DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN HARRY POTTER.
That night, Severus was shaking left and right on the sofa bed that he had been sleeping on ever since Marlene had moved in with him. (She slept in his main bed of course).
Something terrible was going on through his mind.
Severus Snape was at Malfoy Manor. He was a Death Eater and had been one since graduating from Hogwarts. Lily had not forgiven him and James was his enemy.
He went up to Voldemort and bowing to him, he said, "My Lord, I bring news for you; information which concerns your well being."
He was now kneeling in front of Dumbledore crying out, "Hide them, keep them safe; hide them all!"
Dumbledore spoke, "And what will you give me, Severus?"
Severus replied, "Anything!"
He was now a spy for Dumbledore, but Lily and James had died, Sirius was in Azkaban for 'betraying' James and Lily and killing 12 Muggles, and Harry had been sent to live with his aunt and uncle.
He was standing in Dumbledore's office saying, "You said you would keep them safe!"
Dumbledore sadly responded, "Lily and James trusted the wrong person."
Severus found himself standing in the backyard of a house with the address No. 4 Privet Drive. He could see a boy weeding the garden. This boy seemed to be around four, but was quite skinny and was wearing what looked like old shabby clothes. He was also wearing a pair of round glasses which looked like they had been fixed with tape many a time. Suddenly, there was another boy in the garden, looking around the same age as the first boy, but quite fat for his age, with blond hair (or black, according to the movies). This boy was just standing around and doing nothing while the other boy was clearly having a hard time with the weeds.
Suddenly, the fat boy waddled up to where the first boy was squatting and began to trample the flowers in the garden where the weeds were.
The thin boy called out in a loud frightened voice, "No Dudley, those are Aunt Petunia's flowers!" The fat boy, Dudley as he was called, immediately punched the thin boy in the face, breaking his glasses and shouting, "I don't care! Take that you freak!"
Severus wanted to rush over, hit Dudley and hug the poor child and comfort him, but when he rushed over to him and tried to do so, his hand didn't make contact with Dudley but simply seemed to pass right through him. No one seemed to hear his shouting at Dudley or his sympathetic look towards Harry. It seemed as if he didn't exist and he could only watch what was happening as if it were a movie.
Severus looked at the child closely and realized that he looked a lot like James which meant that this must be Harry Potter, but he could not even make himself noticed, because he could only view what was happening.
Suddenly, the back door opened and Severus saw a thin woman with a horse like face, none other than Petunia Dursley coming out. All of a sudden, Dudley started crying out, "The freak hit me. He's trampled all the flowers."
Petunia looked at her trampled flowers and screamed. She grabbed Harry's arms and slapped him across the face shouting, "HOW DARE YOU TRAMPLE OUR FLOWERS! HOW DARE YOU HIT DUDLEY YOU GOOD FOR NOTHING FREAK!"
Harry cried with tears streaming down his face, "Please, I didn't do anything. Dudley trampled the flowers and hit me." He tried to hug his aunt for comfort but she rudely pushed him away and screeched, "HOW DARE YOU HURT DUDDYKINS AND THEN LIE ABOUT IT! YOU'RE A GOOD FOR NOTHING, UNWANTED, FREAK!"
Ignoring Harry's cries, she pulled him into the house and went into the living room where Vernon Dursley was sitting and watching the television. He saw Petunia dragging a crying Harry and asked gruffly, "What has the ungrateful freak done now Pet?" Petunia proceeded to tell Vernon, "He trampled all my flowers and then hit Dudley when he was simply playing about."
Vernon's gruff expression turned into that of contempt and he smiled a hateful smile as he looked at Harry who was whimpering and growled, "So you've been trampling your aunt's flowers and beating Dudders, isn't it you freak?!"
Suddenly, Harry cried out, "Dudley always hits me and I'm called a freak and punished for things that I didn't do. Dudley always gets hugs and kisses but I never get any. I want to be a good boy but you always tell me that I'm a bad boy. Why?"
Petunia in response angrily hit him on the head and yelled, "DON'T ASK QUESTIONS! YOU ARE A BAD BOY AND A FREAK, JUST LIKE YOUR PARENTS! YOU DON'T DESERVE ANYTHING GOOD!" Harry whimpered, "Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, please…" but was cut off by Vernon declaring, "No dinner tonight for you, you ungrateful freak."
Standing up, Vernon grabbed Harry by his neck and pulled him towards a cupboard under a staircase nearby. Opening the door of the cupboard and violently pushing him inside, he held him by the neck with his meaty hand and cruelly hissed, "Remember this. You are a freak just like your parents. They didn't want you and they left you when they died in that car crash. You are a freak just like them, and no one will ever love you!" With a final blow to Harry's head and a kick, Vernon locked the door laughing maniacally.
Petunia was rushing Dudley into the house. Dudley now looked a little older, around ten or eleven, was fatter than before and was wrapped up in a blanket. Somehow, he seemed to have gotten drenched and was looking quite frightened. As Petunia pulled her son along with her, saying words of comfort, Harry entered the house, followed by his Uncle Vernon.
As soon as the front door was closed, Uncle Vernon grabbed Harry by his hair and angrily demanded, "What happened?!"
Harry began pleading desperately, "I don't know, I swear." Vernon growled as he continued, "One minute the glass was there and then it was gone. It was like magic."
Upon hearing that, Uncle Vernon opened the door of Harry's cupboard and rudely pushed him inside. He locked the door, bent down to Harry's level, and hissed, "There is no such thing such as magic!"
Severus found himself looking at an older version of Harry in what seemed to be a potions supplies room. He was teaching Harry Legilimency, but Harry was faring quite poorly.
Severus found himself saying coldly, "You're just like your father, lazy and arrogant."
Harry retorted, "Don't say a word against my father!"
Severus continued, "Weak," to which Harry replied, "I'm not weak."
Severus replied, "Then prove it. Control your emotions, discipline your mind."
He then pointed his wand at Harry and said, "Legilimens," and once again, Harry failed to control himself and Snape was able to break into his mind quite easily.
After a flurry of memories, Severus slowly remarked, "Very vulnerable."
Harry suddenly cried out, "Stop it," and broke out into gasps.
Severus icily asked, "Is this what you call control?!"
Harry paced around nearly shouting, "We've been at it for hours. If I could just rest…" Severus instantly strode up to him and strongly declared, "The Dark Lord isn't resting."
Severus commented, "You and Black, two of a kind, sentimental children, forever whining about how bitterly unfair your lives have been. Well, it may have escaped your notice but life isn't fair. Your blessed father knew that, in fact he frequently thought…"
Harry suddenly spoke, "My father was a great man!"
Severus grabbed his shirt and pushed him aside towards a chair declaring angrily, "Your father was a swine!"
It was nighttime and Severus was standing in the Great Hall of Hogwarts as the headmaster. He had killed Dumbledore and Voldemort was now in control of the ministry. Harry Potter had a bounty on his head and had been sighted in Hogsmeade.
He had been addressing the assembled students in the Hall when Harry, now 17 had burst out from the crowd, earning gasps from all the students. A team of Order members, led by Kingsley Shacklebolt had entered the Hall now and Harry was yelling at him.
He yelled, "How dare you stand where he stood! Tell everyone what happened that night! Tell everyone about how you looked him, a man who trusted you, and killed him!"
Snape pulled out his wand and started towards Harry, but suddenly, an enraged Minerva McGonagall came and stood between Harry and Snape. She began to fire spell after spell at him. Severus merely defended himself, inconspicuously deflecting Minerva's spells towards Amycus Carrow and Alecto Carrow behind him. He proceeded to break out of a window and escape, flying away like any other Death Eater, while Minerva screamed, "Coward!"
Severus now saw a much older Harry accompanied by a red haired woman and a group of children on platform 9 ¾. One of the children looked almost like Harry but did not have glasses.
Suddenly, he stopped where he was and kneeled down. Harry kneeled down to his level to ask what was wrong. The boy asked him, "Dad, what if I am put in Slytherin?"
Harry looked at him and said, "Albus Severus Potter, you were named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin, and he was, the bravest man I've ever known."
Albus said, "Let's just say that I am."
Harry responded, "Then Slytherin House will have gained a wonderful, young wizard. But, listen, if it really means that much to you, you can choose Gryffindor. The Sorting hat takes your choice into account."
"Really?" Albus asked. Harry replied, "Really."
They heard the guard's whistle and Harry asked, "Ready?" Albus said, "Ready."
They then stood up and Harry pulled his son into a hug.
And then, Severus Snape shot up in his bed, wide awake, eyes wide open.
He couldn't believe what he had just dreamt of. He had joined Voldemort, had been the one to tell him about the prophecy, and Lily and James died. He couldn't believe how vindictive he had been in his dream regarding Harry. He felt heartbroken when it came to the part where the Dursleys had mistreated Harry.
Little did he know that in fact, it had all happened that way. This, the current moment, was actually his second chance, but he did not know that. He did not remember having done any of it and then being granted a second chance. Instead, this for him as far as he understood it, was a nightmare of an alternate reality.
And yet, at the end of the dream, Harry had forgiven him. He had seen good in him. How was it possible to have that kind of forgiveness and strength?! He wouldn't have named his son after him otherwise.
And then, Severus' fear sprang up in his mind. Even though he had renounced the dark lord, would that be enough to save James and Lily? What would happen to Harry?
Severus turned to his right side and switched on a lamp on a small table next to the sofa bed. He paused to look at a picture in a cute little photo frame just in front of the lamp. He picked it up and looked at it. It was a cute photo of Severus, fast asleep on a couch in the living room of the Potter's cottage. Harry was sleeping on top of him.
Severus had just come over after a difficult auror mission. He had wanted to see baby Harry to take some stress off his mind, but had fallen asleep on the couch. He had woken up some time later to find a sleeping Harry on his chest, and James standing above with a camera in his hands.
As he looked at the photo, he choked back a sob and softly said, "Harry, I won't let anything happen to you. I won't let you suffer a horrible childhood as you did in my dream. I will always love you, my Baby Godson. I promise!"
