Chapter 6
Darkspace in the Bacrita Sector
Chiron CIC
"Sir no signs of Cylons and all ships accounted for" said Lt. Anders. Anders noticed that the civilians ships were sloppy in their jump spacing. She would need to come up with a plan for that and discuss it with the Old Lady.
"Thank you Lt." said Cmdr. Jasper. "Tell the Raptors to launch and proceed to their scout locations." Now was the time to actually figure out what they had available to them. Ships always needed something after a while and hopefully they had the spares or ability to replace them. Time to delegate this off to my officers. "Major you have the bridge."
Chiron Commander's Office
"OK everyone we have time until Juno is back dropping off her sensor buoys. Lt. Swanson pick a team and send over to the Respite to coordinate with Maxon. I want to know personnel, cargo, supplies, maintenance issues, and capabilities off all the ships."
"Yes sir. Can I request Chief Aspers and some of the deck crew to come along to check out the shuttles" asked Lt. Swanson. His people knew engines but small craft were not their specialty.
Seeing that the Commander didn't seem to object Lt. Greene replied, "That should be fine. We are currently overstaffed and Juno and the others should not be back for 12 hours or so. I will have a shuttle prepped."
"Alright let's get to it" said Jasper. Next on her list was talking to Lt. Anders and then Marton.
Maxons Respite CEO Office
Lt. Swanson looked over the list of ships. Maxon and her son seemed to have her things lined up fairly well. One thing did seemed slightly odd though. "This all looks good but I have to ask. A lot of these ship names are well kind of different."
Jessi Maxon turned to her son and he did look a little embarrassed. "Carl was a fan of "Swords of Kobol" when he was younger. When we bought the new ships for the mining job his grandfather let him name them. The crews kind of liked it so the naming pattern stuck around."
"After we are done with the Respite I would like to check the other ships. Also we need to know a full manifest of all parts, equipment, and cargo. Let's start with the Dilvistro and Fornosto since fuel and food are critical. If I can use some of your people to help with that it would speed things along. However my people will supervise and you need to switch the inspection crews to different ships." Swanson knew that new eyes noticed issues and might find whatever the crews were hiding.
"Sounds good. I will put Carl in charge as he has been the manager of our support ships for the last few years" said Jessi Maxon.
Carl Maxon was a bit annoyed. Yes they needed the Chiron but he did not want Blue Boys bossing his people around. And the implication that his ships might not be up to code was a bit insulting. "I will have a team ready for when the check on the Respite is done."
"Thank you Mister Maxon" said Swanson. "Also Miss Maxon I would like you to have all your people fill out this personnel jacket. Please make clear to be honest and that any "questionable" past at this point does not matter." People lied on job interviews and what might have been something that might have kept them from being hired by MM could be helpful now.
"I will get HR on it. Also please just call us Jessi and Carl. We are going to be spending a lot of time together" said Maxon. Also she could see that her son was feeling a bit overwhelmed. "Carl you and Lt. Swanson let me know if you find anything unusual on the Respite. And Carl let any of my people know that if any BS happens between us and any Rollins ships that they will get 3 months cleaning duty on the Lita."
Author's Notes
Swords of Kobol is a LOTR equivalent in the Colonies. There was a made up language using ancient Kobol as a template and it became a minor conlang. Or I just used google translate to pick some words in Greek and then changed or misspelled a lot of them. When Robert Maxon got the Ofis B contract he needed more ships and let his grandson name them. The names while a bit dorky were popular with the crew and they kept it going for most of their ships.
Carl is fairly OK at his job but he is definitely the "bosses son" here. He was put in charge of the "support" ships of Maxon Mining probably too quickly and he has always know that when his mom retires he will be put in charge.
In case anyone is wondering about who is piloting the Chiron's shuttles there are people who are rated for shuttles or maybe Raptors in non emergency (milkruns or "move this Raptor 10 meters"). I am using Seelix here as my example. In the show the Raptors were used for basically everything and this was probably far more to do with set designs on the show than anything else.
The personnel jacket is like what happened with Kat. A company might not hire someone who admits to being in prison for smuggling or whatever but right now any odd skills might be useful.
These are all fairly background things before we get to the "here are the ships and people and this is the master plan" (the lists of ships are coming soon) thing that need to happen.
