When the ship goes down, and Luke is left adrift, trusted with the life of a newborn baby, he doesn't know when he'll be rescued, or if he will. He does know, however, that he has to do everything to make sure this little girl survives. My take on the time between Luke's ship going down, and the rescue in Episode 20 of the anime.
