Safe Haven, Part Five

Hiccup and Astrid along with their dragons left the Scuttleclaw's cave to see what they were dealing with. From what Hiccup could tell, the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare must have followed his and Toothless' scents, which allowed it to find them so quickly. It wouldn't be long until they would be found, and Hiccup wanted to drive the dragon away as far away from the Scuttleclaw family as he could.

Such a feat would take some time and effort, and Hiccup knew that it would not be easy to make this dragon leave. Why, they drove it off twice and yet it still came for the baby Scuttleclaws! Hiccup and Astrid needed to come up with a plan—some sort of scheme—that would drive the dragon off the island. Perhaps even further.

Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless, and Stormfly eventually came to the same clearing where they met up again after a short period of being separated. Astrid and Hiccup pushed themselves up against two trees that were close to each other, and Toothless and Stormfly ducked behind the bushes, hiding themselves completely. The four were barely visible, and they blended in perfectly thanks to the hiding and stealth training that they had done several times before back when they were first starting out as Dragon Riders.

Astrid peeked out from her tree and her eyes narrowed at the sight of the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare, who was currently sniffing the ground for any sign of the baby Scuttleclaws. The Hofferson drew her head back and gripped her axe.

"How are we going to drive it away?" asked Astrid in a whisper so that she wouldn't risk alerting the Titan Wing to their presence.

"We'll need to distract it," replied Hiccup. "If we agitate it enough, it should leave. Then we can focus on helping the Scuttleclaws."

Astrid nodded. "Okay, Dragon Boy. Let's do this." She picked up a medium sized rock from the ground and bounced in her palm, glancing at the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare, ready to take aim. The blonde then threw the rock with all her might toward the left side of the dragon and into the bushes, causing them to rustle. The large dragon perked up and immediately ran toward the direction of the noise, tearing and clawing at the bushes only to find nothing.

"Nice one, Astrid," complemented Hiccup. Astrid smiled proudly. "Now, let's continue to confuse this guy."

Hiccup, Astrid, and their dragons crept to the other side of the clearing, keeping themselves hidden from the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare. Hiccup ducked behind a bush and turned to Astrid, flashing her an impish smile that she didn't know what was for. The Haddock then cupped a hand to his mouth and performed a Thunderdrum call. This confused the Titan Wing dragon. Thunderdrums didn't live anywhere near there.

Astrid snickered and she tossed another rock, and the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare went over to check it out, only to find nothing once again. Hiccup cracked a twig, and the Nightmare headed toward the direction of that noise only to find nothing as well. Hiccup and Astrid hid in bushes, behind trees and rocks to avoid getting caught by the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare, and they continued to make different types of noises of all kinds. Hiccup couldn't think of any other plan that he had come up with that was as fun and amusing as the one he and Astrid were currently doing. They had to be creative. They had to find something new to use to make a new sound or simply just use their mouths. Toothless and Stormfly took pleasure in Hiccup's plan to confuse that Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare, and the two would randomly growl or croon, rustle some bushes, or scratch at trees, all to make the smallest of sounds that confounded the Titan Wing Nightmare.

Hiccup tossed a couple of pebbles to the side. Astrid used a sharp stone to grind against her axe, making a sharp shrrringing noise. Toothless scratched his claws against the trunk of a tree, and Stormfly stomped her feet. The Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare looked around in pure and utter confusion. It wasn't even making any moves to investigate the random, uncalled for sounds. Terrible Terror calls, Deathsong calls, twigs snapping, rocks falling, regular Monstrous Nightmare call…it was too much! Too confusing! The Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare screeched in agitation.

"It's working!" Hiccup whispered happily.

Astrid nodded cheerfully. "Now all we need to do is lure it off this island."

But then, in a terrible instant, the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare whipped its head around and spotted Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless, and Stormfly hiding in the bushes.

All was still for a moment.

The dragon charged.

Not wasting a minute, Hiccup and Astrid mounted their dragons and immediately shot into the air, flying over the island with the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare following them. The large dragon shrieked and roared, but Hiccup and Astrid stayed brave and continued to fly, dodging the Nightmare's blasts and shots all while trying to formulate a new plan to permanently drive it away from the Scuttleclaws' home.

"I don't think it's going to give up anytime soon, Hiccup!" exclaimed Astrid as she and Stormfly barrel rolled out of the way of a fiery blast from the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare.

Hiccup nodded. "Me too. I think we're going to have to use a little force to get this dragon to leave."

The young chief didn't want to resort to forcing the Titan Wing away, but it had to be done. If Hiccup and Astrid didn't drive the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare away from the baby Scuttleclaws and their mother, they both knew that the little Scuttleclaw family wouldn't last long, especially since their mother was wounded.

"Stormfly, spineshot!" Astrid yelled. Her Deadly Nadder squawked determinedly and brought out her spiked tail, blasting several spines toward the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare. The Nightmare dodged easily and threw flames in their direction. Hiccup and Astrid evaded the fire swiftly, and Hiccup told Toothless to shoot multiple plasma blasts toward the large Nightmare. The force from all three plasma blasts caused the dragon to stagger.

"It's working!" Astrid said. The Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare seemed to be beginning to back off. Hiccup and Astrid's small victory was short lived, however, when the Titan Wing turned around and launched an attack on Hiccup, scratching his side with its long, horribly sharp claws. Pain hotter than a searing fire burst from Hiccup's side, and the young chief couldn't help but let out a cry of pain.

"Hiccup!" exclaimed Astrid. She flew to his side and hissed at the sight of the wound, and Hiccup was beginning to have trouble keeping Toothless airborne. If he stayed, he risked falling into the ocean below with Toothless, and the Titan Wing wouldn't hesitate to injure him further. "We need to get you to land!"

Hiccup shook his head weakly. "No…no…" he grunted. "We need to get this thing away from here—"

At that moment, the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare used Hiccup's weak state as an advantage. It lunged toward Hiccup, ready to finish him off. Astrid barely had any time to react, and before she could tell Stormfly to fire, all of a sudden, the baby Scuttleclaws appeared and began to fire at the Titan Wing! Astrid was shocked, but she quickly shook out of her daze to assist the baby dragons.

"Hiccup, concentrate your fire on the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare," said Astrid quickly. She told Stormfly to do just that, and Hiccup did as well. The baby Scuttleclaws followed their example, and six colorful fires were being shot at the Titan Wing Nightmare. Realizing that it wouldn't win the battle and that the babies' home was being protected, the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare let out one last shriek and flew off into the clouds, away from the island and away from the Scuttleclaws' home at last.

"Yes!" cheered Astrid. "It's gone!"

The baby Scuttleclaws chirped and squawked joyfully, glad that their home and mother was no longer under the threat of the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare. Hiccup managed to crack a small smile, but it quickly faded when his scratch wound stabbed with pain. Astrid turned to the auburn-haired chief, concern knotting her features. Hiccup looked like he was about to collapse.

"Let's head back to the island," said Astrid. "You need to be tended to."

Hiccup immediately nodded in agreement, and he clutched his side in an attempt to stop the flow of blood as he and Astrid sped to the Scuttleclaws' island as fast as they could go.
