Chapter 1
"Kara, are you sure you want to do a piece like this while Lex has just been brought into Metropolis PD and the Feds are leveling charges at him? Seems like that story would be right up your alley," William asked from the seat behind his new desk. The Pulitzer Prize winner had been put in charge of CatCo. while Kate Kane had been granted receivership of Obsidian North and the media conglomerate. He had called Kara into his new office so they could have a private conversation.
"Nia should get this one. We want this piece to be neutral. I blew the whistle on Lex before and everyone knows I don't like him. She could gain some good experience and you could help her name become trusted by our readers," the blonde said from her seat in front of his desk.
"All right well if you're sure. We don't want to seem like we're pandering to the newest possible owner of the company though," William said.
"Hardly, I did the Batwoman piece so doing a piece on Kate Kane will allow me to showcase a female CEO and businesswoman. I can even throw in her comments on her thoughts of vigilantism both here in National City and Gotham," Kara smiled.
"All right, I like that angle. Do what you have to do and I'll see what Nia thinks," he smiled back.
"Great!" The blonde was thrilled that her cover worked. Well, it wasn't entirely a cover; she'd have to come back with an actual article.
"Do you have a few minutes to talk before you go?" William wanted to know.
"What's going on? Everything ok?" Kara grew concerned.
"Oh, I'm fine I just… well I'm…" it was unlike the man in front of her to search for his words. It was times like these that she wished she had J'onn's mind reading abilities.
"You know you can tell me, whatever it is," the blonde told him.
"Be safe on your trip," was finally what William settled on. Kara gave him a slight smile, like she was expecting more, and said,
"Will do." She got up and then headed out of his office while William inwardly cursed himself. He was usually suave and good with the ladies, yet with Kara he just couldn't find his footing, and he had no idea why.
"So, you all good?" Nia asked as Kara approached the brunette's desk.
"I am and so are you. William should be approaching you about covering Lex's capture and new legal troubles," the blonde smiled at her.
"Me?" Nia was a little surprised.
"Sure, you can handle it," Kara was a little surprised at her friend's hesitance.
"But can National City?" The human-Naltorian hybrid had lowered her tone and raised an eyebrow.
"We have two Martians, Brainy, and Lena covering for us. Alex will be back in fighting shape soon too. Kelly has been working on something with Brainy, but no one has clued me in yet on that one. Besides, we won't be gone for long," the blonde pointed out, keeping her tone as well.
"Brainy has been consumed with trying to help Lillian. It isn't going like he'd hoped," Nia admitted.
"How's Lena holding up? I haven't spoken to her today," Kara wondered.
"Talk to her before you head to Gotham," her friend suggested. The blonde nodded, gave Nia a hug, and headed for the exit. She whipped out her phone and texted Kate before dialing Lena's number.
