At least, that was how it was supposed to be. Instead, 6 different possibilities of Emiya Shirou across different timelines and realities are summoned to fight one another for the Holy Grail. Rider's personality:

An innocent version of Emiya Shirou, one that was uncorrupted by Kiritsugu's ideals. Mostly a normal Japanese schoolboy that you could find anywhere in Japan, but he has a hero complex.

However, unlike Emiya Shirou, he does not have Survivor's Guilt, and treasures his own life. He does not put his life in great risk recklessly, but does do so fearlessly when he believes has a good chance at saving someone. He does not believe in striving to save everyone (knowing the futility, impossibility, and stupidity of trying to achieve such an ideal), but instead strives to save at least those who are suffering right in front of him, and those of whom he can see and reach. He has no qualms about letting some people die in order to save others, but unlike EMIYA, he does not believe in or abide by the principle of sacrificing the few to save the many.
