Chapter 35: Destiny Islands- Fair
"So, we're heading to the islands first?" Briana mused. "Probably a good place to go and think."
"There's nothing to think about. I'm not doing it." Yurisa grumbled.
"Even though this could be a world-shattering thing?"
"This dragon can find someone else to do their work for them." The ship stopped over the islands, the girl immediately walking to head down, leaving the star shard behind.
Briana grabbed it, sticking it in her coat. "Let's give her some time."
Leaning back in her chair, Vanette closed her eyes. "So we just wait?"
"Nope." The young guard smiled, walking toward the back. "Let's get ready. We can take an inventory of all we have on the ship, and then we can go down and pick up supplies. Deki, you'll probably need materials for making more gadgets, right?"
He nodded. "Good idea. While we wait for Yuri, let's get to work."
Yurisa threw herself on her bed, burying her face in the pillow. "Stupid dragon. Stupid dream. I didn't want this! It's not fair! Why would it even pick me!?"
"Life isn't always fair." Sora stood in the doorway with Kairi. They walked over, laying their hands on her shoulders. "We understand."
Kairi gently smoothed the girl's hair. "I know how it feels to have no control, or to feel like it. I felt the same way as a little girl as my parents… died before my eyes. I couldn't understand why I had been given a gift that people would come after me for. It wasn't fair… I know… And we know you don't want this."
"I'm not going to do it. I won't. Going out for a week to see and meet people is one thing, but a giant adventure with new powers, this sounds like the whole Keyblade thing again. I don't want a life of fighting."
Sora softly squeezed her shoulder. "That's understandable. But, maybe you should take some time. Think about why you were chosen. What do you bring to the table that no one else does? And maybe try and contact the dragon. Ask him why."
"And how do I do that!?"
"There's no need to yell." Kairi's voice chided softly. "Trust your heart. You can do this."
The girl let out a frustrated scream into the pillow before sitting up. "I'm going to the play island."
Slipping out from between her parents, she walked downstairs and out the door. Sora and Kairi sat on the bed, her father letting out a long sigh. "I know we've kind of let her get away with a few more childish behaviors due to her upbringing, but I feel like she was on the verge of a tantrum."
"Maybe, but she still doesn't really know how to cope with things like that. She grew up having to hide it or just accept it. Now that she has a choice, she hasn't had a moment when this new life has been interrupted. We've done our best to make sure these last three years have been good and calm for her. But real life isn't always that way. She'll just have to learn… probably the hard way." Standing up, Kairi glanced out the window. "I think she'll be fine. This is just a hard process for her."
Sora stood beside her, kissing his wife on the cheek. "Well, if she's anything like you, she'll be alright."
"I know she will be."
Pulling her little boat up to the dock, the girl tied it off before climbing out. School was in session today, so no one else was here.
She kicked off her socks and shoes, carrying them in her hands as she walked along the beach, letting the cool water lap at her toes.
This was her favorite place on this world.
Quiet.
Peaceful.
Dropping her shoes on the sand, she walked up to the cave her parents called the Secret Place. Sora showed it to her as soon as he could when she came back.
The dark walls softly slick with moss closed around her as she walked inside. In the dim light coming through a hole in the ceiling, she could see the chalk drawings made by her parents and uncle. A few from Kyo as well.
Near a weird door in the wall, which according to her parents led to the heart of the world, she sat beside a drawing. Her hand ran over the chalk drawing her mother and father made as children.
Where they drew each other, and later drew them giving a paopu fruit to one another.
Below that, a child's drawing of another boy smiled up at her.
Kyo's addition to the drawing.
But in the three years she'd lived here, she never added a picture of herself. Leaning against the wall, she stared up at the light slipping through the holes above.
"Hey, stupid dragon… if you want to explain things to me, you better do it. Either that or I'm doing nothing. Nothing at all."
Her eyes watched vines and hanging leaves dancing in the wind that flowed inside.
She watched them move back and forth, lulling her eyes to close on their own.
"You are such a geek!" Vanette giggled as she held up a bag of different parts.
Hideaki smirked. "I've been called worse." He looked over, waving. "There's Aunt Kairi!"
The woman waved back from where she sat on the porch of their house, a cup in her hand. "Waiting on Yuri?" She asked as she sipped on some tea.
"Yeah, where is she?"
"She went to the play island. Just be patient. I know she'll come around."
Briana sat beside her. "I agree. Where is Miste- I mean, Uncle Sora?"
"He went to talk to the principal and let the school know what's going on. That way the kids can make it up later. Then, he's going to go check on Yuri."
"Do you think she'll be alright?"
"She's just having to take another new step." Kairi sipped on her tea. "She will be fine." Her eyes glanced over all the bags. "Stocking up?"
Vanette nodded. "There was a ton of food on the ship, so food is no issue." She giggled, wrapping her arms around Hideaki's neck. "It's all for this gearhead."
The boy's face flushed bright red. "NETTIE!?"
"What?"
"What are you doing?"
"Hugging you."
"Why?"
"I want to."
Briana's shoulders shook as she laughed. "Nettie, do you know how to flirt subtly?"
"FLIRT!?" Hideaki's red face deepened.
The girl released his neck, eyes sparkling. "What is this subtly you speak of? I prefer to do everything my way, which is to hide absolutely nothing."
The boy fiddled with one of his gloves, avoiding her gaze. "Maybe warn me first. That would be easier on me. Or at least ask me before you drape me in a hug."
"So, you're ok with it if I ask first?"
Pulling down his goggled over his eyes, the boy nodded. "Y-yeah…"
"Ok."
"And maybe not in public-"
Kairi and Briana smirked, watching the two go back and forth over what was considered PDA; the mother looked around at the kids, but found her gaze drawn to the island… where her daughter was.
Yurisa found herself sitting in a strange room. She blinked, rubbing her eyes as the unfamiliar landscape around her came into focus.
"Oh no… where am I now?"
A few people ran toward her.
"Excuse m-"
The people passed right through her. She yelped, glancing around.
"Wait… is this… a dream?" Taking a deep breath she nodded to herself. Just a dream.
"Grandma! We're almost there!" Came a small voice. Yurisa looked up to see an old woman and young girl coming from behind her. Her eyes widened. She'd seen that girl before, in a photo.
It was her mother.
The younger version of Kairi pulled away from the old woman and ran ahead, toward Yuri.
The girl could only watch as a silver-haired man appeared behind the old woman, running her through with a sword.
Little Kairi turned around.
"GRANDMA!"
Xehanort, as he had to be, stood over the fallen body of Kairi's grandmother; Yuri's great-grandmother. "Princess." His eyes met Kairi's. "It is an honor."
"G-GRANDMA!?" Yurisa felt her stomach tighten; her mother couldn't have been more than five years old here, maybe six. "Xe-Xehanort… why!?"
The image before the girl swirled, causing Yuri to pull back, blinking her eyes.
Now, she saw something different. Her father, as no one else had hair like that, sat in a room with… was that Mr. Squall and Miss Yuffie?
"What happened to my home!?" Sora cried out, his voice cracking with fear and confusion. "My island!? Riku? Kairi?"
Again, things changed before her. Her father, slightly older now, stood back-to-back with Donald and Goofy in what seemed to be the Great Maw of Radiant Garden. Heartless pressed in on them. Her father's face seemed… broken.
A look that made her stomach churn to see.
"Maybe everything we've done… maybe it was for nothing…"
Again, the world changed.
Her father, somehow looking younger again, stood between two men in black coats.
One, she didn't recognize, with long silver hair.
The other, she knew all too well: the eyepatch and the scar on his face still burned in her dreams.
Her father, his face holding a twinge of sadness, tightened his grip on his Keyblade. "I know the Keyblade didn't choose me, and I don't care. I'm proud to be a small part of something bigger- The people it did choose."
One moment after another.
Her parents, fighting to keep going. Sometimes together, sometimes apart.
As the last image faded, Yurisa found herself standing in a forest, a familiar one.
From another dream.
"I know… life isn't fair. But that shouldn't stop you." Came a deep, gentle voice.
She turned, looking up into the face-
Of a dragon.
Hope you enjoyed!
