Kaito allowed himself a groan of exaggerated misery as he let himself fall face-down on Shinichi's bed.
The detective paused in brushing his teeth, looking into his room to investigate. Seeing his soulmate brought a smile to his face, despite the mage's not-so-great mood.
He hurried to finish in the bathroom and came to stand behind Kaito, arms crossed.
"Welcome back."
Kaito whined and forced himself to turn on his back, spreading arms and legs and making grabby hands at Shinichi. "Come cuddle!"
Rolling his eyes with humor, Shinichi followed the request, squeaking when Kaito had him in his octopus grip and snuggled him tightly, turning so they'd lay side by side.
"So demanding." He commented dryly, though ran a fond hand through his soulmate's wild hair while he nosed his neck, kissing his mating mark and rubbing his cheek on his neck and shoulder.
Shinichi knew by now that this was Kaito's standard procedure when he came back from a visit to Elemoria.
To scent him, to mix their scents, to make sure everyone still knew Shinichi was his.
So the detective endured it with a smile and let him finish before he'd start investigating his mood. Only when Kaito sighed in satisfaction and settled against him with an actual purr did Shinichi speak up.
"How was your weekend?" He asked, chuckling when Kaito whined and grumbled.
"A disaster." He had spent the weekend in Elemoria, to visit his parents and take care of a few things, learning bit by bit how things worked as the White Lord for when he had to take over eventually.
"Those people, I can't believe them. So many requests, and each of them so... so stupid!"
Shinichi let him rant, knowing it would make the alpha feel better if he let it all out. It wasn't his first visit there, after all.
He had insisted Shinichi joined him, but after one weekend there where he totally ignored his duties it was decided by everyone – Shinichi included – that the detective would stay home during that time.
There was the plan that Shinichi would join this time, to visit his in-laws, but he hadn't been feeling well the day Kaito left, so he'd passed this time.
The memory of the past two days were filling him with both excitement and dread, a lump lodged in his throat as he watched Kaito get up and pace in front of the bed as he ranted about the people he was supposed to rule.
After a few minutes the mage took a deep breath and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Whatever. When I'm the boss I'll change a few things, that's for sure." He stated with a nod to himself, before looking at his soulmate and caressing his calf.
"Anyways, how was your weekend? Are you feeling better?"
Shinichi averted his gaze and forced himself to swallow the lump. He was aware how much that reaction worried Kaito, so he scooted up to sit against the headboard and gestured for him to join him.
He willingly spread his legs for the alpha to settle between them, the strong arms wrapped around his waist as his worried indigo eyes caught his.
"What's wrong?" The grip tightened minimally when Shinichi hesitated. "Shinichi?"
"I'm fine." At Kaito's stare, he chuckled. "Really."
"Is it another side effect of the poison?" The anxiousness was adorable, Shinichi decided.
"No, nothing like that." He swallowed again, smiling at his soulmate. "I... I have something for you."
Kaito frowned, the worry not easing with how confusing his mate was being.
"Uhm. Okay? But christmas is still a month away." He tried a grin. "You're worried I'll find my present early again, right?"
The omega laughed, running a hand through his hair. "It's not exactly a christmas present, but since I haven't got you anything yet we can call it that if you want."
Somewhat calmed, Kaito kissed his love's nose with a grin. "What is it?"
Shinichi seemed to steel himself before he reached under his pillow to pull out a poorly wrapped gift.
"Ran... uhm. Ran helped me a little. But I bought and wrapped it myself."
Kaito sat up on his knees and giddily received the present. "Clearly, I recognize your wrapping skills." He grinned blindingly bright as he carefully knead the package.
It was soft, perhaps a shirt or something? Clearly not a book. He put it to his ear and shook, nothing but crinkling paper.
Shinichi rolled his eyes, a blush on his face. "Just open it."
Noting the blush, Kaito's face grew smug as he eyed him, hands slowly working on opening the wrap.
"Heh, could it be it's something to put on your delicious body for me? You do know I love you in nothing but..."
Kaito trailed off when light blue, very soft fabric came to light. Clearly not lingerie. He raised a brow and unfolded it, revealing a onesie. He turned it around to look at the front, where a sleepy teddy bear was cuddling a pillow on one side, while on the other was a name neatly sewed.
"Koichi...?" He read, voice hoarse.
He looked at Shinichi for confirmation, eyes wide and rapidly filling with happy tears. When his mate smiled shyly and nodded, the floodgates opened.
He latched onto the omega, kissing him over and over while those happy tears streamed down his cheeks. Shinichi laughed and wiped them away, squirming when Kaito moved the kisses to his neck, kissing his way down to his stomach.
There, he lifted Shinichi's night shirt, smiling lovingly at the still flat expanse of skin. He pressed his lips to it softly before carefully laying his head on it, hugging his mate's hips.
"I... I wanted to give you a sonogram, but there's not much to see yet." Shinichi said after a few moments. "So I asked Ran for help, and Sera came up with the idea."
"It's perfect. You're perfect. My gorgeous omega love." He reluctantly moved his head to look at him. "Though I am a little annoyed that they knew before I did." His grin betrayed him, though.
"I was a little freaked out, and she's sorta my big sister." He shrugged, smiling. "She sewed the name on, by the way."
Kaito lovingly placed the onesie on Shinichi's bare stomach before scooting up to wrap an arm around his shoulders and kissing him.
"Perfect. Just... perfect." He mumbled, unable to stop grinning. "And now smile for me."
Shinichi raised a brow when Kaito grinned at the ceiling, following the gaze in time to see the mage take a picture with his phone camera.
"You're horrible." The detective face-palmed, one eye watching the photo.
The onesie on his stomach was clearly visible, Kaito was grinning like the sun with his eyes still a little wet, while Shinichi himself was a little flushed and had a confused expression on his face. Though his mouth had been twitching to form a smile, the relief that his mate took the news so well overwhelming.
"You don't plan on posting that anywhere, do you? I don't want everyone and their mother to know."
"Nah. But our mothers should know." He sent the picture to Yukiko and also to Aoko. Shinichi could see small magic sparks as Kaito used two fingers to push a copy of the picture to hover holographic in front of them, before he twisted his hand, transforming the picture to a dove-shaped light that vanished through the roof.
"And since your best friend knows, mine should too. She's gonna be his godmother, just so you know."
Shinichi chuckled. "That's fine. Ran already said she wants to be Sayuri's godmother. Since she reminds her so much of Conan."
Kaito laughed freely and vanished his phone so he could wrap both arms around his soulmate in a snuggle. "This is really happening... I... I'm so happy. I love you."
Ignoring the frantic vibrating coming from both his and Kaito's phones, Shinichi settled into his mate's embrace, smiling when a hand lovingly caressed his stomach.
It was an adventure, yes, and while it scared him, he knew it would be fine as Kaito was forever with him.
"I love you too."
