Acacia, Ace, Swan was dreading tomorrow. Tomorrow was the first day of her sophomore year at Forks High and she just didn't want to deal with it. Being the sheriff's daughter in a town as small as Forks was exhausting. Half the kids at school tried to suck up to her to get on her father's good side and the other half treated her as a snitch as if they thought that if they stepped one toe out of line then she'd go running to daddy and get them arrested. Everyone in high school were so superficial, immature, and stupid. Ace couldn't stand it.
There was only one person that Ace considers her friend and that person didn't even go to the same school as her! Leah Clearwater was her best friend and has been since she was in diapers and Jacob fucken Black dump mud all over her. Leah punched Jacob in the face and the two have been as thick as thieves ever since.
Leah was a few years older than Ace, but that never bothered either of them. Leah was the sister Ace always wanted. Leah was everything Ace wanted to be. Strong, independent, confident. To top it all off she was surprisingly very smart. People thought she was just some tomboy, but she was actually borderline genius. She was far too smart for this Rez never mind this tiny town. She could go places and as much as Ace would love to always have Leah here, she hopes one day Leah will rise to her full potential.
For the entire summer the two girls were rarely apart. They were both dreading school because that meant an end to days spent together. Today was their last day of freedom and it was spent watching Sam Uley sweat over the shed he was repairing in the Clearwater's backyard. Sam was Leah's boyfriend. Sam was a few years older than Leah and the two have been dating now since Leah was a Freshman, three years ago. Sam had always been a rather gangly kid. He was skinny and seemed to have been still growing into his long arms and legs, but recently he seemed to have gone through a second wind of puberty. He had grown taller than ever, now easily towering over Leah, who was pretty tall herself. He had developed a rather alarming increase of muscles. He looked as if he hit the gym regularly, which wasn't a bad thing and was totally working for him, but this all seemed to happen overnight. He wasn't like this a week ago.
"I'm just glad I'm graduating this year." Ace pulls her eyes off Sam and looks at Leah.
"What are you doing about college?"
"I'm going to take a year to think about what I want to do." She played with the engagement ring on her finger. That was another new event to happen. Sam had proposed two weeks ago and Ace has yet to see her best friend happier. She had a permanent glow to her and a smile that resembles a banana. Ace was happy for her friend, but a part of her was worried. She had been three years old when her parents' marriage fell apart. While she couldn't remember that time she knows of the aftermath. She knew Sam and Leah loved each other, but she worried about it falling apart. She knew Leah would be destroyed if things didn't work out with Sam.
"Have you guys figured out a date yet?" Ace asks.
"Not yet. We know that we want to wait until after I graduate, but we're not sure how soon after."
"You have time." Ace shrugs.
"Of course you're going to be my maid of honor." Ace scoffs.
"As if you'd consider anyone else."
"Well, there is my cousin, Emily."
"Exactly, cousin. I'm the best friend. You and I swore on blood that we would be each other's best friend for life. BFF before anyone else, even Uley."
"Hey!" The girls ignored Sam's outraged cry.
"Blood?" Leah snorts.
"Yes, Black's nose was like a fountain that day."
"Ew." Leah laughs. "But it's true."
"Damn straight." Leah grins before Ace gave a groan. "Ugh, I really don't want to go to school tomorrow."
"It won't be that bad."
"So you say. You have a much smaller school and those students at least have some brains." Leah raises an eyebrow. "Okay, well it's not like you're the chief's daughter like Black is." Leah nods in agreement.
"Yeah, Rebecca does have it rough."
"Rebecca? I mean Jacob." Leah laughs.
"You're awful." Ace just shrugs with a grin.
Ace looked like such a contrast to Leah and the other Quilettes, but the Rez was like a second home for her. Ace was as pale as freshly fallen snow. Her hair was as vibrant red like fire and it fell in loose curls to the middle of her back. Her eyes are a vibrant green like mint. She was average height, 5'5" with a slender frame with delicate curves. Face of an angel, soul of a demon.
Ace and Leah made for a deadly pair. It wasn't a smart move to pick a fight with the two girls. Sam had been on the receiving end of the two girls' rage once and it was a mistake he swore he would never make again.
"I have to get home." Ace sighs as she looks at the time on her phone. "Dad will be home soon and I have to make dinner." Ace was a tough girl, but she was a big daddy's girl. Her father worked a lot. Being the sheriff of a small town wasn't as easy as one would believe. So Ace tried to do what she could to help her father out. She has learned to cook and bake and has taken to making all the meals. It's not good for her father's cloustrol to eat greasy diner food all the time. She always makes sure everything in the house is clean that way her father has as little to stress about as possible.
"Okay, but we are doing something tomorrow after school." Leah says.
"No shit. I'm going to need lots of ice cream and Eric Northman to get through the rest of the week."
"Please Sam Merlotte is so much better."
"Bias!" Ace points at Leah in mock outrage. Leah laughs.
"What can I say? I like dogs." Ace snorts.
"I prefer my men with some pale skin and sharp teeth."
"Well you need someone paler than you to make yourself feel normal."
"Bitch."
"Jerk." The two girls share a grin.
"You two are so fucked up." Sam says as he takes Leah's water to drink.
"You okay?" Leah asks as he drains her water in two gulps.
"Yeah, I'm just really warm. And starving. Can you make me something to eat LeeLee."
"Are you sure you're okay? You're burning up." Leah says as she feels his forehead.
"I think I'm just a bit overheated."
"Go take a shower. I'll get you some food and a gatorade." Leah says.
"Don't push yourself too much, Uley. You still need to marry my girl." Sam laughs.
"You take care of yourself too. My girl needs you up there that day, Swan."
"Hey!" Ace points her finger at Sam. "She's my girl." Leah rolls her eyes.
"I'm nobody's girl." Sam and Ace exchange a look. "Oh shut up. Go take a shower Sammy, you smell."
"Love you too, LeeLee." Sam kisses her and makes his way inside.
"Tomorrow, ice cream, Northman, your place." Ace says as she begins to walk backwards.
"It's a date."
"See! You're my girl." Leah just rolls her eyes.
Ace walks to her beat up old Honda car and gets in. The car was kind of Old Quil's old car that he sold for a good price. She managed to force Jacob to fix it up for her. Her and Jacob weren't friends. They had a bad relationship since the day Jacob dumped mud on her. They weren't nemeses, that title was reserved for Brooklyn Mallory, but her and Jacob were enemies. They did not get all and fought like cats and dogs and it always ended with Jacob crying.
Ace drove home and made quick work of making a chicken dinner for her father for when he gets home. "Hey, Cia, something smells good." Cia was a name only Charlie calls her. Ace got her name from the tree that spontaneously started growing in their backyard. An acacia tree. Charlie saw that as a sign. The tree was all surrounded by wild roses, which gave Charlie her middle name. The names were rather fitting. Acacia means thorny tree and everyone knows Roses are beautiful but have a nasty bite. It's exactly what she was, beautiful but sharp.
"Hey, daddy. I made roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and a salad." Charlie made a face at the mention of a salad. "It's good for you, daddy, don't argue. I did make you some cookies for after dinner, but you're only allowed two."
"Two?!"
"They're good size."
"Who's the parent here?" Ace raises an eyebrow.
"And who made the cookies? I can deliver them over to the Clearwaters first thing in the morning if you rather. Sam is practicing eating them out of house and home."
"Three."
"This isn't a negotiation, dad." Charlie huffs. Ace grins.
"Two and a half." Charlie grins.
"Deal." Ace snickers and makes up their plates. Charlie took his boots off by the door and hung up his belt. She places the plates down as Charlie grabs a beer and a can of soda from the fridge. "How's your day?"
"Good. I spent it at Leah ogling Uley." Charlie chokes on his beer, coughing harshly. Ace grins. "You okay?"
"One of these days, Cia, you're going to kill me." Ace shrugs with a grin.
"Love you." He huffs.
"Love you too, kid." The two ate dinner and talked about their respective days. Charlie had always been more on the awkward side. He had a hard time expressing his emotions, but he had always been a good dad. The two had a close relationship, which made them comfortable in each other's presence. There is no awkwardness between them. They understood one another better than anyone else. It was the two of them against the world.
"I'm thinking of going fishing with Billy next weekend. Did you want to join us?" Fishing was something that Ace actually found enjoyable. Most would find it boring, but Ace enjoys the quiet and peacefulness that comes with being on a boat for hours in silence, just catching fish and enjoying the sound of nature. However, Ace wasn't a fan of Jacob and he has taken to going on the fishing trips whenever Ace decides to go just to piss her off. Their fathers are still determined to try to mend the bridge between Ace and Jacob. Too bad for them. The bridge was smashed, blown up, and ignited. There is no repairing that bridge. If it had just been the mud throwing then Ace would have just forgotten it because they were just kids, but Jacob has been a thorn in her ass for years. He enjoys pissing her off and she enjoys punching him in the face.
"I don't know… fishing with Jacob Black, who will no doubt try to push me into the lake again or hang out with Leah and watch sexy shirtless vampires? That is a tough choice." Charlie grimaces.
"I wish I had at least one son."
"Oh, please, I wouldn't be any better if I was a boy." Charlie just shakes his head. "And if you didn't already know the answer. I chose to watch hot vampire sex." Charlie chokes on his beer.
"Acacia!"
"What?" She gives him an innocent look.
"Erg, you're leading me to an early grave."
"Don't say that. I work too hard to keep you healthy." She says. He makes a face at the salad.
"That," He points at the salad. "Is not healthy. It's an abomination."
"You're dramatic."
"And you're sadistic." Ace rolls her eyes.
"Yes and you love me anyways."
"Wouldn't have you any other way, kid." He says with gruff affection. She smiles and the two finish their dinner thankfully with no more about Eric Northman. Once they finish their dinner Ace grabs their dishes and put them in the sink, motioning for Charlie to put a game on. While he gets settled in the living room Ace makes quick work of the dishes and cleaning up after cooking. Once that was done she joined her father. She curls up with a book, while he watches a game. She didn't like sports, but the two of them enjoyed the silent companionship during the night like this. If either one wanted to talk than the other would gladly listen, but mostly it was just enough to know the other was there.
