Well, here it is the final chapter! Hopefully it lives up to your expectations and doesn't disappoint you too much, I've been told in the past my final chapters have ruined stories.
Chapter Twelve
Changing the Status Quo
You may recall when Harry Potter recently made history by successfully passing Decree 271928, Actum ad Populum -or more commonly known as the Witches Rights Bill – through the Wizengamot by a landslide 13-to-2 vote in its favour. We are now starting to see some changes within the infamous governing council that has the potential to change our society forever.
Four sitting members of the Wizengamot have made their intentions known that they intend to name a witch as their successors; Charlotte Abbott is set to take over from William. Susan Bones is set to take over from her aunt, Madam Amelia Bones, who has remarked that she intends to put more focus on DMLE reforms. Calla L. Belby is set to act as Damocles Belby's proxy within the Wizengamot for the next five years before officially taking over the seat.
Finally, Rowan Greengrass has officially changed the way the Greengrass seat is managed by switching roles with his eldest daughter, Daphne, making her the head of the family seat while he takes a more backstage position as a researcher and advisor -not only for his daughter, but for any member of the Wizengamot that requires it, most notably Harry Potter, who asked the Senior Greengrass to co-author the Witches Rights Bill.
With these changes, it brings the number of witches on the Wizengamot from three to six. It may not seem like a lot, but take into consideration that the last witch to join the Wizengamot was in 1991, having four witches named to join the magical body in quick succession is truly something worth celebrating.
With this change in seating balances, not to mention the imminent arrival of the reformed Draco Malfoy, who has promised he will push for change once he takes up his family seat, we here at The Daily Prophet are excited to see what's to come from this younger, fairer Wizengamot.
Once Daphne was officially a sworn in member of the Wizengamot, she and Harry quickly got to work on changing the country to try and make it fairer for everyone. Armed with the knowledge and skills Daphne had equipped him with, Harry was able to pass the three decrees he'd proposed when he first joined the Wizengamot. He'd even managed to improve upon some of his original proposals by partnering with the most unlikely of allies, namely one Enola Zabini who had taken a keen interest in his compulsory muggle studies class at Hogwarts proposal, suggesting it was more likely to pass if it were to be paired with a compulsory ancient studies class for the muggle-born and raised students.
"It's all well and good trying to educate the future generations, but it shouldn't come at the expense of half our society losing their history and their heritage," Enola told him one afternoon as they began discussing his proposal. "You've seen for yourself some of the negative aspects of Pureblood society, but we do have some positives as well," she remarked before staring off into the distance, lost in memories. "When I was little, I remember my mother used to take us to the dance around the May pole for Beltane. My father would join us, once he'd concluded his business and he'd always bring wildflowers for mother. I think I still have a crown of flowers he once made for me when I was a little girl," she told him with a soft smile, her eyes closing briefly at the warm memory. "When Blaise was little, his father passed away quite close to Samhain, so we conducted a Feast for the Dead, setting a place for his father as well as for my own parents and grandparents. Then we'd go to a bonfire for cleansing. I think it brought Blaise some comfort when he was younger. It would be a shame if the traditions of our ancestors were forgotten. They should be treasured and shared with every member of society, regardless of their background or upbringing," she told him and Harry couldn't help but agree. He himself was just starting to get an education on the more traditional festivals and celebrations as his relationship with Daphne grew. His partnering with Enola proved highly successful as the Encompassing Education Decree was passed in a landslide vote, even the staunchest blood purest was not able to argue against it.
And it appeared it was just the beginning. Never in the history of the Wizengamot had they passed so many decrees that would progress their society, working for the good of many rather than for the good of the few. That wasn't to say that there weren't still instances of decrees or amendments being passed that didn't benefit a select few over everyone else, but they were few and far between now, with a new bloc of witches and wizards working together to ensure that if those decrees were going to pass, that there would be certain stipulations attached to ensure no one took advantage of their position.
To make this even easier to achieve, The Daily Prophet had started sending reporters to every Wizengamot hearing held, taking care to send the same reporter to every hearing pertaining to a proposed decree, ensuring that all the details were reported on to the public, allowing the Wizengamot to be held accountable in a way that they'd never been before, something that Harry firmly believed was greatly needed.
Though some people still had a little difficulty trusting the newspaper, wounds from articles published in the past taking a long time to heal.
"Why you insist on reading that rag, I'll never understand," Daphne said from her spot in the doorway to Harry's office, her mauve Wizengamot robes folded over her arm.
"It's good to know how things are being reported, the court of public opinion being what it is," Harry remarked, folding the paper and throwing it on his desk, before looking up at his beautiful girlfriend.
When Daphne returned from her time away from the Wizengamot and society, she confided in him that she'd broken off her betrothment with Cassius, a difficult and sometimes painful process to go through. It wasn't until Harry asked her on a date weeks later that Daphne admitted that part of the reason she broke it off, was because she'd realised that over the months where she'd helped him find his feet in the Wizengamot, she's started to fall for him. As her mother once said to her and her sister when they were teens, if you fall in love with two people at the same time, choose the second. Because if you truly loved the first, you wouldn't have fallen for the second. Of course, it always helped the decision-making process if the first person turned out to be a complete and utter tosser. After all, who could really compete against Harry Potter and win?
"It makes a change from the reports on who looks the best in the official robes I suppose," Daphne agreed, throwing said robes onto Harry's sofa before walking around to stand behind his desk, wrapping her arms around him from behind, placing a kiss upon his temple in greeting.
"Please, you know no one looks as good as you in those robes," he told her, turning his head so they could kiss properly.
"Flatterer," she told him with a grin.
"Always. How did the hearing go? Any problems?"
"None whatsoever. Even Fudge was on his best behaviour," she told him as she moved to sit on his desk beside him. "So, what are our plans tonight? Are we going to dinner with mother and father?"
"Actually, I thought we'd go out, just the two of us. We never did get to celebrate your swearing in after all," he suggested, recalling how they'd hit the ground running when Daphne officially joined him on the Wizengamot.
"Hmm, I have a different plan for your consideration," she told him with a flirty smile, running her fingers through his messy hair in a way she knew he enjoyed. "I think, we should grab some Italian take-away from the bistro down the road from your place, along with a bottle of wine and celebrate, just the two of us," she suggested with a wink, biting her bottom lip lightly as they both moved in close to each other.
"Why Miss Greengrass, are you propositioning me?" Harry asked with a grin as their lips ghosted over each other in a barely there kiss.
"Mmm, is it working?" she asked with a smile and a soft sigh, as Harry moved to kiss along her jaw towards her ear, lightly nibbling her as his whispered "Absolutely," before she pulled his lips back to her own in a bruising kiss, the two quickly getting lost in one another as they celebrated their relationship and their success.
After all, this was only the beginning.
So, that concludes Society Fair. I hope you've enjoyed the story, it's been fun (and frustrating at times) to write this and I've enjoyed reading all your reviews. It's been so heartwarming seeing the positive reception this story has had, especially considering I've not written/posted anything in so many years, so thank you.
I don't know at the moment if I'll expand on Harry and Daphne's life in the Wizengamot, but if you've enjoyed my characters in this tale I would recommend reading my Summer Exchange story that also features them. I hadn't actually realised until I went back over that story, that this could be considered a companion piece to that tale/universe.
Anyway, until next time.
