A Blue Period drabble

"It's because I hate painting."
Her own words echoed in her head long after walking away from Yaguchi. She had to ask her shift manager to repeat the change in schedule once before hanging up, even, so distracted was Ayano by that encounter in the library. But, the moment her job woes were settled, she let her mind devote her full attention to what she'd said when Yaguchi clarified his question about her preferred type of art.
"It's because I hate painting."
Hmm. How…honest of her. How…rare. Was this a sign of personal growth? She wondered as a breeze caught her hair outside the library and she pushed a bushy mass out of her eyes.
Was this semester all that different from last? There was no festival to worry about, at least. But, during the festival prep, Yaguchi and Tanashi both had picked up on and even pointed out that Ayano had a difficult time speaking her mind, especially since Ayano liked to handle things herself, to take on as much as she could, no matter the burden.
So why had she been so honest with Yaguchi just now?
"It's because I hate painting."
She glanced over her shoulder as she left campus, peeking at the library. She wondered how much more she would've said if she'd stuck around to prolong her chat with Yaguchi. After all, quite a few in their class tended to gravitated towards him. Yaguchi Yatora… Even Kinemi spoke with and of him often.
Ara, her heart softened at the thought of her sporty friend.
Kinemi.
"It's because I hate painting."
Ayano snorted as she thought over her words now. An oil painting student who hated painting—it was so obvious to anyone to ask next what she was doing in the program if she had no desire for it. But, no, that wasn't the right phrasing, "no desire," Ayano thought as Kinemi waved to her across the courtyard and jogged to catch up to her by Geidai's main gate.
"Ayano-chan! Off to work, yeah?" Kinemi asked as she fell into step with her.
"Yeah," Ayano replied. "From library to work to diving into books at home to work on my exhibition." She stuck her ungloved hands in her skirt's pockets and scooched closer to Kinemi. "You?"
"Straight home to power nap and then work on my project, too," Kinemi said with a vibrant laugh. She walked closer to Ayano, too, unconsciously; the warmth of her arm each time they bumped into each other was pleasant. "You aren't taking extra shifts, though, right? This is a huge project we have on our hands…" Kinemi let her words trail off and her eyes wander to her friend's face.
Ayano smiled and stifled a chuckle. "That's not how this works, Kinemi-chan. I'm supposed to be the worrywart in this relationship, remember?" she teased.
As expected, Kinemi's cheeks took on some extra color aside from what the autumn chill caused. She spluttered and threw her hands up in a placating manner. "AH! UM! I mean—!" She bowed her head. "Ahhhhhh, I'm always so grateful for how you look after me, Ayano-chan…! But let me look after you, too…!"
"It just wouldn't be the same," Ayano confessed. Her smile remained on her lips, but the truth in these words, too, gave Ayano pause. No…of course it wouldn't be the same. But Kinemi didn't (and probably would never) know that.
Kinemi watched her with wide eyes, curious and waiting to see if Ayano had more to say.
But Ayano had said far too much today already. So she merely linked her arm through Kinemi's and enjoyed the grin that followed all the way to their parting at the train station.
"It's because I hate painting."
Of course she had seen the next question forming in Yaguchi's eyes—but why tell him before the object of her affections that Ayano had chosen oil painting to remain by Kinemi's side?

UGH, yasss. You know a series has you when you write a fic when you rly should be sleeping. XP I honestly enjoy BP so much for the charries and friendships that I'm not rly zeroed in on many ships, but two in particular have their hooks in me, and these girls esp got me good, so I wrote Ayano and Kinemi for my first BP fic! :D With only 40 chapters read so far, I have so much to digest and yet only so much to work with, and I'm? (Also pls that ch36-40 arc ruined me, kthx.) But srsly Ayano's chat with Yatora in the library just. Insp'd this piece bc of her closeness with Kinemi. Idk if, ch41 or after, Ayano gets explained, but still! A fun little story, and something fun to kick off my next 100 stories on FFN~ (Not to mention, it's a lot of fun to doodle the BP kiddos? GAH!)
Thanks for reading, and please review! Check out my other fics if you enjoyed this~
