"June, June!" I heard a familiar voice whisper. I sat up, with blurred eyes from just waking up. I rubbed my eyes to see more clearly and saw Glenn beside me. I only knew it was him because of the baseball cap he always wore.
"Hey, I'm going with the group now, alright?" He whispered to me. I nodded, wrapping my arms around his neck. He embraced me tightly, returning the hug. Ace had gotten up and licked both of our faces as we hugged. I giggled at Ace and heard Glenn do so as well. I released him from my hug and let him leave the tent. Before he closed the tent completely, he said one more thing.
"I'll be back for dinner at the latest. I promise," He said.
"Okay," I replied.
"Goodbye, June," Glenn spoke, zipping up the tent.
"Goodbye," I whispered back. I heard his footsteps leave to the U-Haul. The U-Haul's engine revved up and the U-Haul took off. I listened as the vehicle drove away. I couldn't help the anxiousness settling in my stomach and my eyes watered. I sat alone in my tent, with only Ace with me. I hugged Ace as he sat beside me, and tried my best to keep my composure. I sniffled and wiped away some stray tears, but sucked it up and got ready for the morning. I slipped on my boots, left the tent, and saw Shane was the one on watch duty. I waved as I passed by, hoping that he hadn't heard my sniffling.
I walked to the edge of the quarry where I was out of Shane's eyesight. I sighed to myself, trying to keep calm. Ace had followed me and laid next to me. He set his head in my lap. I pet him gently, which helped ease my nerves. Glenn will be fine. All of them will be fine as long as they aren't idiots.
I looked down into the quarry with my legs hanging off the side of the rock wall. I could hear the water moving below from the light breeze. The breeze made the morning quite chilly but I had a long sleeve shirt on, so it didn't bother me too much. The cool, fresh air filled my lungs and whispered around me. I watched as the sky turned from a starry night sky into a bright orange collage of colors. The sun rose on the horizon over the trees. I heard some voices over by the campfire and decided to leave my lookout spot.
"Good morning," I called to Lori, Carl, Shane, and Dale. I got a few good morning greetings back as I sat with the rest of the group who was up. I smiled at Dale and sat next to him. Ace curled up by my feet, resting while he could. Amy woke up and came out too as soon as I showed up.
It didn't take long for the sun to fully rise and the whole group to come out. I ate breakfast with everyone, like always, and then everyone went off to do their own thing. Amy was sent out to go get some firewood; Dale was sitting with Shane while Jim took over watch duty on the RV. I sat by myself, playing with the dirt with the stick I had in my hand. I drew a little dog face in the dirt and showed Ace proudly.
"Look bud, it's you," I told him, using the stick to point at my drawing. He didn't understand and took the stick in his mouth. He took the stick from me.
"What? You wanna play fetch?" I asked him. His nubbed tail wagged eagerly and he dropped the stick in front of me. I threw the stick for him, watching him dart off into the woods to find the stick. I waited a moment and watched as Ace trotted up to me proudly with the stick again. We continued to play fetch until my arm got tired. I left Ace to play with his stick. I walked over to Dale who was still sitting with Shane. I waved to Jim on my way there once he spotted me from the top of the RV. He waved back quickly before returning to keep watch.
"Hey," Dale greeted me as I approached. Shane waved as a greeting to me, leaving off to talk to Carl and Lori. I sat in the lawn chair that Shane was once in beside Dale. We had set up a few lawn chairs around the fire. He beside me in his own chair.
"You alright with Glenn gone?" Dale inquired. I nodded to him in reply.
"You're worried about him," Dale said what I was thinking.
"Shane said if they get into trouble out in the city, they're on their own," I told him.
"If we can go and help, we will. But if it's a lost cause and we know we can't help, we can't risk it," Dale said.
"I promised Glenn I'd stay if they got into trouble," I told him.
"It would be wise to keep that promise," Dale replied. I nodded to him but then something caught my attention. I heard a static voice come from the radio.
"Hello, hello. Can anybody hear my voice?" A man from the radio spoke. Amy had just come back from finding some firewood and answered the man.
"Hey, hello?" Amy answered. Dale and I rushed over to see what was going on.
"Can anybody hear my voice?" The voice asked again.
"Yes, I can hear you. You're coming through. Over," Amy spoke into the radio.
"I anybody reads, please respond. Broadcasting on the emergency channel. Will be approaching Atlanta on Highway 85. If anybody reads, please respond," The voice said. Whoever it was couldn't hear us.
"We're just outside the city. Damn it! Hello? Hello?" Amy tried to respond, but only static came through now.
"He couldn't hear me. I couldn't warn him," Amy told Dale.
"Try to reach him again. Come on, son, you know best how to work this thing," Dale said to Shane. I saw Lori approach as well because of the commotion.
"Hello, hello. Is the person who called still on the air?" Shane asked only getting static. He waited a moment for a reply before speaking again.
"This is officer Shane Walsh broadcasting to person unknown. Please respond," Shane spoke into the radio. The radio crackled but there was no response.
"He's gone," Shane told us.
"There are others. It's not just us," Lori said.
"We knew there would be, right? That's why we left the C.B. on," Shane replied.
"A lot of good it's been doing and I've been saying for a week we ought to put signs up on 85 to warn people away from the city," Lori told Shane.
"Folks got no idea what they're getting into," Amy said.
"Well, we haven't had time." Shane retorted. I squinted my eyes at him, knowing that was a big fat lie.
"I think we need to make the time," Lori replied. I nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, that's a luxury we can't afford. We are surviving here. We are day to day," Shane spoke.
"And who the hell would you propose we send?" Dale asked Lori.
"I'll go. Give me a vehicle," Lori snapped back.
"Nobody goes anywhere alone, you know that." Shane retorted.
"I'll go with her," I replied.
"No June!" Shane fired back.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because you are a child and no one is going to the highway on my watch," Shane exclaimed. Lori stormed off as I looked at Shane with disgust.
"Yes sir," Lori snapped at Shane as she passed him. Carl went chasing after her, but Shane stopped him.
"Hey, hey, hey. Go on, take a seat buddy. You're alright. Go on. You're alright," Shane told Carl. I looked at Dale in shock that he was letting this happen. Shane walked off to find Lori and Carl came up to me with a worried expression.
"Dale," I looked to him for any sort of explanation. He shook his head and turned to walk off.
"Every person who goes on that highway is at risk. We should be doing something!" I exclaimed to him.
"June-" Dale started, but I was having none of it.
"No! Every person who goes into the city because we didn't warn them is on US!" I argued.
"We will make time tomorrow, alright? I promise that I will go with you. I will make the time, okay?" Dale tried to calm me down.
"And what about that man on the radio?" I retorted.
"We can't do anything today," Dale told me.
"No, we can. Shane's choosing not to," I snapped, walking off to Ace. Carl had left at that point to find his Mom. I called as to follow me as I made my way down into the quarry to the water's edge. I needed a minute. None of this is okay. I walked along the edge of the pond, thinking to myself and trying to calm down. I hated this. Shane takes over and now we're just leaving people to die. I guess since we didn't find them on the highway, we won't take them in or warn them at all.
I stayed down by the water, sitting on a rock with my back to the camp area. I couldn't see it from below but I turned from it anyways. I watched the tree line as Ace stood beside me. Part of me wanted to run into the woods while Jim wasn't looking and get some time outside the camp. The urge to run into the woods became stronger but then I heard a call from behind me.
"June! June!" Dale was walking along the water's edge to get to me. I turned away from him, returning my gaze to the trees.
"June, come on," Dale panted as he finally came up to me. I looked over at him with displeasure written all over my face.
"June, we can't do anything right now," Dale said, trying to reason with me.
"We can, Shane has decided not to," I stated with an angry tone.
"I- I know, but there isn't much we can do. I promised Glenn that I'd keep you safe. I'm not going to let you go off by yourself or get yourself into trouble while he's gone. I don't break my promises," Dale said, sitting beside me.
"I hate sitting here. Shane is letting an innocent man go into a city full of blood-thirsty walkers. That doesn't sound like a cop to me," I argued back.
"I agree with you but we need to be on Shane's good side. Just for today," Dale responded. I stared at him for a moment, before looking at the tree line. I nodded reluctantly with a frown. I still hated it.
"Thank you, now please come back up to camp," Dale said. I got up with him, and he guided me back to camp. Ace got into the water and shook water all over us once he got out. I giggled with Dale and got back to camp. Dale and I took watch duty and left Jim to work on the RV since it was having some troubles.
"Dale!" Lori called up to Dale and I. "I'm heading out."
"Carl, sweetie, I want you to stay where Dale can see you," Lori said to Carl.
"Yes, mom," Carl replied. As Lori turned to walk off, Dale called down to her.
"You too! Don't wander too far. Stay within shouting distance. If you see anything, holler. I'll come running," Dale said to her.
"Yes, mom!" She yelled back as she walked off into the woods with a red bucket in hand. Jim asked Dale to come down and see something. I wasn't paying much attention to them though.
"June," Dale grabbed my attention. He handed me his binoculars.
"You think you can take watch for a minute?" Dale asked. I nodded eagerly taking the binoculars from him. I spied through the binoculars, keeping an eye on everyone, and the tree line. I didn't hear much of what was being said below me but Amy was pacing nervously. I saw Dale and Jim looking frustrated at the RV. They had taken off the grill to see what was going on. I did another look around to make sure the area was clear when I heard the radio on top of Dale's RV say something.
"Hello, base camp. Can anybody hear me? Hello, hello. Can anybody hear me?" I heard T-Dog's voice come over the radio. I rushed to answer as well as Dale. Some of the group were gathering because of the radio.
"T-Dog? We can't hear you very well," I said into the radio. I handed it to Dale once he got up onto the RV.
"Reception's bad on this end. Repeat! Repeat!"
"Shane? Is that you?" I heard T-Dog ask from the radio.
"Is that them?" Lori asked from below us.
"In deep shit- trapped in a clothing store," We heard the radio say. My heart pounded, hoping I had just misheard them.
"Did he say they're trapped?" Shane confirmed my worst fear. Tears were pricking my eyes.
"Geeks all over the place! Hundreds of them. We're surrounded," T-Dog explained. I was now on my knees just listening as I cried.
"T-Dog? T-Dog! Repeat! Repeat!" Dale called into the radio. Nothing but static was heard. The group looked mortified. I heard Amy yelling about something, but I couldn't hear anything she was saying. Dale wrapped me up in his arms as I did everything I could to stop crying.
"I knew I should have gone…" I whimpered to Dale. My lip quivered as I sobbed into him.
"No, it's going to be okay. If you had gone we would have lost you too," Dale said, embracing me tightly. I couldn't even think straight. I felt delirious but I couldn't help my reaction.
"It's alright, it'll be alright," I heard Dale assure me. I was rocked from side to side by him in an attempt to ease my crying.
"I should have been there," I said. Before Dale could even try to deny my statement, I repeated it.
"I should have been there… I should have been there to help… I- I should have been there," I sobbed as I repeated myself. I hiccuped as Dale still tried to comfort me. I saw a figure through blurred eyes come and hug me.
"It's going to be okay," I heard Carl's voice tell me. I hugged Carl, feeling him hug me as well.
"Come on, let's go to your tent," Carl said. I nodded, letting him lead me down the ladder. I sobbed as he guided me to my tent. Sofia joined us, trying to comfort me.
"I'm sorry, June," Sofia said as I sat down on my sleeping bag. She hugged me from behind, leaning her head on my shoulder. I felt Carl sit beside me and wrap an arm around Sofia and I both. I couldn't help but sob into my friends' embrace. I couldn't calm down as I had before. I lost Glenn… It felt like the world had crashed down on my life all over again. First my parents, now Glenn and Jacqui. Then what? Is Dale next? I heard someone enter the tent and looked up with teary eyes at who it was. I couldn't quite see but I recognized her voice.
"June, it's going to be okay," I heard Lori say and reach a hand out to me. She set it on my head, brushing away the hair that covered my face.
"It's not okay," I replied.
"I know it isn't right now… but it will be," She said. I nodded, shrinking back into Carl and Sofia's embrace. I was finally calming down but nothing was right. I lost my family already. I just got this one and they're already being ripped away from me.
"Hey, sweetheart, come here," I heard Lori's voice call. She scooted closer to me and brought me into a hug. Sofia and Carl also still embraced me as Lori joined in to comfort me. I felt her hand run through my hair in a soothing manner. Her soft voice and her stroking my hair slowly got me to calm my crying.
I pulled away from her once calmed down and pushed the hair out of my face. She wiped away my tears and pulled my hair into a low ponytail for me. She tied up my hair and gently hugged me again.
"Just so you know, you can always stay with us. I'll take care of you just like I do Carl. alright?" Lori said sweetly. Her voice calmed me. I nodded, taking a deep breath. I was basically sitting in her lap now as she comforted me.
"Okay, why don't you take a minute and stay with Carl and Sofia for a bit?" Lori suggested. I nodded to her and she left me with Carl and Sofia.
"Are you okay?" Sofia asked with a hand on mine. I nodded, feeling exhausted.
"Do you want to take your mind off of it?" Carl asked. I nodded again. I looked down at my hands as Carl left the tent.
"I'll be right back!" He called, leaving me with Sofia. She didn't know what to say. She sat beside me, keeping me company. It didn't take long for Carl to run back. He brought a deck of cards and a chocolate bar. I smiled at his efforts, still teary-eyed, but much calmer. Carl split the chocolate bar up between us and passed out cards. I tried to just focus on the game but my brain couldn't stop thinking of Glenn. As we finished the third game, we heard a loud car alarm.
"What is that? Is that them?" I heard Amy call. I darted out of the tent to the RV to see what was happening.
"What is it?" Amy called up to Dale.
"A stolen car would be my guess," Dale said. I watched as the bright red car sped up to us, stopping abruptly. The group had gathered together at that point to know what all the ruckus was about. I saw Glenn come out of the car and tears pricked my eyes again.
"Holy crap, turn that damn thing off!" Dale called. I ran to Glenn, just as Amy did.
"I don't know how!" Glenn called back.
"Pop the hood! Pop the hood, damn it!" Shane yelled.
"Is Andrea alright? Is she okay? Where is she?!" Amy spoke over Shane. Dale began to yell about the car alarm as Glenn popped the trunk. The alarm stopped as Jim pulled something out.
"She's okay! She's okay! Everyone is!" Glenn exclaimed. I hugged him, grabbing his attention finally. I looked up at him with teary eyes. He picked me up and I wrapped my arms around his neck to hold me up.
"I kept my promise. I'm fine, June," Glenn assured me. I held to him tightly feeling like I lost him not even an hour ago.
"Are you crazy driving this wailing bastard up here? Are you trying to draw every walker for miles?" Shane yelled at Glenn. I just sobbed into him, glad he was okay.
"I think we're okay,"
"You call being stupid okay?"
"Well, the alarm was echoing over all these hills. It'd be hard to pinpoint the source," Dale reasoned. Shane looked displeased with his answer.
"I'm not arguing, I'm just saying. It wouldn't hurt you to think things through a little more carefully now, would it?" Dale told Glenn.
"Sorry," Glenn replied. He rubbed my back to soothe me.
"Andrea's okay?" Amy asked again.
"Yes, everyone's fine. Well, Merle not so much…" Just as Glenn said this, the U-Haul came up. Everyone went to greet their family and friends.
"Hey, June, what's wrong?" Glenn whispered as he tried to calm me down.
"T- T-Dog said you were surrounded. I thought you were gone!" I cried into him.
"It's okay now. I'm not going anywhere," Glenn spoke to me in a hushed tone.
"I thought you were gone…" I repeated as I sobbed. I felt Glenn lean on the car. He wrapped me into his embrace tighter, doing what he could to comfort me. He wiped my tears away and set me down.
"I'm not dying that easily. You don't have to worry about it anymore. It's over, I'm here, you're safe," Glenn reassured. I took a deep breath and calmed down.
"How did you guys even make it out of there?" Dale asked Glenn.
"New guy helped us," Glenn replied. I leaned on him as we waited for the new guy to come out.
"Hey! Helicopter boy! Come say hello," Juan(Morales) called to the new guy in the U-Haul.
"He's a cop like you," Juan said to Shane as the man got out of the driver's seat. He had on a cop uniform that was partially unbuttoned, showing the white tank top underneath. He walked up, seeming shocked by Shane. I looked over to see Shane with the same look on his face. Maybe they knew each other? He pointed over to Carl and Lori as he was on the brink of tears. He began walking over to them quickly.
"Dad! Dad!" Carl yelled. I looked over to see Carl running to this new man. Carl leaped into his father's embrace. The man was now crying and fell to his knees with Carl in his arms. I watched shocked at the scene in front of me. Carl's father picked Carl up, walking over to Lori. Lori hugged him with a shocked, hurt, and confused look on her face. I saw tears pricking her eyes, making them have a glossy look. Everyone looked in shock at the sight. But all this gave me a little spark of hope. Maybe my family can find me…
So, this is a longer chapter but not as long as I originally planned. We will now (mostly) be going off the TV series. If anyone has suggestions for future ideas for the story, feel free to comment or DM me. Thank you and I hope you enjoyed this chapter!
