Safe Haven, Part Six

Hiccup, Astrid, Toothless, Stormfly, and the baby Scuttleclaws soon arrived at the island. Once they all landed, Astrid helped Hiccup off of Toothless, and the young chief did his best to suppress noises of pain. A whimper, a groan, a moan, anything that made him look vulnerable in front of Astrid. However, the Hofferson didn't care if Hiccup made any sounds due to the large, bleeding gash on his side. Astrid knew that Hiccup was hurt, and she hated it when he got injured. He wasn't able to do what he wanted, and whenever Hiccup was in pain, Astrid felt her heart split in two.

This time, however, Astrid did her best to ignore those feelings and focused on leaning Hiccup as comfortably as she could against a large rock. The Haddock cried out when his wound was jostled, and Astrid chewed her lower lip.

"Sorry, sorry," she whispered, trying to soothe Hiccup. "I need to look at your injury."

"G-go right ahead," Hiccup said feebly. And Astrid did just that. She removed Hiccup's leather armor as gently as she could, but she still elicited a whimper or cry from Hiccup. She apologized over and over, even though she knew saying sorry wouldn't do anything at the moment.

After removing Hiccup's armor, Astrid got a closer look at his scratch wound. It was somewhat deep, but not deep enough to damage one of his internal organs. Still, Astrid couldn't help but wince at the sight of it. Blood continuously seeped out, and she knew that if the wound was left open any longer, it would eventually get infected. Luckily, Astrid was always prepared with a roll of gauze in her saddlebag, so she pulled it out along with a small canteen of water, which she used to clean Hiccup's wound. Once that was done, she proceeded to wrap some gauze around his injury. Astrid did that as gingerly as she could. Hiccup was already in a lot of pain; she didn't want to make him feel any worse.

The gauze managed to stop the flow of blood, which relieved both Astrid and Hiccup. The Hofferson let out a small sigh once she finished securing the bandages that were wrapping Hiccup's injury. Hiccup shifted where he was sitting, wincing slightly when a small jolt of pain crawled up his side.

"How do you feel?" asked Astrid.

"I'm feeling okay," answered Hiccup. He turned toward the Scuttleclaws who were currently crowding around Toothless, who seemed somewhat annoyed by the babies' sudden interest in him. One of them got a little too close to Toothless' tail, and the Night Fury had to growl at them to make them move away.

Hiccup cracked a smile. "I still want to help the Scuttleclaws' mother, though. She's still injured, and she needs our help."

Upon hearing about their mother, the three baby Scuttleclaws ran up to Hiccup, nuzzling affectionately in a silent thank you for saving them and their mom. Hiccup laughed softly, and he gave each of the baby dragons a friendly pat on the head.

"You need to rest, Hiccup," said Astrid. As much as she wanted to help the baby dragon's mother, Hiccup was hurt, and the Hofferson girl didn't want him to further irritate his wound.

Hiccup shook his head adamantly. "I'm fine Astrid. The Scuttleclaws' cave isn't that far away anyway. We have to help their mother. She needs to get better as fast as she can so she can defend her home and her babies." His forest green gaze fell on the three baby Scuttleclaws. "These little guys are too vulnerable without her. They might need to leave if that dragon comes back for them again."

Astrid took it all in. She knew that Hiccup was right, and she wanted to help the babies' mother too. Deciding that it would be futile to argue, Astrid sighed in defeat.

"Okay," she said after a few moments of silence. "But if you're in pain, you need to say something."

Hiccup smiled and Astrid helped him up, once he reassured her that he was ready to walk, Astrid, Hiccup, their dragons, and the baby Scuttleclaws walked into the forest toward the baby dragon's cave. It didn't take them as long to find it as it did before since they had the adolescent Scuttleclaws with them. Once they arrived at the cave, Hiccup and Astrid peeked inside, spotting the babies' mother in the back. She attempted to stand, but she immediately fell back down with a grunt of frustration.

Hiccup and Astrid began to enter the cave, but the mother Scuttleclaw growled at them just like she had when they first met. She still didn't trust them, which meant that helping her would be a lot more difficult if she wouldn't even let them within a few feet of her.

Thankfully, though, the baby Scuttleclaws intervened just in time, chirping and warbling things to their mother that seemed to make her let down her guard. Hiccup guessed that the baby Scuttleclaws had told their mother what he, Astrid, and their dragons had done for them. Driving away the Titan Wing Monstrous Nightmare, and even attempting to find them a new home even though they didn't know that their mother was on the island. The mother Scuttlelcaw turned to Hiccup and Astrid, this time, letting them in without growling. But she still watched them warily as they approached her leg.

"It's okay, it's okay," soothed Hiccup. "We're here to help. We're not gonna hurt you."

Before entering the cave, Astrid managed to grab some sticks and vines to make a splint for the Scuttleclaws' mother. She constructed it around her leg while Hiccup took on the job of keeping the mother Scuttleclaw calm. She allowed Astrid to put the splint on her leg, and once the Hofferson was done, she flexed it, noticing that it was no longer in as much pain as it was before. She crooned happily, and her babies ran up to her, nuzzling her, and she returned each nuzzle kindly.

Hiccup smiled. "She'll be better in no time."

Astrid grinned at the touching scene playing out in front of her, and she turned around just in time to see Hiccup getting ready to mount Toothless, which made her blink in surprise.

"Uh, what are you doing?" she asked.

"We need to get back to Berk, don't we?" Hiccup said.

"Yeah, but you need to rest first," stated Astrid.

"I'm fine, Astrid," Hiccup said stubbornly.

"No, you're not," said Astrid. She crossed her arms. "You can't go flying in your condition at the moment. Let alone even walk on your own. First, you need to rest. Then we can leave."

Hiccup sighed and he gave in. Arguing with Astrid Hofferson was not something he wanted to do, and he knew that he would end up losing the argument in the end anyway. Hiccup decided to comply. He did feel a little tired, so he sat down and Toothless curled around him protectively. Stormfly sat down nearby, and Astrid took her place next to Hiccup's side, telling him to get some rest.

"We don't have to worry about the Titan Wing anymore," she said. "This place is safe now."

Hiccup nodded, and he allowed his bright green eyes to slip closed. Astrid smiled softly and she pressed a kiss on Hiccup's forehead. Their little outing hadn't gone entirely to plan, but she was glad that she got to spend some time with him anyway.
