A distressed cry shattered the idyllic peace of the garden.
"Sisters," anguish and disbelief colored the tenor clarion of the words Farore, the Goddess of Courage, whispered into the sudden quiet. "The Shadow has killed the Hero."
A long moment of silence followed. Even the birds and crickets ceased their chirping.
"Well, that's not supposed to happen." Din, the Goddess of Power, deadpanned in her deep-bell voice.
"There must be a Hero. There cannot not be a Hero," added the tinkling windchime of Nayru, the Goddess of Wisdom.
The garden held its breath for a small eternity.
"The Shadow will have to do it." Farore clearly couldn't believe what had just come from her own mouth.
"What!?" Din boomed.
"What?!" Nayru whip-cracked.
"There must be a Hero. The Shadow has killed the Hero; therefore, the Shadow must now become the Hero." The chimes of her voice strengthened as her resolve solidified.
"Okay…" Nayru hedged.
Din raised her eyebrows. "Who's telling him?"
Author note: Hello! I've had the cover art for this in my screensavers for years; I got it off some free wallpaper site ages ago. One day, it came up on random and I just looked at it and thought, "That would make a great story," so I sat right down and started it. I tried to look for the artist to give credit, but all I get is nowhere. Anyway, I'm a huge Zelda nerd (I have one tattoo currently, and there WILL be more), and I'm completely in love with this concept, so let me know what you think. I love feedback. :)
