Worried that his son might be feeling left out since the new baby had arrived, Nick took Kelly with him to pick out the tree.
The little boy was very excited, and felt grown up, to go with his dad to find the family's tree for Christmas.
Adalind, Diana, and baby Catherine were snug and warm back at the house, giving the boys of the family a chance to spend some quality time together, just the two of them.
Nick hadn't even invited any of his friends, in order to focus solely on Kelly.
Father and son had matching smiles on their faces as they searched for something that would be perfect for their home.
Making a day of it, Nick got them hot chocolate and cookies from a food truck while they were out.
A five year old with a sugar high might have been exhausting for other parents, but not for a grimm who had survived a cracher de mortal attack and had gotten increased stamina and endurance because of it.
The two grimms chased each other around trees, ducking and rolling out of reach when the other got too close.
By the end of the day, which was about four thirty, Kelly had been worn out so much that he dozed off in the truck and Nick had to carry him into the house.
"Looks like you guys had a good day today." Adalind's voice was soft and tender as she gazed lovingly at her son sleeping in his father's arms.
"It was a great day." Nick kept his voice low, so he wouldn't disturb his little boy. "Did you girls have a nice day?"
"Apart from reminding Diana that she's not allowed to make her siblings fly, we binged watched Holiday cooking shows, and then made plans to make some of the things we saw."
"Sounds like we both had a productive day." Nick grinned, giving his wife a peck on the lips.
Nick and Adalind were fully aware that Catherine would not remember her first Christmas. But they still felt the need to commemorate it.
Kitty was their first child of whom they were able to enjoy all of the first with, without having to worry about some threat. So they wanted to make every moment special.
Of course, they wanted everything to feel special for every member of their family, and they celebrated with that in mind.
One thing they did was to make homemade Christmas ornaments.
They found a recipe for homemade playdough and made some in various Holiday colors.
Using cookie cutters to create the shapes desired, two pieces were cut out for one ornament, with a hole in the the piece that would be facing away from the tree, then a printed picture was placed between the pieces that were then sealed and left to dry out.
The parent's intended for the children to make the ornament with their picture, as an extra special keepsake, but the kids all insisted that their parents also make ornaments to have their faces in, turning their Christmas tree into a family portrait of sorts.
Nick cut out two circles, pressed Kitty's hand into one and her foot into the other, creating imprints and wrote, "Catherine Marie's First Christmas." on the back of each.
Adalind teared up at the gesture, pulling Nick to her and kissing him deeply.
Diana and Kelly made exaggerated gagging noises.
