh, not bad," Shisui grinned, standing behind Obito, who swiftly turned around and crossed his arms before his face to block Shisui's kick. Obito then rounded a kick towards Shisui, who blocked it with his arm. Shisui then swung a punch towards Obito, and it landed on his jaw.

Shisui then swerved and swung a knife-hand strike, and Obito's head ducked, and this gave Shisui the chance to land a mean uppercut. Shisui then threw another punch, yet Obito bounced, spun, and slammed his elbow against Shisui's shoulder, shaking his balance.

Obito then swung his fist towards Shisui's face, yet Shisui ducked down to kick at Obito's torso, and Obito acted quickly by swerving to the side.

They were at it for nearly fifteen minutes, the air whipping and the smacking sound echoing with every kick and punch they flung at each other,

Shisui had challenged Obito to spar with him in the training grounds, with Itachi observing the two Uchihas, studying their techniques and forms.

It was a tough one, but Obito ended up dominating the fight when he swiftly deviated to the side, leading Shisui towards him, and when Shisui leaped up to roundhouse kick Obito, Obito ducked down, pivoted, and snapped a kick directly at Shisui's face, which hurled the younger Uchiha to the ground, in which he tumbled and skidded against the earth until his body paused.

That was the end of their hand-to-hand combat.

"Obito-senpai wins," Itachi announced with an impressed look on his face.

As the two Uchihas were panting heavily, Obito walked towards Shisui, and leaned out a hand for him to take.

Shisui gratefully took his hand, muttering his thanks when Obito pulled him up, and grinned brightly at the older Uchiha; admiration evident in his dark eyes.

"That was amazing, Obito-senpai!"

Obito only chuckled, willing away his bashfulness by rubbing the back of his neck.

"Same goes for one of the most talented Uchiha," Obito replied.

Itachi had walked over the two of them and offered a canteen of water. "It is interesting to see you defeated for a change," he teased his best friend.

"Right?" Shisui grinned at his friend, taking the canteen to gulp some water, then offered it to Obito.

"Although, I highly doubt that this is all the skills you could show me," Shisui said. "Your experience astounds me, you managed to take control of the outcome."

Obito, after gulping some water, looked at Shisui and said, "Well, it's my first time sparring with you. I went with your pace. Your mobility and perception are really impressive."

Shisui looked at his best friend with a smirk. "Next time, it'll be you and Itachi. I'm curious to see how that would turn out."

Itachi merely smiled, shaking his head in amusement, and Obito quietly laughed and said, "Well, I look forward to it."

Yashiro, Tekka, and Inabi stood in front of Fugaku Uchiha within the confinements of the Naka Shrine. Fugaku remained composed in front of his subordinates, his arms crossed before his chest as he listened to their words.

The three of them were tense, with bitterness evident in their eyes as they expressed their anger and irritation to the leader of the clan.

"It's been three months, Captain," Yashiro spoke. "Are we still clinging onto this fickle hope that something will change?"

"Why are they doing this to us?!" Inabi shouted. "Didn't the Hokage say that he will do something about this?! Or is Konoha planning on making us adapt to that place so that they can dismiss us?"

Tekka then added in, "They're keeping us under the surveillance of the ANBU… they've really pushed it this time, Captain."

Fugaku sighed, closing his eyes for a moment, then opening them to look at his comrades. "It's not the Hokage that wants this. It's the Konoha Council. The Hokage is pushing the Elders to let us move back in to where we belong, however the Elders do not want to budge. They still mistrust us, and the villagers are too afraid because of the rumors."

Inabi's gaze hardened. "If that shitty brat didn't disobey orders, then none of this would've happened," he spat.

Fugaku looked at Inabi sharply, eyes narrowing. "You're wrong, Inabi. It would not have made a difference. We were pushed aside because they thought we could control the Tailed Beast. Obito was brave enough to break the rules to help the Hokage. He took our rights back."

Inabi gritted his teeth. "Took our rights back? Look at where we are, Fugaku-sama!"

Fugaku shot a stony glare at Inabi. "This is not Obito's fault, Inabi. Do not bring Obito into something that the higher-ups are forcing upon us. It's them who should be blamed, not a member of our clan."

Inabi remained silent at those words, snapping his face to the side to glare at the wall.

"Well then, Captain, I don't think the Elders are leaving a choice for us." Yashiro quipped.

Fugaku quirked a brow at Yashiro. Tekka and Inabi turned to look at the white-haired Uchiha.

"If this persists," Yashiro continued. "Then there is only one thing that will make the Elders listen to our voices."

Fugaku narrowed his eyes. "What are you saying? Are you suggesting that we rebel against the whole village?"

Yashiro nodded. "That's right, Captain. A coup d'état."

Inabi and Tekka's eyes widened briefly. Fugaku fell silent, in shock.

"It's the only way our voices can be heard, and the only way to show them that we are not some sheep that will be herded to the outskirts under the commands of those who detest us."

Inabi then nodded his head in agreement. "You're right; they can't expect us to be silent for long."

Tekka glanced at Fugaku. "I agree. They can't push us around anymore."

Fugaku looked at the three of them, lips tightening as he absorbed their words. So, this is what it has come to… The truth is, he could not blame any of them for reaching such a disturbing conclusion.

A rebellion... A coup d'état…

Was that really the only solution? Was it this the only way to combat the unfair mistreatment towards the Uchiha Clan?

Fugaku was unsettled, but they were right. The Konoha Council is bringing a mutiny upon themselves, and the more they squeezed the Uchiha Clan to a corner, the less control there will be over the consequences.

"We must not be too hasty." Fugaku said. "We need to figure out what is Konoha's true intentions, and act from there." His gaze then hardened. "If the village does not change…then we will force them to stop tormenting our clan."

Inabi, Tekka, and Yashiro nodded their head in agreement.

Obito and Rin were sitting on a thick, wide tree branch in the public training grounds, with Rin reading a scroll while her legs gently dangled back and forth, and Obito resting with one leg hanging over the edge and the other bent with his forearm resting on his knee, his position caged Rin in the middle, although there was a slight distance between them.

Rin had started to grow fond of the training grounds because it was usually peaceful and quiet, and the air was always fresh for her to breathe in as she cleared her mind.

Not only that, it was the place where she would easily relax with Obito. Ever since he helped her meditate that day, she decided to utilize the vast space to practice her chakra control, and even review her medical notes.

And much to her delight, most of the time she would be with Obito, who did his very best to make time for her even though he's moved far away… and just the thought of it fills her heart with so much joy and comfort.

Sometimes he would exercise his taijutsu forms, and Rin would end up losing focus on her readings and would stare at her best friend the same way she would stare at Kakashi back when she had a crush on him – her hazel eyes would be dazed, her purple-marked cheeks would tinge pink, and her lips would be lifted in a giddy smile.

She loved the way his black hair fell over in a fringe when he wasn't wearing his modified forehead protector, and the way he was dressed in his Leaf Police uniform, which amplified the virility he was emitting. And as strange as she felt by thinking it, his scars pleasantly complimented his features. She couldn't help but admire the way he would walk around uncaring of who saw him with one eye; it just showed how confident he's become and it only drew her in further.

She found herself letting out a soft breath whenever she realizes that she was staring too much.

Lucky for her, Obito didn't seem to notice the way she looked at him.

Yet she doesn't realize the way he looks at her… he looks at her the same way he does when he started to fall in love with her.

As they were currently sitting together, with Rin seemingly engrossed in the scroll that she was reading, Obito was taking in her features.

The way her long, brown hair that reached her waist was brushed by the wind.

The way her bright, hazel eyes were concentrated on the words she was reading.

The way her lips were involuntarily curved in a small smile.

The slightest hint of pink on her purple-marked cheeks.

Beautiful.

Rin was just beautiful.

She always looked so serene and angelic to him and it took his breath away.

Ever since they were kids, Obito always stared at her face, and he had become so good at reading her emotions. He recalled the time when Kakashi and Gai fought during the preliminary round of their first Chuunin exam, and he remembered how much he yearned for the same love, admiration, and joy that shone in Rin's face, especially in her eyes, when she cheered for Kakashi. She looked so beautiful that it made his heart sting because it was not for him.

The more they spent time together, the more Obito knew how to decipher the slightest disturbance in her energy. Rin was always putting on a cheerful face, doing her best to not make anyone worry about her when she felt upset or distressed.

And here he was, watching her read her notes and observing her profile. Brown locks framed the side of her jaw, reaching passed her shoulders. Hazel eyes glazed over the scroll. On the outside, she looked calm and focused. But Obito noticed that her eyes were staring at the same passage for a while now, and how it faintly glinted when there was a thought in her head. There was something on her mind, and it had nothing to do with medical ninjutsu or whatever it was that she was reviewing.

"What are you thinking about, Rin?"

Rin's eyes flickered, widening briefly at his voice, and then she looked up from her scroll and blinked at the Uchiha.

"Mm?"

Obito smiled faintly with a knowing look. "What's on your mind?"

Her eyes averted to the side. "O-oh, nothing, I was just wondering about the benefits of horsetail plants against certain poisons,"

Obito only raised his brow. Rin heaved out a sigh and said, "Well, it is that and…something else."

"Clearly there is something distracting you, Rin. Tell me, what is it?"

"Obito…" she nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Do you think…Do you think that I will be able to go back on missions again?"

Obito's brows furrowed at her question, his eye softening. "Do you want to go back to doing missions?"

Rin bit her lip. "I don't know… A part of me still wants to, but…"

"But you still feel doubtful about it because of… the last time," Obito continues, and Rin nods her head slightly.

"Yeah.." She then chuckles humorlessly. "It's funny, huh? I'm a full-fledged Jonin kunoichi who is afraid of going on missions. I mean, working on the hospital is half of my career, but there is also the other half, which is to ensure the survival rate of ninjas in high-ranking missions,"

"Rin," Obito started, and she looked up at him with uncertainty in her eyes.

"There is no rush for you to go back to doing missions," he said. "It's a matter of being ready to go back. That's why Minato-sensei told you to take your time, right? You can't force yourself into something you're not ready for. And only you know when you would feel prepared to take on missions again."

Obito then gave her a reassuring smile. "Just be patient with yourself, Rin. Because I know you can do it."

At his words, Rin felt her nervousness and uncertainty start to dissipate and be replaced with a light sensation on her chest, and that warmth she always loved.

Obito always understood her.

He always knew what to tell her – and he was never wrong with his words.

Just by Obito being on her side, she had seen herself come so far compared to when she was at her lowest. She was still healing herself, taking the steps that she needed, and Obito's presence by her side had only helped regain the confidence that she thought she lost.

"When I do feel ready…Do you think we would be able to go on missions together?"

Obito blinked at her. "Hm?"

Despite the bright smile that blossomed on her face, her gaze lowered shyly, and she couldn't help but ask the question.

"I was just wondering if it would be possible to attend those missions with you… I think it would be nice."

Obito let out an amused sound, almost like a faint chuckle but not quite. "I'm sure we can figure something out. Because I actually think that would be great."

Rin brightened, her eyes shining happily as she perked up. "Really? You think so?"

"Yup," Obito then moved to leap off the branch and land on the ground. Rin looked down at him, blinking curiously.

Obito held up his arms towards her, gesturing for her to jump down. Rin giggled, folding her scroll and pocketing it, and without hesitation, she jumped down towards the Uchiha beneath her.

She felt him engulf her instantly, her arms linking around his neck as she slowly slid down his chest and landed on her feet. The Uchiha's arms were tight around her, holding her figure to his chest tightly.

"Because that means I will be able to protect you." He continued, his eye soft with emotion.

A bright blush colored her cheeks as his words sunk in, and her heart started to pound in her chest. When she looked up to face him, she realized that they were intimately close, but neither of them made a move to back away. She felt dazed by his obsidian gaze – which radiated a sense of comfort that sent flutters in her tummy.

In a trance, Obito's eyelid lowered slightly, and he slowly, slowly leaned down, and when their noses touched, they both snapped out of their daze. Obito let out a slight chuckle, his arms loosening around her, while Rin's arms slipped from his neck, her hands drifting over his chest. The warmth that they felt on their body started to fade, and they took a step back.

"We should go," Rin said, trying to remain casual while her heart pounded against her chest.

Obito nodded, shoving his hands in his pocket.

"Yeah."

The two of them walked side by side in a somewhat comfortable silence. On the surface, they seemed natural, as though what had happened earlier was a normal thing between them.

Yet neither of them knew that their hearts raced because they were in each other's arms.

Neither of them knew that they both wished it had lasted just a little longer.

Hokage Mansion

"If this keeps up, then I believe it is time that we reconsider Minato's position as the Hokage of the Leaf." Danzo spoke, sitting across from Homura and Koharu in a meeting room.

"That won't be easy, Lord Danzo. The Daimyo wants the Yellow Flash to be Konohagakure's leader. How can we simply question his authority and his decision of whom he had already chosen?" Homura asked, raising a brow.

"Minato has already proven to be very capable as a Hokage. The village already looks up to him, and he has earned the trust of the clans, especially Konoha's most noble clans. For us to reconsider something like this—" Koharu was cut off by Danzo before she could continue.

"Yet he is only focused on one clan, a clan that can pose as a great threat to the village, and you call this being capable?" Danzo snapped, and shot a glare at his fellow Elders.

The two Elders only remained silent, and Danzo continued.

"Do you both not see how he is neglecting the village matters, and is only focused on the satisfaction of the Uchiha Clan?"

He raised his voice and slammed his fist on the armrest of the chair. "I told that foolish old man Sandaime that this was a mistake. Minato is too naïve for this position!"

"Mind what you say, Lord Danzo!" Koharu gasped.

"Such words can get you charged for treason," Homura said.

"Hmph. So, you're saying that we should sit still here and allow this ridiculousness to continue." He scoffed. "The only words I speak is simply for the sake of the village. For the sake of Konoha."

The two Elders only looked down in thought, absorbing Danzo's words.

Danzo's eyes narrowed menacingly. "The two of you are smart enough to know that, given your positions."

Hokage's Office

"You summoned me, Yondaime-sama?" A voice spoke up from behind the porcelain mask of the ninja whose head was bowed down while he stood on his knee.

Minato's eyes left the scroll he was reading and looked at the ANBU shinobi before him. He clasped his hands underneath his chin.

"That's right, Kakashi."

"What can I do for you, sir?" The silver-haired ninja asked.

"I have an important mission for you. Before I assign you this task, you must understand that this is a completely top-secret investigative mission in which only you will carry out, and report back to me directly."

Minato then continued; his azure eyes sharp. "I trust that you will maintain this confidentiality and that you will inform me of every detail that you gained from this assignment. Is that clear?"

"Understood, sir. I swear to maintain the anonymity of this mission and to not fail in my task." Kakashi nodded.

"Good." Minato then stood from his seat and walked over to the window with his hands behind his back.

"Kakashi. Your order is to spy on Lord Danzo and the ANBU subdivision: Root. I want you to find out what is Danzo's true intentions and the kind of missions that they're carrying under Danzo's command, and report it all to me."

"Roger that, sir."

Kakashi was never one to ask what is going on or the reason behind any of his missions handed to him by the Hokage, but given the intensity of his task, Kakashi felt that there was something sinister and conflicting going on. It was strange for the Hokage to spy on an Elder of Konoha – the supposed trusted advisors of the Hokage who will guide him towards the protection of the village and maintaining its stability.

Minato could tell what Kakashi is thinking, and because Kakashi is one of his most trusted subordinates, he decided to clue in on the motive behind this mission.

"Lord Danzo's actions and influence over the Konoha Council is far too suspicious for me to let him slide, Kakashi. There is already enough tension with other nations as we speak, and his distrust towards the Uchiha Clan is only raising more problems than we need. He is trying to weaken Konoha's military power by driving away the Uchiha Clan from the village." He let out a sigh, struggling to maintain his composure.

"Being direct with the Council has proven to be futile. The fear towards the Uchiha Clan has already spread far enough, and all we've been doing is running in circles trying to squish it down." He then turned to look at his student. "That's why, if changes are to be made, we cannot be blind about what is happening in the shadows."

"Understood, sir." Kakashi nodded, and then said perceptively, "It seems that Lord Danzo is not only trying to weaken Konohagakure's military strength, but he is also trying to weaken your influence as the Hokage of the village."

Minato nodded. "That is correct. That is why we must act fast, and smart, too. You're the only one I can trust with this, Kakashi."

"I will not fail you, Sensei. I'll find out what Danzo is up to and report back to you."

"Good. You're dismissed."

Kakashi vanished in a poof of smoke, and Minato let out a breath, and turned back to the window with a hard gaze.

'Let's see how far you're willing to go, Danzo.'

The sensation of a familiar chakra signature prompted the figure to look up at the trees that were scattered behind the cliff of the Naka River.

"Is that you, Shisui?"

Itachi spoke from behind his porcelain cat mask, with his arms crossed and leaning on a tree trunk.

The leaves rustled, and Shisui materialized before Itachi, landing on his knees. He then stood up and smiled widely at his best friend.

"Sorry to keep you waiting, Itachi." His friend said.

Itachi shook his head and smiled back at Shisui. "It's alright."

The two of them walked towards the cliff, facing the large waterfall that ran down to the Naka River. It was silent for a few moments, and then Shisui spoke.

"They assigned the two of us to spy on the Leaf, while the Leaf assigned you to spy on the Uchiha." Shisui sighed. "I can't help but feel that this is starting to get out of hand."

"Dissatisfaction is growing among the Uchiha Clan. They're getting restless." Itachi said. "I don't think they will be patient with the village any longer."

"If the Uchiha Clan attempts the coup d'état, it won't solve anything. It'll only end badly for both sides." Shisui said, his brows furrowing.

"I'm against the coup d'état as well." Itachi said, with a hint of frustration laced in his tone.

"My only hope for the Uchiha Clan and the village is to co-exist with each other," Shisui said with a sad tone. "Now it's only gotten more complicated."

"If this goes on, the Uchiha Clan will be irresistible. Even Father will lose his control over them. No matter how much the Hokage expresses his support, Father's loyalty to the clan comes first."

"Spying on Konoha and relaying back intel to the clan will only fuel the fire that's burning. However, there is a way to put a stop to all this before it explodes into a catastrophe." Shisui said, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Itachi looked at his best friend and quirked a skeptical brow. "What are you suggesting?"

A pause. Shisui contemplated whether he should mention the plan he had deep in his mind. Shisui loved his clan – his devotion ran so deep that he did not wish to see them fall into chaos because of rash actions and violence. It was not worth losing his clan to a potential civil war. His best friend also felt the same way. He knew that there would be no resistance from him regarding the plan he thought of.

They both fight on the side of peace.

They both wished that fighting would stop.

Even if this was the only way…

"There is an assembly coming up soon." Shisui started. "On the day of the assembly, everyone will gather into the Naka Shrine, and I am certain that they would be conspiring their new actions against the Leaf in there."

Itachi's brows furrowed, and he waited for his friend to continue.

"I will take advantage of the meeting and release the jutsu of my Visual Prowess: Kotoamatsukami. It's a mind-controlling genjutsu, which makes anyone experience thoughts and actions as though it were their own free-will." Shisui's tone was solemn, he kept his gaze locked on the waterfall, unwilling to look at Itachi's shocked expression.

"Shisui…That's…"

Shisui's eyes lowered, and he heaved out a sigh. "I know… I know, Itachi. But unless something changes, then this is the only choice we have. It's all for the protection of the village, and the honor of the Uchiha Clan."

Silence.

Itachi turned away from his best friend and faced the waterfall, closing his eyes briefly to regain his composure. He truly wished that it didn't come down to this – where it potentially took an advanced genjutsu to keep order and peace in line. He truly wished that there were no tensions and resentment between the clan and Konoha in the first place.

Was it truly that far-fetched for relations to improve?

Is this the only way to stop all the fighting?

"I understand." Itachi said, his expression was seemingly calm despite the inner turmoil he felt at the thought of how complex everything has become. But he knew that Shisui also felt frustrated and overwhelmed that this is what he had to resort to. If things do get worse, then maybe, just maybe, this was the only way.

While the two Uchihas stood by the cliff, they failed to notice three eerily hooded ANBU figures who had their chakra hidden while they were concealed by the shadows of the trees, overhearing everything that was spoken.

-.x.-

The bright evening sky draped over Konoha, and Obito was just returning to the Uchiha compounds after his shift. At first, he felt calm and collected, walking with his hands in his pocket, but once he entered the gates, he couldn't help but tense up at the negative sensation that seemed to be spreading all over.

And he was once again reminded of the Uchiha Clan's desire to rebel against the Leaf – which sent chills that tightened his muscles.

It was spoken of in one of the assemblies, and Obito was completely shocked he couldn't register that they had already started to conspire against Konoha.

At first, Obito thought that they would be patient and trust in the Hokage to come up with a solution to this problem.

But the Uchiha had already sent out their spies.

The Police Force was starting to act out brutally on their arrests.

He remembered the conversation he had with Fugaku after the assembly that day, which left Obito at a complete loss deep down.

"Fugaku-sama, you cannot be serious…" Obito spoke, his expression shocked as he stood before his leader in the middle of the empty room within the depths of the Naka Shrine.

"Why wouldn't I be, Obito?" Fugaku's tone was cold, his back turned away from the Uchiha with his arms crossed over his chest.

"Is this truly the solution that the Uchiha Clan thought of?" Obito spoke out, gesturing with his hands. "Starting a coup d'état to achieve peace…?!"

"The higher-ups of the village fear us," Fugaku snapped. "All we've done is let them push us around and while we take it silently." Fugaku then looked at Obito over his shoulder.

"I'm sure you're intelligent enough to notice that this whole time, they have been watching us through their surveillance. They want to keep us in check because they do not trust us. Do you think that this is acceptable? Do you think we can allow them to keep walking all over our dignity?"

Obito's hands fisted tightly as he looked down, gritting his teeth while his brows furrowed in frustration. "Have you no faith in the Hokage? He is on our side! He wouldn't allow this to continue! It's a matter of being patient—"

"It's been three months, Obito." Fugaku cut him off, his eyes narrowing. "This has nothing to do with the Hokage anymore. The higher-ups do not want the Uchiha close to the village because it's the villagers that fear us. This is their attempt to avoid conflict – by cornering the Uchiha Clan into the outskirts so they can feel peaceful as they control us while we suffer."

Obito couldn't help but boldly shoot a glare at his leader. "Do you honestly think that this will end well for both sides, Fugaku-sama? I understand the frustrations of the clan, but you act as if the Hokage is not doing anything about this. You act as if Minato-sensei is not working hard enough to push for us to return to where we belong!"

Fugaku's dark gaze hardened. "Hn. And you act as if we have not been persecuted all those years because the Elders love to cling onto the ghosts of the past, and using that as means to justify their reasons to keep us at a distance."

"So, that's it then." Obito said sharply, anger evident in his eye. "Brute force and bloodshed are the only way to end this conflict."

Fugaku's tone lowered. "I want to avoid the use of brute force. I want this to be a bloodless revolution. It's a matter of restraining the higher-ups, and laying down the conditions that we want from Konoha."

"Two sides against each other – two sides fighting one another." Obito then scoffed. "If you ask me, it is the Uchiha Clan that is clinging onto the ghosts of the past. This is just history repeating itself. You should just leave this matter to the Hokage."

Fugaku sharply turned to face the younger Uchiha, and glared at him threateningly.

"You better watch what you say, Uchiha Obito." His tone was fierce. "I respect you and understand where you're coming from, but running that mouth of yours will not change anything. You've already expressed your objection on this matter, and I've had enough."

"Fine. Say what you will; but as an Uchiha myself, I am more than certain that this mutiny will not end well for the Uchiha Clan, and that is something to keep in mind."

Obito exited the room and vanished in an instant.

Obito gritted his teeth in irritation and bitterness – he was still unable to fathom how badly things have taken a turn. Did they think that Minato was a coward? Did they think that Minato was sitting still and agreeing with the Council's decision?

Obito knew the Hokage more than anyone in this clan – even more than Fugaku has ever known him. Minato never discriminated against the Uchiha, he always treated them as respectable members of the village.

Just when Obito thought there was a chance that he and Fugaku were getting along – it took a whole disagreement on the conflict to pull them backwards.

He remembered that there was an assembly coming up, and he pondered what was going to happen next. Will that be their last assembly?

"You seem to be lost in thought, Obito-senpai." A voice broke Obito out of his trance, prompting the Uchiha to blink and look up at who greeted him.

"Oh, Shisui. I didn't notice you, sorry." Obito quirked a small apologetic smile, and rubbed his neck.

"All good. What's on your mind? Is something wrong?"

Obito shook his head, and placed his hand back in his pocket.

"Nah. I just remembered that we have another assembly coming up. You're going to be there too, right?"

Shisui grinned sheepishly at the older Uchiha. "Ah, actually, I'm going to have a mission on that day. I won't be attending it, sadly."

Obito inwardly perked up at this, but he didn't allow it to show. "I see. Oh well, a mission is a mission, after all."

Shisui chuckled. "Yeah. Perhaps we can spar afterwards, if you're free."
