Kara stood frozen as she stared at the closed door of Andrea's office. So many questions were whirling around in her mind. That sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach was back with a vengeance and she felt uncharacteristically dizzy and unmoored. There had to be some mistake, because it sounded like Andrea was implying that Lena had feelings for her. Feelings beyond their shared friendship. It was more than Kara had ever thought possible. She tried to reason it out, surely Andrea was projecting her own insecurities. If Lena had felt that way she would have said something, done something, but all of it was a moot point now wasn't it, because the operative word here is had, as in past tense. She's with Andrea now, she moved on, and the tragic reality is if she had known, things would've been so much different.
Things, however, are what they are. Despite now knowing that her best friend once harbored feelings for her, it's something she's now going to have to come to terms with, because, well, she has Diana, who at this moment is waiting patiently outside for her and is completely unaware of how Kara's entire perspective of the world has just been changed with this life altering information.
She blinked back tears she suddenly realized were about to fall and rubbed her hand over her face to try and recollect herself. Her heart hammering in her chest as she reigns in the vestiges of her composure. She grabbed her bag and fled the building. Diana was standing there at the corner, a worried look written on her face. "I take it the conversation didn't go as well as you hoped?" Diana surmises.
Kara takes a shuddering breath and shakes her head and suddenly feels even more confused. "I'm sorry, dear." Diana pulls her into a hug and Kara lets her, giving into the strength of it and does her best to try and let it balm the warring emotions plaguing her insides. She wraps her own arms around Diana, burying her face in her neck and breathing in the smell of Diana's perfume. It wasn't something she knew how to share with Diana, how would she even begin to explain? Kara pulls back and musters a weak smile. "Let's go eat."
Ruby storms through the front door muttering to herself, her face flushed a deep crimson red. Sam arches an eyebrow at Alex who shrugs just as clueless and turns to the flustered teen. "What has you in a fuss?"
"Oh nothing really," Ruby feigns nonchalance but the aggravation in her voice speaks otherwise. She marches through the living room in a huff and stands in front of the two of them who are sitting side by side. Alex's arm, which was settled comfortably around Sam's shoulder, moved around and landed on Sam's leg as her eyes followed the teen. At this point Ruby barely even acknowledges the small touches between her mom and Alex and right now she doesn't have the mental capacity to care about it. "I was walking home from school, and this incredibly hot," she stops her pacing and stares at them for emphasis because this point needs to be made very clear, "I mean like, surface of the sun hot, boy was walking in my direction with this adorable fluffy looking Guinea pig that he had cradled in the palm of his hand…" she throws her scarf and backpack down on the floor next to the armchair with a small grunt and starts pacing again. "…and me, the lame ass…"
"Language." Sam warned.
"That. I. am." Ruby enunciates eyeing her mom, daring her to interrupt again, as she intentionally continues her story, "I walk up to him saying, in my most….UGHH…" she throws her head up towards the ceiling and slaps her hands over her face as another wave of humiliation overcomes her and muffles through her hands "sexy sounding voice…" she says with disgust at herself, she drops her head and rolled her eyes as she takes a step forward towards the couple.
"Yeah… I'm going to need to hear this voice for myself now." Alex chimes in and Ruby glares at her and her mother, who's nodding along in silent agreement. "She really knows how to paint a picture, right?" Sam says back as she nestles into Alex's arms just a bit more.
Ruby stares back at them unamused "laugh it up… let me know if you want me to continue. Or would you prefer some popcorn while you enjoy the entertainment I seem to be providing?"
"We're sorry honey, we're listening." Sam said as she gestured for her to continue.
"Anyways… I said to him, 'Hey what a cute little guy, can I pet him?'" She huffs loudly, her face turning a deeper shade of red before she swiftly pinches the bridge of her nose as she clenches her eyes shut in shame. "To which this aspiring greek god replies… 'you mean this muffin that I'm currently eating?'" She drops her hand from her face with a slap, and watches as Alex snickers to herself, while her mom stops the rumble of her own laughter with her hand. Ruby thrusted her other hand towards her room. "Yeah. So I'm off to write my will and jump off a cliff now. Ok? Ok. Goodbye." With that Ruby storms off to stew in the confines of her room and when Sam and Alex hear the door shut behind her another muffled "arrrghhhh!!!" Is heard through the closed door.
Sam and Alex were in tears.
"Oh man! I seriously don't think I've ever laughed that hard before." Alex said as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
Sam chuckled lightly and kissed Alex's cheek, they had been dating for about a month now and everything seemed too good to be true. "This is nothing, she's been coming home with similar stories for the past year now. I'm just grateful that for now that's all they are and she's not coming home with said boy. I'm not ready for her to be dating just yet."
Ruby was getting more and more comfortable with Alex's new status as her girlfriend and they were all three still learning how to share in each other's time and space, but she found that all it did was reaffirm her own belief that Alex fit in with the two of them like no other partner before her had. It was both terrifying and exciting at the same time and she was still having a difficult time believing it was all going as well as it had.
"If I'm still around for that moment it'll be my pleasure to scare the shit out of whoever he is." Alex said and Sam couldn't help but hear the wistfulness and hint of apprehension Alex's tone carried with the confession. They had talked briefly about Alex's past relationships, not enough to know all the details, but enough to understand Alex's fear of rejection.
"When." Sam said firmly, she looked at Alex and squeezed her leg. "I have no intention of letting you go anywhere anytime soon." Alex blushed and couldn't contain the shy smile that crossed her face. Sam smiled back and reached over and picked up her plate from the coffee table, "we should probably start getting ready for tonight soon." She mentioned as she stood up, a light knock came from her front door. "I'll get it." She set her plate on the kitchen counter as she made her way to the front door and was surprised when she opened it.
"Kara?"
"Is Alex here?" Kara asked and Sam noticed her tense shoulders and crouched and timid posture.
"Kara? What are you doing here? What's wrong?" Alex said as she met the two at the door. Sam stepped aside to let Kara in and Kara practically tackled Alex into a hug.
"Alex." She sighed in relief as she pulled Alex just a little closer to herself seeking out comfort that only her sister could provide.
"What happened?" Alex's hackles were raised and based on her tone of voice she was thinking worst case scenarios.
Kara pulled back from the embrace and sighed, crossing her arms protectively over her. "An incredibly long day happened. Andrea happened. She said some things that made me…" Kara's eyes darted to Sam before quickly moving back to Alex's. She shook her head. "Doesn't matter now. I just, it shook me up a bit and I couldn't really talk to Diana about it. After we had lunch she had to leave to check in on the venue and an issue with one of the vendors for the fundraiser tomorrow and I…" Kara's eyes welled up as her thoughts began to torment her all over again. "I —"
"Kara, what's wrong?" Alex asked gently, the worry in her voice still prevalent.
She guided them to the sofa and Kara sat down, her eyes lowered to study her hands as she tried to put her jumbled thoughts together. "What do you do, when what you thought you knew turns out to be only a fraction of what you actually know and now, after seeing the full picture, everything you've done in the past is colored differently. Every decision, every action…every relationship… is now seen with a different lens and you realize that if you knew what you know now you wouldn't have made the same mistakes, or choices." Kara looks at Alex pleadingly, the anguish written plainly on her face as Alex runs a soothing hand over her shoulder and back. "I wouldn't have made the same choices Alex."
"I'm sorry Kara, I— I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say." Alex said softly.
Kara shook her head again, her eyes troubled and conflicted. "I've been so blind and because of it I have lost out on something I never knew I could have, but I've wanted for so—" her voice quivered at the confession. "So long…" Kara dropped her head into her hands. Sam sat down on her other side and also placed a hand comfortingly over Kara's other shoulders offering up her own silent support. "And now I have this new thing, and it's great and it's one of the best things in my life right now, but it's not… now that I know…" She shook her head. "I don't know what to do with this information. I don't know what to do."
Alex scrunched up her eyes in concern as she tried to decipher Kara's meaning. "Without really knowing what you're talking about, all I can say is nothing is ever completely lost. And whatever it is you think you've missed out on, it's all just one attempt away at being within your grasp. You preach about fighting for what you want, but you've always had a hard time following your own advice. So whatever it is, fight for it."
"What if it's too late?" Kara asked.
"You can't know that without at first trying." Sam said softly.
Kara shook her head. "You don't understand, not without me telling you, but I won't betray her that way, I won't expose her to that. It wouldn't be fair. I shouldn't even know, I wasn't supposed to." Anger welled up at that briefly, knowing that Lena didn't want to tell her how she truly felt. Anger at the loss of her own choice in the matter. However that anger warred with her own guilt and turned to sorrow because now she understood the betrayal, and the hurt she caused, it was all so clear now. "She should hate me." Kara whispered the realization as if it were a question, regarding it as a wonder that despite everything, Lena doesn't. "She should hate me." Kara whispers again, with less wonder in her voice and more conviction as the truth of it sinks in.
"Andrea?" Alex asks.
Kara shakes her head. "No, well yes, her too. She does, for different reasons, but no, not her." Kara placed her head in her hands as Alex pulled Kara to her, looking up at Sam who had her eyes raised in question and Alex shrugged and held Kara closer.
Kara decided to wear the red dress again. It was a simple dress, elegant, and it didn't require her to do much thinking. She hadn't had the time to purchase anything new for the fundraiser and it would be more than sufficient. She finished applying her lipstick, which was a shade darker than her natural lip color, and did one final look in the mirror.
Her nerves were starting to get the best of her now. She spent the better part of the day avoiding Andrea, which wasn't super hard since Andrea seemed to have the same goal in mind. The rest of the day she spent trying not to think about tonight and seeing Lena.
Who has no idea how tumultuous Kara's mind is right now. Who practically a month ago stopped talking to her and started dating Andrea, and who just recently started reaching back out to her again. She glanced back down at the text still lighting her screen. Can't wait to see you tonight. She didn't know what any of it meant. "Argh! It doesn't matter!" Kara said to herself in the mirror. She spun around and started gathering some of the loose clothing in her room trying her best to stop dwelling and put her pent up energy to better use by tidying up. It doesn't matter, it shouldn't, because Lena moved on. It doesn't matter because she's with Diana and she's happy. It doesn't matter. Not anymore. Except that it does…and it's all she can think about.
The doorbell rang and Kara shook off her trepidations and shoved the anxiety she felt in the pit of her stomach into a deep dark hole then opened the front door.
"Diana." Kara breathed out as she took in Diana's appearance. "You look stunning." She really did, and the nerves she was struggling with just a few short seconds ago were already melting away at the sight of her. She was dressed in a sleek black dress that matched her hair in color. It had a deep plunging neckline that had a wrap which tied around her waist and flowed downward. Her satin locks had a gentle wave to them and she had it parted to the side and pinned securely. She was holding a single rose in her hand which she used to hide her smile before pulling it away from her lips offering it to Kara.
"Good, cause I wore it with every intention of drawing out that response and hopefully a lot more." Diana said suggestively. She took a step forward, into Kara's space and leaned in kissing her tenderly on the lips. Kara felt herself relax slightly as the tenderness of it gave way to something in her heart. Diana smiled affectionately at Kara, "I'm looking forward to showing you off tonight. You look incredible in that dress."
"You've seen me in it before." Kara tried to downplay.
"And I've seen you out of it. Either way, your beauty is unmatched. Aphrodite herself can't compare." Kara lightly chuckled and took a breath, twirling the rose in her hand spinning it back and forth between her thumb and index finger nervously. Diana took in her posture and her smile lowered in its intensity as her brow crinkled in concern. "What is it?"
Kara shook her head and touched Diana's arm "I don't deserve you." She licked her lips quickly and escaped whatever Diana might try to say next by speeding off in a flash to place the rose in a vase. When she came back to Diana's side she smiled too wide and motioned towards the door. "We should probably get going." Diana nodded her head and smiled back, as they made their way out, but there was a hint of a question that still lingered on her face.
"Andrea, Frank is at the front entrance." Lena stood up from her place on the sofa, tucking her phone into her handbag. They were running late and Lena tried her best not to be too annoyed by it.
Andrea came around the corner from her bedroom and smiled predatorily at Lena as her eyes snaked over her appearance. "Lena, what are you trying to do to me?"
Lena raised her eyebrows as Andrea approached her. "I'm trying my best not to drag you by the arm out the front door, right now. We are late."
Andrea laughed and pulled Lena flush to her waist wrapping her arms around her frame. "Well, I'm sorry if I was too distracted by this fantastic body. I had to make sure I dressed equally as alluring." She gave her a sly look. "Did I succeed?"
"The dress is pleasantly distracting." Lena said as she looked down at Andrea's rather revealing dress.
"Not as distracting as yours." Andrea said suggestively as her arms tightened around Lena's waist.
Lena placed her hands lightly on Andrea's shoulders and pushed gently releasing herself from Andrea's hold. "Well, thank you, but we really should be going now. I should've been there fifteen minutes ago and at this rate I'll be lucky to only be a half hour late."
"You are the main event, Lena. Plus it's fashionable." Andrea argued playfully.
"This event is a fundraiser for a project that directly impacts the lives of children. They are the main event, not me. And I hate being late, I'm not one to play that game. That was more Lillian and Lex's modus operandi." Lena said as she grabbed Andrea's things and opened the front door. Andrea smiled wistfully and followed Lena out of the building. "Well that was one thing in their favor at least. I never liked being early. It sends a desperate sort of message." She replied back. Lena shut the door behind them a little harsher than she had intended and handed Andrea her things. "Thank you, sweetie."
"Please stop calling me sweetie, it makes me feel like a child." Lena said as they made their way out where Frank was waiting.
Andrea's casual attitude shifted slightly as she really looked at Lena. "Am I missing something here or are you in a bad mood or something?"
Lena sighed heavily and stopped by the car, turning to face Andrea while Frank walked around to open the door for them. "Andrea, I'm late, and because of that I'm bordering on being agitated. I'm trying very hard to not take it out on you, so that we can both enjoy this evening. I for one have been looking forward to it for quite some time now. So how about we hit reset?" Lena asked.
"No reset needs to be done on my end. I was in a perfectly happy mood. You, however, could do with one." She shot back, which only seemed to drive Lena's agitated mood up to semi angry. She had levels of control, and she was using them to keep herself in check right now. She drew in a slow methodical breath through her nose, turned away from Andrea and gave Frank an appreciative smile for holding her door open while she ducked inside.
Not much longer now and she'd be there. She could apologize for her attitude later, but the real reason why she was in such a rush to get there was to see Kara. She was looking forward to spending the evening with her and Diana. Thanks to Andrea's earlier comment about double dates yesterday it was all but guaranteed they'd be around each other tonight and damn it all if she was more interested in seeing and talking to Kara than anything else. Her self preservation instincts had kept her away for too long and she found her mood seemed to be slipping back to what she had been like during that terrible year apart. Abrasive and short tempered. Andrea slipped in beside her and sighed heavily, looking down at her hands before quickly crossing her arms over her chest. Frank shut the door behind them.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you late. I took too long getting ready. I guess I was hoping I could make you look at me like—" Andrea laughed at herself in a quick sort of huff as she gripped her clutch slightly tighter. Lena watched as Andrea closed in on herself and suddenly felt very sorry for having been lost in her own thoughts and expectations. Andrea turned her head to face Lena and stuck her finger out pushing an imaginary button in the air. "Reset?" She asked with a small smile.
Lena smiled softly back and pushed her own imaginary button. "Reset."
Andrea breathed out a small exhale and nodded before looking back down at her lap. Lena placed her hand over Andrea's to draw her attention back. "You do look very beautiful tonight Andrea. I'm sorry my mood affected my reaction, I didn't mean for it to."
Andrea blushed and a more gentle smile swept across her face. "Thank you, Lena."
"Kara, you must try this. It is so good." Diana said happily as she held out a small cracker that had a thin slice of raw salmon and cream cheese along with a drizzle of some sort of sauce and garnished with the tiniest of greenery Kara had ever seen. She held a second in her other hand which she was already taking a careful bite out of. Her eyes danced as the flavor hit her tongue. Kara chuckled at Diana and her exuberance over the small hors d'oeuvre.
She took the one Diana offered and popped the whole thing into her mouth. Her eyes lit up at the taste and she hummed her agreement. Diana nodded along, her smile radiant as she laughed at Kara's reaction. "I know, it is so delicious! I must find more." She started looking for another server with a similar tray and Kara tapped her shoulder. "You know you don't have to grab one at a time…" Diana gave her a questioning look and Kara giggled, "We can sneak a whole tray." Kara whispered as she leaned forward into Diana space.
Diana clenched her teeth into an apprehensive smile. "No, we can't do that. It wouldn't be right." Kara stared back at her watching with amusement as Diana's apprehensive look gave way to a mischievous and rebellious one. "Ok, I'm in, what's the plan here, snatch it from one of the servers? Sneak into the kitchen? Steal an empty tray and go around collecting one cracker at a time from each server's tray filling ours up to the brim in the process?"
Kara laughed and sighed happily. "I think I've become a bad influence on you."
"You didn't know me as a child, and I like the last option best, I do enjoy a challenge." Diana laughed as she grabbed Kara's hand and pulled her towards the dance floor. "Come dance with me and then we will eat our weight in appetizers, before I have to meet with Lena and a few of our more promising benefactors."
Kara let herself be led to the middle of the dance floor and Diana pulled her in close. The band had just started playing and Kara found the choice of music a bit strange as the melodic sounds started to fill up the space. The men on stage were slightly older, they had a decent beat going and the guy on the electric guitar was clearly a professional player, but the lead was having a hard time hitting the same note twice vocally. Maybe it was the fact that she enjoyed singing herself, or that her kryptonian ears picked up the subtle flats and off kilter harmonies, but either way she was sufficiently distracted by it enough to point it out to Diana. Diana laughed. "Jess said something the other day too. She came into Lena's office very perplexed and asked over and over again if Lena was absolutely sure she wanted this band to play tonight." Diana looked back to the stage and then turned to Kara again. "She must have her reasons for it I'm sure."
Kara spun around and smiled. "I guess I'll ask her when I see her. Where is she by the way? Shouldn't she be here by now?"
Diana looked around the room and her brow furrowed slightly. "She must've ran into some traffic or something. I'm sure she'll be here soon."
"I hope so, I feel like I haven't seen her since she and Andrea started dating." Kara said more to herself than to Diana.
"After that scene Andrea pulled at your office I'm finding I don't care for her all too much myself." Diana said shortly. "But I suppose It's new and her time is consumed with learning how Andrea fits into her life, I'd imagine she's just enjoying what companionship can offer. If you know what I mean." Diana's voice dropped suggestively, she spun Kara out and back in, her hand sliding lower on her back as she drew her in closer and Kara had to refrain from grimacing at Diana's unwelcomed implication.
First thing she noticed was that the band was an absolute fail. Lena had to fight off the urge to scowl under her breath when she saw Diana and Kara already making their rounds on the dance floor. She knew she should've gone with the accordionist? Accordioner? Whatever you called him, she just couldn't justify lederhosen as proper attire to this event, no matter how much she's regretting the choice now. She knew she shouldn't be feeling this way. Not with her dating Andrea now. Yet the jealousy that continued to flare up at the pair was becoming a permanent state of being when in close proximity to the couple.
When a few of the other dancers parted ways revealing the happy couple in front of her, Lena's breath was taken away. She was wearing that sinful red dress tonight. It was bad enough she was already having a difficult time focusing on much else, but to see that dress in person was bringing up desires she was having a hard time locking away.
"Champagne?" Andrea asked, already offering up a glass.
Lena peeled her eyes away from Kara and smiled gratefully at Andrea. "Thank you." She took the proffered flute and with a quick flip of her wrist emptied it in two large gulps. Her eyes darted back to the dance floor just in time to catch Kara's eye mid spin. Lena smiled at her and raised the three fingers up from her glass in a subtle wave 'hello.' Kara stiffened and just as quickly stopped dancing as her attention was suddenly and completely fixed on Lena.
Lena wasn't sure what to make of Kara's expression. She looked both alarmed and eager to see her all at once. Diana had spotted Lena just as quickly and they both began to make their way over. Kara's eyes dart between Lena's and Andrea's before landing somewhere in the middle. It was an inexplicable reaction and Lena was having trouble understanding where this timidity was coming from.
"Good evening ladies." Andrea took a small step forward standing closer to Lena in the process.
Kara found Diana's hand and clutched onto it like a lifeline. She nodded to Andrea and shyly looked at Lena. "Hi."
"Hi Kara." Lena said much too softly for the no longer vacant and rather loud venue. She took a step forward and pulled Kara into a hug that was over much too quickly for either of their liking. Lena smiled at Diana. "Hello Diana."
Andrea set her champagne glass down on a server's tray as he walked by and focused her attention on Kara. "Kara, I want to apologize about the other day. I said some things that were out of line. I hope you'll forgive me."
Lena looked at Andrea surprised and confused at the apology. "Why, what happened?"
Kara's face paled as she stood frozen completely taken aback that Andrea would mention that here and now. "It's nothing." Kara said quickly. "Thank you for the apology Andrea."
"It was not nothing." Diana argued, her eyes narrowing at Andrea, who had the decency to at least look shamed. "She was exceedingly condescending to —"
"Diana, let's not rehash it." Kara said softly, begging with her eyes for Diana to drop it.
"You deserve more than an offhanded excuse to free her of guilt or blame." Diana protested.
"I had valid reasons, however my behavior was inexcusable and that's what I'm apologizing for." Andrea defended.
"What reasoning could you possibly have to say—"
"Diana please." Kara interrupted, fear written on her face and Lena was beginning to lose patience.
"Oh so my apology is unacceptable to you is it? Well she's fortunate to be given one in the first place and you're a blind fool if you don't see it for yourself." Andrea said hotly.
"Andrea!" Lena exclaimed, stunned at her brazen behavior.
"You are not the victim here Andrea, don't act like one." Diana shot back.
"No, I'm no victim. I know my place and I maybe the scraps leftover, but at least I'm aware of it." Andrea seethed.
"What am I missing here?" Lena demanded, as she looked between the three of them feeling very much out of the loop and hating it.
"Lena! Kara!" Sam called as she and Alex made their way over to the small group. She smiled happily and looked over at Diana. "Good evening everyone! Is it just me or is the entertainment this evening subpar? They are already taking a break and I just had to witness the drummer floss his teeth with a strand of his own hair." Sam made a 'blech!" noise then looked between the four of them and her smile slipped as she took in the growing tension. She pulled Alex into her side and leaned her head in "I'm sensing atrocious timing on our end. Take me away."
Alex however was studying Kara's increasingly panicked face and she made no move to walk away. "Kara?"
"I'm sorry, please excuse me." Kara escaped the group not sure where she was headed but needing to be anywhere but there. She heard three voices all calling out her name as she made a beeline to an open balcony.
"What the hell was that about?" Lena looked between Andrea and Diana.
"I'm going to go check on Kara." Alex said to Sam as she excused herself quickly from the group.
Diana and Andrea continued to stare at each other silently, neither looked like they'd speak anytime soon. Lena warred internally on whether or not to demand an explanation or follow behind Alex to find out if Kara was alright. In the end she left the two of them in favor of finding Kara.
Sam clapped her hands together and teetered from her heels to her toes as she was left alone with Andrea and Diana. "Maybe one of you can help settle a debate between me and Alex. Do either of you know what the difference is between a hamster and a Guinea pig, and which one would you think looks more like a muffin?"
Alex approached Kara leaning both arms against the balcony that looked over the city's skyline. The bay was just to their left and the reflection of the moon reminded her of a Van Gough painting the way the light flickered across the water's surface. She didn't say anything, knowing Kara was more likely to open up on her own terms. She flicked a pebble off the balcony's ledge and watched it disappear into the grass below.
"I don't even know if it's true." Kara said quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on the horizon.
Alex kept silent.
Kara sighed and held the balcony as she leaned back looking up at the sky. "Andrea believes that Lena has feelings for me."
"Ah." Alex said noncommittally, letting the silence do it's magic in Kara like she knew it would.
"I'm so confused Alex. I don't know if I want to believe it, because if it's true…" Kara turned and walked over to a bench that sat alongside the open doors leading back to the main hall. "Then I could've had something I've wanted since I first met her." Kara sighed heavily as tears overwhelmed her. "But I have Diana now, who is just…" her voice broke with emotion "so good to me, Alex. She's so good."
Alex came and sat by her sister with deeply sympathetic eyes as she watched helplessly from the sidelines. She pulled Kara into her side and wrapped her arms around her. "Giving that up on a sliver of a chance that maybe Lena feels that way about me… I'd be risking one of the few relationships that has given me some peace."
"What if it wasn't left to chance?" Alex asked. "What if you knew with certainty that Lena felt that way. Would you be willing to risk it then?"
"Without hesitation." Kara broke down at the admission. "What does that say about me, Alex?" She looked at her pleading desperately with her eyes. "What does it say, that I'd leave Diana so easily? It'd make me a monster." Kara cried at the admission of all that boiled up in her gut and raged incessantly in her mind since Andrea had dropped that bomb on her. Diana deserved better. Lena deserved better.
"Not a monster. Someone in love."
Kara sniffled and gasped "What?" Her body pulled away from Alex's gaining much needed space. Alex gave her an understanding smile. "You heard me."
Kara shook her head and was suddenly exasperated. "It doesn't matter though, does it? Cause it's all hypothetical. Like I said, Andrea could be wrong." Kara looked down as she repeated the mantra she'd been telling herself the last 24 hours, hell the last 3 years. "She has to be."
Alex's look of understanding turned to one of confusion. "What, why?"
"Because I failed her Alex! I failed her in every way that mattered to her. How can Andrea see anything different?"
