My plans immediately failed when my father, for some reason, said that I, a seven-year-old child, could not have $1000. To be fair, I should've seen this coming. Even if your child is the offspring of the goddess of wisdom, you don't simply give them so much money, plus I couldn't tell him that I was a 19-year-old stuck inside a seven-year-old's body.
He would be even more reluctant to give me the money if I had told that I was going to use it to bribe the god of wine, and to also buy a weapon. Ah, the life of a demigod. However, I did tell him to buy stock in Apple and Amazon. He was confused since he never heard of those companies, but thankfully he bought a good amount. Ah, he'll be thanking me for the early retirement in a decade or so.
But without the money, I had nothing to really do, apart from play my Gameboy(Read: Pokemon), and cheat on tests. So now I had to wait for a month.
And by the gods, it felt like an eternity. I don't whether it's my newly acquired ADHD, but the entire month of doing nothing of importance was really grating on me. Hell, I couldn't even play Pokemon properly since it felt so slow. That's a torture worthy for Tartarus! So, all I did was read, but that was really annoying since I had dyslexia (though weak.).
Honestly, the only notable thing that happened was my 8th birthday, though since the Odysseus that existed before I entered this body had no friends, it was just me and my father, which was okay with me.
I did make more notes and plans, though, so I guess that was nice.
And finally, the day came. I was going to Camp Half-Blood. Honestly, I was rather thankful I wasn't a son of Poseidon or Hades, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to make the 5-hour flight from Washington to New York. Oh, and by coincidence, my home was in Olympia, the capital or whatever of my state, which was interesting.
My father and I hailed a taxi to Long Island, a place that disappointed me since it was island by the barest of gaps between the mainland and the island, though that was a stupid thing to get disappointed by. I stared out of the cab's window with a childlike wonder that I didn't need to fake.
We even passed by Time Square, though it didn't look as advert filled as I saw in photos. There was quite a bit of promotional material for the movie, Unbreakable. I never saw the movie though. To be honest, I've barely seen any movies in my previous life, since they were usually propaganda.
Eventually we reached the woods, the place which would lead me to Camp Half-Blood. The place where Percy would fight the Minotaur in 5 years. I looked back to my father, who stood in front of the cab. "See you soon Dad" I say. I still wasn't sure if I truly considered the man as my father, but I did appreciate him.
Alexander Ward let a rare smile come on his face, "Stay safe". And with that, I walked into the woods, a backpack in my hand, carry some basic necessities and my Gameboy Colour.
To be honest, the trek to the camp was boring. Yeah sure, the Minotaur wouldn't come after me since I'm a child of Athena, but I hoped for at least a scorpion or hellhound. Nevertheless, I kept walking, and finally reached the hill which Thalia's tree would one day stand. If my calculations are correct, it should be sometime this summer. Perhaps I could save her.
I arrive at the peak of the hill, and my jaw drops at the site of the camp. The book descriptions don't do it justice. It's beautiful. Lush emerald grass, large bountiful trees, campers laughing in joy, and brilliant azure sky encompassing it. It looked like what I thought Elysium would be.
Holy shit, there's lava coming out of that climbing wall! Can't believe I'm seeing it with my own eyes. And those are some big pigeons flying in the distance... Wait a minute! Those are Pegasi! Honest to gods Pegasi! That's awesome! I see Satyrs frolicking about, probably in heated discussions about what type of fizzy drink cans taste the best. And then there are the nymphs... All I can say is that I am hella grateful that I'm not going through puberty right now.
Walking down the hill, I see a couple campers on the volleyball court. One team had brilliant blonde hair, with rather dashing faces, whilst the other was... less handsome. They looked more thuggish, a bit like ogres, though without the green skin. I could easily assume that this was a match between the Apollo and Ares Cabins respectively.
I feel the stares of some campers who had noticed I was there. I could hear whispers of "Great. Another kid to fill our cabin", or "What's with the white hair". Yeah, I'm really regretting my hair choice.
I also pass by an Arts and Crafts area on the way, filled with a couple of kids trying to build a sculpture of some kind. It looks a bit like a centaur, if I do say so myself. A camper holding a wireframe of an arm looked at me. She had brown hair, looked around 16 or 17, and had grey, silver eyes like me. Our eyes connect and a knowing smile crawls on her face. I suppose she saw my eyes and realised I was probably her half-sibling.
Eventually, I reached the Big House, the place where Mr D and Chiron slept. The place where the cursed oracle resided. I knock on the door, looking around, nervous. This would by first time meeting someone straight from the books.
"Hello child" A wizened voice greeted behind me. I spun around on my feet and looked behind me. There, I saw the top half of a man, who looked like a professor, with long brown hair and a pointed beard. He wore a shirt and a tie. However, his lower half was that of a horse, with strong calves and a long thick tail.
"H-Hello, sir" I stuttered out, not even needing to fake my shock, "I g-guess you're Chiron?"
Chiron let out a soft chuckle, "Indeed I am, young man. But I'm afraid I don't know your name" Crap, I forgot to introduce myself.
"Uh, my name's Odysseus Ward" I rubbed the back of my head, embarrassed. I had no idea what to really say to this man. I can't very well say, 'Sup horse guy, I know shit from the future. Kronos is coming so you better get a spare set of underwear '.
Chiron raises his hand to his chin, "Ward... Ah, you must be the son of that man I sent a letter to a few years ago. So, you must be a son of Athena."
"Huh? How did you know that I was a son of Athena? Doesn't my mother have to claim me first" I questioned. You know, I never thought about it, but why would Chiron even give my dad a letter about the camp in the first place? Sally Jackson didn't get one.
"Oh, that's because I send a letter to all parents of children of Athena" Chiron explained, "It would be odd for them to find a random child on their doorstep" Huh, makes sense, "Now, young Odysseus, would you like to watch the orientation film?" The orientation film? Oh wait, the video Percy didn't watch.
"No thank you, Mr Chiron" I smiled, "I think I've got a general idea of how things work here" Better than general actually, but he doesn't need to know.
"That's good, but if you have any questions, you can ask me or your cabin head" Chiron quickly looked behind him, staring towards the brown-haired girl I saw earlier, "Miss Hart!" The girl looks to Chiron before jogging to us. Looking at her, I saw the bracelet around her arm, with 7 beads. That's quite a lot. I wonder how long she's been here.
"Hey there, Chiron" She says, "Let me guess. New sibling?"
"Clever as ever, Cassie" Chiron smiles. He then turns back to me, "Odysseus, this is the head of the Athena cabin, Cassie Hart. She'll help you get your bearings around the camp." I start walking towards Cassie, but Chiron puts a hand on my shoulder, "And Odysseus, do try to have fun here" And with that, he walks away. To be honest, I didn't expect much more than that. It's not like I was some kid who took down a minotaur.
Immediately, I feel my hair getting mutilated by the hands of my new cabin head, "Well aren't you just a cutie!" She laughs. I felt my cheeks get warm in embarrassment. Man, I hate being 8. "So, tell me a bit about yourself. What's your favourite colour? How about your favourite animals? What's with your hair?"
I internally groan. She's definitely got Athena's inquisitiveness. "Well, my name is Odysseus Ward, I'm 8, my favourite colour is green, I have an inexplicable love for snakes, and my hair is naturally white. Don't ask me how or why, because I've got no clue." I look to her face and see it hold a rather shocked expression.
"Well, look at you with the big words! You're a child of Athena, alright!" She praises, pinching my cheeks. Ouch, she has quite the grip. "Anyway, the hair isn't a big deal, most demigods have seen weirder stuff..." She then whispers into my ear, "I've heard of a former Apollo camper that had a sun birthmark on his face" I chuckled at the gossip.
After a walk full of banter, jokes, and gossip, we reached Cabin 6. Just by looking at it, I felt almost at peace, a smile on my face. It looked like a temple, with engravings of owls decorating it. "It looks brilliant" I mutter.
"Yeah, we all got that reaction when we first see it" Cassie chuckles, "Well, let's get in" And she pushes me forward into the door. Inside the cabin, lied many bunk beds, maybe 20 beds in total. Each bed had different posters and books around them, with paper all around the floor. "Yeah... we children of Athena are pretty messy"
"Understandable. My room is a garbage dump" I shrug. I threw my bag onto an empty bottom bunk that Cassie had pointed to. I was already thinking of ways I could deck it out. Maybe I could get hire the Hephaestus Cabin once I get some money.
"We haven't finished the tour yet, kid" Cassie interrupts me from my thinking, grabbing the back of my shirt and dragging me away from my bed before I could take measurements. "You see, our little cabin has three other parts inside it..." We walk to a bookcase, and she pushes a copy of "The Hiding Place" by Corrie Ten Bloom as if it were a button. An apt book for what I presume to be a secret room.
Instead of the bookcase swinging back like a door, or sinking into the ground, it remains still. However, I see a shimmer in its design. Cassie walks straight through it, dragging me along with her. It was a bit disconcerting, but interesting, nonetheless. "Woah. How did you guys get that to work out?" I asked curiously.
"Oh, the bookshelf? I heard a son of Hecate to set it up before he left camp, a century ago." She explains, "Anyway, this place is a secret we Cabin 6 members keep. A secret hidden floor where we do most of our planning, research, and creating." She opens a door to her right, revealing a room containing what seems like a never-ending sea of books, "This is our library, a place we're rather proud of. It's full of books donated by previous cabin members, scrolls gathered during quests, and mysterious texts that we have no idea what they mean."
"Whoa!" I shout with childlike glee. But before I could jump into and spend the next 60 years reading the books, Cassie grabbed me.
"Hold up there buster!" Cassie laughs, pulling me away from the rooms, "We've got the rest of the tour to see! You can read after that." We proceed to walk to another door, a bit further away. Opening it revealed a workshop, with equipment and materials. Nothing too interesting, personally. "This here is our workshop, where we create all sorts of items that can be used during quests or for camp. Instead of weapons, we make stuff like... this!" She grabs a ball from one of the shelves. "This little item is a plant grenade" At my confused look, she continued, "Basically, we were tired of other cabins having cool elemental powers, so we did our best to replicate them. We succeeded, however they cost too much to make" It does seem interesting though. Could we replicate a lightning bolt like Thalia's?
"Anyway, moving on!" Once again, Cassie dragged me away mid-thinking. I do hope this doesn't become a habit. She leads me to another room, at the end of the corridor. Opening the door, my jaw dropped at the sight. A pristine, white room stood in front of me. Microscopes and test tubes lied around on tables, some of the latter containing liquids. Just a glance at the test tube, I could immediately tell the chemical composition of the solutions. In the far corner stood an area which contained 10 laptops, all with wiring running into the walls, and research papers. The entire place looked like candy to my eye. "This is the Athena Cabin's greatest recent creation. The laboratory! Here we create new chemicals which we can incorporate into weapons or make medicine! Y'know, a lot of different pharmaceutical drugs were created in this very place!"
"Do the computers have Wifi?" I ask, curious. I was pretty sure that demigods couldn't use the internet.
"Yeah, that's a pretty beg secret." Cassie whispers conspiratorially, "When demigods make phone calls or use the internet, it basically sends a signal out to monsters telling them the demigod's location. But, we pulled a few strings and have a wifi box outside of camp, with a very long ethernet cable. And since the camp gets monsters attracted to it regardless, we didn't see a problem in it."
Okay, that makes sense, I guess. A little unfair for the other campers, but they should've thought of that idea.
Another question pops into my mind, "Shouldn't you also get the Apollo campers in this as well? 'Cuz if I remember correctly, Apollo is also the god of Medicine and healing." I questioned.
Cassie grimaced, "That's actually a pretty heated debate in the cabin. Some of us want to get the Apollo campers to help our efficiency, but others want to keep our secrecy. But I think those people just don't want to admit that they need the help of other campers. Pride is a fatal flaw for us Athena campers." She sighs, but bounces back up with a smile, "Well, I think that's enough for the tour! It's already pretty close to dinner time, so let's head to the mess hall!"
And so, we walk out of the cabin, walking to the large pavilion. It looks just like how I imagined it. Tall, marble pillars, torches holding titanic flames, and a brilliant view of the ocean. At the far side of the pavilion, I see Chiron, already seated. Next to him, my eyes widen, as I see my first God in this world. Dionysus. At first glance, he is unremarkable, a scraggly beard and messy hair, along with an unflattering yellow leopard shirt. Yet when you look into his deep blue eyes, you see millions of sights. Humans devolving to madness, gallons of wine drowning victims and leopards consuming their enemies. It is at that moment; one realises just how sane they are. It is at that moment you realise that you are looking at someone who fought and decimated an entire sub-continent.
I sit down on the Athena table, which one of the closest to the head table. Next to me, I sat between two others of my half siblings. I introduce myself to them, and they do so likewise. I hid my shock as the boy revealed himself to be Malcolm Pace, the future assistant councillor of the Athena Cabin. That's quite interesting. The girl next to me is called, Eda Hawthorne, who I believe wasn't mentioned in the books. She's about five years older than me, and has orange hair, not ginger, but actually orange. It was odd, but who am I to talk.
I look around to other tables to see if I could recognise anyone. By the Aphrodite table, I see a young girl around my age. Her black hair was long and silky, and it was as if she was the night itself. I realised that it must've been Silena Beaugard. I remind myself that I have to find a way to save her. Both her and Charles Beckendorf. They were heroes, and also my favourite romantic relationship in the books. I mean, Charlie waiting for her in Elysium was so adorable!
Unfortunately, Charlie hadn't arrived at camp yet, by the looks of it. But by the Hermes table, I see a two familiar faces, both gloomy. An Asian boy, with spiky, messy hair. Ethan Nakamura. Next to him, I see Chris Rodriguez, looking down at the table. So, they're both here. Maybe I can get them to be determined. Hmm...
However, I'm snapped from my thoughts as Chiron rises up from his seat, lifting a glass, "To the Gods!" He shouts, and everyone raises their glasses and say the same.
Just like in the books, wood nymph come up with platters of food. Once again, thank the gods I'm not going through puberty right now. I look down to my cup and say, "Man, I could really go for some coke" And suddenly my cup is filled with coke. I knew that would happen; however, I couldn't pretend to already know it. "Woah! Can I get green coke?" And suddenly my coke turns into an emerald liquid, "Hmm... What about rainbow coke?" Once again, the liquid in my cup changes into a rainbow. "Cool!"
"Huh, you figured that out quickly" Malcolm says, looking at me astonished, "I had to ask one of the older campers about how it worked."
"Guess I'm just amazing like that!" I joke, with a fake smug smile. I grab some of the BBQ meat, along with cheese, bread, and vegetables. Those around me start to stand up, and Malcolm explains to me that we were going to sacrifice a portion to a god, as if I didn't know (Though, to be fair, I wasn't meant to already know). I grab the largest looking slab of steak from my plate and carry it to the flames. Throwing it, I pray, "Hello again, mother. Hope you liked the roast chicken from last time. Just wanted to ask if you could like give me a boost for when I help the undetermined kids. Thanks."
I wonder if Athena is a vegetarian.
After sacrificing the food, Dionysus gets up from his seat, "Hey, problem children" He burps out, "Capture the flag is tomorrow, and Cabin 6 has the laurels, you know how it is" Even with the less than enthusiastic announcement, my cabin still cheered, "Yes, yes, woo hoo. Now, we have a new camper with us, so say hi to Obadiah Work" Damn bro, that's not even close to my name! Chiron whispers into Mr D's ear, "I mean, Odysseus Ward. The name I made is better though. Anyway, go do your fun activities or whatever"
After dinner, most of the camp went to the Ampitheatre, however I sneaked away. Instead, I walk to the fire pit in the middle of the cabin area. There, tending to the fire pit, stood a young-looking girl with auburn hair, wearing a white tunic, like in depictions of the Greek Gods. This girl, however, was in fact the Goddess Hestia.
I walk up to her, "Hey, there" I say, "I didn't see you at the pavilion. Aren't you hungry?" I decided that I would go with clueless child act. There was no excuse I could give to explain why I knew she was Hestia.
"No, not particularly child" she says, a smile on her face. "I'm surprised you're talking to me. Most people don't recognise that I'm here"
"Child!" I exclaimed, offended, "We're probably the same age! And why wouldn't people see that you're here?"
"It's usually because I don't want them to" She lets out a little laugh, "So it's quite a surprise you're here, Odysseus"
"Hey! How do you know my name if you weren't at the pavilion! At least tell me your name" I demand, not rudely, but childishly, since I was in fact, a child.
"Okay then, my name is Hestia" She simply says.
"Huh, Hestia. That's a weird name. Isn't that a Greek Goddess... Oh" I look to her, feigning shock, "U-Uh sorry, Lady Hestia! I'll be out of your hair" I've said it once, and I'll say it again, I should be the god of acting!
"No, no! It's okay" She soothes, "It's nice to meet a new member of the family. You can call me Aunt Hestia, if you want."
"O-okay" We continue talking, and to be honest, it's really comforting, like I'm actually talking to a family member. Whilst it may seem like a useless decision to talk to Hestia, she was probably close to all the Olympians, so she had a sway over all of them. That could be useful should I be in a predicament.
I eventually bid adieu and go into cabin 6 for sleep. I lie in my bed, a smile on my face. I'm Camp Half-Blood and it feels like a crazy, awesome dream to me. Nothing could ruin it.
However, I forgot Demigod dreams.
~~Dream Start~~
Two male figures are talking to one another, one slightly aggravated. Both have giant white wings, big as an adult. They wear hoods to obscure their face, yet I feel an aura of familiarity coming from them.
"Look, Gabe" One of the figures says. They hold a large sword, which glints in the light as if it were made of fire, "It's been two centuries, and we still haven't found him. None of the cherubs are getting any clues! Look at the state of the planet. Humans have desecrated our lord's creation."
The other figure sighs, "I-I concede. It's been too long. I've tried to be patient, hoping his son would step up, and yet nothing. What would you propose we do, brother Michael"
Michael grins, "I've had an idea for a while." He pulls out several leaflets and brochures, "I think we should hire warriors from the other... religions, like demigods. Issue it as a quest"
'Gabe' puts his hand on a cheek, "That's not a bad idea... who do you suggest?"
"Well, the Japanese demigods are out already. Too pricey. Same for Romans." Michael throws two of the brochures away, "The Einherjar are cheap, but really low success rate, and we both know the Egyptian Nomes would rather jump off a bridge than talk with us. And I don't even think I need to mention the Celtic or Native American demigods!"
"And that leaves us with...?"
"The Greeks! Great success rate, and pretty cheap" Michael says, passing a leaflet.
"Well, let's hope your plan works" Gabe sighs once more.
"Don't worry. They'll find Lord Yahweh before Lucifer does"
~~Dream End~~
I shoot up from my bed, sweating. What the shit was that!
