Star-Crossed was super fun to write but if you think that I was gonna leave Isabela without a love interest while Luisa got to find her person you're dead wrong lol. I found out the name of the background character I mentioned by looking at the credits and going through Jared Bush's twitter.
A quick note to say that I am not a person of color and the queer interpretation of the film is not anywhere as important as what the movie really is, the story of generational trauma in a Latin American family. So we should be sure to uplift those voices as well in between reading more lighthearted/less knowledgeable fics like this one.
Mirabel had barely stepped outside of Casita when she was nearly trampled by a lady on a donkey.
"Special delivery." The woman announced, backing away from Mirabel a little before sliding off the donkey. She was wearing a white and grey striped shirt and a light blue skirt with a dark blue flowery pattern at the hem. Her chin-length brown hair was wavy and tucked behind her ears.
"Who are you?" Mirabel blurted without meaning to sound so rude. Fortunately, the delivery lady did not take it unkindly.
"Sofía Ortiz. I'm taking over for my Tío Osvaldo." Now Mirabel could see the similarity between the woman standing before her and the normal delivery man.
"Right, hello, nice to meet you? I'm Mirabel."
"I've got a delivery for an Isabela Madrigal, do you know her?"
"That's my sister. I can take it to her," Mirabel offered. The no-nonsense delivery woman was a bit threatening, in a cool way, and Mirabel did not want to get on Sofía's bad side.
"I was given special instructions to make sure Isabela received this one personally."
Mirabel inwardly groaned. Now that Isabela was no longer tied up with Mariano, a lot of men had sent her unwanted love letters. This was likely the same.
"It's a waste of paper," Mirabel mumbled under her breath before nodding at Sofía, "I'll go get her."
Once she was inside Casita she hollered up the stairs, "ISABELA, ANOTHER LOVE LETTER FOR YOU!"
Isabela, descending via vine, let out a long and dramatic sigh.
"Why don't you tell Osvaldo he doesn't even need to deliver those? I'm not interested in any of those men!"
"Oh, it's not actually Osvaldo," Mirabel started, before Isabela walked out the door and stopped in her tracks.
Dozens of flowers bloomed completely by accident as Isabela took in the sight of Sofía and Mirabel took in the sight of her sister in a stupor.
Sofía glanced at the flowers before studying the source of them
"Tío told me you Madrigals were special, if not a little strange."
Isabela took control of her emotions and waved the flowers away, crossing over and offering Sofía her hand. Sofía briefly shook her hand and a few more flowers popped up around them.
"I'm Isabela."
"I'm Sofía, and this is for you."
Isabela reluctantly took the letter, wondering how she could prolong the interaction.
"I really appreciate it, I mean, I appreciate you coming all the way out here to deliver this letter for me."
"It's my job," Sofía pointed out, smiling a little, though, at the way the pretty gardener was tripping over her words.
"Right, but I still appreciate it. Do you want anything? Something to drink, maybe? Water for your donkey?"
"I appreciate it, but I do have other deliveries to get to. Maybe some other time. I'm glad I could get you your love letter, though."
"Oh, it's not a love letter! I mean, I don't love whoever sent it to me. Not like that. I'm unattached." Isabela smoothed her dress and let out a nervous laugh.
Sofía couldn't help but laugh at how flustered Isabela was getting, as more and more flowers bloomed around them. She plucked a purple flower and tucked it behind her ear before giving Isabela one more nod and smile.
"See you around, Isabela. I'm sure there will be more special deliveries."
Mirabel stood in the door, inwardly squealing about the whole adorable interaction.
Isabela stood, watching Sofía leave and hugging the letter to her heart like it was precious, before turning around and seeing her youngest sister smirking at her.
"I want not a sound out of you," Isabela hissed. Mirabel soundlessly wiggled her eyebrows at Isabela and Isabela stormed off, leaving the letter behind, impaled on a newly formed cactus. But she couldn't help hoping that more letters would come and that maybe, one day, that the love would come from somebody else.
