In a cave deep in the earth, a large female black dragon stared lovingly at a large collection of eggs, kept warm from the volcanic heat in the depths. Smoke curled through the air, and a few cracks could be heard as three of the eggs began to hatch.

"Oh, Nelthariiioonn!", she called. "Come, see your newest children."

In the entryway behind her, an impossibly huge dragon appeared. Metallic plates lined his back and jaws, his rough black scales interspersed with molten cracks. His belly was a raging inferno, a result of his barely contained power. His fiery eyes glared at the cave.

"What is the point in watching some more whelps hatch?", he growled, "There are so many of them as there is, and I have many plans to attend to."

The female dragon replied, "Oh, but Neltharion, these will not just be another set of black drakes. These will be your greatest children ever, it has been destined!"

Neltharion frowned. "How did you learn of this, Sintharia?"

Sintharia replied, "There was a prophet through here recently. Very mysterious, he just appeared here and told me the next of my children to hatch will be the greatest I will ever lay. He was genuine, I could sense it."

Neltharion growled, "I must strengthen the wards around here. No one should be able to just teleport into my lair."

One of the eggs wriggled violently, and a hole was chipped out. The snout of a whelp appeared in it, sniffing around curiously.

"The greatest of your clutch, he said? Will they be greater than me?", asked Neltharion, his paranoia kicking in.

Sintharia scoffed. "No dragon will ever be greater than you. You know this."

Neltharion hmphed, clearly still suspicious of the three eggs before him.

Another one of the eggs cracked in two, revealing a new whelp. It screeched triumphantly and staggered out into the world. Neltharion noticed the ram-like horns curving off of its head. No other member of his clutch had had those.

The other two eggs broke open, revealing two more whelps with the same horn style. Neltharion's frown deepened. One set of unique horns he could dismiss as random chance, but three with the same style, hatching at the same time and with a visit by a stranger stating that these dragons were special? These whelps could indeed be more powerful than the others.

Sintharia smiled at him. "Why don't you name them? They will be your most powerful allies one day, I'm certain of it."

Neltharion sighed. "Fine. But after that, I have pressing matters to attend to. Some random tauren warrior is getting troublesome."

He looked over the three whelps. One was much larger than the other two, and was already attempting to establish its dominance on the others. It was the only male one; the other two were female.

"The boy will be named Nefarian.", Neltharion stated. He glanced over at the larger of the two female whelps, who Nefarian was attempting to intimidate first. This one was a deep purple instead of the typical black. "She will be Onyxia.", the father decided.

But when he tried to find the third one, it was nowhere to be seen. Sintharia seemed startled by that as well, but then was distracted when Nefarian and Onyxia leapt savagely at each other and began biting and clawing and growling like crazy. Neltharion watched, waiting to see which one would prove stronger. Meanwhile, Sintharia started attempting to locate the third one.

After a few seconds of squabbling, the two siblings backed away from each other, panting for breath. Onyxia had a long scratch across her snout. Nefarian had a bite mark on his leg. They growled threateningly at each other, ready to go again.

But with a loud screech, the third whelp reappeared. She tackled Nefarian, knocking him over, then lunged at Onyxia, startling her and knocking her off balance. The third whelp screeched triumphantly, then turned towards Neltharion. But instead of showing any fear at the impossibly large and powerful dragon, she growled and puffed herself up in an attempt to intimidate him.

Neltharion chuckled. "I believe I like this one.", he said, "Her name shall be...Ebonia."
