Chapter 1

Laura was afraid for her husband. He, like all the other true Avengers, who had fought for their freedom and the safety of the world, had disappeared after their capture in Leipzig. It was as if the ground had swallowed them.

Cooper and Lila watched their mother full of concern. They, like her, were also very upset about the reports on television, which only told lies about their father.

Suddenly a signal rang out in the house that Laura recognized instantly as an alarm signal. Someone had activated one of the warning systems, Clint had installed on the property and around the house.

Laura fetched a gun from its hiding place, one of many hidden caches distributed throughout the house. Clint liked to be prepared. "Cooper, Lila, take Nathaniel downstairs to the panic room. You will only leave it when I tell you too and give you the correct code."

Clint, bless his paranoid heart, had done safety drills with his family until everyone knew the procedure by heart and could do it in their sleep.

The two older children followed Laura's instructions without protest and took their youngest brother downstairs.

Laura heard the security door of the panic room activate, her children were now safe. With a tense face, she released the safety catch of the gun and hid in a corner, from where she could see all the entrance doors.

Less than a minute later, a group of at least 20 soldiers came through all the doors at once, all men wearing the symbol of Hydra on their shoulders.

Laura shot the first man down but she had no chance against the battle-hardened soldiers. The gun was snatched from her hand and two men had grabbed her by the upper arms so that she could not escape, not, that she would do so.

"Where are your kids?" asked the man harshly, who appeared to be the leader.

"I have no idea", Laura replied flippantly.

"Search the house!" He ordered his people, who immediately dispersed. "What about Benders?"

"He'll survive", replied one of the soldiers who tended to the man Laura had shot.

Now there were only Laura, the leader and six other men left in the living room.

"How did you find us?" Laura asked fearlessly.

"Mr. Stark was kind enough to point out your existence to us, he spoke of you in a supervised environment and we can react faster than the government, who want you and your children too.

Stark was a little upset that your husband is on the side of Captain Rogers and helped him with his righteous cause." The man grinned maliciously. "Stark probably wanted to take revenge for this. It's a pity that Stark was never recruited by Hydra, he would be a perfect addition for us. No morals, no conscience! It was unwise to let him know about this place."

Laura thought of Elijah who had said something similar and who had predicted that Stark would betray them like that. She suddenly wished, she had thought of calling him after Clint had been arrested. She knew, where Clint had hidden the burner phone but now could she no longer get her hands on it.

But as it turned out, that was unnecessary, because suddenly stood Elijah behind the leader and snapped brutally his neck. Before the other Hydra agents could react, they shared the fate of their leader.

Laura remembered again what Clint had said to her about Elijah's dangerousness and speed.

Elijah now stood in front of her and put his index finger on her mouth, Laura nodded. Elijah gave her a fleeting smile, then tilted his head to one side and listened. Then he stalked to the cellar door and went in the basement.

Laura listened intently but she couldn't hear anything, no screams, no gunshots, but just a minute later Elijah came back before going upstairs next.

This time Laura could hear screams and gunshots, but they too stopped very quickly.

When Elijah came back downstairs, his suit had bullets holes and he was smeared with blood. "Are you alright?" He inquired worriedly. "Sorry about this mess but I had no time for a more discreet approach. I heard of the attack much too late, to be here before the Hydra agents."

"Yes I'm fine! Thank you, Elijah!" Laura hugged him relieved, she didn't care one bit that her clothes were now smeared with blood as well. "That was really rescue at the last second."

Elijah smiled at her. "We must hurry. I already eliminated the men who stood guard outside. But if nobody sends a success message and this unit no longer responds, their superiors will guaranteed send a second unit."

"But where can we go?" Laura was desperate. She was a tough woman, her marriage to Clint had made sure of that, but she never expected one of Clint's friends to betray his family to his enemies like this. "They said that not only Hydra is after us but the government as well."

"I'll take you to one of my hiding spots, it's about a three hour drive from here. My siblings don't know it about it either and no vampire can enter it except me." Elijah hesitated. "But you can only take the most necessary things with you."

"There are emergency bags for every child and me in the closets in the respective rooms. Clint has already his bag taken with him." Laura hesitated, her gaze anxious. "Do you know anything about his whereabouts?"

"Yeah I know where he is held prisoner." Elijah scowled angrily. "His condition, and especially Wanda's, are not good, but they are alive. And I have already an idea how to get them out of there but I need your assistance for this."

Laura breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good to hear. And of course I will assist you in any way."

"There are corpses in the basement, but no blood because I simply snapped their necks. If you want, I can dispose the bodies first before you get the kids out of the panic room." Elijah hesitated for a moment. "And under no circumstances should your children go upstairs, it got a little bloody there."

"No", Laura decided after a brief consideration. "If we have as little time as you say, we can't risk this!" Her children were strong, they could bear it.

Elijah eyed her. "As you wish! But maybe you should take the time to change your clothes, otherwise your kids may be worried." Elijah looked down at himself. "And perhaps Clint could spare some of his clothes for me too. The bullets holes could be a little difficult to explain to your children, I don't want to burden them with this knowledge, what I am."

"Of course, help yourself, Elijah."

"Okay, then let's go." Elijah smiled at her and Laura followed him upstairs.

Laura looked with wide eyes at the corpses, which were strewn in every room. Beside them lay their weapons, not that they had been of much use to them and their terrified faces told Laura that they had known what had killed them. The bloody holes in their chests, where their hearts should be, revealed the cause of their death. If Laura looked very carefully, which she didn't want, she would undoubtedly see the hearts next to the dead bodies.

While Laura selected from Clint's closet a trouser, t-shirt and leather jacket for Elijah, Elijah got the children's emergency bags. Elijah thanked her with a smile when she gave the clothes to him. Then they both quickly changed before they went back downstairs with the emergency bags.

"Where are your car keys? I parked my SUV a few miles from here that we can use for the rest of the journey. We should drive there with your car." Elijah thought about it. "Maybe we should drive a few miles with both cars before we ditch your car, so there will be no leads to me."

"In the hall on the bowl", Laura answered. "But let me get the kids first. I want to introduce you to them and tell them that they can trust you in case we get separated."

"All right, I'll put the bags in the car. You will need a little time to prepare them for the dead."

Laura looked at the dead bodies in the living room. The children had to go through here if they wanted to leave the house. In addition to the dead in the basement, it was imperative that she prepared her children for this sight. "Good objection, see you soon!"

Laura went downstairs. She pressed the talk button. "It is me, children." Laura used the agreed code sentence. "I come in."

As soon as Laura entered the panic room, her children pounced on her and hugged her.

"We heard gunshots and screams", said Cooper in panic. "Did they hurt you?"

"No, I'm fine and we are now safe. A friend of your father showed up to help us." Laura eyed her children seriously. "We don't have much time before reinforcements arrive for the Hydra agents. If you go outside, you will see a lot of dead people. Elijah had no other choice, he had to protect us."

Cooper frowned. "I don't remember Dad ever mentioning that name."

Laura smiled softly. "He didn't, not even towards me. I've only seen him once. Do you remember how we let you stay overnight with your friends a few months ago?"

Cooper and Lila nodded eagerly. After that night, her parents hadn't been so anxious to keep them close and had given them again more freedom.

"That's when I met him. He brought important information to your father that achieved an important victory against Hydra. So I know we can trust him. And if something happen or you get separated from me, you both will do what he says."

"Okay, Mom." Cooper looked at her with alert eyes and Lila nodded too.

"He will take us to a safe hiding place that only he knows. As soon as he has brought us to safety, he will do everything possible to save your father."

"He knows, where Dad is?" asked Lila relieved.

"Yes, he has interesting contacts that keep him up to date. Are you ready?" Laura looked seriously at her children.

Cooper and Lila nodded solemnly.

Laura went to the blanket, Nathaniel was lying on, and picked him up. "Then let's go!"

Laura and her children went upstairs. She covered Nathaniel's eyes, but she couldn't protect her older children from the sight.

Cooper and Lila looked around in dismay, frightened by the amount of the dead. Her parents had always as much as possible shielded them from Clint's work.

"How did they find us?" Cooper asked disturbed.

"Tony Stark has told everyone that we exist." Laura was still angry. If she ever saw Stark again, she would make him pay for putting her children in danger.

Cooper looked thoughtful. "Dad must be so angry and disappointed."

"Yes, I think, he is." Laura put a hand on his shoulder.

"I hope Dad makes him pay", Lila said indignantly.

"Nice to see that your children have the same sense of right and wrong as you and Clint", said Elijah amused, as he walked through the door.

Laura laughed brittle. "We taught them moral and decency, yes. Everything stowed away?"

"Yes, we can go", Elijah answered seriously. He turned and went back out.

Laura followed, relieved that she could get her children out of the house. She saw that Elijah was waiting in front of the car. "Cooper, Lila, this is Elijah."

Elijah smiled at the children. "I am looking forward to getting to know you."

"Hello Elijah", said Cooper, trying to sound as adult as possible. Lila waved to Elijah, who returned the wave.

"Get in, children", said Laura. She wanted to get away from here.

Elijah got behind the wheel and drove off while Laura looked back at her home. Who knew if she would ever see it again? She vowed at that moment that she would find a way to make Stark atone for his misdeeds.
