October 10th, 1975

The sleep-over had unintentional consequences in the form of the newly found friendship between the Gryffindor and Slytherin girls- therefore, Maia could no longer say the 'Gryffindor girls' and the 'Slytherin girls'. No, now it was simply, "the girls".

Which made her blame them all when their near-constant chatter of "have you noticed how tall Remus got? Merlin, he's filling out quite nicely." and "James's bloody amazing on a broom, have you seen his thighs? Quidditch thighs are Merlin's gift to mankind, I tell you." and "If Sirius smirks at me one more time, I'm going to climb that boy like a tree." got her to start to notice her male friends in a … different light.

She could admit to herself only, that her girlfriends were right, the boys had grown up a bit. Even Peter had lost a little weight and had grown into his height. All four of them, not forgetting Frank Longbottom, Evan Rosier, and Regulus Black* had gotten- for lack of a better word, fit.

Maia was brilliant, not blind.

Despite her constantly studying for her OWLs, she wasn't nearly as stressed this time- it could have been that her friends weren't only two oblivious males and she didn't despise her roommates. In fact, she found that she welcomed the gossip that came, as this time she wasn't bored to tears- it gave her a good reprieve from her studies.

This could possibly help explain when Maia froze when she heard Remus's voice while she was looking for a few books- Sirius had pulled her to the side a few days ago to ask for her help in researching for the Marauders' newest prank. He had claimed that Remus was too busy with the upcoming due dates and trying to get ahead for his next transformation. She of course agreed to do her part, if only because she never wanted to add more stress onto Remus; anything for their Moony.

So here she was, on the second Wednesday in October, kneeling down to look better at a few books in one of the Charms aisles in the Library when she froze at the sound of Remus's deepening voice. Her eyes widened slightly, her lips tilting up into a smile as she looked over her shoulder at the taller boy.

"I thought you already finished your Charms homework last week? Surely you can't be trying to get ahead- I'd have to call you a Lily Evans stand-in but seeing her at your table with the other girls…" He trailed off, joking, giving her an easy smile as he fingered the bottom of his jumper. Remus was always fidgeting- for as long as Maia has known him, he's never been able to stay completely still unless he's asleep.

She didn't know exactly why. She did know he wasn't nervous per se, more anxious. He refused to go see Madam Pomphrey about it, however, claiming that he's already such a burden on her with his monthly visits.

"I did, you're right. No, I'm just looking for books to help you and the boys with your prank." She rolled her eyes playfully before pushing herself off the floor. "Here, you carry these while I look, would you?"

She handed him the two books that she found. Maia had a broad idea of what to look for, Sirius only told her that they all needed to be able to conjure and control a semi-permanent rainstorm, swamp, and a pit of quicksand in a very small space. All at once.

Remus's eyebrows furrowed together as confusion swept over his face.

"Why wouldn't he ask me for help? I always research the spells."

"I- er, I'm not sure, actually. He didn't tell me. He just said that you were busy trying to get ahead of your schoolwork for the next moon," She whispered the last word as she reached up for the Charms & Spells book before ducking to reach the Book of Spells. She handed them to Remus who grabbed them easily, loading them on top of the other two he carried.

She bit her thumbnail absentmindedly, scanning the shelves for any other books that she could use for now. Maia didn't recall ever coming across a spell that could make quicksand nor a swamp. She didn't exactly have Fred and George here to buy a portable swamp. How did they figure that out?

Maybe… She scrunched up her eyebrows in thought before turning to Remus.

"You know what the prank is, correct? Or at least the spells Sirius and James need?" She asked the tall, sandy-blonde-haired boy. He nodded and shrugged.

"I know a little bit, I don't know what they plan on doing exactly but I know what you need to find for them, why?" He tilted his head, walking behind her as she made her way back to the table with her friends. They were silent, for once, all focused on their respective studies. Maia pursed her lips before scanning for any other open tables before making a B-line for one far enough away to avoid disturbing them.

After gesturing for Remus to sit, grabbing her own supplies and bag from the other table, she finally sat down and pulled out a clean sheet of parchment along with her quill and some ink.

"I've never come across a spell to make quicksand or a swamp for that matter. I know the boys are going to absolutely insist on them so I was wondering... Where the prank is taking place, someone is going to have to add a bunch of glass in the proximity; because you could combine Harenae Vitrum* with Arresto Momentum and maybe Inhaero Objectum* for the quicksand. You'd have to change the color because the sand will be blue otherwise. I'm not sure about the swamp just yet, however. Any ideas?" Maia was writing down almost everything she was saying, in order to look into how to combine the charms so Remus can help in his free time, as well as show James, Sirius, and Peter for their input. She knew they were as nosy as she was and liked to know every single step.

"That's brilliant! Changing shattered glass into sand, a sticking charm as well as slowing down movement… That's amazing, Maia! Thank you. The boys are going to love that. As for the swamp, maybe Aqua Eructo, Malus Odor*, Quae Regio*, color change spell, perhaps even Moss Incrementum* for the swamp. However, I'm not 100% sure. We'll have to fiddle around to make it work. Up to it?" Remus asked, laying his elbow on the table and leaning into his hand. He shot her another smile that gave her butterflies in her stomach.

She shrugged and shot him a smirk that was purely Black.

"I'll have to check my schedule. Let me get back to you."

"Has anyone noticed how Crouch keeps looking at Mary whenever he passes her in the halls? He looks like he wants to devour her." Lucinda was whispering to the group as Maia and Remus walked up. Lucinda flipped through her book on planetary rotations, looking for a reference she could add to her essay as Remus pulled a spare chair over. Maia took her previous seat.

"Regulus's friend? Ew! No, he doesn't! Does he really?" Mary gasped quietly, screwing up her nose as she remembered him.

"Just the thought of him makes me want to ward off boys for the foreseeable future," Maia mumbled, shuddering to herself. She pulled out an essay that she had previously been checking before researching the prank. She marked a few errors she found, biting at her thumbnail absentmindedly again.

Something that she found quite enjoyable was proofreading, which she decided to start her own little scheme under the Professors' noses at the behest of Remus. If Remus thought it was a good idea, then she couldn't see why she shouldn't- if Sirius had been the one to think of the small business idea she would have shut it down immediately.

As soon as she finished with hers, she had a list of other essays she'd have to work through, with dates on when they would have to be handed in. She charged 3 sickles per foot of parchment, which wasn't a lot, to be honest, but she never wanted to over-price.

Remus himself pulled out his own school work out of his patch-worked bag. The brown, leather satchel had been patched up so many times over the past five years, but Remus refused to let anyone get him a new one. He'd figure something out, he always said.

Maia eyed the frayed bag, looking at the torn strap, the broken buckles, the holes in both of the corners, and pursed her lips, deciding that she'll buy him a brand-new school bag for Christmas- then he wouldn't be able to refuse. She nodded once to herself before turning back to her proofreading.

Remus had finished his studying about two hours before Maia did and returned to the Tower- at least she assumed he did as she barely remembers him leaving let alone if he told her where he was going. The girls left at about the same time, leaving Maia alone to review papers and edit them as well as going over the charms that would aid the boys in their prank.

Judging by how impatient Sirius seemed as he pulled her away from the portrait door and up the stairs into their dormitory before she was even able to catch her breath- she was right. Remus must have told them that they came up with some good ideas.

As soon as the door was firmly shut behind them, Sirius let her arm go, only for him to turn to her with wide eyes-

"Well? Come on! Moony wouldn't tell us shit," He gestured for her to start talking.

Maia rolled her eyes and walked around him, making a show of setting her book bag on Peter's trunk and taking off her outer robes before slowly folding them. She took her time getting settled beside Peter on his bed, mumbling a 'hello' to him as she flashed James and Remus a smile in greeting.

About two minutes had passed in relative silence while Maia did her thing before she finally spoke directly to her exasperated cousin.

"What precisely did Remus tell you?" She asked, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

"He walked in and said something along the lines of 'Maia is a fucking genius, lads! We found some spells and came up with ideas for the prank.' and then wouldn't say anything else until you came back. We've been waiting for ages, Maia!" Sirius exclaimed, his hands gesturing all around as he was talking; was that a Gryffindor House trait, she wondered.

"When have you ever heard me swear like that?" Remus asked, stretching out his arms and legs on his bed. Maia promptly averted her eyes, scanning the room for literally anything else to look at. She tried in vain to control the blush on her cheeks, having seen Remus's shirt adjust on his back before she looked away.

Judging by James' eyebrows, now in his hairline, as he looked at her. He was failing at keeping his smirk at bay just as she was failing to keep her blush hidden.

She scowled at him, ever so slightly widening her eyes and shaking her head, hoping to Merlin he wouldn't say anything. Luck must have been on her side because directly after, Sirius started begging Maia to finally tell him what Remus and she had come up with.

"Alright, alright, fine you baby," She snapped, moving onto her knees so she could reach her bag and pull out her notes that she took while with Remus (as well as the extra notes she took after he left). She duplicated them four times before levitating the notes to Sirius, James and Remus and handing Peter his own copy.

"So, I wasn't able to find a spell to conjure up a swamp or quicksand so I attempted to work around that and make do with a combination of the spells that I wrote down. It'll be your job to figure out how to combine them to make them work. I did the work on finding the charms that should be able to be combined while Remus helped find the charms to make the swamp." She pointed to the spells for the quicksand that she found, as well as the footnotes along with some tips and pointers to make it easier on them.

From then on Remus took over explaining why he believed the spells they found would work and how they'd work with each other. After they were done explaining what they came up with, Maia leaned back on Peter's headboard and smirked at the expressions on the others' faces.

Peter was smiling, laughing silently in amazement, while James was running his hand through his hair- he had a smirk on his face. Sirius had a shit-eating grin on his face.

"You are in fact, a bloody genius, Maia," Sirius said, "Who knew having you and Moony teaming up would create such a good outcome?"

"-she completely ignored me all day today. She didn't even blink when I called her name this morning. Not even a sigh! Nothing! I don't know what to do anymore," James groaned, leaning his head over the side of Sirius's bed. Sirius was currently hunched over Remus's bed working on his History of Magic assignment that he put off as long as he possibly could without it being late.

Remus was down in the kitchens getting snacks for the group as they weren't going to bed for the foreseeable future- it was only eleven on a Saturday. Peter was sprawled across his own bed twirling his wand in-between his fingers as he blatantly ignored James, lost in his own thoughts. Maia was laying on the floor between Sirius and Peter's beds, staring up at the ceiling, absently-minded listening.

Maia's thoughts kept swinging back around to those few moments in the library. Whenever she blinked, she pictured Remus fiddling with his jumper, throwing her such an easy and relaxed smile. It made her happy that he felt comfortable around her and that he didn't hide his smile. He used to do that back in first year when he wasn't nearly as close to the boys' and her.

"Am I talking into the fucking void? Do any of you guys know what a conversation is? Maia, you seem to be good with words, what's a conversation, hm?" James asked, scowling down at her as his voice brought her back to Earth.

She blinked back at him before processing what he said and rolling her eyes.

"Fine, okay, you have my full attention, tosser," She retorted, pushing herself up to lean against the base of Pete's bed. "Continue, please." She raised an eyebrow, pointedly making eye contact with him as she gestured with her hand.

The evening had passed by relatively uneventfully, the topics of conversation flowed between the five of them as easy as ever, going from the prank to homework or detentions to dates before landing onto Lily; at least for James. While Maia's mind traveled back to Remus, as it had all evening after she was no longer completely focused on the stupid prank.

"No, see, I think I'd rather know what's on your mind," James raised his eyebrow, mocking her as he let loose the smirk he had tried to hold back earlier that same night. He turned onto his stomach, still laying horizontally on Sirius's bed with all his limbs just left dangling.

"How to get Regulus on my side of the prank war against Sirius this next summer," She replied after a moment of thought. She wasn't about to let James stumble upon this goldmine of information, not one of the boys could keep a secret (unless it included Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs). She'd rather not have Remus find out about her thoughts about him, no matter how… platonic they may or may not be.

"Oi!" Sirius cried, looking up from his parchment. "You fucking traitor, stop teaming up against me! He's my brother!"

"Yeah? He's my favorite cousin," She shot back, looking over at him from across the room.

"Fuck off."

"Don't you have an essay to fail?"

"Stop changing the subject, Maia!" James chastised her, grabbing her attention for the second time. Maia stuck her tongue out at Sirius, rolling her eyes once more when he flipped her off, before letting James be the center of attention again.

"I really was thinking about bribing Reg, what more do you want from me, four-eyes?"

It was then that Maia knew she made a small mistake. Unbeknownst to her, she had picked up a new defense mechanism of mild insults to deflect what she was really thinking, trying to throw off other people and get them riled up. As soon as she saw James's face light up in a shit-eating grin, she knew that she said something wrong, but she didn't have time to figure it out.

"I fucking knew it!" He exclaimed, leaning up and fist punching the air. "You like him, don't you?"

"Like who?"

"You have a crush?"

Peter and Sirius burst out at the same time, with utter confusion written on both of their faces. She tossed a glance at them before landing a death glare at James. Of all the things he could have said, it had to be the one thing that would give her absolutely no peace from the boys for months if she didn't give in; which she won't. However, she knew that once they started pestering her, Remus would join in, to her utter mortification.

"I do not!" Maia replied, her eyes darting to the dorm door, hoping that Remus hadn't just walked through. The boy sometimes had impeccable timing, she just hoped now wouldn't be one of those times. "I don't know where you got that idea from."

"Yeah? Then what was that blush earlier?" James countered, pushing himself into a sitting position, crossing his arms over his chest as he raised his eyebrows.

"You know, I think I need to double-check my Astronomy chart! I'll see you guys tomorrow!" She chirped, pushing herself up as quickly as she could, and reached for her back only for it to zoom away from her and into Peter's hands. "Tossers, all of you!" She exclaimed, putting her hands on her waist.

"Oh no, you're not getting out of this easily! Come on, we only ever hear James's infatuation, give us a change of pace!" Peter whined, cocking his head in James's direction. He even sat up in his bed and put his wand down, giving her his undivided attention.

"I'll tell the girls AND Regulus that you like someone if you don't tell us!" Sirius gloated, raising his eyebrows at James when he let out a cackle.

"You'll have us bothering you on top of Regulus and the girls- not a moment of peace, better just tell us now!" James replied, splaying his hands out on either side of him in a 'what-can-you-do' gesture.

"Godric, give me strength," Maia mumbled under her breath, closing her eyes and pinching the bridge of her nose. What she didn't understand is how James connected the dots so fast, it was one instance that he saw her blush and it had to do with his best friend. She can't remember a time where she'd done it before tonight. It all started because her girlfriends were gossiping about Sirius, James, and Remus that very day.

Surely that was all it was, right? It wasn't actual, genuine … She refused to even finish that thought. He was her best friend for Merlin's sake. It was the equivalent of having something for James! Or Peter!

She was saved from having to think of a reply though, as Remus chose that exact moment to open the door, his arms heavy with snacks. He had butterbeer and hot chocolate floating behind him in a straight line, that went to their respective owners with just a flick of his wand.

Remus handed out a bowl of crisps, a bowl of baby carrots, two cherry tarts, a plain bagel with cream cheese to Sirius, James, Peter, and Maia respectively before keeping a small plate of brownies for himself. Maia sucked in her lips to fight a smile from overcoming her face at Remus's antics. She was not about to prove James right.

"What did I miss?" Remus asked, the corner of his lips quirking up into a half-smile before he sat on the floor next to Maia. She pointedly looked everywhere but at James, instead turning to the tall, lanky frame to her left and gave him a smile in thanks.

She quickly took a bite to hide the traitorous smile on her face, bumping her shoulder into his as he started eating his brownies. It took everyone a few moments to finish their first bites before speaking, and sure enough, James had the honor of Maia's mortification.

"Maia has a crush."

"You're dead to me, James Fleamont Potter."

October 16th, 1975

It was the third Thursday of October, four days before the full moon that the Marauders chose for their prank. They didn't tell Maia much, as she wasn't a part of their little club, aside from "stay away from the Greenhouses."

Maia had previously thought that they would have wanted to prank Filch, but one devious prank on the caretaker a year was enough for them. They learned early on in First-year that if they pranked him more than once, he'd go straight to Dumbledore, complaining. However, this prank wasn't good enough to ruin Filchs' week, apparently.

The only other people that knew that there was a prank planned for the day were Severus and Reg, lest a fight break out between Sirius, James, and Severus if the latter was caught in the crossfire. She also knew that if Reg stumbled upon it, he'd get the boys back- one prank war between the Black cousins was bad enough, they didn't need to bring their summer activities into their school year.

Honestly, her day was too packed with classes; she started with a double Transfiguration with Hufflepuff, then she had Alchemy- which she only had on Thursdays-, then she had double Potions with Gryffindor; despite the boys Not Talking about The Prank, they were still as giddy as they could be. Children in Honeydukes, the lot of them. Her last class of the day (before midnight, that is) was Herbology, not to mention she had Astronomy at midnight, which bored her to tears. When she wasn't eating or in classes, she was seen in the Library, usually helping Lily or Emma with whichever essay they were on.

Maia had been practically flying down the steps of the castle and onto the grounds because she was late. Lucinda had to borrow her textbook and forgot to give it back to her before classes so after a short trek down to the dungeons, Maia was rushing as fast as she could, dodging students left and right.

She didn't even notice the large group of students standing in front of Greenhouse 3 before she ran directly into Severus's back and knocked them both down along with a few other Slytherin students.

"What the fuck, Black? Watch where you're going," Severus swore, shock written on his face before he scowled at her. He stood up, brushing off his robes before shouldering his bookbag once more.

The girl rolled her eyes and stood up, brushing the dead grass off her tights and skirt before picking up the books that she knocked out of her arms when she had fallen. "If you weren't standing there like a pillar, I wouldn't have run into you. Why are you standing around anyway?" She asked, looking around, finally noticing her Herbology class all blatantly staring at a very quickly sinking greenhouse.

"Oh. Oh bugger," She muttered to herself, running her hand through her hair. She jammed her hand into her stuffed bag, looking for a hair-tie to put up her massive mane of hair. Fixing the messy bundle at the top of her head, she sighed, exasperated that she had forgotten to tell her friends that she had Herbology today so they could have left her out of it.

"Seems to me that you need to keep that cousin of yours on a tighter leash," Severus retorted, sneering at the quicksand devouring the building they were meant to be in.

"I'm not his fucking keeper, Sev," She snapped, turning to him with narrowed eyes. Her arms automatically crossed in front of her chest to avoid smacking him; he wouldn't take as well to that as Sirius would've. "Kindly keep your comments to yourself."

As she didn't grow up with the lanky, black-haired boy, she didn't feel the need to coddle him and tip-toe around his feelings as Lily did; to be frank, she understood Lily and why she was cautious with her best friend. She'd be a hypocrite if she didn't, after all, she was the exact same way with Ronald- however, just like with her freckled friend, it didn't give Severus the right to be a dick for no good reason.

She refused to let it slide, and he knew it.

. . .

It took all of an hour after Professor Sprout dismissed Herbology for the rest of the day for the news of the newest prank spread around the castle like fiendfyre. It took ten minutes after that for all four of the Marauders to get detention- Sirius and James got detention every day for two weeks straight with Flitwick and the newest Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Professor Gifford respectfully, then every weekend until the end of November, Peter got detention with Madam Pomphrey helping in the Hospital Wing every day for two weeks, while Remus ended up with Professor Slughorn every weekend for a month.

It seemed that the Professors were finally realizing that all four of them were involved and learning to split up their detentions and detention times.

Gryffindor Tower lit up with yells and cheers as soon as Sirius, the last Marauder to finish up with detention that night, walked through the portrait. Immediately his face lit up in a wide smile. The occupants of the common room parted like the Red Sea as he made his way to James, Peter and, Remus; making sure he high-fived his classmates on his way, gaining pats on his shoulder and light slaps on the back.

The prank was a catch, it seemed.

"Oi, Maia!" Sirius called over the noise, once he realized his favorite cousin wasn't immediately in his face with a scowl, ready to scold him. "You're welcome for getting you out of Herbology!"

Maia, who was making a point to ignore all four of them, lest she smile because she -was allowed to be amused, damn it!- and focus on reading through some new essays people had her service, snapped her neck up so fast she actually cracked it (which was a blessing, she supposed, she'd had a crick in her neck all day).

"You knew?! You, Sirius Orion Black, knew I had that class today? And you chose that specific hour to do your stupid prank?!" Her eyes widened as she felt her anger steadily rise each moment she looked at his stupid smirk.

"Always the tone of surprise, why do you continuously think I'm an idiot?"

"Because you are," Lily responded, pushing her way through the crowd of fellow Gryffindors to get to the table that Maia was at, ready to work on her own homework that she brought down with her. "Now go away, Black. Go annoy a poor Hufflepuff with stories of your glorious detention, would you?"

Sirius smiled down at the redhead, his smile straining a little. Maia saw his jaw twitch as his sudden anger started to flare. He knew better than to lash out over a small comment, however. Instead, he cocked his eyebrow and smirked down at the redhead. "What's got your knickers in a twist, Evans?"

"Besides your existence? Nothing much," Lily hummed, fingering through the pages of a textbook that Maia couldn't quite see. Lily's hair was tied in a french braid today because her hair was getting longer but she wasn't sure if she wanted to cut it or keep growing it out. Maia thinks she should grow it out but she's well aware that Lily could pull off any hairstyle. She was just annoyed at the awkward length, slightly above her breasts.

"Oi! That's my line, you can't just steal my catchphrases, Red!"

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't aware that the English language belonged to Sirius Black, you should tell your mate; he uses far too many of your own words for his own good." Lily deadpanned, refusing to look up at him as she scribbled on her parchment. Maia was too busy watching her two friends argue; it was like a tennis match.

"The fuck did I do to you, Evans?" Sirius spat, dropping his smirk as he crossed his arms in front of his chest. "We barely talk, how could I of pissed you off this time?"

"Remember that little prank you genius's pulled? Well, I'm not sure if you remember but Professor Sprout gave us all a project and I was paired up with Damocles Belby. We were working on something that we could also use for our Potion's project next year you absolute prat. Something to help Remus." She snapped, looking up at the boy. She slammed her book closed, grabbed her bag, and pushed through the crowd once more. Maia could barely see her walking up the girls' staircase.

"To help… There's no way she knows. Absolutely no way." Sirius stuttered, his eyes widening as he slowly sat down in the seat that Lily abandoned.

Maia leaned back in her chair, still looking at the staircase. She honestly had no idea if Lily was indicating Remus's furry problem or not but she knew that Remus would panic about it and completely shut everyone out if someone found out and he wasn't the one to tell them. How did Lily find out?

Granted, he turns every full moon and his symptoms are standard for a werewolf. His scars are a dead giveaway that something bad happened to him. She took Astronomy with the Gryffindors so she knew Lily paid attention to the moon cycle; Maia shouldn't be surprised but she was. Someone had to tell Remus before Lily did.

Maia turned back to her black-haired cousin, her face paling slightly.

did anyone catch a little reference to all the young dudes by mskingbean89? if you haven't read it, it's another marauders' era fic, that goes through their years at hogwarts plus afterward. it only features James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter along with the girls. It's so good and so popular. there is even an article written about this fic- it's that good. you can find it on ao3.

*i made up that spell. i deadass googled english to latin translation and typed in 'sand glass' so! it's intended to be the spell Dumbledore used in the ministry when Voldemort shattered the windows and went to stab Dumbledore with the shards, but Dumbledore turned it into sand.

* also made up that charm, it's the incantation for the sticking charm.

* made-up spell for bad smell.

* made-up spell for the containment spell since there wasn't an incantation.

* made-up spell for moss growth, didn't know if i should use bacteria growth or moss but decided on moss.
