After rejecting Instrumentality, Shinji wakes up on the beach alone. Given the chance to choose, many familiar faces return to rebuild the world NERV and SEELE near destroyed. Except one. Shinji has dreamed about the death of one of his classmates, and feels guilty about it.

A veteran of the impact wars is unwittingly roped into NERV's fight against the Angels, and finds himself increasingly entangled in the lives of the people he finds there.
